HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR DONATION
To the
FOOD BANK For over 30 years, the Kelowna and West Kelowna Community Food Banks have provided nutritious meals for struggling families. Now, the amalgamated Central Okanagan Food Bank (COFB) serves between 3,000 and 4,000 individuals per month. This support is possible through individual donations – and while all donations are appreciated, specific kinds of donations make the biggest impact. Here are just a few ways that you can maximize your donation. Monetary Donations are Most Helpful The best way to support Food Bank users is to donate money. The COFB has access to a network of retail partners that sell to us wholesale. That means every dollar you donate to the Food Bank buys three dollars worth of food for a family in need. Donating Food? Try to Think About Meal Planning If you do decide to donate nonperishable food items, it’s best to try to combine items into planned meals. For instance, donating pasta, tomato sauce, and canned vegetables together makes it easy for a family in need to create a quick pasta dish.
Baby Supplies are Always in Demand Many families who receive Food Bank assistance have young children, which is why donating baby supplies is a great way to support the COFB. You can support a family with young children by donating items like baby food, infant formula, diapers, and baby wipes. Plan Your Giving with Legacy Donations Currently, the COFB relies on direct fundraising efforts to fund its programs – but in 2011, we established our own charitable foundation with a long-term plan to sustain the Food Bank budget through foundation grants. With a legacy donation, you can help us to secure the Food Bank’s long-term operations and reduce our reliance on fundraising events. Things We Can’t Use To ensure food safety, we cannot use; alcoholic beverages, items past expiry date, open or partially used items, rusty or unlabeled cans, or severely dented cans. HOW TO
EXPERIENCE THE BEST IN HEARING HEALTH CARE Your hearing health is important. Whether it’s enjoying your favourite music, having a conversation with friends, or being able to respond to sudden sounds and the possible dangers they may indicate, having good hearing is essential to leading a fulfilled life. So how can you ensure that you’re getting the best in hearing health care? Here’s what you need to know. Buyer Beware: “Free” Hearing Tests Aren’t Actually Free Traditionally, hearing clinics will provide all basic hearing tests and batteries for “free” for the lifetime of your hearing aids. But hearing clinics are for-profit businesses, and that means if they’re not charging for hearing tests, they’re finding other ways to make money. Typically, only 1 in every 8 people who take a hearing test will need hearing aids – and that lucky 8th person will likely end up overpaying for hearing aids to cover all of the free tests and overheads associated with the other 7 patients. Don’t get caught being this person! Go Beyond the Clicks and Beeps Most people can hear in a quiet environment with their hearing aids, but will still struggle in social environments.
More in-depth tests can reveal problems that cursory beep tests often miss. Before investing any money into your hearing aids, insist on advanced testing that quantifies physiology, peripheral sensitivity, nerve function, and central processing ability. Trouble Focusing in Noisy Environments is a Unique Hearing Problem Many Ossicle Hearing patients will say that they have perfect hearing, but can’t understand others’ speech in noisy social environments like boardrooms or restaurants. Hearing-In-Noise is a common concern, and it’s perfectly normal. But now, thanks to the new Roger hearing system, it’s possible for patients to experience crystal clear conversations in noisy, crowded environments. When it comes to your hearing health care, make sure you are getting the very best in testing, treatment, and technology by a medical professional that will understand any situation and can customize it for your individual needs. HOW TO
CHOOSE A FULLSERVICE GARAGE Finding a full-service garage that you can trust to properly maintain your car can be a daunting experience. The auto repair and maintenance industry is home to a few bad apples, which unfortunately makes it more difficult to find a reputable garage. That’s why knowing the signs of a trustworthy and competent full-service garage is essential. So how can you tell if the garage you’re dealing with is one you can trust? Here’s what you need to know.
Does the Garage Offer Pre-Planned Maintenance? Most garages simply provide repairs and maintenance on your vehicle when a part breaks or when it’s time to replace dirty oil. But the “fix what’s broken” approach isn’t the ideal way to maintain your vehicle. The best garages will provide you with what’s called pre-planned maintenance, which involves tracking recent repairs and scheduling service based on manufacturer-recommended intervals. At Fifth Avenue Auto, a computerized tracking system calculates your service
intervals based on your driving habits and schedules appointments for you.
