Experienced Erin By Steve Beavers Erin Frazier knows all about shooting and throwing. The Corinth High School senior also has some experience when it comes to hitting and spiking. She has even done a little jumping and cheering in a CHS uniform. Frazier has gained that knowledge through the playing of four sports along with a year as a cheerleader while at Corinth. “It has all been fun,” said Frazier as she nears her final time in a Lady Warrior uniform. “Playing sports has allowed me to pick up a lot of good traits.” From softball — fast and slow pitch — to basketball and volleyball, Frazier has played them all. The only daughter of Randy and Tammi Frazier even tried cheerleading for a year. “That just wasn’t my thing,” she

said. “I’m not into the short skirts and rah-rah.” Frazier turned in her pompoms for a chance to do some spiking when volleyball was introduced to the campus three years ago. “I almost didn’t play because it was at the same time as slow-pitch,” said the student council treasurer. Frazier missed the deadline to try out, but was convinced by volleyball coach Erika McCoy to at least give it a try. “I ended up loving it at the end of the day,” said the outside hitter and middle blocker. Volleyball was a natural fit for the athlete and soon became her favorite sport. “I like the high pace and it’s unlike other sports,” said Frazier. “In most sports you have to play under control, but in volleyball you can hit it as hard as you can and still show some

control.” She was named the Maxpreps State Player of the Week for Aug. 22-28. The outside hitter/middle blocker posted 41 kills, 19 aces, 11 blocks along with nine digs and three assists over a 10game stretch to receive the honor. Corinth (20-11-2) won the Region 1 title in only its third year of play this season, finishing 6-0 in league play. The Lady Warriors went on to win its playoff opener versus Ackerman before falling in the 2nd Round to St. Joseph. Her love of volleyball has produced a scholarship to continue the sport at Wallace State Community College. Frazier turned down offers to play softball or basketball at five other schools. “It will be nice to figure out who I am playing only the one sport,” she CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

I loved Wallace State and it’s close enough that I can still come home at times.” Frazier has been a starter in both slow and fast pitch since her seventhgrade year. “When we needed a hit, she came through,” said softball coach Janna LaBarreare. “Erin gave us a presence that can’t be replaced.” Over the past two seasons in fast pitch, she has been named the Division 1-3A Defensive Player of the Year. “She has been a tremendous asset for us at catcher,” said LaBarreare. “She took on that tough responsibility as a seventh grader.” “I have played softball since I was old enough to pick up a bat,” said Frazier. “It’s going to be weird not playing any more.” Frazier, who played left field and first base during her slow pitch time, led the Lady Warriors to the Class 4A State Championship Series in October. The slugger, who topped the club with 11 home runs, batted .479 with 45 hits and 44 RBI in being named the Division 1-4A Offensive Player of the Year. “She really stepped up in division play and the playoffs,” said LaBarreare. Corinth won six straight postseason games to collect the North State title and claimed the crown by taking a pair from Tishomingo County. Frazier, who ripped four long balls in the postseason, sent the Lady Warriors to championship series with a pair of homers in the North affair with TC. On the hardwood, the senior led the Lady Warriors to only their second Alcorn County Tournament crown since the program was revived in 1974-75. Frazier scored a game-high 14 points in being named Most Valuable Player following Corinth’s 53-32 win over Alcorn Central. She helped send the Lady Warriors to the North Half by tallying careerhigh 32 points in the Division 1-4A Tournament. As a junior she recorded a triple-double in a home win over Biggersville. “By playing so many sports it has 6 | Sports Rewind

Corinth’s Erin Frazier added another chapter to her high school career by being named Homecoming Queen. helped me see that God has his hand in all of it,” said Frazier. “It has made my faith stronger and I have become more responsible and disciplined.” The softball standout really saw God working during the Lady Warriors’ unusual trip to the playoffs. It was an in, then out, and then back in scenario for the Lady Warriors to even get in the postseason. “It really hit me that I wasn’t going to play softball any more when we were told by Coach LaBarreare that we were not going to make the playoffs,” said Frazier. “God was working, though, and what we thought was our last meal together became a celebration.” Corinth went onto make a deep run

before falling to Newton County in the state finals. Frazier appreciates the efforts of all her coaches through the years. “Each one saw the potential and didn’t cut me any slack,” she said. As the final game nears, Frazier still has one goal left. She wants a state championship before the final chapter is written. One more shot at the gold before she takes off the red and black forever. “The day I got put out in one sport, I would be at practice for another sport the next day,” said the CHS athlete. “I think it’s going to hit me hard on senior night because this will be the last one,” The last of six years of stellar play in a Corinth uniform.

