State Championships
Alcorn County sitting on 72 state titles BY H. LEE SMITH Corinth’s 49th was the latest for Alcorn County. The Warriors sixth basketball title in March provided the school with its 49th state title over 11 sports. The four current county schools, and Corinth Easom, have now totaled 72 state championships across 12 sports. Prior to Corinth’s latest, Kossuth had been responsible for the last three. The Aggies claimed the 2014 Class 3A Baseball title and the 2015 Powerlifting crown, while the Lady Aggies brought home the hardware from the 2015 Class I Bowling Tournament. The Mississippi High School Activities Association sanctions championships in 16 different sports. With no archery, swimming or wrestling on any of the local agendas, the four Alcorn County schools participate in 13. Of those 13, seven offer both boys’ and girls’ competition. Given that number, the locals have brought home hardware in 12 out of a possible 20 sports. Those yet to be one by the quartet include: football, girls’ basketball, boys’ bowling, girls’ golf, girls’ soccer,

Team chemistry nets 6th state title BY H. LEE SMITH II JACKSON — Head coach Keith Greene didn’t need to go all Gene Hackman before the March 10 Class 4A basketball championship game against McComb. It wasn’t David vs. Goliath, much less the Hickory Hoosiers vs. South Bend Central. There were no cameras to document the pregame, big game speech. In fact, a big time mixture of words and/or anecdotes wasn’t needed. “I just told them ‘Don’t forget what got you here,’” said Greene. “You’re a hustling, scrappy team. Be that team one more time and things will take care of itself.” Things did take care of themselves. Corinth used its relentless defensive pressure to dethrone the two-time defending champions 68-63 in front of a sea of red inside Mississippi Coliseum. It was Corinth’s sixth state championship on the hardwood, first since 2002 and the initial one in Class 4A. McComb had won 92 of 94 games on the floor — losses to a 5A and 6A school — since the end of the 20122013 season, but the Warriors weren’t in awe of the Tigers. After all, they played them in last year’s semifinal round — losing by 10 — and had seen them play twice in the annual tournament. “We were never scared,” said Antares Gwyn. “We put on our clothes just the www.mycrossroadsmagazine.com

One of six seniors on the squad, the program’s No. 8 all-time scorer started two games in the 2013 tournament, including the program’s third straight runner-up finish. Corinth now has six championships to go along with six runner-up finishes. Greene has led the Warriors to six tournaments and four appearances in the title game — both school marks. “Not a lot of teams could or did beat Amanda Elzy,” Greene said of two of the
championship defeats. “I’m just proud for the kids. They worked hard, I’m just happy to be a part of it.” The Warriors had a large senior class in setting the school record for winning percentage in a 29-2 season. Four started, including Gwyn who played in 123 games, and two came off the bench. “That’s the most we’ve had in a long time. They provided great leadership and work ethic,” said Greene, who has won 261 games in 11 seasons. “This team had a great chemistry due to growing up and playing together. “Some developed quicker

than others, but they all brought something different to the lineup.” Sophomore Axavius “Tada” Stricklen started all 31 games. He scored Corinth’s last points against McComb last season, and less than one year later helped dribble out the final seconds on the clock.

2015 Powerlifting
Aggies power their way to state title BY H. LEE SMITH II Kossuth High School’s powerlifting program has come a long way the past six years. It reached the apex April 18 at Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson as the Aggies claimed the Class 3A state championship. “The kids put in the hard work and it finally paid off,” said Brian Kelly, who has led the program for six years. “We knew it would be close going up against some good weight-lifting programs and strong kids.” Kossuth, Velma Jackson — a three-time champion in 2010-12 — and Charleston all had nine lifters in the event, which combines bench, squat and deadlift. Kelly said it literally came down to the last two weight divisions with Blake Arnold (308) and Ty Dickson (308plus) winning Kossuth’s third and fourth golds of the day. The Aggies finished with 43 points, eight ahead of Charleston and Velma Jackson. Charleston and Velma Jackson each totaled 35 points, with the Tigers winning the tie-breaker of most first-place finishes. Earlier in the morning session, Logan Morton (114) claimed his third straight state title and Hunter Switcher (132) defended his 2014 title. “Everybody had a personal record day,” said Kelly. “And we knew we had to have that to have a good meet.” PA G E 8

Leader of the program for six years Kossuth has won the last six Division 1-3A titles and three North Half championships, including the 2015 event. Prior to winning the event, Kossuth’s highest finish was third — accomplished three times. The other years resulted in a fourth- and fifthplace team finish. Kossuth finished with
seven medals. Luke Osborn (123) earned a silver, while Jaley Adams (198) and Garret Mansel (165) earned bronzes. Six years ago, just like in 2015, Kossuth took nine lifters to the State Meet. They brought home only one medal, however. “We’ve come along way in that time,” said Kelly.

