Zane and Robin Elliot love downtown living in their renovated 130-year-old home. Their favorite part is the new front brick steps.

The Elliott Home Couple renovates 130-year-old structure as project, then decides to move in and call the place their home

There was something different in his latest house project at 1324 Fillmore Street in downtown Corinth.

Zane Elliott calls flipping houses his hobby. Over the years in property management, Elliott has purchased about 40 houses, renovated the structures, then sold the property to a buyer. But there was something different in his latest house project at 1324 Fillmore Street in downtown Corinth. Called the Bell Home – David Palmer’s grandmother’s house – and built in 1890,

Zane and his wife of 34 years, Robin, grew to love the property. The Elliotts embarked on their journey to transform the 130-year-old structure into their dream home soon after they purchased the property in May 2018. They began work in November 2018 and some 17 months later in March 2020, the historic house officially became the Elliott home. “We bought the property as a project,” said Elliott, a Corinth native who has served as city court clerk the past eight years. “We entertained the idea of moving in.”

This was the home at 1324 Fillmore Street before the renovation process began.

“Houses do not became available on this street very often. So we saw it as a great opportunity.” ZANE ELLIOTT A new staircase was added in the front living area for second floor access.

The living room area shows the amount of effort in the early renovation process.

The second floor of the house was attic space before the renovation process. The area now features two bedrooms and a bathroom.

“I have always liked downtown,” added Robin, who has been employed part-time in downtown Corinth the past 26 years at Clausel Jewelers. “I love the sound of trains and church chimes.” “I also really liked the fact it was a corner lot,” she said. Zane admitted the Fillmore Street project became much more involved than first expected, but the move from their home on Oak Lane to the former Bell Home became a priority. “Houses do not became available on this street very often,” noted Zane. “So we saw it as a great opportunity.” The project became much more than renovation as the interior soon became nothing more than stud walls and exposed rafters. The Elliotts began with 1,900-square-feet of living area and nothing more than empty attic space on the second floor. They now have a two-story house with 2,770-square-feet of living space, plus a two-vehicle carport with adjacent office and storage space. “The entire house was gutted,” said Zane. The transformation has been gratifying, but not without lots of blood, sweat and tears, the couple agreed. Fourteen-foot ceilings were lowered to the more standard 10 feet. Two bedrooms and a full bathroom were added to the second floor.

A new hallway was added in the home’s expanded interior area.

The new living area has more space in the renovated Elliott home.

The Elliott’s were able to add a dining room in the renovation process.

PAGE 14

Major changes to the first floor were gas fireplace added to the front living area, while a 40-foot by 14foot addition to the south end of the house allowed for more room for a large pantry to be added to an expanded modern kitchen. Also added were a large utility room, hallway, expanded master bedroom with huge walk-in closet and a covered breeze-way and sitting area between the main house and carport. A screened-in porch was added to the north side of the home, as well as a fenced in yard for the Elliott’s four-legged family members. Passersby will notice major changes to the front of the home. “The number one question from people who knew we were working on the house was asked over and over,” explained Zane. “Are you going to put the front porch back?” They did. At some point in the house’s long storied history, the front porch was closed in to make an additional bedroom. Not only does the property feature a covered front porch complete with swing, a large red brick staircase was added to the front exterior entrance. “Those big front steps are now a focal point,” said Zane. “We just love them.” Both Robin and Zane are relieved the project remains complete. Well, almost. Robin still has several finishing touches planned, but the couple now reflect back the renovation process was worthwhile. “It was tough there for awhile,” said Zane. “But all in all, the project turned out much better than we anticipated.” 2020 CROSSROADS MAGAZINE HOMES EDITION

