Aggies claim elusive state title by Donica Phifer PEARL — It seemed like it was meant to be. Kossuth put together a second game that was nearly perfect with Hunter Swindle and Josh Whitaker leading an Aggie team to a 4-0 win over the Sumrall Bobcats to capture the 3A State Title on May 24. The best-of-three series sweep came over 14 innings in two days. Just five days prior, the Aggies played an 18-inning marathon with Independence High School that earned them a spot in Pearl. “ I tell my guys all the time that if we are prepared to play it doesn’t matter when we play. We can play at 2 a.m. or

3 p.m. and 18 innings - we are ready to play,” Kossuth Head Coach Daniel Threadgill said. Starting on the mound, Swindle threw six complete innings, logging three strikes and giving up only one hit -- a fifth inning smash into center field by Sumrall’s Sam Clark. Lone senior Josh Whitaker stepped in on the final inning, giving up a fly ball to Joseph McLaurin and tossing a strike out on Austin Watts to close the game. After tossing for 12 shutout innings in the win over Independence, Whitaker was limited to five innings during the championship series.

Above Kossuth players and coaches gather around the trophy that signified the program’s first state baseball title. Opposite page Kossuth head coach Daniel Threadgill and lone senior Josh Whitaker share a moment after Kossuth won the championship series.

Alcorn County Tournament

Corinth pulls off third sweep Lady Warriors claim third title by H. Lee Smith II The Corinth Lady Warriors defense ended on the plus side in Saturday’s 58-51 win over Alcorn Central on Jan. 11 at the Crossroads Arena. Alcorn Central turned 19 Corinth fouls into a 17-of-22 showing at the line, but in the end 36 turnovers -- 16 via Corinth steals -- helped propel the Lady Warriors to their second Alcorn County Tournament title in three years. Corinth (6-8) outscored Central (10-6) 14-6 over the final 3:12 to claim its third total ACT championship since the program was revived in 1974-75 season. Central, seeking its 21st championship since 1950, led a handful of times, but could never muster more than a 2-point lead since very early in the contest. The Lady Bears, which trailed by nine with 6:22 left in the first half, put together a quick 4-0 run to turn a four-point deficit into a one-point lead with 3:22 left. Lauren McCreless, who led all scorers with 29 points, scored nine of her team’s 12 fourth-quarter points including all the 4-0 spurt. Aundrea Adams turned an offensive board into two makes at the line and Teosha Boyd’s and-one -- courtesy Central’s 28th turnover of the night -- began the gameending 14-6 run. After Briley Talley pulled AC to within a deuce with 2:35 remaining, Corinth scored seven unanswered over a 1:40 stretch of the fourth. Adams, who converted on two of her offense rebounds in the final period, had four in the 7-0 spurt. Five Corinth players scored in the first 16 minutes as Corinth ended a back-andforth final minutes of the half with a 27-25 lead. Boyd led a balanced attack with eight, including a pair of 3-pointers. Please see LADY | 36

Warriors work overtime for record 8th straight title by Anson Keith It was a low scoring, physical night cap at the Alcorn County Tournament at The Crossroads Arena on Jan. 11 as the Corinth Warriors beat the Biggersville Lions 40-38 in overtime.

Lions claim 5th straight 1-1A crown by Blake Long BOONEVILLE — Darian Barnett helped Biggersville get through a dry spell and accomplish a rare feat. Barnett scored eight points in a second quarter where his teammates made just three field goals, and the Lions claimed their fifth straight Division 1-1A Tournament championship with a 82-49 victory over Falkner on Feb. 21 at Booneville High School. “Darian is a great rebounder and is a superb athlete,” said Biggersville coach Cliff Little. “We’ve got various players that can step up at any time and he did tonight.” The Lions led 26-8 after one quarter thanks to three treys by Daniel Simmons, but the Biggersville guard fell upon a cold streak in the second. That’s when Barnett stepped up and kept the Lions (24-5) ahead by double digits, 40-29, at halftime. Emmanuel Simmons scored fight straight points out of the break for Biggersville and the Lions did not look back. Jaylon Gaines knocked down five field goals in the period, including a layup that gave Biggersville a 64-39 cushion. Gaines topped the Lions with 20 points and eight rebounds. Simmons

“We’ve got various players that can step up at any time and (Darian Barnett) did tonight.” Cliff Little Biggersville head coach had 16 points, all in three quarters of play. Biggersville outrebounded the Eagles (17-8) by a 53-36. The Lions also forced 17 turnovers, a majority in the first half. Three other Lions had eight points, including Shaun Watson, Emmanuel Simmons and Barnett. Tray Woody and Treyvon Jeanes topped Falkner with 12 points apiece. Jada Tubbs’s basket with 12 seconds on the clock put Biggersville ahead 20-19 at the break. But Pine Grove won the turnover margin 18-9 and held the rebounding edge 41- 28 as the Lady Panthers came from behind to clinch the tournament title.