Credibility: Look for Awards, Certifications, and Testimonials One of the best ways to determine whether a full-service garage is the right garage for you is to look at what other people are saying. Independent third parties have nothing invested in promoting any given garage, which means you can trust them to provide accurate and trustworthy advice. For instance, awards and certifications from reputable industry associations and other groups are indicators of a garage that you can trust. Fifth Avenue Auto in West Kelowna values transparency and strives to provide motorists with a trustworthy place to get credible advice and great service. As four-time winners at the Greater Westside Board of Trade Key Business Awards, Fifth Avenue Auto is proud to offer a variety of highquality services and an unparalleled preventive maintenance program. GET CASH FOR YOUR
Out With The Old, In With The New! Sell your gold for CASH and get paid up to 100% MORE* in additional product discounts. From watches to guitars to a new laptop for the kids.
OLD GOLD What is your old jewellery doing for you? It could be giving you hundreds to thousands of dollars. With gold hovering near 5 year highs now is a great time to cash in and get extra money for the holidays! Did you know that a broken 14K necklace the same weight as a penny is worth more than $50 right now? Or that many old coins are worth more than 10X their value in silver alone? At Premier we specialize in buying (and selling) gold, diamonds and pre-owned luxury watches like Rolex, Breitling and Omega. Opened in 1995 we have 21 years of experience and are BBB A+ rated. Our jewellery buyers are trained by the Gemological Institute of America (who invented the 4 C’s of diamond grading) as well as the Diamond Council of America. We purchase anything from gold teeth to 2 carat diamonds. Even old, broken or out of style pieces can still be quite valuable for their gold value alone. You get paid in cash on the spot so there is no risk to you. In addition, the transaction is fully confidential and the money you receive is tax free and yours to keep! The sales process is simple, transparent and easy. In many cases it’s done in under 10 minutes from quote to cash in hand. Here’s how: 1. Gather your items. Remember to bring any paperwork (appraisals, certificates, receipts) as they may increase value. We pay premiums for branded pieces and Canadian diamonds so the paper trail makes a difference. 2. Stop by at a time that’s convenient for you. You don’t need to book an appointment as our buyers are available 7 days a week. If you have
a larger quantity come a little earlier so there is time to test and quote. 3. The assessment process is transparent and risk free. There is no obligation to sell and the quote is free. You stay with your jewellery the whole time and are welcome to watch the entire process. We begin by sorting your jewellery into purity based on it’s karat stamp. This helps make sure you get the best value for your higher karat items. From there appraised pieces and items with diamonds are pulled out for special consideration. Our accredited buyers will verify the jewellery using state of the art X-ray systems to determine authenticity. Less sophisticated firms need to scratch your items or use acids to test purity but our X-ray system is completely non-destructive and much more accurate. It was built by the same company that built the X-ray systems for the MARS rover. 4. We’ll make a cash purchase offer on your jewellery. Once you approve the offer the transaction is written up and you’ll be paid in cash immediately. Please bring a piece of valid photo identification such as a drivers license or passport. Even if you’re not selling it’s important to think about safety and security. You may have hundreds (or thousands) of dollars sitting in a box on your dresser. Treat jewellery like it was cash: if you wouldn’t leave $1000 lying around you probably shouldn’t leave your jewellery sitting at home alone. Consider purchasing a safe or storing it in a safety deposit box if you’re not wearing it.

HOW TO
DETERMINE WHEN IT’S TIME TO REPLACE YOUR CURRENT FURNITURE - AND WHERE TO START For most homeowners, replacing your household furniture is both fun and challenging. Buying new furniture offers a great opportunity to change the ambiance in your home and create an entirely new style. But if you’re not sure where to start or how to incorporate family heirlooms into an entirely new design, replacing your furniture can be stressful. Here are just a few ways that you can create the home of your dreams – without the headaches.
How to Tell When It’s Time for a Change There are a few different events that can signal a need for a change of furniture. Some of them are fairly straightforward – for instance, if you’re downsizing to a smaller house and need smaller furniture – but some aren’t so obvious. You’ll know that it’s time to swap out your furniture if you feel bored with it, if your home feels tired, or if you’ve done a recent renovation and your furniture no longer looks at home in the new space.
Start With Your Personality First and foremost, the best way to make sure you’re choosing the right furniture for your home is to ensure that the furniture and décor design matches your personality. When you walk into a furniture store, talk to the sales associates about what your end game is – are you trying to create a postmodern artsy loft vibe, or a traditional rustic atmosphere?
The Right Kind of Wood Makes All the Difference Most homeowners replace their furniture every 7 years, but furniture trends change far more often. It’s not always easy to keep up with the trends, but it’s often less about the style and more about the wood. Replacing your old oak wood furniture with darkstained maple can give your home a modern and trendy look. Here at Fanny’s Furniture, we offer a wide array of maple furniture with over 12 different stain colours. For those looking for the older style, we still carry oak pieces, and can custom craft furniture in nearly any colour, style, or size. Contact Fanny’s Furniture today to learn more.