Cross Country Martin wins 3A; Aggies, Lady Warriors 2nd By Steve Beavers

CLINTON — Kossuth turned in its best performance of the year. Saint Andrews was just a tad better. The Saints ended the six-year stronghold of Alcorn County on the Class 3A Cross Country Boys State Championship by edging the Aggies by four points at the Nov. 5 event. “I thought the boys ran well,” said KHS Head Coach Scotty Shettles. “It was the best race we have run all year ... they were just a little better than us.” Kossuth, which won state titles in 2007 and 2009, finished runnerup for a second consecutive year. The Aggies were second to Corinth in last season’s event. KHS was paced by the individual championship of senior runner Connor Martin. Martin, who was the silver medalist in the competition last year, turned in a personal best of 16:56 to collect the gold medal. He was the lone runner to finish under 17 minutes. Aggie runner Kyle Suitor helped the team collect the top two spots with a silver-medalist time of 17:04. “We had four of our runners turn in their best time of the year,” said Shettles. The Aggies held a one-point advantage through the first four runners. St. Andrew’s Hayden Guynes was the difference as his 11th place showing gave the Saints the title. The Lady Aggies finished fourth in the female division. • In Class 4A, Pontotoc ran away with both titles for a third straight year. The Corinth Lady Warriors were runnerup while the Warriors came home third in their first season in 4A. The Top 14 runners in both 3A and 4A were named All State.

Each team was judged on energy, difficulty, formation, technique, transition and synchronization. Central’s overall

score was an 83.3. AC, competing in only its third state competition, saw it had a chance to repeat as state champs after performing a routine in the summer that earned it a trip to Disney World. “I knew we had some very talented girls and a great routine,” said Witt as they prepared for the big dance. Central’s squad is made up of 14 young ladies. Emily Strickland is caption of the squad while Abby Little and Anna Wallace serve as co-captains. The dance team is also composed of first-year senior dancer Alicia Crum. Warriors defend 3A track title; Gardner hauls in three golds By H. Lee Smith II PEARL — After claiming their initial track championship in 2010, the Corinth Warriors successfully defended their Class 3A title on May 13 “This year we were better,” Coach Ryan Summers said. “We were more solid. My assistant coaches did a good job of getting everybody in the right event, the right spot. They were responsible for making us successful.” Summers’ assistants are Patricia Barr, Larry Mangus, and Fred Stafford. Biggersville’s DeAra Gardner turned in the best individual performance among the local athletes in the Class 1A meet. The senior claimed three gold medals — 100 meter dash, 100 meter hurdles, and the long jump — and finished second in the high jump. • In 2010, Corinth carried six competitors to the event, this past year, they carried nine. Senior Taylor Smith brought home two gold medals, one in the 110 high hurdles, and one in the 300 intermediate hurdles — breaking his own school record in the process. He also won a bronze in the pole vault. Alcorn County owned the 3A two mile, with Kossuth’s Connor Martin taking the gold and Corinth teammates Clayton Alred winning the silver and Brian McDonnieal taking the bronze. Kyle Suitor of Kossuth won the gold in both the 1600 and 800 meter run, while Corinth’s Nick Thompson won the silver in both events. Frank Rivers won the bronze in the 800 meter. Brad Roach of Kossuth took home the silver in the pole vault. Eric Richardson of Corinth also won a bronze in the high jump. • In 1A, Marc Rees of Biggersville won the silver in the 1600 meter run, and Mario Beene won the bronze in the shot put. • On the girls’ side, Chelsea Cave10 | Sports Rewind

