THE DAILY COURIER, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2016
AUDI A3/S3
STATUS: A new plug-in-hybrid model added — The smallest sedan in Audi’s garage is arguably one of the prettiest. Body styles remain a four-door sedan and a two-door cabriolet (convertible), however those who long for the utility of a small hatchback will have to content themselves with the new A3 Sportback etron plug-in hybrid. It can run for up to 27 kilometres on battery before the 150-horsepower turbo-four-cylinder kicks in (the system makes a net 204 horses). DRIVETRAIN: Base front-wheel-drive models use a turbocharged 170-horsepower 1.8litre four-cylinder. A turbocharged 220-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder is standard in allwheel-drive (Quattro) versions and a more powerful 290-horsepower version of the 2.0 is found in the sporty S3. All engines employ a six-speed automated-manual transmission that produces rapid-fire upshifts and downshifts. Of course, Audi tempts you with an array of options including a navigation system, LED headlights and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound package. Base price (incl. destination): $39,600; $42,900 (e-tron) Type: Four-door compact sedan/wagon/twodoor convertible Engines (h.p.): 1.8-litre I-4, turbocharged (170); 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (220-290, S3); 1.4-litre I-4, turbocharged I-4 (150) with 75-kilowatt motor (204, combined) Transmission: Six-speed automated manual Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.0/7.1/8.7/ (1.8) Base weight (kg): 1,440
A4
STATUS: Redesigned for 2017 — The latest A4 combines handsome and sporty into one tidy package. The car’s sheetmetal receives modest revisions, compared to the 2016 edition, and overall dimensions increase slightly. Still, the A4’s slightly more aggressive grille and nose, larger headlight pods (with optional LEDs) and new LED taillights help paint a prettier picture of an already attractive design.
DRIVERTRAIN: For now, a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 190 horsepower in base front-wheel-drive trim and 252 in all-wheel-drive (Quattro) models is the only available engine. A seven-speed paddle-shift transmission replaces the eight-speed automatic while the six-speed manual is history. All engines employ a six-speed automatedmanual transmission that produces rapid-fire upshifts and downshifts. Of course, Audi tempts you with an array of options including a navigation system, LED headlights and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound package. Base price (incl. destination): $40,500 Type: Four-door sedan Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (190-252) Transmission: Seven-speed automated manual Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.9/7.6/8.9 Base weight (kg): 1,545
A4 ALLROAD
STATUS: Redesigned for 2017 — The 2017 Allroad is a derivative of the recently released A4 sedan and the A4 Avant wagon, the latter of which isn’t sold in North America. The wagon continues to project an aggressive attitude with its flared fenders with blackened trim (bodycolored trim is available with certain paint schemes) and underbody protection from rocks and stumps. The well-tailored cabin leans toward the luxury side of the spectrum, with the possible exception of the non-integrated display screen that appears tacked on as an afterthought. DRIVETRAIN: What is appealing is the new turbocharged four-cylinder that dishes out 252horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Audi claims the Allroad is capable of sprints to 60 mph (96 km/h) from rest is less than six seconds, or about a half-second quicker than before. Also new is a rapid-shifting sevenspeed automated manual transmission that replaces the previous eight-speed automatic. Of course Audi’s all-wheel-drive Quattro system is standard. It comes with what the automaker calls “wheel selective torque control” whereby light braking is applied to the inside wheels while cornering. Base price (incl. destination): $49,600 Type: Four-door, five-passenger tall wagon Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (252) Transmission: Seven-speed automated manual Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.2/8.4/9.9 Base weight (kg): 1,700
A6/S6
STATUS: Refreshed for 2016, turbo-diesel remains on hiatus for 2017 — Audi's A6 line received a mid-life freshening for 2016, including a front fascia with LED headlights and a tweaked corporate grille. Inside, a stunning wrap-around-style dashboard deserves to be displayed in a modern-art museum. Regular A6 and high-performance S6 models come standard with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. DRIVETRAIN: The A6’s base turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine has jumped from to 252 horsepower from 220. Meanwhile the optional supercharged V-6 now makes 333 horses instead of 310. The top-performing S6 runs with a twin-turbocharged 450-horsepower V-8 that launches the car to 60 mph from rest in 4.4 seconds. The S6 is connected to a sevenspeed automated manual (dual-clutch) transmission, while the 2.0 and V-6 use an eightspeed automatic. Along with a veritable cornucopia of base content, there's available genuine wood trim, premium 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system and a dash-mounted pop-up driver information/navigation screen to spruce up the cabin to an even greater degree. Of course, adding these items will add thousands to the A6’s base price. Base price (incl. destination): $60,600 Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (252); 3.0-litre V-6, supercharged (333); 4.0litre V-8, twin-turbocharged (450) Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic; seven-speed automated manual (S6) Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km(city/highway/combined): 10.8/7.3/9.2 (2.0) Base weight (kg): 1,690
Q3
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — The smallest of Audi’s Q-wagons is based on parent Volkswagen's Tiguan wagon architecture. The Q3 has a simple yet neatly balanced appearance with just the right body-to-window-glass ratio and a liftgate that's angled in a way that avoids the boxy appearance of some of its competitors. The interior is also pure Audi in that it eschews the overwrought styling
approach and instead sticks to simple, elegant shapes for the dashboard, center control stack and floor console. DRIVETRAIN: Standard for the Q3, as it is with a number of Audi (and VW) vehicles, is a 200-horsepower four-cylinder engine that’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. Audi’s all-wheel-drive (Quattro) system is included on all trims. Base models include dualzone climate control, panoramic sunroof and heated 12-way power front seats with leather. Up-level models add a navigation system, power tailgate, premium 14-speaker Bosebrand sound system and park assist that uses a rearview camera in concert with audible front and rear distance warning. There are also a few stand-alone options to consider, including walnut trim and a Sport Package with extra side bolstering and transmission paddle shifters. Base price (incl. destination): $40,000 Type: Compact tall wagon Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4 (200) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.9/8.4/10.3 Base weight (kg): 1,600
BMW 3 SERIES
STATUS: Major powertrain upgrades – The 3 Series sedan, wagon and GT hatchback remain the vehicles that many other automakers covet. DRIVETRAIN: The 320i Sedan remains the starting point with its 180-horsepower 2.0-litre engine. Then follows the 330i (formerly 328i) Sedan and wagon with an all-new 248 horsepower version of the I-4 (up from 240). That same engine is also found in the 330e plug-in hybrid that works with an 87-horsepower electric motor (fed from lithium-ion batteries) to produce 248 combined horses. Likewise, the 340i (formerly 335i) receives a new inline 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that increases output to 320 horsepower from 300. Unchanged is the 328d turbo-diesel’s 180 horsepower (and 280 poundfeet of torque). For those wanting a bit more oomph, the 2017 M3 rockets from 0-60 mph (96 km-h) in 3.9-seconds via its turbocharged 425-horsepower 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models except the M3, which gets a six-speed automatic, or optional seven-speed automated manual. For 2017 there are minor interior changes and a few optional items are now standard equipment. Base price (incl. destination): $42,050 Type: Four-door sedan/wagon/hatchback