HOW TO
Painful Feet? DETERMINE IF YOU
NEED TO SEE A PODIATRIST
Your feet may not be on your mind very often, but they’re something you shouldn’t take for granted. Something as simple as standing up is only possible because you have healthy feet – and if you want to maintain your foot health, seeing a podiatrist when problems arise is essential. So how do you know when it’s time to take a stroll and see the foot doctor? Here’s what you need to know. Pain: It’s Not Just a Result of Getting Older
Foot pain doesn’t necessarily indicate a serious problem, but it’s also not something you should simply ignore. Contrary to popular opinion, foot pain is not just a symptom of aging. If you experience pain in your foot, it could be indicative of problems like heel spurs or tendonitis. A trained podiatrist can determine if your foot pain is a symptom of a larger problem. Frequent Swelling and Numbness Can Indicate Nerve Damage While intermittent swelling and numbness aren’t a cause for concern, if you start to experience numb and swollen feet on a regular basis, you’ll
want to make an appointment with a podiatrist as soon as possible. Swelling can be a symptom of a break – and if left untreated, a broken foot can heal improperly. Numbness is another important sign to look for – if you experience numb and tingling feet, it may be a sign of nerve damage. Don’t Let Minor Problems Snowball A large number of foot ailments are interrelated. Typically, problems like heel pain can lead to joint pain if untreated, while toenail fungus can contribute to problems like athlete’s foot and cellulitis. That’s why it’s important to schedule regular appointments with your podiatrist, even if you’re not experiencing major symptoms. A trained podiatrist can pinpoint risk factors and help you to ward off problems before they begin – or stop them before they get worse. Dr. Neil Brown Podiatry specializes in diabetic foot care and treating foot injuries, and can also provide advice for improving athletic performance through proper foot care. For more information or to schedule your appointment, visit kelownafootdoctor.com.
What do your Feet really need? • Nail/Callus Care • Diabetic Assessment • Custom Orthotics • Arthritis Pain
• Athletic Performance • Alleviate Foot Pain • Look & Feel Good
It is important to look after your feet on a daily basis. This includes hand to foot contact with warm, soapy water during hygiene and inspection for skin colour changes, nail thickening, and any unusual lumps or bumps. While you should be paying attention, a periodic checkup can eliminate or prevent foot deformities. Not being able to enjoy walking, running or engage in healthy exercise because of foot pain, fear of injury, or concern for limitations brought on by diabetes are challenges that drive me to succeed for all of my patients.

HOW TO
The human body needs to stay within a safe temperature range in order to function property, so it’s extremely important to plan ahead and layer appropriately when you are out in the elements doing the things you like to do. Staying warm and dry is key, so layer up! Layers are crucial, and when used in combination with each other will reach the ideal effect for the season, environment, and activity you are pursuing. They work together to wick moisture, trap in heat, insulate from cold and block wind and weather. Ideally what makes a splendid system includes a base layer, mid layer, insulation layer and hard shell layer. With today’s technology, it’s quite easy to find gear that aligns with an active lifestyle and we recommend hands down, Patagonia. How do you pack clothing for an outdoor adventure when there’s no way of predicting what the weather will be like in an hour’s time, never mind three or four hours from now? The answer is layers. Using multiple layers of clothing is not only one of the best ways of keeping warm in very cold weather, but it also gives you much needed flexibility when it comes to hot weather, rain, wind and everything else in between. Here’s Trout Water’s guide to dressing the part for your Patagonia hike in layers, starting from the bottom up!
Base Layer
LAYER PROPERLY FOR THE
GREAT OUTDOORS Fly fishing is a great year-round pastime for avid anglers – and those who prefer to fish in the winter will find an abundant supply of fish with little competition from other fishermen. But before you head out and start attaching lures, you’ll want to ensure you’re well prepared to withstand the elements. Here’s how you can stay warm while on the hunt for your next catch. A Lightweight, Fast-Drying Base Layer is Essential The base layer is the layer closest to your body, and it’s the most important of the three layers. The ideal base layer will keep moisture away from your skin while drying quickly – in other words, it’ll be a thin, light synthetic layer. The best base layer is clothing made of polypropylene or polyester. Look for a Warm Fleece or Wool Mid Layer The mid layer serves two purposes: It pulls moisture away from the body while trapping heat in. That means your mid layer should consist of some form of breathable yet warm fabric. Fleece and
wool are both excellent choices. Dry wool is typically a better insulator than dry fleece, but fleece performs better when wet and is easier to wring out. Make sure you choose the right fabric for your needs.