“We have six coming back and a couple that didn’t lift because they had seniors ahead of them.” There are 12 different weight classes going from 114 to 308-plus. Participants go through three squats, bench presses and deadlifts, using the best in each to determine an overall total. “We finished 26 of our 27 squats,” said Kelly. “I was proud of that.” Kossuth’s other participants were Brett Holley (242), who was fourth — just 15 pounds from third; and Daniel Martin (181), who missed a bronze via tiebreaker. www.mycrossroadsmagazine.com

Alcorn County sends double-double to Jackson BY H. LEE SMITH II Alcorn County basketball fans thought they were seeing double during the 2016 Mississippi High School Activities Association’s State Basketball Tournaments. Both Biggersville High School and Corinth High School sent two entrants to the tournament for the first time. Even more history was made when the Corinth Lady Warriors made the first appearance in the history of the program. That came on the heels of another first — a Division Tournament championship. Whether or not even more history was made will take further research. While most recently three Alcorn County teams participated in the 1993 and 2000 events, the 2016 gathering was strongly believed to be the first time that four local teams earned berths. The Corinth Warriors brought home their sixth state title, first since 2002 and the initial crown as a member of Class 4A. The Lady Lions won their quarterfinal match against West Lowndes before being eliminated by eventual champion Bogue Chitto in the 1A Tournament. It was BHS’ sixth appearance and first since 2007. The BHS boys have now been 11 times since 1980. Biggersville won the 1996 and 2013 state titles, the latter of which was the Lions’ last appearance.
Adams, Stafford top 1-4A team
A season of firsts didn’t go unnoticed by their peers. The Corinth Lady Warriors earned two of the top four awards, and garnered four three other first team selections following the annual postseason meeting of Division 1-4A coaches. Under second-year head coach Fred Stafford — who shared coaching honors with Pontotoc’s Bill Russell — the Lady Warriors claimed their first division/ district tournament title. After winning two mustwin playoff games for the first time in program history, the Lady Warriors made the State Tournament for the initial time. Corinth finished 17-11 after falling to perennial tournament visitor Bay
in quarterfinal action at Jackson State University. The 17 wins are second all time since the program returned from a lengthly hiatus in 1974-75. The Lady Warriors have just four winning seasons, and one breakeven season, in 42 years of the five-onfive era. Stafford has produced two of the winning campaigns, including the only back-to-back showings. Itawamba AHS’ Tori Mallory was named the six-team division’s Most Valuable Player. Best Offensive Player honors went to Jatyjia Jones of Pontotoc. Corinth senior Aundrea Adams was named the league’s Best Defensive Player. She paced the Lady Warriors in rebounds, blocks and scoring — at 12.9 per contest. Adams stepped up her game in the postseason. The veteran averaged 17.2 points per game in those six contests. In the three playoff games following the 1-4A