X3
there’s the cream of the crop X5 M, with its mind-blowing 567 horsepower and $109,000 price tag. The X5 M’s all-wheel-drive system, combined with gobs of power, propels this 2,390-klilogram behemoth from zero to 100 km-h mph just over four-seconds. All X5 models are outfitted with eight-speed automatic transmissions and naturally come with oodles of both standard and optional features designed to make the voyage quick, safe and comfortable. Base price (incl. destination): $68,400 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicleEngines (h.p.): 3.0-litre turbocharged I-6 (300); 4.4-litre V-8, twin-turbocharged (445-567, 3.0-litre I-6, turbo-diesel (255); 2.0-litre I-4 with electric motor (308) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 13.0/9.7/11.5 Base weight (kg): 2,100
BUICK STATUS: Unchanged – BMW reports that for now body styles (sedan and GT hatchback), pricing, standard equipment, lines, packages, and optional equipment remain unchanged for the 2017 model year, so that simply means a quick refresher on the 5 Series. Every engine, from the base four-cylinder to the M5’s V8, uses at least one turbocharger and the 3.0-litre turbodiesel returns with good power and great torque. Available in all-wheel drive, the 5 Series sedans and wagon all come with 8-speed automatic transmissions, sport/manual shift modes, and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. DRIVETRAIN: The top dog M5 is back with a whopping 560 horsepower and uses its 500 pound-feet of torque to propel itself from 0-60 mph (96 km-h) in a scant 4.2 seconds. The M5, like its smaller sibling the M3, is also a unicorn of sorts, as it is available with an optional manual transmission. Exterior styling remains elegant on the 5 Series and interiors are comfortable and well appointed, as one would expect from BMW. With eight variations of the 5 Series to choose from (plus the M5), there is most likely one to suit most luxury sedan buyers. Base price (incl. destination): $62,650 Type: Four-door sedan Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre turbocharged I-4 (240); 3.0-litre I-6, turbo-diesel (255); 3.0-litre I-6, turbocharged (300, 335-hybrid); 4.4-litre V8, turbocharged (445, 560-M5)Transmission: Eight-speed automatic; six-speed manual (M5); seven-speed automated manual (M5) Drivetrain: Rear- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.5/6.9/8.9 Base Weight (kg): 1,770
STATUS: Carries over mostly unchanged – The X3 is part of a trio of tall wagons (crossovers) that wear the BMW propeller logo. Now into its fourth year since the last major redesign, the main (and minor) changes for 2017 are inside the cabin. DRIVETRAIN: The base xDrive28i is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre fourcylinder engine with 240 horsepower and 258pound-feet of torque, while the xDrive35i sports a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 3.0-liter six-cylinder powerplant that produces an even 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque and is paired with the same eight-speed automatic transmission as the xDrive28i. Being “xDrive” models means that both come with standard all-wheel-drive. In addition, autoadjusting shock absorbers with Normal, Sport and Sport-Plus settings also help in the handling department. The X3 comes with a lengthy list of standard convenience and safety features, which now include USB and Bluetooth improvements, backup camera, and navigation upgrade. A couple of paint and upholstery options have each come and gone, rounding out the minor adjustments for 2017. Base price (incl. destination): $51,000 Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre i-4, turbocharged (240); 3.0-litre I6, twin-turbocharged (300) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/hwy/combined): 11.1/8.4/9.9 Base weight (kg): 1,830
7 SERIES
X4
ENVISION
VERANO
STATUS: New for 2017 — The five-passenger mid-size Envision slots between the sevenpassenger Enclave and the sub-compact Encore. It arrives at a time when up-level wagons are in big demand and automakers are scrambling to bring more of them to market. The Envision’s overall styling is reminiscent of the larger Enclave, particularly in the rounded, bulging shape of the front fenders. The same goes for the interior that’s all elegance and sophistication, with fancy wood and stitched leather trim. Buick claims the Envision competes favorably with the segment leaders in stowage room. DRIVETRAIN: All-wheel-drive is standard, but the system depends on the engine. Models with the turbo 2.0-litre get an “Active TwinClutch” system with a rear differential that distributes added torque to the outside wheel when turning (called torque vectoring). The torque-vectoring feature isn’t available with the non-turbo 2.5-litre base engine. Although some might balk at the Envision’s Chinese connection, chances are that how it looks, the way it drives and the high level of contentwill ultimately take precedence. Base price (incl. destination): $35,000 Type: Five-passenger tall wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.5-litre I-4 (197), 2.0-litre I4, turbocharged (252) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.2/7.5/9.5 (2.5) Base weight (kg): 1,300
ENCORE STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — Just about luxury brand has a flagship model and the 7 Series takes its place atop the BMW lineup. Both the regular- wheelbase 750Li xDrive and long-wheelbase 750Li xDrive were completely made over for 2016 and are built using plenty of lightweight aluminum and carbon fibre. The interior is chock-full of innovation (try a display screen that responds to various non-contact hand gestures or an optional key fob with a built-in 2.2-inch digital screen allows you to remotely park/unpark the car, set the climate control to the desired temperature and turn the exterior lights on or off). DRIVETRAIN: Each body size operates using a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 that produces 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive is also common to both models. For something really special, the special-order Alpina B7 is in a league of its own with an astonishing 600 horsepower, 0-100-km time of 3.8 seconds, and 309 km-h top speed. Base price (incl. destination): $115,000 Type: Four-door luxury sedan Engine (h.p.): 4.4-litre V-8, twin-turbocharged (445) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 14.3/12.3/9.1 Base weight (kg.): 2,090
X1
STATUS: Significant change – The base X4 xDrive28i with its turbocharged 2.0-litrefourcylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower is still there, however, gone from the lineup is the X4 xDrive35i. In its place is the all-new X4 M40i, with its 3.0-litre M Performance “TwinPower” turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine that cranks out 355 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque. Both X4 models are putting the power to all four wheels via an eightspeed automatic transmission with Sport/Manual shift modes and steering wheelmounted paddle shifters. Likewise, both also possess all-wheel-drive systems that shift torque to the outside rear wheel when turning to increase stability. Base content includes a power moonroof and liftgate, eight-way power front seats, backup warning system, superbright xenon headlights, and rain-sensing wipers. Like the X3, the X4 comes with a lengthy list of standard convenience and safety features, which now include USB and Bluetooth improvements, backup camera, and navigation upgrade. Lastly, a few paint and upholstery options have also come and gone, namely for the base model. Base price (incl. destination): $50,850 Type: Four-door hatchback Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (240); 3.0-litre I-6, turbocharged (355) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11/7/8.4/10.2 Base weight (kg): 1,880
X5
STATUS: Minor changes – To review its history, BMW mounted the X1 logo on a chassis developed for BMW's Mini division, which means it's essentially a front-wheel-drive model with added all-wheel-drive hardware similar to that used on the Mini Countryman. The system turns the front wheels only in ideal conditions, but can shift up to 100 per cent of the torque to the rear wheels when traction is needed. Standard suspension is in place and the M Sport package sees an M Sport suspension. DRIVETRAIN: Powering the X1 is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 228 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. This is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with sport and manual shift modes. All X1s come with the usual assort-
STATUS: Final year for this Chevy Cruzebased sedan — It might be tough to believe that it has been six years since the Verano became a serious option for entry-level luxury buyers. Unfortunately, it’s also the last year, as Buick focuses on expanding its tall wagon (crossover) lineup. DRIVETRAIN: For its final bow the optional 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine has been dropped, leaving the 180horse non-turbo along with a six-speed automatic transmission to remain until the end. The Verano's reputation for a quiet ride is enhanced with five layers of acoustic material within the headliner, sound-absorbing foam and other insulating materials stuffed into every possible nook and cranny, all door openings are triple sealed and the use of thicker windshield and side glass for additional noise reduction. Other measures include specially designed tires and alloy wheels plus "quiet-tuned" intake and exhaust systems. Standard gear includes dualzone climate control, a rear-view camera, 10 standard airbags and GM's OnStar concierge/help line that can also activate various functions (open doors, check fuel level, etc.) from your smart phone. Base price (incl. destination): $25,900 Type: Four-door sedan Engine (h.p.): 2.4-liter 1-4 (180) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway): 11.3/7.6/9.7 Base weight (kg): 1,500
CADILLAC XT5
STATUS: Updated exterior and minor interior adjustments — From out of nowhere four years ago, Buick’s small and tall wagon is now the brand’s best-selling model. It uses the same platform as the Chevrolet Sonic sub-compact sedan and hatchback, however it's about 18 centimetres longer and 13 centimetres taller than the latter. The front passenger seat folds flat so that stuff like ladders and building materials can be more easily accommodated. The cabin is also on the receiving end of one of Buick's more fashionable interiors. It has active noise cancellation that uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect engine sounds; then a special computer dishes out counteracting sound waves through the audio system. DRIVETRAIN: A 138 horsepower four-cylinder is standard, but that output kicks up to 153 horses in the Sport Touring trim level. Both engines use the same six-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel-drive system. The Encore’s grille, headlamps, taillights and 18-inch wheels are new this year, while on the inside push-button start and a redesigned instrument cluster head the list of changes. Base price (incl. destination): $30,300 Type: Sub-compact tall wagon Engine (h.p.): 1.4-litre I-4, turbocharged (138; 153, Sport Touring) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.3/7.2/8.3 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,470
LACROSSE STATUS: Minor changes – There are so many variations to the X5 that it will make your head spin. It all starts with the base xDrive35i that’s the recipient of a 300-horsepower 3.0litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine. DRIVETRAIN: Moving up, the xDrive40e plug-in hybrid gets its power from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 111-horsepower electric motor for a net 308 horsepower. The lithium-ion battery allows for up to 21 kilometres on electric-power alone. The xDrive 35d turbodiesel’s inline I6 makes 355 horsepower and, more importantly, 413 pound-feet of torque. Stepping up again, the xDrive50i houses a turbocharged V-8 that lays down 445 horsepower. And if that isn’t enough,
been popular with buyers of “a certain age” for many years. They and more youthful drivers who prefer spacious, well-appointed cars with equally cavernous trunks are in for a treat as an all-new LaCrosse comes to market. Simply put, this one’s a stunner that makes other in its class appear instantly dated and could give Cadillac’s sedans a run for their money. In particular, a new waterfall grille is much more subtle (read: classier) than previous Buicks. DRIVETRAIN: The base, Preferred, Essence and Premium trim levels (the latter available with all-wheel-drive) run with Buick’s updated V-6 and new eight-speed transmission. That combo should ensure a solid performance off the line and in the passing lane, although excising the previous 182-horsepower quasi-hybrid four-cylinder engine means that fuel economy numbers take a hit. Naturally all the latest accident-mitigating safety management features are on the LaCrosse’s extra-cost list. Base price (incl. destination): $41,800 Type: Four-door sedan Engine: (h.p.): 3.6-litre V-6 (310) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.1/8.4/9.9 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,640
STATUS: All new for 2017 — The five-passenger XT5 wagon shares virtually nothing with the SRX it replaces. Even so, Cadillac chose not to fiddle too much with the overall dimensions, other than a five-centimetre increase between the front and rear wheels. That results in more rear-seat legroom plus a bit more stowage space behind the split-folding secondrow bench. Both the SRX and XT5 share similar traits, but the latter’s front and rear ends are considerably sleeker and the side body panels are more sharply defined. But what really separates the old from the new is an allnew platform that’s lighter by about 23 kilograms. DRIVETRAIN: The reduced heft helps the standard V-6 that has been engineered for slightly more spunkiness and includes cylinder deactivation that shuts down two of the six cylinders under light load conditions for reduced fuel consumption. Sending twisting force to the front or all four wheels (if the optional all-wheeldrive is selected) is handled by an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift paddles. Base price (incl. destination): $47,200 Type: Four-door tall wagon Engine (h.p.): 3.6-litre V-6 (310) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Layout: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 12.1/8.6/10.5 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,945