Lady Aggies win third straight division title By Donica Phifer and H. Lee Smith II It’s all about the Aggies -- for the third year in a row. Kossuth wrapped up their third Class 1, Division 1 title in as many years, edging out Walnut, Ripley and Falkner by a 26 or larger difference on April 15. Alyssa Trulove medaled for the Aggies, pulling in a 100. Fellow Lady Aggie Shelbi Barnes was Trulove’s closest competitor at 105 while the third team member, Sheby Phillips, finished at 114. Cross Country

Past, present come together at Central by H. Lee Smith II Alcorn Central’s cross-country team has come full circle. On top of head coach Bobby Purvis’ second stint at the school, the boys’ program turned in its best finish at the State Meet since 1983 with a third-place showing at the Class 3A event held Nov. 9 on the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton. Central finished behind defending champion Saint Andrew’s and county rival Kossuth. The Bears, who were 56-10 in head-to-head competition, improved three spots from the 2012 meet in which they finished sixth. “The 3A competition is the best I’ve ever seen,” said Purvis, who’s coached track and cross-country at each of the four county schools. The Lady Bears turned in an eighth-place finish. Last year, Central didn’t even have the required five runners to compete as a team. “The girls are now competing with a full squad at State and produced a winning season,” said Purvis. Ashlee Manahan topped the Lady Bears’ (29-27) efforts with a 20thplace showing among 94 entrants in 17:38. Alcorn Central was at the first

state championship meet held 1978. The Golden Bears would discontinue the program in 1983 following a second consecutive runner-up finish. Cross-country didn’t return to Alcorn County until 1999 – 16 years later – when Purvis started the program at Corinth High School. The historical significance of Saturday’s meet went a little deeper with the melding of the team from 30 years ago. Bobby Holley, the lead runner for the 1983 club, and his wife Janet made the trip with sons and teammates Luke and Samuel. All Samuel Holley did was finish 9th overall and set a school record with a 17:46 finish. Luke was sixth on the squad with a time of 19:36. “That added to the team success, especially with Samuel setting the school record,” said Purvis, who also coached the elder Holley. “I think it was great for our team to reflect back and realize when their team history actually began. “Tradition is worth a lot.” Trevor Godwin turned in another sub-18:00 finish – the first time two AC runners have accomplished the feat at the State Meet – with a personal record 17:55. Both Samuel Holley and Godwin were named the All-State Meet team, which goes to the top 14 finishers.

Cross Country

Aggies earns ninth straight top-3 finish by H. Lee Smith II It took the final cross country meet for the Kossuth Aggies to suffer their first loss of the 2013 season. Still Kossuth capped a near-perfect season, finishing second to defending state champion St. Andrew’s, at the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet held Nov. 9 on the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton. Kossuth entered the final meet at 59-0 and on the heels of a perfect score of 15 in the Division 1-3A meet. All five St. Andrews scoring runners finished inside the Top 10 en route to a 21-point performance. Kossuth, which finished third behind St. Andrew’s and St. Patrick last season, had three All-State Meet runners while finishing with 56 markers. Riley McCalla, one of three seniors

among the seven participants, led Kossuth with a third-place finish in 17:14.7. He took 1:21 off his time from last season, and improved six spots in the process. Jordan Mills (7th) and Nathan Ginn (14) also earned All-State status. Kossuth has finished in the Top 3 every season beginning in 2005. Those include two titles (2007, 2009), five runner-up showings (2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013) and two third-place efforts (2010, 2012). • The Lady Aggies finished fifth, a two-spot improvement from last season. Their 114 points was also 69 digits to the better. Eighth-grader Grace Stanford led the way with a 7th-place finish. Makiho Taniguichi also earned AllState with a 12th-place finish.