Adams sets state record with 543 yards BY H. LEE SMITH II KOSSUTH — Jaley Adams celebrated his 17th birthday in style … provided the Kossuth junior was able to get out of bed. Adams set a state single-game rushing record, sprinting and bowling his way to a 543-yard, eighttouchdown effort as Kossuth ended a three-game losing streak to Corinth with a 68-34 win on Friday, Sept. 25 at Larry B. Mitchell Stadium. Stringer’s Tipston Garber held the previous record with 523 yards in 2003. “It feels good to know that I broke a record,” said Adams. “I’m just blessed and have to thank God.” Adams’ eight touchdowns eclipsed the mark of five he tied last week while setting a then-school-record with 305 yards against Nettleton. Two players share the state mark with nine. “I thanked the offense line after every touchdown,” said Adams. Kossuth rolled up 681 yards, all coming on the ground. The Aggies had 453 at the break — 3779 courtesy Adams — when they took a 40-13 lead into the dressing room. With Adams toting the rock 27 times, Kossuth controlled the clock. Corinth also helped Kossuth’s cause with five turnovers — four coming on kickoff returns. Those things combined together led Kossuth to run 64 plays on 14 possessions. Warriors, Lady Warriors finish second BY H. LEE SMITH II A pair of county programs with 12 combined state championships claimed a pair of runner-up finishes. The Corinth Warriors and Lady Warriors just missed out on another title — or two — Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the Class 4A State Cross Country Meet on Mississippi College’s Choctaw Trails in Clinton. The Warriors, who missed out on a sixth title in 2014 by one point, finished three points behind Senatobia. The Tate County Warriors finished with 72 in earning their first 4A championship. All told 27 teams had the minimum of five runners to
score in the event. Teams receive points for the finish of their top five participants, with the lower score the better. The seven-time and defending 4A champion Lady Warriors finished six points behind another native tribe. Pontotoc totaled 65 points in adding another championship to its long resume. Twenty teams, four more than in 2014, scored in the annual event. • Corinth’s girls won six straight 3A titles from 2003-2008. The Lady Warriors have been in the mix the seven years since then, claiming one title, five runner-up finishes and a third-
place showing. The Lady Warriors earned another runner-up finish as Molly Johnson finished second out of 154 participants with a time of 21:19. Vancleave’s Lina May ran away from the field, finishing in 20:15. Emma Knight finished fourth at 21:59 in her final meet. Other Lady Warrior finishers were: Brooks Anne Milligan (21, 23:33), Holly Ross (23, 23:42), Yvette Evans (24, 23:45), Macy Moore (25, 23:53) and Kelsey Fulghum (5, 26:07). • The Warriors won titles in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 while competing
in Class 3A. The most-recent effort was the fourth runner-up showing for the program, the first coming in 2009. Last season, St. Stanislaus edged out the locals 78-79. Rhett Robinson led the way for the Warriors, finishing fourth in 17:49. Morgan Toomer, last year’s runner-up, was 10th with a time of 18:19. Other Warrior finishers included: Blue Mountain College signee Will Crigger (16, 18:34), Jordan Mills (22, 18:48), Dennis Dilworth (23, 18:52), Peyton Marshall (28, 19:04) and Thomas Ratliff (45, 19:54).
Bears, Aggies go 3rd-4th at state cross country meet BY H. LEE SMITH II Alcorn Central and Kossuth combined for four Top 10 finishes at the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet held Monday, Nov. 9 at Mississippi College’s Choctaw Trails in Clinton. The best performance came in the boys’ event with the Bears and Aggies finishing third and fourth, respectively. St. Andrews won the event with 18 points -- just three off of a perfect score. Mooreville was a distant second with 100 points. The Bears finished third with 108, with the Aggies right behind their rivals with 122. PA G E 1 4

Alcorn Central’s Trevor Godwin turned in the best performance, finishing ninth out of 120 participants with a time of 18:24. Teammate Luke Holley (18:28) was the next highest finisher in 11th. Other Golden Bear finishers included: Austin Settlemires (21, 19:45), Blake Burnett (33, 19:59), Josh Harbor (43, 20:26), Joe Harbor (61, 21:12) and Ben Williams (77, 22:25). Rick Hodum paced Kossuth’s efforts, finishing 15th

Lady Lions win first ACT since 2007 BY H. LEE SMITH II Leave it to the Biggersville Lady Lions to end the Corinth Lady Warriors ‘streak. Biggersville led by as many as 12 in the first half and held off a late Corinth rally to knock off the twotime defending Alcorn County Tournament champions 63-59 at the Crossroads Arena on Saturday. Corinth was out to become just the eighth girls’ three-peat champion in the last 67 years of the event. CHS had beaten Alcorn Central and Kossuth the previous two gatherings and a win over Biggersville
n See a complete list of ACT winners. 18 would have completed the round-robin trifecta, something only Alcorn Central
accomplished in 19982000. Instead it was the Lady Lions who tasted tournament victory for the first time since 2007.
After winning a record four straight from 1989-92, BHS had won just once in 23 years. Please see ACT | 40

2015 Track & Field
Central boys win North title BY H. LEE SMITH II The Alcorn Central boys’ track program ended the season with its best-ever finish at the State Meet. Central finished fourth in the 3A event that included athletes from 27 different schools. The Bears totaled 47.5 points. Central’s best previous finish was the sixth-place effort at the 2014 meet. AC had three losses on the season, all three coming at the annual season finale. The Bears won all three pre-state meets — Division 1-3A, Region 1 and North Half — heading into the May 9 gathering at Pearl High School. AC claimed the Class 3A
North Half Track Meet at Winona High School on May 2. Central held off favored Cleveland East Side in the 4x400 Relay and finished the evening with 105 points, seven more than the Region 2 champion Trojans. “Winning North State by beating such teams as East Side, Charleston, Holly Springs and Humphreys County borders on the impossible,” said AC Coach Bobby Purvis. “But not with the mental toughness of these guys.” East Side was also a No. 1 seed — based on last week’s times — and Central a No. 3 in the 4x400 relay. Winona won the event, but Central maintained its lead by finishing second — one
spot ahead of East Side. • The Lady Bears finished 11th out of 24 schools with 25 points at the State Meet. Together the two qualified 14 athletes in 16 events. That’s also a new program standard, surpassing last year’s effort. Alcorn Central’s finish in the Class 3A Meet, broken down by event. The top three places in each earn medals.