STATUS: New for 2017 — Buick has been doing well with its trio of crossovers (wagons), including the recently released mid-size Envision. Still it hasn’t forgotten its full-size sedan roots, in particular the LaCrosse that has
STATUS: All models carry over for 2017 — Cadillac is working hard to establish the ATS as a prime alternative to buying other premium compact brands, and those efforts are slowly beginning to pay off.

DRIVETRAIN: To reinforce the ATS’s image as a performance model, the base 202-horsepower four-cylinder has departed, leaving the next-in-line turbocharged I-4 as the starting point and a non-turbo V-6 optional. But for some serious action, the ATS-V sedan or coupe uses the same twin-turbocharged V6 found in its larger siblings' V-sport trim, but here it develops 464 horsepower. The reardrive “V” can be had with either a six-speed manual transmission with active rev-matching for no-lift-shifts, or an eight-speed automatic. Using the standard launch control, the ATS-V does zero-to-60-mph (96 km-h) in 3.8 seconds. The "V" rides on special 18-inch wheels that wrapped in Michelin rubber. Available content packages add more carbon fiber and a higher level of track-readiness, should you desire. Interior ATS-V content includes more supportive 16-way Recaro-brand seats, and plenty of hand-stitched leather. Base price (incl. destination): $40,200 (sedan); $42,600 (Coupe); $68,100 (V sedan); $70,400 (V Coupe) Type: Four-door sedan; two-door coupe Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (272); 3.6-litre V-6 (335); 3.6-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (464) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; eightspeed automatic Drivetrain: Rear- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.6/7.7/9.3 (2.0) Base weight (kg): 1,530
or enough to get most folks where they need to go. The tall roofline and squared-off body aid passenger comfort and stowage capacity with the split folding back upright or flat. DRIVETRAIN: Chevrolet claims the Bolt can sprint to 60 mph (96 km-h) from rest in less than seven seconds (right up there with BMW’s i3 electric), thanks to the motor’s 266 pound feet of torque that kicks in right in from the get go. Special 17-inch Michelin Energy Saver tires help extend the EV’s range, as does regenerative braking. All of the car’s basic components — motor, lithium-ion battery pack, onboard charging system, instrument panel and infotainment system — are supplied by LG Group of Korea. The batteries are positioned along the floor and beneath the rear seat to help keep the centre of gravity as low as possible. But the best news is the EV’s Tesla-beating (for now) range and affordable price. Base price (incl. destination): $37,500 Type: Four-door hatchback sedan Base engine (h.p.): Electric motor (200) Transmission: Single-speed controller Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (equivalent) city/highway/combined: 1.8/2.1/2.0 Weight (kg): 1,640
CAMARO
ESCALADE
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — For those who enjoy living and driving large, Cadillac has the ultimate juggernaut. The Escalade and extended-size Escalade ESV are more like luxury staterooms or penthouses on wheels. In the Escalade's case, first class combines maximum comfort and performance, along with rugged all-road capability that it shares with General Motors' less-expensive Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon relatives. The ESV is 51 centimetres longer and has a 35centimetre wheelbase advantage over the standard-size Escalade. DRIVETRAIN: Equipped with a standard Chevrolet-Corvette-based V-8, Cadillac claims the Escalade can dash to 60 mph (96 km-h) from rest in less than six seconds Four-wheeldrive is standard in both the regular-length and extended ESV Escalades. It can be left in fully automatic mode, or in manually selected "4 HI" for added traction in mud and snow conditions. Base price (incl. destination): $84,400 Type: Four-door luxury sport-utility vehicle Base engine (h.p.): 6.2-litre V-8 (420) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: Four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 16.1/11.7/14.1 Base weight (kg): 2,445
STATUS: Carryover with one important addition — The battle for horsepower supremacy continues unabated between General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler and their respective rear-wheel-drive sporty models. The latest salvo sees the return of the Camaro ZL1 to the lineup in all its supercharged V-8 glory (thanks, Corvette) and available in coupe and convertible body styles. With this latest entry from Chevrolet, what more could fans of old-schoolstyle American muscle want? Meanwhile, buyers are now settling in to the significantly lighter sixth-generation Camaro that launched for 2016. Although it looks similar to the previous edition, the Camaro now has a stiffer chassis (shared with the Cadillac CTS and ATS) and a thoroughly revised interior. The Camaro’s existing turbo-four, six and eight-cylinder engines return, providing a range of performance options and price tags. Base price (incl. destination): $30,900 Type: Two-door sports coupe/convertible Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (275); 3.6-litre V-6 (335); 6.2-litre OHV V-8 (455); 6.2-litre V-8, supercharged (640, ZL1) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; eightspeed automatic, ten-speed automatic (ZL1) Drivetrain: Rear-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.9/10.0/8.1 (I-4, MT) Base weight (kg): 1,520
CORVETTE
CT6
STATUS: New for 2016, a carryover for 2017 — If there are niches to fill in the luxury car category, Cadillac appears determined to fill them. The CT6 combines luxury appointments, prodigious power, knife-edgy design and, last but not least, lithe and lightweight construction. To this point, Cadillac claims that the CT6 tips the scales below the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-series sedans and weighs about the same as the smaller Cadillac CTS (the CT6 has more than 20 centimetres grafted in between the front and rear wheels). Assisting in the pound-paring quest is a 100 per cent aluminum body and front suspension. DRIVETRAIN: Preventing the CT6 from becoming corpulent ensures that the three available power teams will provide the driver with plenty of kick. All are connected to eightspeed transmissions. All-wheel-drive is available with only V-6 engines. Base price (incl. destination): $63,800 Type: Four-door sedan Engines: (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (265); 3.6-litre V-6 (335); 3.0-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (400) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: Rear- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 13.0/9.1/11.2 (V6) Base weight (kg): 1,660
STATUS: The latest Grand Sport iteration (named for a limited-production racing Corvette) gets all sorts of performance parts to make it go faster, brake harder, corner more quickly and ride more smoothly. The Grand Sport is available in both coupe and roadster versions, as is the extra spicy Z06 that comes with wider wheels than base ’Vettes and is slathered with air intakes on the body and the carbon-fiber hood, to name just a few mods. DRIVETRAIN: With 650 horses underfoot — 195-200 more than base versions — the ZO6 demands to be driven in a way respects the 650 pound-feet of torque that the driver has to contend with. For regular-strength models a Z51 performance option includes a performance suspension and exhaust system, Brembolabeled brakes, larger wheels and tires and differential and oil coolers. Base price (incl. destination): $56,500 Type: Two-door coupe/roadster Engines (h.p.): 6.2-litre V-8 (455-460); 6.2litre V-8, supercharged (650, ZR1) Transmissions: Seven-speed manual; eightspeed automatic Drivetrain: Rear-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 14.2/9.0/11.9 (base 6.2, MT) Base weight (kg): 1,500