Warriors cruise to 8th golf title Platt takes individual championship By H. Lee Smith II MADISON — Corinth’s swan song proved to be a runaway hit. The Warriors defended their 3A golf championship in easy fashion, claiming a 30-stroke victory in the two-day event held May 4-5 at Reunion Golf and Country Club. The championship is the eighth for the program, the last six coming in 3A. Corinth will compete in 4A for the next two school years after being classified a 3A school since 1996-97. “P.J. (Platt) is our only senior and we have some others lined up ready to go,” said coach Keith Greene, who has been a part of three titles. “Alex (Tull) is just a ninth-grader and Collin (Burns) is only a sophomore.” In addition to claiming the team title, CHS earned another championship off the club of Platt. The senior took home medalist honors with a two-day total of 156. Platt opened with a 77 and carded a 79 in the final round to become Corinth’s third individual champion, joining Bradley Bumpas (1988) and Josh Webb (2006), Sumrall’s Bryce Monroe was a close second at 157 with Tull earning a top-three finish at 160. Corinth took a 23-shot lead over eventual runner-up Forest following first-round play. The Warriors dropped eight strokes of their first 18-hole total, but still finished with a

The big lead kept us from having to be so aggressive.” Blake Farris, who tied Platt for first-round honors, finished at 164. Collin Burns totaled a 166 with John Mathis rounded out the group at 172. Lady Warriors 2nd in 4A By Steve Beavers JACKSON — Corinth had its chances. The Lady Warriors bid for a Class 4A Slow-Pitch State Championship came up just a bit short. Defending state champion Newton County completed a perfect 35-0 season with a 2-0 sweep of CHS. The state champs downed the locals 7-0 and 8-7 at V.A. Fields on Saturday, Oct. 15. “We played hard, but missed some opportunities early,” said CHS Head Coach Janna LaBarreare. “We just didn’t hit like we have been hitting.” Corinth (26-9) came into the championship series not allowing a team to reach double figures in the

That streak continued only to have the Corinth bats go cold. “They were beatable,” said LaBarreare of the state champs. “I thought we contained them, but we couldn’t get that timely hit.” After being blanked 7-0 in Game 1, Corinth tied the contest at 7-7 with four runs in the top of the fifth. The North champs battled back from 7-1 down in knotting the contest. Jamia Kirk, who led the team with six hits in the two games, singled to start the fifth. Jimmy Mitchell led the Warriors to an 118-54 mark and 12 straight playoff berths in 14 seasons.

Mitchell ends 40-year run By H. Lee Smith II “Mitchell Mania” is the craze no more. Jimmy Mitchell, who guided the Corinth Warriors to 12 straight playoff appearances, is hanging up his whistle after 40 years on the sidelines. The 1968 Winona graduate announced the decision, effective at the end of the school year, on Jan. 10. “It’s just time,” said Mitchell, who informed the players and coaches Tuesday morning. “It wasn’t an easy decision ... it hurts.” The Corinth Touchdown Club held a retirement ceremony for the program’s winningest coach on April 1. Mitchell and his wife, Angelyn, who teaches at Corinth Elementary school, have each spent 40 years in the school 14 | Sports Rewind

business after marrying in 1970. “We want to have time to travel and do various things before we’re too old to do them,” said the coach. Mitchell spent the bulk of his headcoaching career at Corinth, quickly turning the program into a postseason contender. After going 11-11 in his first two seasons, the Warriors began a string of five straight Division 1-3A championships in 2000, prompting the student body to don “Mitchell Mania” shirts. Corinth won 10 games or more during the five-year stretch, reaching the championship game for the first time in the program’s history in 2001. CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

Stafford tallied 639 points — 17.8 per contest — and pulled down 297 rebounds (8.3) in leading the Lions to a 28-8 mark. The senior also led the team with 42 blocks and was second with 54 steals. “It makes my job a lot easier having a kid like Dexter,” said Little. Stafford scored in double figures in 32 of the Lions’ 36 contests, including

By H. Lee Smith II two 30-point outings in a 10-day span against league foe Blue Mountain. He also registered 12 double-doubles — all in points and rebounds. Over a five-year, 119-game career — including a seven-game stint as an eighth-grader — Stafford amassed 1,964 points. He reached the 30-point mark five times, tallying a career-best 33 against league rival Wheeler in his freshman season. CONTINUED ON PAGE 29