Lady Bears earn first playoff berth BY H. LEE SMITH II The Alcorn Central volleyball team can take solace from the only other program in the county. If they continue on the same road, the Lady Bears soon be contenders in the North. Alcorn Central dropped a 3-0 decision to St. Andrews in the first round of the Class I State Volleyball Playoffs on October 20. The same school beat Corinth in straight sets in the Lady Warriors first playoff appearance in 2011. Just like the 2015 Lady Bears, it also came in the third year of the
program and on the heels of a division championship. “I’m proud of what they’ve accomplished, but we’re not satisfied with where we are at,” said AC Head Coach Eric Lancaster, prior to Tuesday’s contest. “This team is still young (4 seniors and no juniors) and has a chance to really be special.” Alcorn Central suffered a big loss prior to the contest. Sophomore Brianna Barnes had to sit out the contest after undergoing an emergency appendectomy Monday Please see BEARS | 36

Corinth comes up one set shy of North crown BY H. LEE SMITH II The Corinth Lady Warriors won their first set in their fourth meeting with perennial champion Lewisburg. In fact, CHS won its first two sets against the Lady Patriots, but couldn’t get to the magic number of three in falling 3-2 in the Class II North Half championship played Oct. 27 on the local hardwood. Corinth ended its season at 31-11, setting a school mark for wins. It was the third state semifinal appearance in the seven-year history of the program, with all North Half title match appearances coming in the last four years. After falling in straight sets to Lewisburg (2012) and Senatobia (2014) in their previous two state semifinal ventures, Corinth jumped out to a 2-0 lead on
Tuesday. Wins of 25-23 and 25-17 left Corinth one set shy of playing for its first state title. It never happened. Lewisburg took a 25-20 win in the third, a forced a fifth and final set with an easy 25-9 win. The Lady Patriots led 6-2 and 10-5 in the decisive set, but the Lady Warriors rallied to tie things at 12-12. Serving down 13-12, Corinth never overcame the deficit with Lewisburg get-

Colorectal Cancer Screening Saves Lives
Colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cancer killer in the U.S. But it can be prevented. Screening helps find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

Kossuth dominates annual 1-3A squad BY H. LEE SMITH II After a dominating season on the field, the Kossuth Aggies were awarded off the playing surface. Kossuth took home three of the top five awards in Division 1-3A and garnered nine First-Team selections out the 24 slots equally distributed among offense and defense at the annual postseason meeting of coaches. Alcorn Central, Belmont, Benton County, Booneville, Kossuth and New Site comprised the six-deep Division 1-3A during the 2015 season. The Aggies finished 11-2 overall, winning 10 straight before suffering a heartbreaking loss to Cleveland East Side in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. KHS also went unscathed in league play, in dominating fashion. The Aggies outscored the other five league members 232-14, with four of the five victories coming via shutout. Kossuth quarterback/defensive back Elijah Potts was named Most Valuable Player, while record-setting running back Jaley Adams was tabbed as the Offensive MVP. Fifth-year Kossuth Head Coach Brian Kelly and his assistants Charlie Dampeer, Richey Dillinger, Jon Harrison, Brandon Pittman and Zack Scott were also named Coaching Staff of the Year. “We almost had the Defensive MVP in Blake Arnold,” said Kelly. Benton County claimed the other high-profile awards. Keenan Hamer earned Defensive MVP, while Special PA G E 3 0

Kossuth’s Elijah Potts (left) was named MVP of Division 1-3A, while Jaley Adams claimed Offensive MVP honors. Teams MVP went to Rod Reaves. Potts, a four-year veteran, played both ways for the Aggies. He rushed for 533 yards and 12 scores and threw for another 1,108 yards and a dozen TDs. “Elijah was hands down our MVP,” said Kelly. “He was our offensive and defensive leader. “He didn’t have a lot of snaps at quarterback coming in, but he’s a great competitor and we knew what we were going to get out of him.” Adams set all kinds of school records and also put his name in the Mississippi book with a 543-yard performance against Corinth. All told the junior rushed for 2,411 yards -- averaging 9.5 per carry -- and 31 touchdowns. “He’s a big, strong runner than can move the chains,” said Kelly. “You have to be
able to run the ball at Kossuth and he did that and made plays.” Kossuth also garnered nine First-Team selections, including five on offense. The Aggies had three senior linemen -- Chazz Bain, Brian Morrison and Jordan Crum -- as well as tight end Sam Mathis among the group. “We couldn’t have done what we did this year without our offensive linemen, and they were honored by a pretty unanimous vote,” said Kelly. “On top of that, Sam is a great blocking tight end and is definitely the best in our division.” The fifth offensive spot went to wide receiver Beau Lee. The lanky junior had 858 yards on 34 catches -25.2 per grab -- and scored on 11 of those. Offensively, the Aggies amassed over 5,250 yards and registered 75 touch-