The main job of the base layer is to keep you covered and to ensure that perspiration is drawn away from the body. Since it will be in direct contact with your skin at all times, your base layer should be made from synthetic fabric and for changing weather conditions you should consider taking both long and short-sleeved tops to ensure you are prepared for any eventuality.
Insulating Layer This is the layer you’ll add when the temperature starts to drop, so a fleece jacket or medium weight sweater is ideal. Alternatively you might prefer a downfilled, or synthetic-filled jacket. Don’t worry about wind or rain proofing, that’s the job of the next layer.
The Outer Layer: A Breathable Waterproof Jacket is Best The outer layer is designed to block wind and water, and should be tough enough to handle some abuse like getting snagged on tree branches. It also needs to be breathable. The ideal outer layer consists of a waterproof membrane jacket and trousers. Gore-Tex is a popular outer layer material that is both weather-resistant and breathable. Winter fishing is a fun pastime, but it can easily become a less-than-enjoyable experience if your attire doesn’t keep you warm and dry. With the right layering strategy, you can keep the cold and moisture out and be free to enjoy your fishing trip. Trout Waters is the BC Interior’s largest Patagonia dealer, and can help you find the exact equipment you’ll need for a winter fishing trip. Visit Trout Waters to learn more.
Rain and Wind Proof Layer When it starts to pour, some people advocate just getting wet as the sun is often along soon after to dry you out. However, most people who try that strategy once, don’t try it again. Adding a lightweight waterproof jacket to your pack won’t weigh you down and you’re guaranteed to appreciate it when dark clouds loom overhead. It should also keep the wind from blowing right through your fleece underneath.

Getting the flu is most definitely unpleasant, but in some cases, it can become life threatening. Thankfully, there are a variety of simple steps you can take to stay healthy this winter. Here are a few things you can do to reduce your risk of getting the flu.
The Flu Shot: The Most Effective Way to Stay Healthy By and large, the absolute best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get your annual flu shot. This year’s vaccine protects against the three most common strains of influenza, with some vaccines also protecting against the Phuket strain. The flu vaccine is available free of charge to young children, pregnant women, the elderly, healthcare workers, and immune-compromised individuals.
Personal Hygiene Tips for Flu Season In addition to getting vaccinated, you
can reduce your risk of getting the flu by taking certain precautions. Regularly washing your hands is a great way to prevent exposure to influenza viruses. You’ll also want to promptly dispose of used tissues, cough into your shirtsleeve rather than your hands, and keep your hands away from your face. Finally, make sure you regularly disinfect commonly touched surface areas like keyboards and doorknobs.
Feeling Sick? Just Stay Home Flu symptoms can include headaches, fever, muscle pain, sore throat, coughing, and a runny nose. These symptoms can last anywhere from 7 to 10 days, with a cough often lingering for up to 2 weeks. If you start to feel sick, you’ll want to simply stay home, stay hydrated, and manage fever with medications like ibuprofen. Public flu shot clinics start on November 1, while Interior Health will be providing additional flu shots by appointment from December through to March. For more information about the flu shot, contact the Public Health Flu Information Line at 250-868-7715.

PREPARE FOR LIFE’S MAJOR TRANSITIONS by Scott McKinnon When life requires a major transition like moving, down-sizing, relocating or combining two households, there are many challenges that will inevitably arise – including managing your furniture and home décor. Starting with larger items is usually best. Consider your current situation and your upcoming transition space, and work on downsizing well in advance of the move. Many people downsize once their kids move out or when a spouse transitions into a care home. Take inventory of what you have now, and determine what will fit into your new space. Keep items like family heirlooms, lamps, and an entryway table if they will work in your new space. With space at a premium, you may have to sell or donate your “oversized items” and buy smaller to fit your new space. Relocating out of town? Consider selling most of your possessions and re-buying once you settle in. The cost of packing, moving and storing until you have a new home can be astronomical. It’s more cost effective
to sell as much as you can and buy replacement items later. If combining households, decide what will stay, and what items must go. See what items work together and dispose of the duplicates and mismatching items. To simplify your transition, consider consigning your gently used furniture and clothing at a consignment store. Most consignment stores ask you to email photos of larger items prior to acceptance, so be sure to take pictures while items are still set up in your current home. Look up the store’s acceptance policy, the best times to deliver, and what the terms and conditions are. Stores need advance notice to ensure they have room to accommodate your items. To get the most for your goods, spend time thoroughly cleaning your items and doing minor repairs. If you don’t, they may not be accepted or you will receive considerably less money for them. Make a list of your items as you are packing them (this is often required by the store) and it’s easier to do as you pack.