TRAX
MALIBU
STATUS: All new for 2016, unchanged for 2017 — The new Malibu is attractively and intelligently designed, allowing it to compete head to head with its rivals. That’s especially important these days, with the sedan category losing ground to crossovers (tall wagons) at a steady rate. The Malibu’s dimensions provide greater passenger space than its predecessor, particularly behind the front seat. DRIVETRAIN: The revised powertrain lineup places greater emphasis on torque and fuel economy and not just horsepower, which is just fine for a car that’s now significantly lighter. The Hybrid uses components from the Chevrolet Volt to achieve exemplary fuel economy. Chevrolet claims it can run at speeds up to 80 km-h on battery power alone. Base price (incl. destination): $23,500 Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 1.5-litre I-4, turbocharged (160); 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (250); 1.8-litre I-4 plus electric motor (182, Hybrid) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic (1.5); eight-speed automatic (2.0), continuously variable (Hybrid) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.7/7.1/9.1 (2.0); (4.8/5.5/5.1, Hybrid) Weight (kg): 1,400
SONIC
STATUS: Minor styling makeover— The Trax is Chevrolet's small wagon with space for five, available all-wheel-drive and an aversion to the fuel pumps. Front seats are on the cozy side, but there's more shoulder room in back if you limit the rider count to two (there are seat belts for three). With the rear 60:40 bench and front passenger seat folded there's space for plenty of bulky stuff, up to eight feet in length. DRIVETRAIN: The standard engine is a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder that now makes 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque (up from 138/148). It's backed by a sixspeed automatic transmission. Base models come with 10 airbags plus an introductory subscription to GM's OnStar emergency/concierge and direction assist service. Air conditioning, rearview camera, roof rack, deluxe seat covers and 16-inch aluminum wheels are also included. From there the sky’s the limit, including a power sunroof, navigation system, 18inch wheels and an extensive list of active safety features. The available all-wheel-drive system automatically engages when the roads become slippery or when the vehicle accelerates from a stop. Base price (incl. destination): $21,500 Type: Four-door, front- /all-wheel-drive compact wagon Engine (h.p.): 1.4-litre I-4, turbocharged (138) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.2/7.1/8.2 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,360
VOLT
STATUS: Mild makeover for 2017 — Chevrolet’s sub-compact sedan and hatchback wagon are the unsung heroes of Chevrolet’s small-car lineup. Their relatively spacious interiors and cargo areas are a big plus for buyers and their engine choices are no slouches in the horsepower department. For the 2017 model-year the Sonic gets a revised front-end and new standard and optional wheels. The sporty RS trim level gets its own unique grille along with 17-inch wheels with low-profile performance tires, a stiffer suspension and a body that sits about a half-inch lower. DRIVETRAIN: It uses the same turbo 1.4litre four-cylinder that’s optional on other Sonics (a 1.8-litre non-turbo comes standard) but its manual transmission has more aggressive gear ratios. Chevy says the Sonic’s extra-rigid body structure, wide stance and suspension components helps the car deliver a more sporty driving experience. Impressive safety features include a rear-view camera that's standard on upper trims and an available safety package. Base price (incl. destination): $16,100 Type: Four-door sedan; four-door hatchback Engines (h.p.): 1.8-litre I-4 (138); 1.4-litre I4, turbocharged (138) Transmissions: Five-speed manual; sixspeed manual; six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway): 9.7/6.9/8.4 (1.8, MT) Base weight (kg): 1,240
SPARK
STATUS: No significant changes following a 2016 model-year launch —The second-generation Volt arrived with an improved propulsion system, upgraded interior and a lower price tag. And with government rebates in some provinces, the car is clearly a better deal. The hatchback body is sleeker from bumper to bumper. It’s now possible to squeeze three people in the back seat, so long as a junior-sized rider occupies the middle position. The aerodynamic body is aided by grille shutters that prevent air from becoming trapped inside the engine compartment at speed, which causes drag. DRIVETRAIN: The powertrain consists if two new electric motors that generate a combined 111 kilowatts (149 horsepower) and 294 poundfeet of torque. Electric-only range is now 85 kilometres (previously 61 kilometres). When the batteries run out, a101-horsepower 1.5litre gasoline generator engine supplies electricity and extends the range up to 672 miles. Chevrolet states the car's zero-to-60-mph (96 km-h) time is 8.4 seconds, which is a half-second quicker than the 2015 Volt. Base price (incl. destination): $41,200 Type: Four-door hatchback sedan Base engine (h.p.): Electric motor (149) with 1.5-litre I-4 gasoline generator (101) Transmission: Single-speed controller Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 5.5/5/5/5.6 (2.2 l/100 km equivalent in battery mode) Base weight (kg): 1,610

CRUZE
CHEVROLET BOLT
STATUS: GM’s first dedicated electric car since the 1996-’99 EV1 — It has taken a while, but Chevrolet’s pure electric car finally hits the road. The five-seat Chevrolet Bolt EV has a certified 383-kilometre range on a full charge,

Base price (incl. destination): $17,850 (Sedan); $23,000 (Hatch) Types: Four-door sedan; four-door hatchback Engine (h.p.): 1.4-litre I-4, turbocharged (153) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.) STATUS: All new hatchback body style joins the sedan — You have to know the current hatchback sedan craze remains in full swing when the Chevrolet Cruze finally climbs on board. For 2017 the stylish Cruze Hatch (its official name) opens up its rear door and also opens up a world of possibilities for stowing your gear. The Hatch joins the second-generation Cruze sedan that arrived for 2016. DRIVETRAIN: It weighs about 90 kilograms less than the 2015 version and comes with 15 more horsepower from the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Handling the shifting duties is a six-speed manual transmis-

STATUS: Carryover from 2016, but with a new powertrain option — The mid-size pickup was bereft of choices until General Motors revived the Chevrolet Colorado and similar GMC Canyon pickups for 2015 following a three-year absence. For many pickup fans, these trucks have plenty to offer, whether it's the four-door extended-cab with a 62-inch box, or the four-door crew cab that comes with a 50or available 62-inch bed (there are no regularcabs available) DRIVETRAIN: Each style can be had with a gasoline or turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines or a new-for-2017 V-6. The latter puts out a bit more power than the outgoing 3.6, but combined with an equally new eight-speed automatic transmission, it should be slightly more fuel efficient. Meanwhile the turbo-diesel is the go-to model for hauling payloads up to 820 kilo-

the regular-strength “Hemi’ V-8 is potent enough for most folks. And for something tamer still, the 3.6-litre V-6 also gives a good accounting of itself on the road and at the gas pumps. Both V-6 and V-8 300s can be had with all-wheel-drive that uncouples the front axle when it's not needed, reducing drag on the engine. For safety’s sake, buyers can add Chrysler’s SafetyTec Plus package with full-speed forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control with full-stop function, lane-departure warning with lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross path detection and more. Base price (incl. destination): $41,900 Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 3.6-litre V-6 (292/300); 5.7-litre V-8 (370) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: Rear- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 2.4/7.7/10.3 (V-6, FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,860
PACIFICA
STATUS: Completely new, except for the recycled model name — The Pacifica name originated from a wide wagon that Chrysler briefly sold about a decade ago. The Pacifica begins with a new weight-saving platform that’s wrapped in one of the most smartly tailored shapes in minivan-dom. Compared to the outgoing T & C, the Pacifica is about the same size, inside and out. However there’s a 115-kilogram weight reduction due to lighter-weight materials in the basic body structure plus aluminum sus-
STATUS: No changes ahead of redesigned 2018 model — Chevy’s highly successful compact sport utility model will soon be completely made over. In the meantime the current Equinox enters its final season unaltered. Fortunately it still appears fresh from a recent 2016 updating that included a new front-end, grille and projectorbeam headlamps. In back, revised tail lamps and bumper were similarly revised. What didn’t change are the clever touches like the integrated rocker panels in the doors that reduce entry step-up height. (They also help keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle's lower body area.) The interior, likely the Equinox's best asset, received a new center stack that houses a standard seven-inch touch-screen display. There are also dual glove boxes, easy-to-read twin gauges set in large pods and plenty of handy storage bins. DRIVETRAIN: The base 182-horsepower four-cylinder engine is augmented by an optional 301 horsepower V6, which outclasses every other compact tall wagon in the segment. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine. Available safety features include side-blind-zone and rear-cross-traffic alerts. Base price (incl. destination): $29,000 Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.4-litre I-4 (182); 3.6-litre V-6 (301) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.0/7.5/9.4 (2.4, FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,710
pension components and door panels. As before, the modern interior has plenty of space for up to eight people. Dashboard styling and ornamentation are first-rate and the twist-knob shifter makes control-panel access easier. Chrysler’s Stow and Go turns the Pacifica into a movable storage locker). DRIVETRAIN: Also back in updated form is Chrysler’s V-6 that’s connected to a new nine-speed automatic transmission. An allwheel-drive option plus a plug-in Hybrid model are also available. The latter uses a version of the 3.6 plus an electric motor for a net output of 248 horsepower. Base price (incl. destination): $45,900 Type: Four-door minivan Engine (h.p.): 3.6-litre V6 (287, or 248, Hybrid) Transmission: Nine-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /rear-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 12.9/8.4/10.9 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 2,070