downs. With three defense/ special teams TDs and extra points and safeties added in, the Aggies put up 537 points -- 41.3 per contest. Kossuth also had four players -- all juniors -- honored on the defensive side in Arnold, a nose guard; linebackers Charlie Bonee and Hunter Brooks; and defensive back Dusty Roberts. Arnold, who just missed out on the Defensive MVP, led the team in tackles for loss. Brooks led the team in tackles, while also finishing second on the team in rushing. Roberts and Bonee were first-year players, but made an impact. Roberts led the team in interceptions, while Bonee -- in addition to linebacker -- was also utilized as a rusher, receiver and passer on offense. “Friday night’s win gave us a lot of confidence,” said BHS Head Coach Cliff Little. The confidence from the semifinal win was much needed. When Biggersville traveled to Corinth less than three weeks ago, they left with a loss ... a 41-point loss. “They were really hot that game,” Little said, noting Corinth’s 11 3-pointers. “We went back and watched the film and saw that we made plenty of mistakes, a lot of them on our own.” Biggersville opened up a 23-17 lead after one with Jada Tubbs and Tyleshia Photo by Randy J. 294 yards and scored four times on as many Kossuth possessions. “Jaley ran with vision and (quarterback) Elijah Potts checked us into the right plays,” said Kelly. Corinth did tally once in the second on a 39-yard draw by Antares Gwyn. The senior, who had gone over 400 yards of offense the previous two games, accounted for 230 yards — 178 rushing — and three touchdowns on 29 plays. Kossuth set the tone again coming out of the half as A.J. Carter came up with a Corinth fumble on the
kickoff. Adams capped the short drive from 7 yards out. Corinth scored on backto-back drives as Gwyn ran in from 59 yards out and scrambled on 4th-and-16 and hit Armad Wicks for a 39 score to make it 47-27 with 3:34 left in the half. Adams then went to work again, going 65 yards after the ensuing kickoff and capping Kossuth’s next drive with a 53-yard sprint — his eighth score of the night.

he’s one of the best on the team, as well as, one of the better ones to wear the “Red & Black.” Still, team accomplishments trump all are easier to achieve when everyone’s on the same page. “Without chemistry there won’t be that many accomplishments,” he said. Quentin Patterson described the team’s chemistry as unselfish … and the numbers back him up. Corinth finished the season with 800 field goals and over half of those (439) came via assist. “Without chemistry in a team sport, you can’t win anything,” said Patterson. Corinth averaged 14.2 assists per game, but everyone got in on the act with five chipping in 2 per contest. While unofficial attempt numbers show Gwyn (404) and Stricklen (348)
well ahead of their teammates, the teams’s top two scorers also ranked 1-2 in assists, respectively. Javen Morrison chimed in with “familiar”. While only playing varsity the last two seasons, he was a member of the junior-varsity squad and played four seasons on the gridiron. “We were all so used to each other’s game that we knew each other’s next move,” said Morrison. “Without chemistry, your team is basically fully of individuals and that doesn’t win games.” Tairek Johnson added in “Dedication,” perfectly fitting for the player who was awarded a varsity suit midway through his sophomore season. the other eight players on the roster, spent three-plus months together before the season tipped off on Nov. 20. They were all members of the Division 1-4A champion football team. “Fam” was also important. Be it family or familiarity. When asked “one word that describes your chemistry,” the veteran Gwyn, sixth man Armad Wicks and Dee Brown — who knocked down a big shot in the title game — had the same answer — “family.” “Chemistry is very important in a team sport because without chemistry you won’t know how one another plays and what one person is better at than the other,” said Gwyn. position for a guard-heavy team. “Knowing your teammates and how they play will better the outcome of any game,” said Johnson of the team’s chemistry. “When playing against others, you as a team should know the positives and negatives amongst each other so you will know what to expect. “Someone’s weakness can also be a positive to another teammate.” Johnson took just 83 shots and often played less than half of a game. Playing time was usually dictated by the size of the other team, but — as his coach and teammates noticed — he was supportive off the floor as well. “He was a great teammate that everyone loved to be around,” said Greene.