He installed modern kitchen in the center of the coach, complete with a three burner stove. Cabinets and counter tops are made with birch, the sink is granite and the backsplash is tile. There is a large food pantry and lots of storage area, typical for homes on the move. The master bedroom is in the back of the trailer with overhead storage area, full size bed and an adjacent desk with chair for computer work, study and cell phone charging. With the front couches, the trailer can sleep up to five adults. The complete bathroom has a modern toilet, shower and sink. Like the kitchen, Landon choose the upscale birch for the solid surfaces in the bathroom. Landon at first thought he would spend about $8,000 on the renovation, but as the plan and effort unfolded, he made the decision Dolly would be more upscale. There are oak hardwood floors throughout the camper. “I did not want to skimp on anything,” said Landon. “I wanted the nicer things.” Landon estimates he has invested $25,000 on his moving home. I got good feedback and ideas as well.” Dolly was named after his favorite childhood entertainer and fellow Tennessean Dolly Parton. “I just loved her growing up,” said Landon about the country music star. Landon will soon return to UNA. He is already employed with the university in marketing and communications for the Program Council, a position he earned in March. He has a roommate, a mixed-breed lovable dog named Benjamin, who enjoys the Dolly lifestyle. His Airstream home will remain a part of his future, most likely traveling wherever his future career may land. “She will definitely go with me,” said Landon. One thing remains sure. Lakeside living Crum lakeside home provides perfect weekend getaway for family, friends Story, Photos by MARK BOEHLER For Crossroads Magazine

ELKS LANDING — With a beautiful blue sky dotted with clouds, the sun reflects off Yellow Creek on this high bluff with stunning lakeside views. A family with a ski boat pulling smiling younsters on a tube breaks the silence, as well as the teenager running with a jet ski wide open on the smooth waters below, known simply as “the lake” for its weekend living, but in reality a quiet embayment off the main channel of Pickwick Lake, a.k.a. the Tennessee River.

Nestled on this wooded hillside above the picturesque Tishomingo County body of water are alluring homes in a gated community called Elks Landing, where residents can take a tram ride down to the water, ride golf carts to visit neighbors, cruise to the lakeside swimming pool or unload supplies to prepare for a boat ride which begins at a covered community marina. Building wonderful memories at 22 Elks Landing is an Alcorn County family more known for providing generations of new tread in a highly successful 53-year tire business than their 4,000-square-foot “labor of love” they purchased in 2012.

With three stories, spacious living, dining and kitchen area, first floor huge great room, five bedrooms, five and 1/2 bathrooms, the Spanish-style (some may say Florida-style) home is the retreat for Morris and Linda Crum of the Wheeler Grove community, their two daughters and their families. Linda slipped away from the tire, truck rental and storage business in Corinth to provide a tour of their lake home which needed so much work when they purchased the property eight years ago it took one full year of construction and renovation effort before the Crum family could use the structure and grounds.

LINDA CRUM “It was a hobby for me,” admitted Linda. “Coming up here and doing things. We had so much which had to be done. We even did all of the landscaping. And much of the work we did ourselves.” Linda’s tour began in the two-vehicle garage which is the bottom floor and serves as the rear entrance. Two first floor bedrooms were designed with the entire family in mind and each not only has a large bathroom with walk-in stone shower, but grandkids’ names are stamped in the decor so each and everyone have their very own piece of lake living. One bunk style bedroom plays host to the grandchildren in the family, including 15-year-old John Thomas, 13-year-old Maddox and 10-year-old twins, Oakli and Cutler. The other bedroom has a ladies touch for 21-year-old Anna Kate, a third-year nursing student at Mississippi University for Women who loves to bring college friends for a visit to Elks Landing. A trip up a flight of steps goes to the middle floor and a spacious open concept which includes a large family living area and the home’s front door entrance to the gated community. There are six sets of double French doors which open to a covered porch facing both the front and side of the house. Tall ceilings under Corinthian-style columns and marble floor offers plenty of seating for outdoor entertaining and excellent lake views. All those doors to the porch also provide plenty of indoor lighting as family can relax together, then make their way to the dining and kitchen area. There are plenty of family stories along the way, including the special handmade extra large round dining room table with hand carved support legs. With a six-foot wide surface eating area, a dozen Crum family members representing three generations can feast on those shrimp boils or cookouts of grilled burgers and hot dogs. A curved staircase to the third floor includes a turn halfway up as if to hide what awaits upon arrival to the residential top level of the Crum abode. A large landing at the top of the steps serves as a foyer and relaxation nook. Many family members enjoy this favorite spot in the house with a cozy seating area and large picture window. It is a great place to sit and read. The two guest bedrooms on the top floor were designed for Linda and Morris’ two daughters and their husbands, Nick and Katie Rickman and Steve and Candi Gaines. Linda has many special touches in the house decor, and the family bedrooms are no exception with handmade drapes over French doors which open to a private outdoor balcony. Each bedroom has its own bathroom with walk-in stone shower. The master suite remains a jaw-dropper as the ample space includes large sitting area, double french doors to an outside porch with the home’s best views of Yellow Creek, double walk-in stone shower and a spacious walk-in closet which visitors may mistake for a second bedroom if not for custom-made storage bins and shelves. Any tour isn’t complete at 22 Elks Landing without a golf cart ride into the neighborhood. In addition to a public access boat launch and swimming area, the community has a tram for easy transport to the marina and pool area. Families can entertain friends poolside and a covered marina provides slips to open the door to what lakeside living has to offer with fishing opportunities and water sports just a flat stone’s skip away from the place called home sweet home. But for the matriarch of the Crum crew, the property is so much more than a weekend retreat. “It’s a true family place,” said Linda. “That’s what it is all about.” The master suite takes up much of the living area on the home’s top floor.