Lions CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17 first time in over 10 years. The Lions beat the Cougars 79-61 in the finals of the North State Tournament. Coldwater (27-6) turned the tables in the rematch. After getting outscored 45-27 in the second half of a tied game 13 days ago, Coldwater used a 46-32 advantage over the final two quarters of the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s State Basketball Tournament. Down 23-22 at the break, the Wildcats broke the game open by outscoring the Lions 22-9 in the third quarter. Biggersville reclaimed a 26-24 lead on a Blake Anderson three-pointer 41 seconds into the third, but wouldn’t score again until a Jaylon Gaines’ steal and dunk at the 4:24 mark. Coldwater, meanwhile, reeled off nine straight points during the Biggersville drought then closed the frame on an 11-2 advantage for a 44-32 cushion after three complete. Coldwater began the fourth with five unanswered points as the lead ballooned to 17 with 7:20 remaining. With Biggersville Head Coach Cliff Little yelling “Don’t quit” from the sideline, the Lions’ put together one last-gasp effort. Biggersville responded with 11 straight points over a 1:55

stretch, including seven where the Lions didn’t allow Coldwater to cross midcourt. Six points by Darien Barnett, another trio by Dexter Stafford and a bucket by Daniel Simmons pulled BHS to within 49-43 with 5:25 remaining, re-ignited a large Lion contingent and prompted Coldwater to call a timeout. Jakevin Farmer, who was one of four Coldwater players in double figures with 15 points, converted one of his game-high 22 rebounds into a bucket and a pair of free throws by Devonta Roberts 25 seconds later pushed the lead back out to double figures. Biggersville responded one final time before running out of luck. Four different Lions scored in an 8-2 run that saw Biggersville cut the deficit to four on a Barnett freebie with 2:32 remaining. The Lions wouldn’t score again until less than one minute remained and the Cougars tallied a pair of buckets and six straight free throws for another twindigit lead with 30.3 seconds showing. Biggersville took its biggest lead of four at the 3:09 mark of the first. The two clubs combined for just 30 points in the opening half, with neither team recording a field goal the final 5:21. Coldwater killed the Lions in the paint, getting 40 of its 68 points. The majority came via the second-chance route where the Cougars held a 23-12

advantage. Paced by Farmer’s 22 rebounds, the Wildcats dominated the Lions on the glass to the tune of a 57-35 advantage. Coldwater’s margin was 27-19 on its end of the floor. Daniel Simmons paced the Lions with 15 points. Stafford ended his stellar career with a double-double on 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Tennis

Corinth comes up short in title bid By H. Lee Smith II JACKSON — St. Andrews made easy work of Corinth once again, defending its Class 3A state tennis title. Corinth, with 14 team titles to its credit, had won the previous five 3A team titles before falling to St. Andrews in the 2010 championship. St. Andrews took five of the seven matches, with Corinth claiming wins in Boys Doubles No. 1 and Girls Doubles No. 2. The two teams also paired of three times in the championship round of the individual tournament, with Corinth taking two of three. Catherine Coleman claimed the girls singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 decision.

Brian McDonnieal and Allie Winters teamed to win the mixed doubles event with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Coleman’s win was the sixth for the program in girls singles and her second after playing alongside Kayla Keefe in the 2009 girls doubles event. The mixed doubles championship was the fifth straight for CHS and the third for Winters. She teamed with Joseph Hurt to win the event in 2009 and 2010. It was also McDonnieal’s second title having also won with Taylor Corder in 2008. Austin McElwain advanced to the boys singles title match before falling 7-6, 0-6, 2-6. The two individual titles upped Corinth’s overall count to 40, including two each the past two seasons.

Alcorn Central’s Trae Bain can be deadly from three-point range on the basketball court. A different kind of trifecta helped the junior secure Division 1-3A Player of the Year honors on the diamond and the Bears to one of their best seasons in some 20 years. Bain did it with the bat, on the hill and with the glove in 2011, sharing top billing with Ripley fireballer Jonathan Morrison among the six-team league. A member of Jeff Wood’s varsity club since his 8th grade campaign, at the plate Bain topped the Bears in batting (.520), on-base percentage (.584), slugging (.949), hits (51), doubles (18) and homers (8), while

tying for the lead with 37 runs and 38 RBI. In addition, he struck out just 12 times — lowest among the regulars — in 113 plate appearances. On the hill, the righty was 3-1 with eight saves and a 1.48 ERA in 15 appearances. In just 23 2/3 innings, Bain had a hand in 11 of the 24 AC wins — the Bears highest total since 1992. Playing a variety of positions in the field, Bain was guilty of just six errors in 118 chances, among them 130 put outs and 16 assists. Bain also received another honor by being a second-team pick on the annual Class 3A All-State team. Kossuth’s Daniel Gibson was named Pitcher of the Year after posting a 7-2 mark and helping the Aggies claim their first league title in 10 years.

