CORINTH 2018-2019 VISITORS GUIDE

h t n i r o c y o j n e # Wall mural encourages selfie from visitors BY L.A. STORY

There’s nothing like a huge wall mural painted on the side a local business to gain attention from curious passersby. The mural is already doing what its creators where hoping it would do. Draw attention to Corinth. The painting on Pizza Grocery’s outside brick wall has certainly drawn attention from those traveling Cruise Street based on the social media comments. Then, after one of the concept creators decided to do a live Facebook post to talk about the mural just before its completion, the curiosity became a full blown buzz. The mural is a fun “selfie wall,” according to Ronnie Sleeper, who is a team member of “Table 3,” of the Strategic Doing workshop group that came up with the concept. The workshop project had to be something that would make Corinth interesting to young people and entice them to want to become part of the Corinth/Alcorn County community. With that operating understanding, he said the six groups were given the opportunity to come up with six projects that would make an immediate impact on the community and make it an interesting place for young families and businesses to want to locate in the area. That was the point. “Our question that we asked ourselves is ‘what would it look like if Corinth was a interesting town that attracted 21st Century talent and business? What would we look like?’ So, that led to a bigger discussion of smaller things we could do to make it begin to become that city,” Sleeper explained. “One of the things that popped up, in the group I am part of, is the selfie wall. Every city seems to have a focal point that makes people want to take their picture in front of it and post it on social media and everybody instantly recognizes — CORINTH 2018-2019 VISITORS GUIDE

“One of the things that popped up, in the group I am part of, is the selfie wall. Every city seems to have a focal point that makes people want to take their picture in front of it and post it on social media and evearybody instantly recognizes — ‘Oh my gosh, that’s Nashville. I know where they are.’” ‘Oh my gosh, that’s Nashville. I know where they are.’” Sleeper’s team desired something similar, but wanted their project to have a distinctive Corinth flavor and tempting enough that people who are active on social media would be drawn to it. They soon settled on an idea. “What says ‘Corinth’ more than a bottle of Coca-Cola? While it’s not a direct Coke ad, and Coke didn’t really have anything to do with the project directly, we just wanted to tip the hat to what’s been a Corinth mainstay for a long time,” said Sleeper. “We also wanted make it so kids would be interested in coming and taking their picture and putting it out on social media.” The design is a hand pouring out a bottle of Coke. Where the beverage is pouring out of the bottle, people will be able to stand underneath and it would look like they are drinking a giant Coca-Cola. People can be as silly or serious as they want to be, but they are “taking in a drink of Corinth and of Coca-Cola.” The hashtag that his team adopted was one the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau had been pushing for some time —#enjoycorinth.

10

Sleeper said his team set a goal to have 1,000 hashtags for “enjoycorinth,” but an interesting thing happened on the way to meet that goal. After planning, they put the project into action. Sleeper noted that no public funds are going into his team’s project. Everything has been supported by local people and paid for by individuals who are interested in seeing the project happen. An intense social media buzz with well over 1,000 hashtags stoked the enthusiasm for Table 3 team members. “I don’t think any one of us was prepared for the reaction we were already getting before it was even finished. That’s the exciting part about it,” said Sleeper. “The goal, of course, is to make it the kind of location or spot where people will go hang out downtown ... and make sure before they leave to go by and take a picture at the selfie wall and put that picture out there on social media with the hashtag and expose our great city to the big ole world out there. It’s really that simple, but it’s amazing how something so simple has such a big impact.” Visitors are encouraged to become part of #enjoycorinth.

CORINTH 2018-2019 VISITORS GUIDE

Green Market lures visitors to downtown Corinth It’s a sun drenched Saturday morning under a cloudless, blue sky and downtown Corinth’s monthly social gathering is booming. There is shopping and food, live music and fellowship, plus free admission to the area’s best kept secret — the Crossroads Museum. And no downtown Corinth event is complete without the sound of an approaching train as a Norfolk-Southern locomotive roars past on its way to Memphis. It’s called the Green Market and after a decade of success, it’s bursting at its seams. Born in 2008 out of a need for more community events, the Green Market was the idea of a Corinth Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau subcommittee. “With the popularity of going green and buying handmade and homegrown items, we knew an event like the Green Market would be a hit,” said Karen Beth Martin, who managed that subcommittee and is often referred to as the “mother of Green Market.” The first Saturday of each month, six months a year, Green Market features an array of handcrafted vendors and plays host to regional artisans and craftsmen who sell their wares in an open air, grassroots setting in the CARE Honor Garden at the Crossroads Museum and Historic Corinth Depot. “Although we really wanted more farmers selling produce in the beginning, it never really worked in our favor,” said Martin. “But from that grew an excellent arts and crafts market that really gave people an outlet to grow.” The event, which won a statewide award for tourism, has many dedicated vendors who offer up handcrafted pottery, clothing, jewelry, woodwork, soap

and birdhouses, just to name a few. Martin said the first few years were tough as the committee worked hard to keep the all-handcrafted integrity of the market. “We had no idea how to run a market and learned a lot,” she said. “I honestly believe if it wasn’t for the committee, we wouldn’t have made it past that first year. The initial team of folks were the perfect combination. Everyone’s strengths and weaknesses made up a well rounded team.” One member of the team was Crossroads Museum Executive Director Brandy Steen, who took over market manager duties from Martin in 2013 when tourism passed ownership of the market to the museum. “The Green Market is a true asset to Corinth and the entire community,” said Steen. “It’s the museum’s premier fundraiser where funds raised from vendor fees each month help keep the doors open. “For visitors coming to Corinth, there may be no better time than on a Green Market weekend.”

All of the earthworks are well marked and have parking spaces or pull-offs and many offer racks for locking bicycles. A few of the sites are easily accessible though most require a walk of from several hundred yards up to a mile. Well-marked paths lead to the sites, and most have informative way side exhibits describing the individual earthworks. Coca-Cola Museum

Jeff Johnson with Meridian (MS) Coca-Cola Bottling Co. signs the visitor’s sheet as he visits the Coca-Cola Museum in Corinth.

Take a step back in time into Corinth’s newest attraction Visitors will find themselves taking a step back in time with a trip to the Corinth CocaCola Museum, the newest attraction recently opened in downtown. The museum features the Coca-Cola collection of the Weaver-Williams family, owners of Corinth Coca-Cola Bottling Group. The family is paying tribute to the soda that was first introduced in Corinth by their ancestors in 1907. Nostalgia items on display at the free admission museum include thousands of authentic memorabilia, a large collection of old fashioned drink machines, a 1929 International Coca-Cola delivery truck, wood barrels that once held Coke syrup and a display of bottles tracking the progression of

28

the distinctively-shaped, iconic bottle. There are interpretive panels that tell the story of Coca-Cola nationally, worldwide and locally; as well as two interpretive computers with touch screens to further enrich the experience. The museum has controlled access. Visitors are buzzed in by the front desk attendant. Once inside the museum, the tour is selfguided. Located at 601 Washington Street, the museum is open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:45 p.m., with the exception of holidays. For information or to schedule group tours, call 662-287-1433 or email museum@corinthcoke.com.