Historically low mortgage interest rates are helping to drive a new wave of home sales. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates roughly 14 percent of the population, or around 40 million people, move every year for various reasons. While people may be inclined to move far from their current residences, the moving resource Move.org notes that some U.S. states are seeing an influx in people leaving while others are absorbing new residents. People relocate for various reasons. After moving into a new house, it can take some effort to turn that house into a true home and feel comfortable in your new environs. These steps can help that process along. • Create at least one complete and serene space. Focus on setting up the bedroom so you can retreat at the end of the day. Invest in new furniture or get new bedding to give the room this comforting feeling. • Create an organizational plan. It can be tempting to want to throw everything in closets and unpack quickly, but give yourself time to fully analyze where you want to store items, where you may need to paint or reconfigure spaces, as well as any home improvements you want to make before taking out all of your stuff. When you fully unpack, you can immediately enjoy your hard work. • Hang artwork. Hang a few select pieces of artwork or family photos shortly after moving in. Surround yourself with things that make you feel good. • Bring mementos. Your first home may bring about warm feelings. While you can’t recreate it entirely, you can use a piece of furniture or a few family heirlooms to make your new space feel homey. • Rely on familiar scents. Break in the new space with familiar aromas, whether it’s preferential air fresheners, scented candles or baking your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Dazzle guests at the

breakfast table

The following recipe from Betty Rosbottom’s “Sunday Brunch” is a simple yet impressive morning entrée.

Poached Eggs, Asparagus and Chorizo Serves 4 11⁄2 tablespoons olive oil 1⁄2 cup coarse fresh bread crumbs (see cooking tip) 4 ounces Spanish chorizo, cut into 1⁄2-inch cubes (use the Spanish-style chorizo in casing, not loose Mexican-style chorizo) 11⁄4 pound medium asparagus Kosher salt 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, diced 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 2 to 3 tablespoons white or cider vinegar 4 eggs Freshly ground black pepper

1. Heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil until hot in a medium, heavy frying pan set over medium heat. Add the bread crumbs and cook, tossing constantly, until golden and crisp, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove the crumbs to a plate. 2. Heat the remaining 1⁄2 tablespoon oil in the same frying pan set over medium heat. When hot, add the chorizo and stir until lightly browned, 3 minutes. Remove and set aside. 3. Trim and discard 2 to 3 inches of the tough bases of the asparagus spears. Add the asparagus and 1 teaspoon salt to a large frying pan filled halfway with simmering water. Cook until the spears are just tender, 4 minutes. Drain and toss the asparagus in a large bowl with the butter and lemon juice. Season with salt and cover with foil. 4. Bring a large frying pan filled halfway with water to a boil. Add the vinegar and gently break each egg into a saucer and slide it into the water. Swirl the water with a wooden spoon while the eggs are cooking. Cook until the eggs are just set but the yolks are still soft, 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well. 5. Mound some asparagus spears on each of four dinner plates. Top each serving with a poached egg and sprinkle with the chorizo and bread crumbs. Season the eggs with several grinds of pepper and a pinch of salt and serve.