SILVERADO
STATUS: Back to work with minor content updates — In the battle for full-size pickup supremacy among domestic- and foreign-based automakers, both the Chevrolet Silverado and its near twin the GMC Sierra fare pretty well as they attempt to close in on the top-dog Ford F-150. Following a major makeover last year the Silverado lineup changes very little. All body styles — regular, extended Double Cab (featuring front-hinged rear doors with outside handles) and four-door Crew Cab — are attached to frames with lots of high-strength steel, extra bracing for stiffness and body mounts that help isolate road noise and vibration. DRIVETRAIN: The entry point is a V-6 produces impressive power for its size, but for major hauling and towing duties one the base or optional V8s is essential. The Silverado's model range varies from work-truck basic to the premium "High Country" model that might appeal to wealthy ranchers and city slickers alike (the term “cowboy Cadillac was never more apt). For 2017 this model adds power-adjustable pedals and a heated steering wheel to the list of standard features. Base price (incl. destination): $31,300 Type: Full-size pickup Engines (h.p.): 4.3-litre V-6 (285); 5.3-litre V-8 (355); 6.2-litre V-8 (420) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; eight-speed automatic (5.3; 6.2) Drivetrain: Rear- /four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 13.4/10.0/11.9 (4.3) Base weight (kg): 2,250

STATUS: Minor changes to option packages and infotainment systems —Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ announcement that it will cease manufacturing the mid-size 200 leaves the 300 as the brand’s sole sedan, and it’s getting a bit long in the tooth. Fortunately, the 300 has been blessed with numerous updates over the years and it has remained a comfortable and competent vehicle as a result. DODGE CHARGER
STATUS: Adjusted model lineup and perormance updates — Dodge’s full-size sedan doesn’t sell in huge quantities, although you’re kely seeing more and more Police Pursuit models on the road. Still, the Charger’s repuation sets a performance tone for the brand as a whole. DRIVETRAIN: Buyers can go as tame or as orrid as they wish and their budgets will allow, starting with the relatively mild V-6 (if you consider up to 300 horsepower “mild” V-6. Move up-range and a selection of “Hemi” V-8s are yours for the picking, ranging from the 370horsepower R/T and new-for-2017 T/A to the 485 horsepower SRT. At the peak is the Hellcat with 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of orque. This is the most powerful factory-built sedan out there and also the fastest at a claimed 204 mph (326 km-h). The large 20nch wheels with 15.4-inch Brembo-brand brake otors means the car goes and stops, doing he zero-to-100-mph (96 km-h)-to-zero test in a supercar-rivaling sub-13-second time. Dodge’s Active Exhaust that lets you cut out he mufflers at will is now standard on all Hemi Chargers. Base price (incl. destination): $35,300 Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 3.6-litre V-6 (292; 300 on SXT Rallye); 5.7-litre V-8 (370); 6.4-litre V-8 (485); 6.2-litre V-8, supercharged (707) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: Rear- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 2.4/7.7/10.3 (3.6) Base weight (kg): 1,800
CHALLENGER
STATUS: Minor content adjustments — Detroit's Big Three automakers proudly flaunt he good old days of tire-smoking performance and the Challenger that leans heavily on a hertage that dates back to 1970 is a prime example. Not only does the coupe’s styling reflect hat era, but the retro-influenced interior does also, especially the "high sill" floor console rem-
iniscent of those found on Challengers of old. DRIVETRAIN: The 3.6-litre V-6 and 5.7-litre "Hemi" V-8 (standard with R/T trims) returned unaltered, as does the 6.4-litre V-8 used to power the Challenger SRT. The outrageous 707-horsepower (and 650 pound-feet of torque) Hellcat also returns at more than twice the price of a base Challenger. Supplies of this model remain tight, but the wait might be worth to obtain most powerful mass-produced muscle car ever made. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard in V-6 Challengers, and optional on all V-8s, which come standard with the six-speed manual. For 2017 all Hemipowered Challengers get an electronically controlled “active exhaust system” that lets you and anyone near you know what’s under the hood. Base price (incl. destination): $33,700 Type: Two-door coupe Engines (h.p.): 3.6-litre V-6 (305); 5.7-litre V8 (375); 6.4-litre V-8 (485); 6.2-litre V-8, supercharged (707) Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic; sixspeed manual Drivetrain: Rear-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway): 12.4/7.8/10.3 (3.6) Base weight (kg): 1,740
JOURNEY
STATUS: Carries over virtually unaltered — The Journey scores a hole-in-one as a practical, efficient and affordable carrier. It has justright sizing going for it, which means it's bigger than the Mitsubishi Outlander but more compact than a Chevrolet Traverse or Ford Explorer. These models and others in the same class are also considerably more expensive than the Journey. In entry-level trim, it provides seating for five people, although there's an available two-place third-row 50:50 split bench. There are also some other clever interior storage options such as a front passenger seat with a flip-forward hinged cushion that's ideal for concealing cameras, purses and other valuables. And all models have two in-floor storage compartments with removable plastic liners behind the front seats that are large enough to hold a dozen beverage cans each, plus ice. There’s also a chilled storage bin inside the glove compartment that can keep a couple of cool beverages at the ready. Base models come with a four-cylinder engine, but the V-6 is preferred by far for its combination of power and fuel efficiency.

FIAT 124 SPIDER
STATUS: New for 2017 — If the 124 Spider looks similar to the MX-5 Miata, it’s because Mazda and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) jointly engineered the two roadsters and both are built at Mazda’s plant in Hiroshima, Japan. But instead of a Mazda engine, the 124 uses the same turbocharged 1.4-litre powerplant originally developed for the Fiat 500 Abarth. All 124s can be speced with Mazda’s six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. The front and rear suspension design is similar to the MX-5’s, but Fiat gave the Spider slightly firmer shocks, springs and uniquely tuned steering. Model availability consists of base Classica, Lusso and Abarth, The latter gets slightly more power plus front and rear Brembo-brand brakes, paddle shifters (automatic transmission), navigation system, nine-speaker Bose audio system plus some active safety features. Base Price (including destination): $32,900 Type: Four-door sub-compact wagon Engine (h.p.): 1.4-litre I 4, turbocharged (160-164, Abarth) Layout: Rear-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.0/6.7/7.9 (MT) Weight (kg): 1,140