The Corinth High School cross-country program wrapped up another stellar campaign with a pair of runner-up finishes at the Class 4A State Meet held Nov. 9 at Mississippi College’s Choctaw Trails in Clinton. Perennial champion Pontotoc swept the annual season-ending meet. Pontotoc claimed a 10-point margin -- 7181 -- on the girls’ side, with the PHS boys winning 49-76. “We had a great state meet,” said Corinth Coach Larry Mangus. “Finishing second to Pontotoc was amazing due to the age of our team members. We are very young with only one senior.” Class 4A is the largest for cross country with 60 teams, including 31 male, competing in the event. Please see CORINTH | 34

Pontotoc’s Denver Russell and Vancleave’s Ethan Dean both turned in 78s. “We has some nice weather Tuesday right until the end of our practice round around 3-3:30 when a storm started moving in,” said Green. “We had some delays on Wednesday and played in the rain all of Thursday, but no lightning. “We did see a big bolt split a tree when we were at the hotel on Wednesday.” The back end of Corinth’s lineup provided the best results, with its 3-5 players producing three of the top five scores. Lady Warriors fall one game shy of state by Donica Phifer It ended with tears. The Corinth Lady Warriors fastpitch team needed to win two after dropping its North Half opener to Houston, and a 12-7 Game 2 placed the team one away from a trip to the state finals. Game 3 proved the downfall, as Houston put together four runs in the first two innings and powered its way to a 17-5 victory on May 11. Houston entered as the defending North Half and State champions. Corinth reached the semifinal round for the first time in the program’s history. The Lady Warriors took a quick lead in Game 2 when Bailee Kramer’s sacrifice fly sent Anna Kayte Webb over home plate Houston tied the game up on its first batter when Audi Dendy smashed a leadoff home run. Webb placed another run on the board for Corinth, a single for Jamia Kirk’s slide in. Two walks later, Rebekah Williams reached first with bases loaded and Webb trotted home for a 4-1 advantage. A two-run homer for the Hilltoppers came inside the third inning following a double from Alexis McShan. Chelsea Gates’ two-run homer put Houston one behind Corinth at 4-3, and the Warriors moved into the bottom of the third for a six-run trip. Three singles on loaded bases and a three-run from Williams claimed the runs and the Warriors added another in the fourth on a single by Stennett Smith. A two-run homer from Mary Kansas Sullivan in the fifth and a single shot by Avery Springer in the sixth brought Houston’s total to 7. Corinth put in one last score in the sixth inning with Allie Jacob sending Katie Vandiver home.

After a brief delay, Game 3 action started in favor of Houston. Gates opened the game with a triple for the Toppers, with Springer and Dendy following to load the bases. A single from Talaja Echoles brought in two runs, and Houston sat down the Warriors in order to close the first. Three consecutive bunts loaded bases again. McShan scored on a double and Gates ran home on a wild pitch. Corinth was sat down again in order and the Lady Toppers capitalized on the moment with a four-run third inning to take an 8-0 lead. Haley Christian provided Corinth’s first hit of the game, a right field single which Colby Cox followed. With a walk of Smith, Kirk’s single drove in the first run but the Warriors fell in order with Webb, and Bailee Kramer out at home while Cox was tagged on a slide into home plate. Houston’s day wasn’t done as a fiverun fourth inning followed, one which included a grand slam by Sullivan to make it 13-3.

Two runs made up the fifth inning for the Lady Warriors, Kramer driving in Webb while Vandiver placed Patterson at home. Those five runs marked the game, as Houston’s Madeline Burdine placed a three-run homer into left field to bring the game to 17-5. Patterson and Kramer both reached base in the final turn at-bat, but a double play on Williams and Kramer’s run to second ended the game. The series loss marked the end to the fast-pitch season for Corinth, who finished as the Division 1-4A Champions and the North Half Runner-Up. The North Half series marks the farthest the program had advanced. Corinth fell in the 2012 playoffs to Houston during the quarterfinals. The team ended the season with a 25-7 record, and bid farewell to four senior members in Stennett Smith, Bailee Kramer, Portia Patterson and Haley Christian. Christian signed with Northeast Mississippi Community College, while Patterson inked to play with Itawamba Community College.

Lady Warriors finish just shy of 4A title Five CHS athletes win state championships by Donica Phifer A difference of four points. That was all that separated the Corinth girls track team from a Class 4A State Title on May 13. The team finished with a secondplace spot -- scoring 78 points to Pontotoc High School’s 82. It was the fourth consecutive title for the “other” Lady Warriors. The boys team also missed another mark by single digits, finishing in third place with 45 points just five points from the runner-up spot held by St. Stanislaus. Tylertown took top honors in the boys’ events, finishing the meet with 112 points and locking up first place by mid-day. In individual honors, five athletes returned home with individual state titles while the programs racked up 11 Top-3 finishes among