Late-game heroics yield runner-up finish By H. Lee Smith II CLINTON — There was plenty of lightning at the Class 4A boys state soccer championship. The Corinth Warriors just couldn’t bottle any. Corinth finally ran out of late-game magic, falling to Bay High School 2-1 in the second of six championship games at Clinton High School. The match was welcomed by rain and wind at the outset and delayed for about an hour at half due to lightning. The Warriors (17-3-2) never led in the title match. Bay (16-7-1) took a 1-0 lead

into the break with a goal in the 26th minute. “We were wet in the first half and just tried to survive,” said Corinth coach Gregg Parker. “In the second half we played well, we just had some calls that didn’t go our way.” Halftime was extended with play suspended about an hour due to lightning. The stadium was also cleared as a mean storm front rolled through the area. Corinth, seeking its second state title and first in 4A, evened things four minutes into the second half on John Mathis’ 33rd goal of the season. The senior, who

Parker. “I’m extremely proud of them.” Corinth won the 1A/2A/3A title and set a school-record with 21 wins two years ago and fell just short of a return trip to the title game last season. Despite being moved up to 4A this year, the Warriors put together another strong season, going unbeaten in Division 1-4A. Prior to Saturday, Corinth’s lone losses came to 5A Starkville in the season-opener and at 6A DeSoto Central in a shoot-out. Heading into the title contest, the Warriors had yet to lose this season with Mathis on the field, going 14-0-2. The All-State performer tallied 103 goals over 61 games the past three seasons.

Bay reclaimed the lead five minutes later. The Tigers lofted a corner kick past the goal and a good header redirected it into the back of the net. Corinth got a handful of looks at a game-tying goal, but this time the Warriors were denied of any lategame heroics in the playoffs. “Their goalie did a good job,” said Parker. The Warriors came through with late goals in their previous two games to reach the title match. Corinth scored in the final minute against Florence to send the game into overtime, then avoided an extra session with Pontotoc by scoring in the final seconds. Parker had noted his club’s resolve all season and was still singing their praises after a tough loss. “They never quit,” said

Warriors make 4A title game By H. Lee Smith II JACKSON — Corinth dug itself a huge hole in the second quarter and never recovered. Amanda Elzy (27-5) outscored Corinth 19-2 in the second quarter and held off a late Warrior rally to claim the Class 4A Boy’s championship in the fourth and final game on Friday, March 2 at the Mississippi Coliseum. Corinth (29-6) knocked off Amanda Elzy 74-71 in the North State Tournament title game 13 days ago, but had to play catch up after the Panthers turned the game by 22 points during an eight-minute span of the second quarter. The Warriors took a 10-point lead at the 1:31 mark of the first after Jazz Garner hit two of three from the stripe. The Panthers scored 23 of the game’s next 24 points and took a 12-point lead with 1:30 left in the half. Corinth missed its first six shots of the second and turned the ball over eight times as Amanda Elzy reeled of 19 straight points. Eric Richardson’s drive with 1:18 left in the half was Corinth’s first field goal in 8:55 and the Warriors lone points of the quarter. Corinth got to within eight four times in the third quarter, but a three-point trip and a tip-in pushed the deficit back out to 12 -- at 44-32 -- after three quarters. The Warriors turned the tables in the fourth and got to within three with 48 seconds on the second straight threepointer by Desmin Harris. The consecutive three-balls capped a 15-6 that saw Corinth force 10 turnovers in 5:30. Amanda Elzy answered on its ensuing possession and came away with four straight points the final 19.5 seconds after consecutive Corinth turnovers. Corinth led the final 6:42 of the first, taking an 18-11 advantage into the second quarter. The Warriors had just two turnovers in the frame and drew eight fouls, getting to the line 14 times and making nine. The Warriors were just 1-for-12 from the floor and committed nine of their 16 turnovers in being outscored 19-2 in the second.