A MAN’S BEST FRIEND’S NEW BEST FRIEND.
STATUS: Fewer models and lower (by about $1,000) base prices — Fiat keeps trying to get the 500 to fit with Canadian tastes — and succeeds in certain areas of the country — but more affordable gas prices seem to have stunted its growth, overall. For 2017 the number of available models has been reduced to just three, Pop, Lounge and Abarth, with each available in hatchback and Cabrio (convertible) body styles. The former Easy model, which was introduced for 2016, is gone, as is the 135-horsepower Turbo (which should really be the 500’s base powerplant). That leaves the 101-horsepower base engine and the Abarth’s 160-horse turbo I4. Fiat has also rejigged the 500’s options to allow buyers to select more individual accessories instead of having to purchase specific packages to get what they want. All trim levels can be upgraded with a BeatsAudio-brand sound package, navigation system and a sunroof. Base prices (plus destination): $19,800 (500) Type: Two-door hatchback/convertible Engines (h.p.): 1.4-litre I-4 (101); 1.4-litre I4, turbocharged (160) Transmissions: Five-speed manual; sixspeed automatic Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 7.7/6.1/7.0 (MT) Base weight (kg): 1,100
500X
STATUS: Returns for its sophomore year unaltered — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ two-pronged approach to small hatchback wagons has the 500X and the Jeep division's Renegade sharing platforms and drivetrains. However the 500X's lines are far more understated, as in Euro, than the Jeep’s, which in the long run, give it a far more refined sense of style appropriate for a car with its heritage. All in all, it makes the 500X a very appealing package for those looking for something a bit out of the ordinary. DRIVETRAIN: Of the two available engines, the turbo 1.4-litre is only available with a sixspeed manual transmission. If you’d prefer an automatic, you must also pay extra for the nonturbo 2.4, which gets you a nine-speed unit. That combo is also mandatory when specifying allwheel-drive. The system has a free wheeling (and fuel-saving) rear-axle-disconnect feature when both the front and rear wheels don’t require torque. The AWD also comes with a "Dynamic Selector" knob that allows the driver to pick from Auto (default setting), Sport and Traction+, depending on road and driving con-

FORD FIESTA
STATUS: Minor cosmetic changes ahead of a 2018 model-year redesign —Sub-compact sedans and hatchbacks aren’t exactly the rage these days, as more buyers head up the size scale and into tall wagons (crossovers). Not only are they spending more cash; they’re also missing out on fun-to-drive rides like the Ford Fiesta. For 2017 the only minor adjustments are physical in nature and applied to the front- and rear-end of the sedan and hatchback models. DRIVETRAIN: Base four-cylinder and turbo three-cylinder engines share the same five-speed manual transmission, but there isn't an auto-
matic (automated manual) option for the turbo. At the other end of the performance spectrum, the 197-horsepower Fiesta ST hatch comes with a six-speed manual only. The ST sits at the top of the Fiesta hierarchy with unique seats, body kit and colors to differentiate its hatchback silhouette. Hatchback models have less stowage space than you’d think, due to a split-folding seat that doesn’t fold completely flat. Base price (incl. destination): $17,750 Types: Four-door hatchback; fourdoor sedan Engines: (h.p.): 1.6-litre I-4 (120); 1.0-litre I-3, turbocharged (123); 1.6-

FOCUS
STATUS: Unchanged for 2016 — For decades, Ford offered performance versions of its small cars, but they rarely made it to North America. Recently that changed with the Focus RS. It arrives with a wild body kit, stiff suspension, giant wheels and supersticky tires. The Mustang-sourced turbocharged four-cylinder sends gobs of torque to all four wheels via a sixspeed manual transmission. The AWD system features Normal, Sport, Track and a Drift mode for serious sideways track driving. Meanwhile, the less hot front-wheel-drive Focus ST is aimed at buyers who otherwise might purchase a Volkswagen GTI or Subaru WRX.The ST’s sport suspension, bigger and stickier tires and a variety of electronic systems make it a back-road hero. DRIVETRAIN: The Focus Electric maintains a 143-horsepower motor and lithium-ion battery pack that delivers a claimed range of 120 kilometres. Recharging takes three to four hours from a 240-volt outlet. The remaining more modestly powered Focus sedans and hatchbacks are untouched. Base price (incl. destination): $18,900 Types: Four-door sedan; four-door hatchback Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4 (160); 1.0-litre I-3, turbocharged (123); 2.0litre I-4, turbocharged (252); 107-kilowatt electric motor (143); 2.3-litre I4, turbocharged (350) Transmissions: Five-speed manual; six-speed manual (1.0; ST; RS); six-speed automated manual (opt.); single-speed controller (Electric) Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 7.8/5.7/6.9 (1.0) Base weight (kg): 1,320
FUSION
STATUS: Undated with new trim levels — For years the Fusion has covered the bases in content and in what lies beneath the hood. Externally the Fusion doesn’t appear much different than before; changes to the front end are subtle and passengercompartment updates are equally few. The most obvious change is a rotary shift knob replacing the traditional shift lever. DRIVETRAIN: Also unaltered is the trio of four-cylinder engines plus regular and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. Newly added is a new Lincoln-like Platinum trim along with the equally new Fusion Sport. It makes things interesting with a potent twin-turbocharged V-6 plus standard allwheel-drive (optional on other models). The Sport’s sole transmission is a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. It also receives numerous specific components, notably larger front brakes, firmer springs, thicker roll bar and electronically controlled dampers that constantly adjust themselves, according to road conditions and driver input. A mesh-style grille (also on the Platinum) helps set the Sport apart from other Fusions. Base price (incl. destination): $25,400 Type: Four-door mid-size sedan Engines (h.p.): 2.5-litre I-4 (170); 1.5-litre I-4, turbocharged (179); 2.0litre I-4, turbocharged (237); 2.0-litre I-4 with AC electric motor (188, net); 2.7-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (325, Sport) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; continuously variable (Hybrid) Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 13.5/9.0/11.5 (2.5) Base weight (kg): 1,510

exotic carbon-fiber wheels and runs with a special 5.2-litre V-8, as does the GT350. A sixspeed manual gearbox is common to both Shelbys. Easily the most intriguing Mustang option is a Track Apps package. It includes "linelock" that holds the front brakes so the driver can, in Ford's words, "warm up the tires" (i.e. shred the tread in a cloud of smoke). F SERIES SUPER DUTY
EDGE
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — The Ford Fusion-based Edge has come a long way since its introduction a decade ago. What sets this mid-size wagon apart from the rest is sophisticated styling, a sporty suspension plus a trio of engine choices. Each is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift controls. The optional all-wheel-drive system can direct up to 100 per cent of the torque to either the front or rear axles, as needed. A 1,590-kilogram maximum trailer rating means the Edge can work (and play) hard as well. Passenger space (for five) is augmented with comfy seats, plenty of storage bins and cubbies plus an eight-inch touch-screen for the audio, infotainment and climate controls. The most basic of the Edge's four trim levels has plenty of comfort content. Beyond that, the assortment of available safety and technology gear includes a 180degree front camera that scans for unseen cross-traffic at intersections. In addition, active park assist guides the Edge into, as well as out of, a parallel-parking spot. Base price (incl. destination): $32,900 Type: Four-door tall wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (245): 2.7-litre V-6, turbocharged (325); 3.5-litre V-6 (285) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.5/7.8/9.8 (2.0) Base weight (kg): 1,780
ESCAPE
STATUS: All new for 2017 — The switch to aluminum bodies for Ford’s pickups began with the 2016 F-150 models. Now the hard-working Super Duty F-250, F350 and F-450 rigs receive similar weight paring. The result, according to Ford, is a reduction of up to 160 kilograms, depending on cab configuration and cargo box size. The automaker also claims the sheetmetal, which is now noticeably rounded in front, is more dent and ding resistant than the previous steel-bodied SDs. The equally new steel frame the bodies rest on is lighter and considerably stiffer. That means improved towing and hauling capacities, which is what the SD is mostly about. DRIVETRAIN: The gasoline V-8 returns untouched, but the “Power Stroke” V-8 turbodiesel now produces 925 pound-feet of torque, up from the previous 860 pound-feet. All models now get beefed-up suspensions, axles and steering. For towing, Ford’s Trailer Reverse Guidance system includes a rear camera plus an auxiliary camera that attaches to the rear of trailer provide a visual aid when backing up. For added safety, the SD can be equipped with adaptive cruise control, brake support that assists when trailering down steep grades and blind spot monitoring. Base price (incl. destination): $41,650 Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup Engines (h.p.): 6.2-litre V-8 (430); 6.7-litre V-8, turbo-diesel (440) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Rear- /four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway): n/a Base weight (kg): 2,580