Frank Rivers rounded out top honors for CHS, placing first in the boys 800 Meter Run while Andrea Adams earned second in the girls high jump. last 16 events. Keith Greene, who is in his ninth year as head coach, has directed CHS to a record eight consecutive tournament titles, with his only loss coming to Alcorn Central in the 2006 semifinals -- his first year at the helm. Raheem Sorrell, who finished the contest with a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds, was named MVP of the tournament. The game started out with Biggersville holding the ball for the majority of the first half. The Lions only allowed 15 points in the first two periods, but were only able to produce 10 themselves, going into the locker room with a five-point deficit. But as the second half got underway, Biggersville put the pressure on with its full-court defense forcing the Warriors to commit 18 turnovers and scored 25 points in the last two quarters. After junior Kendall Stafford sank two clutch free throws with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Warriors up 35-32, Biggersville’s Daniel Simmons, who ended up with 17 points (14 coming in the second half and overtime), came right back down the court to knock down the first of his two 3-point shots to knot it at 35-all with only three seconds remaining. After a failed desperation 3-point heave by Jose’ Contreras, the game headed into overtime. Biggersville allowed Corinth to score only five points in the extra period, but were only able to score three as Corinth took the game and the trophy in dramatic fashion. Aggies make course history

Devin Sowell claimed medalist honors and the Kossuth golf team made its own history at the Division 1-3A Tournament held April 16 at Shiloh Ridge. Sowell claimed the individual title with a 78 at the 18-hole event and Belmont claimed the team title with a score of 341. Kossuth was 26 strokes back at 367, but earned its first berth in the state tournament thanks to its

runner-up finish. Ripley and Booneville rounded out the field. Central had three individuals participate, but couldn’t field the required number of four to qualify in team scoring. Teams are allowed to have five participants, with the lowest four scores making up the team total. AGGIES CONTINUED FROM 6

“I knew I had five, but I didn’t need them,” said Whitaker. “Hunter and this team stepped up and did an amazing job, I’m so proud of all of them.” The Aggies took an early lead, running through their batting rotation to open the game. Singles by Blake Cain and Whitaker loaded the bases, with Jacob Wilcher advancing to first on an error. Matthew Woodruff batted in the first of two earned runs for the Aggies, another was earned by Wilcher on a walk by Tyler Mercer. “That inning was big. We didn’t really pound the ball, but we did put it in play,” said Threadgill. “And that’s what our job is, to put it in play and let the chips fall where they will.” Sumrall only touched a base twice -Devontea Watts advancing after being struck by a pitch and going on to steal second and third in the first. An error at first base in the third advanced another Bobcat, McLaurin, before batters fell in order to close the third. Kossuth also fell in order to open the fourth, while another error at first put a runner on for Sumrall.

With a hit by Chandler Massengale for the Bobcats, Whitaker and Cain would combine at shortstop and second base to eliminate the runner at second to end the fifth inning. With another three-up, three-down by the Aggies, Sumrall again found a base with Clark’s double. A tag out on Clark at third base allowed Kossuth to escape the inning unharmed, after a walk of Watts. Connar Boyer was also walked to open the sixth inning, before Mitchell’s double sent him home for a 4-0 lead. Zack Walker touched first base for the Aggies on another walk, and Sumrall changed pitchers -- retiring Walls for sophomore Drake Price. Striking out Cain, Sumrall elected to intentionally walk Wilcher to load the bases before a ball into center field closed the Aggies half of the inning. With a three-and-out sixth, the Bobcats traded pitchers again after Woodruff advanced to first from an error, placing senior Will Simon on the mound. Simon retired both Boyar and Bonee to close the top of the inning, giving the Aggies three outs from a win.

With Swindle’s lead-off walk, Whitaker stepped in. With the first hit given up, the Aggies went to work -- a double play by Garrison Lathrop, and Woodruff eliminating runners at first and second. The following two batters were both struck by wayward throws, Whitaker logging at least two strikes before making contact. “I didn’t have any doubt whatsoever that I was going to put him in to finish this thing out…..it’s fitting for him to finish this game,” Threadgill said. With four freshman, an eighth grader and five sophomore making up the bulk of the Aggies roster, Kossuth overcame expectations by other teams to grab the schools first baseball title. “I’m at a loss for words right now. These guys have battle so much this year….they are gritty, they are scrappy…and they did what they were supposed to do,” Threadgill said. The Aggies finished the season with a 21-14 record as well as a 1-3A Division Title and 3A North State Title. Threadgill and Whitaker suited up once more in the NEMCABB All-Star game. Threadgill served as a coach for the East along with Alcorn Central’s Jeff Wood, while Whitaker will be one of several pitchers for the squad.