Senior Eric Richardson tied for team honors with 15 points in the 4A title game.

Amanda Elzy took a 12-point lead into the fourth. A 9-2 Corinth run cut it to five with 2:35 remaining before Harris’ back-to-back triples got the Warriors as close as three with 48 seconds left. Richardson and Deione Weeks — the lone seniors among the first eight players — led Corinth with 15 each. Weeks did his damage in the first with eight points, while Richardson — held scoreless in last season’s title game loss — kept Corinth in the game in the third by tallying nine of his club’s 12 points.

Mitchell CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 The Warriors put together a trio of perfect regular seasons and advanced to the state semifinals three times. Mitchell was the longest tenured football coach in the program’s history and also the winningest, posting an 118-54 mark in 14 seasons. In 20 total seasons, he was 164-77 with 15 playoff appearances. After enduring just his fourth losing season in 20 years as a head coach, Mitchell’s 2011 Warriors finished 6-6 and went 1-1 in the postseason after finishing second in Division 1-4A. Corinth, which was bumped up to Class 4A for the first time since the 1993-94, 1994-95 school years, beat Shannon 21-20 in the regular-season finale to extend its playoff streak. “I really enjoyed this past season,”

She also took the Player of the Year award for the slow-pitch season. “It’s been a privilege to coach a kid like her,” Corinth coach Janna Labarreare said. “She does a good job pitching and she has a huge responsibility producing runs for us. She is the total package. She plays both sides of the field very well for us. “It’s not just her athleticism, but also her attitude and work ethic that make her a success and it’s an honor to be a part of that.” The junior hit .397 with a home run, seven doubles, and 21 RBI. She also fielded at a .950 pace, committing only five errors in 101 chances. Smith, who was 12-7 in the circle, also finished the season with a 1.89 ERA, allowing only 36 earned runs in 133.1 innings. said Mitchell. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group to finish with — they never quit.” Mitchell began what would prove to be a native tour at Pontotoc in 1992, leading the Warriors to a North Half title and a state runner-up finish in his first year. He went 10-10 in two seasons with the Indians of Itawamba AHS before coming to Corinth in 1998. Of his seven coaching stops — including four as an assistant — Mitchell’s last proved to be his longest. “Every place I went I didn’t think I’d stay long... that just goes with coaching,” said Mitchell. Support from parents and friendships that were built played a role in a 14-year stay in the Crossroads area. “When parents are crying when the season is over, you know you have good support,” said Mitchell. “I’ve also had some real good friendships from those who stayed around the program

long after their kids had left.” Mitchell began coaching at his alma mater in 1972, spending three seasons at Winona. He followed with stops at Okeechobee, Fla., (3 years), Kosciusko (3) and Tupelo (11) before landing his first head coaching job. “I’ve been involved with football since I started playing in the second grade in 1957,” said Mitchell. “It gave me something to do and I’ve seen it do that to others. “It’s the best team sport you can play and it teaches you a lot of things, both as a player and a coach.” The Mitchells, who have a 37-yearold daughter, Katie, plan to remain in Corinth. “I’m excited about the chance to just watch football games,” said Mitchell. “I might have to lay low when August rolls around. I don’t know if I could handle riding by the fieldhouse when practice starts.”

The girls really believe in her.” Coleman, a junior, hit .400 with 22 hits, 12 runs, one homer and 16 RBI. “Annaleigh moved to shortstop from second base before the season started,” Lyles said. “She came in there and played lights out for us all season long.” In addition to the player sweep, Lyles and assistant Blake Hendrix were awarded coaching staff of the year honors. “To me, it’s just a reflection of the hard work the girls have done,” Lyles said. “I didn’t swing a bat or field a ball all season.” Player of the Year -- Stennett Smith (Corinth) Offensive Player of the Year -- Annaleigh Coleman (Kossuth) Defensive Player of the Year -- Carleigh Mills (Kossuth) Coaching Staff of the Year -- Steve Lyles and Blake Hendrix (Kossuth)