up front, are treated to heated, cooled and available power adjustable seats (standard on V-8 models). DRIVETRAIN: The base G90 3.3 Premium operates with a new twin-turbocharged 365horspower V-6, while the 5.0 Ultimate receives a 420-horsepower V-8 that’s also optional in the G80. Both powerplants direct their torque to all four wheels, via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The complete list of G90 standard features goes on forever, including virtually every active safety feature you can think of. Base price (incl. destination): $80,000 (est.) Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 3.3-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (365); 5.0-litre V-8 (420) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Layout: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 15.8/10.2/13.3 (V-8) Base Weight (kg): 2,180
STATUS: Revised for 2017 — The blue-oval automaker deemed that a nip here and a tuck there was all that was necessary to keep the Escape up with the times. With minor frontand rear-end updates, it remains quite the handsome devil and looks similar to the midsize Edge. DRIVETRAIN: As before, Escape buyers pick from three powerplants, but with some revisions. There are now two new optional turbocharged four-cylinder engines that supplement the base non-turbo I-4. Six-speed automatic transmissions (with paddle shifters for turbo models) handle the cog-swapping duties Base price (incl. destination): $26,900 Type: Four-door tall wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.5-litre I-4 (168); 1.5-litre I4, turbocharged (179); 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (245) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.9/7.6/9.4 (2.5) Base weight (kg): 1,770
F SERIES
G90 STATUS: All-new Raptor takes centre stage — The switch to significantly lighter aluminum body panels for 2016 hasn’t seemed to hurt the popularity of Ford’s class-leading light-duty pickup. Even so, GM’s Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra duo and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Ram 1500 are continually gunning for the F150, as are similar trucks made by Toyota and Nissan. The F-series models use ladder-type frame that's also stronger and actually lighter by a few kilograms. The reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about. For 2017 the second-generation F150 Raptor joins the fleet. DRIVETRAIN: Along with special suspension and body pieces, there’s a special 450 (estimated) twin-turbocharged V-6 that uses a 10-speed automatic transmission to deliver torque to all four-wheels. Meanwhile, Ford continues to provide tamer F-series models with a quartet of turbo and non-turbo engines. Base price (incl. destination): $27,600;
ACADIA
STATUS: New for 2017 — The previous Acadia that was launched for the 2007 model year has been a big success for GMC, with the emphasis on “big”. The second-generation Acadia now hits a sweeter spot with buyers seeking space and comfort in a more manageable size. Although it still comes with three rows of seats, the folding third-row is more kid- than adult-friendly, cargo capacity has shrunk by quite a bit and maximum towing capacity has been reduced to 1,820 kilograms from 2,360. With a smaller base powerplant factored in, the new Acadia also weighs a significant 320 kilograms less. The Acadia’s smaller, lighter platform is derived from the same one used in the 2017 Cadillac XT5 and will also wind up in a reduced version of the similar Chevrolet Traverse. DRIVETRAIN: For 2017 a 2.5-litre four-cylinder becomes the base engine, while an updated V-6 becomes optional. A six-speed automatic transmission is common to both engines. All-wheel-drive is available with either engine. It can be disconnected from the rear axle to save on fuel, or switched to 4x4, Sport, Off Road or Trailer/Tow modes by adjusting the console-mounted selector knob. Base price (incl. destination): $36,800 Type: Four-door mid-size pickup Engines (h.p.): 2.5-litre I-4 (193); 3.6-litre V6 (310) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.0.9.2/10.2 (2.5 FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,800
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — GMC's giant-sized Yukons are specialists at heavy hauling, towing and people transporting in all kinds of road conditions. Although both regular and longer XL configurations can hold up to eight people, the latter’s extra space is completely dedicated to cargo room. Among the Denali's many touches are power fold-andtumble second-row bucket seats, hands-free power liftgate, wireless phone charging and a Bose-brand 10-speaker surround-sound audio system. Base price (incl. destination): $56,800; $59,900 (XL) Type: Four-door full-size sport-utility vehicle Engines (h.p.): 5.3-litre V-8 (355); 6.2-litre V-8 (420) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; eightspeed automatic (Denali) Drivetrain: Rear- /four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 15.1/10.4/13.0 (5.3) Base weight (kg): 2,490
HONDA ACCORD
STATUS: The Hybrid model is back — Most automakers update their models after three or four years on the market. Honda, however, has taken a slightly more dramatic approach with Accord coupe and sedan. The noses, headlights, fog lights and taillights on its two- and four-door Accords that were updated for 2016 appear influenced by the automaker's Acura line. The optional continuously variable transmission now feels almost like a geared automatic since Honda’s engineers recently tweaked it. Meanwhile the V-6 sedan comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, exclusively, but the V-6 coupe lets you pick a sixspeed manual or automatic. DRIVETRAIN: The Accord hybrid that was recently reintroduced uses two electric motors; one acts as a generator, while the other motor assists the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. Combined, the duo’s 232 horsepower (a gain of 16 from the previous Hybrid model) is sent to the front wheels via a single-speed transmission. Base Price (including destination): $26,200 (sedan); $29,200 (coupe); $32,900 (hybrid) Type: Four-door mid-size sedan; two-door coupe Engines (h.p.): 2.4-litre I-4 (185); 3.5-litre V6 (278); 2.0-litre I-4 with electric motor (232) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT); six-speed automatic; single-speed automatic (hybrid) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.4/7.4/9.0 (MT); 4.9/5.1/5.0 (hybrid) Base Weight (kg): 1,450
STATUS: Following a 2016 update, changes are minimal for 2017 — The Sierra received significant visual changes for 2016, which included a new grille, front fascia and standard high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights and LED running lights. On the up-level All Terrain and Denali trims, there are also full LED headlights and taillights. Still, the Sierra and its Chevy Silverado truck buddy are pretty closely matched, despite some minor sheetmetal differences. Even the interiors of the two pickups share the same basic dash, control panel and available touch-screen communications centre that are a masterstroke of efficient legibility. Of course as you scale the trim-level ladder the appointments become more luxurious and the cabin resembles something approaching a high-end limo. DRIVETRAIN: The Sierra’s V-6 and the two available V-8s use aluminum cylinder blocks and direct injection, whereby fuel is force-fed - very precisely -- into the cylinders under high pressure. The larger of the V-8s gets an eightspeed automatic transmission, with the other two each using a six-speed unit. Base price (incl. destination): $33,000 Type: Full-size pickup Engines (h.p.): 4.3-litre V-6 (285); 5.3-litre V-8 (355); 6.2-litre V-8 (420) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic (4.3); eight-speed automatic (5.3, 6.2) Drivetrain: Rear- /four-wheel-drive STATUS: A hatchback body style joins the Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): lineup — Many compact cars compromise 13.4/10.0/11.9 (4.3) style, space and performance in return for a Base weight (kg): 2,250 low price, reduced content and exemplary fuel economy. The 10th-generation Honda Civic sedan and coupe deliver the whole enchilada seemingly without compromise or beating too hard on the list price. Despite being slightly larger in all key areas, the Civic models don’t weigh any more, thanks to lighter materials and components employed in its construction. DRIVETRAIN: Engine choices consist of a non-turbo four-cylinder on lower trim levels, while upper-range models get a turbocharged I-4. The Turbo is also standard in the new Civic hatchback that comes on stream for 2017. Both the non-turbo and turbo powerplants are available with a six-speed manual transmission, or STATUS: Updated for 2017 — The Sierra and optional continuously variable unit (CVT). STATUS: A new name and body for the previous Hyundai Equus — What goes for the Hyundai Genesis, now simply called Genesis, goes for the Equus that has been replaced by the G90 appellation. Both are now part of Hyundai’s freestanding Genesis brand that will eventually expand to include additional up-level models. But where the G80 wears last year’s Genesis sheetmetal, the flagship G90 luxury sedan’s new suit of clothes essentially turns it into a stretched version of the G80. Overall length has been extended by five centimetres while there’s an extra 11.5 centimetres between the front and rear wheels. The result is limolike legroom for rear passengers that, like those

SIERRA STATUS: A carryover car with a new name that’s now part of Hyundai’s new upscale division — I case you haven’t heard, the Genesis sheds his Hyundai surname and morphs into one of two rebadged models sold under the Genesis brand (similar to what Lexus is to Toyota or what Acura is to Honda). From grille to taillights, the G80 is virtually unchanged from 2016 and should continue to appeal to customers who cross-shop similar full-size sedans from Lexus, BMW, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz and the like. As before, Hyundai hopes that loading up the G80 (and Hyundai’s Equus-cumG90) with a surfeit of premium features will compensate for a lack of pedigree. DRIVETRAIN: The base V-6 is rated at 311 horsepower, while a 420-horsepower V-8 is optional. Both powertrains are positioned inside a rigid platform that was necessitated by the installation of standard all-wheel-drive.The system distributes the torque 40:60 front-to-rear in normal driving conditions, but sends up to 90 per cent to the front or 100 per cent to the rear wheels when slippage is detected. However in Sport mode, added rear torque bias can be locked in for improved handling agility. Most of the collision-mitigating active safety gear comes standard on the G80. RIDGELINE
CR-V
STATUS: Redesigned for 2017 — One of North America’s best-selling cars is receiving a major makeover, resulting in more passenger and cargo room and more power from two new engines. The CR-V now uses a version of the same platform first used in the 2016 Honda Civic. As a result there’s extra four centimetres between the front and rear wheels that primarily benefits rear-seat passengers. DRIVETRAIN: The CR-V’s tried and true 2.4litre four-cylinder engine remains, but buyers can now upgrade to a turbocharged 1.5-litre I4 (also from the Civic) that makes an estimated 190 horsepower. Both powerplants will be mated to continuously variable transmissions. Front-wheel-drive is standard while an upgrade to all-wheel drive is a relatively affordable option. Base price (incl. destination): $28,500, (est.) Type: Four-door compact sport-utility vehicle Engine (h.p.): 2.4-litre I-4 (185); 1.5-litre I4, turbocharged (190, est.) Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 8.8/6.9/7.9 (2.4, FWD) Base weight (lb.): 1,540 (est.)
HR-V
STATUS: Redesigned for 2017 — The second-generation five-passenger Honda Ridgeline is all about a comfortable environment, clever convenience touches and a rocksolid reputation. The previous Ridgeline wasn’t necessarily a muscular match for other compact or full-size trucks on the market and it didn’t try to be. Instead, it was more like a sport utility vehicle that shared a basic platform with the Honda Pilot, only with an open box instead of an enclosed cargo space. For 2017 Honda has added refinement, people-pleasing features and a stout 280-horsepower V6 connected to a six-speed automatic transmission that directs torque to all four wheels. The new Ridgeline’s bed is longer and wider so can now load 4x8 sheets of building materials between the wheel wells. A lockable storage area beneath the box’s floor contains the spare tire, provides added space for stowing bulky valuables such as tools and groceries, and can also function as an ice chest. It’s accessible by swinging open the standard “Dual Action” tailgate from the right-hand side, or by lowering it in the traditional manner. The Ridgeline also gets a fold-up rear seat cushion that lets you to load everything from potted plants to giant-screen TVs and bicycles Base price (incl. destination): $38,400 Type: Four-door mid-size pickup Engine (h.p.): 3.5-litre V-6 (280) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 12.8/9.5/11.3) Base weight (kg.): 1,930

IONIQ
TUCSON
STATUS: New for 2017 — The Ionic is uniquely designed to compete with a variety of gas-electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electrically propelled cars. Not all at once, of course, but by allowing buyers select from any one of those three propulsion options in a single, roomy four-door hatchback model. The basic hybrid version uses a 104-horsepower 1.6-litre four-cylinder in combination with a 43-horsepower electric motor for a total system output of 139 horsepower. For those who’d prefer more electrical energy, the Ionic Plug-in model uses the same gas engine, but uses a more robust 60-horsepower electric motor and battery pack. The combination allows the Ionic to run for up to 40 kilometres solely on battery power. Lastly, the Ionic Electric’s 120-horsepower motor and battery duo are designed to provide up to 175 kilometres of range. By using a fast charger, up to 80 per cent of capacity takes just 20 minutes (much, much longer, if you choose to charge using household current). With such a complete range of “green” machines, the Ionic is almost certain to cut into the Toyota Prius’ once unassailable hybrid dominance. Base price (incl. destination): $30,000 (est.) Type: Four-door hatchback Engines (h.p.): 1.6-litre I-4 with electric motor (139, net); 88-kilowatt electric motor (120) Transmissions: Six-speed automated manual; single-speed (Electric) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base MPG (city/highway/combined): n.a. Base weight (kg): 1,320 (est.)
SANTA FE STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — Think of the HR-V as the middle child of Honda's small wagon lineup. In length it's exactly half way between the larger Honda CR-V and the smaller Fit. The vehicle's sloping roofline is more hatchback than wagon, but in terms of cargo volume, the HR-V beats the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage and is significantly ahead on volume compared to the Chevrolet Trax and Jeep Renegade. The HR-V shares the Fit's chassis and is built at the same plant in Mexico. DRIVETRAIN: The HR-V's 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT) with available paddle shifters that control seven pre-set ratios. The extra-cost allwheel-drive stands ready to shift torque to the rear wheels if the fronts begin to slip. Note that models with AWD must have the CVT. Even fully loaded, you can drive a HR-V home for less than 35 grand, which is reason enough to scope one out. Base Price (including destination): $22,500 Type: Four-door compact wagon Engine (h.p.): 1.8-litre I-4 (141) Transmission: Six-speed manual, continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 8.3/6.7/7.6 (CVT, FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,310
PILOT
STATUS: Minor trim-level adjustments — Hyundai made its reputation making small, inexpensive cars such as the Accent, which is a car that leads the way in style, space and performance. Both sedan and hatchback appear and drive larger than they actually are. The sedan excels in passenger roominess, as does the hatchback, although the latter's sweeping roofline, curvaceous liftgate make it the most practical Accent and arguably the best looking of the two. Hyundai also claims the hatchback bests all comers with the second-row seat in the upright position. However the better-packaged Honda Fit still enjoys significant space-race superiority when measuring maximum volume with the rear seat folded flat. The Accent's 1.6-litre engine comes with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. There are noticeably few content differences between trim levels, other than upgraded this or fancier that. In fact, items such as a power sunroof, leather-covered seats, navigation system and active safety equipment are missing from the available-features list. That seems to indicate that Hyundai is keeping the Accent's trim levels (and pricing) as close to the bone as possible. Base price (incl. destination): $15,500 Type: Four-door sedan/hatchback Engine (h.p.): 1.6-litre I-4 (137) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 8.7/6.3/7.6 (MT) Base weight (kg): 1,130
ELANTRA STATUS: New for 2016; unchanged for 2017 — Honda's third-generation Pilot shed the boxy structure and designed a softer look to broaden the Pilot's appeal. Honda also extended the Pilot by about nine centimetres in overall length and by five centimetres between the front and rear wheels. The changes resulted in more legroom plus slightly more space behind the third-row seat. DRIVETRAIN: The Pilot’s V-6 makes 280 horsepower, a gain of 30 from the previous edition. Base models come with a six-speed automatic transmission, while top-end Pilots employ a nine-speed unit. All-wheel-drive is optional with lower trim levels, but standard with Touring and Elite. Unlike most competing systems, the AWD can direct 100 per cent of the rear torque to the outside wheel while turning, without applying braking force to the inside wheel. This "torque vectoring" creates more corning control/stability with reduced understeer). A combination of less weight, more power, and AWD improvements provide the two-ton-plus Pilot with impressive acceleration. Base Price (including destination): $37,400 Type: Full-size tall wagon Base engine (h.p.): 3.5-litre DOHC V-6 (280) Transmissions: Six-/ nine-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 12.4/8.8/10.8 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,860
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — Completely redesigned for 2016, the Tucson's design now mimics that of the larger Santa Fe.The Hyundai gained three inches in overall length while the front and rear wheels are set slightly farther apart. Interior volume with the split-folding rear seat in place was also increased by an impressive 20 percent. The rear seat reclines 37 degrees and the dashboard/control panel is more business-like. DRIVETRAIN: The base SE gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, while Eco, Sport and Limited trims feature a turbocharged 1.6-litre I-4. All-wheel-drive is optional with either engine. The unit has an AWD lock control switch that lets you "hold" the torque split equally between the front and rear wheels for maximum traction on rough terrain. AWD can also direct extra torque to the outside rear wheel when the Tucson is turning, while at the same time applying light braking to the inside rear wheel. This "torque vectoring" makes for more stable cornering. For improved ride comfort and control, Hyundai stiffened the front and rear suspension attachment points, upgraded the engine mounts and bushings and increased the amount of sound insulation. Base Price (including destination): $26,200 Type: Four-door sub-compact wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4 (164); 1.6-litre I4, turbocharged (175) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic (2.0); seven-speed automated manual (1.6) Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.1/7.6/9.0 (2.0) Base weight (kg): 1,640
VELOSTER STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — The Santa Fe tries to be all things to all families by offering both two- and three-row seating capacities. To accomplish this, the automaker makes the shorter-wheelbase five-passenger Santa Fe Sport or the extended-length seven-passenger Santa Fe XL. DRIVETRAIN: The elongated version is heftier than the Sport by a good 180 kilograms, which explains why it's only available with a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6. Conversely, the Sport comes with a base 2.4-litre four-cylinder, or the optional 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder. In all cases the sole transmission is a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls. Hyundai lets you add its latest all-wheeldrive setup with any Santa Fe you select. The system includes Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC) that monitors driving conditions and can instantaneously direct the correct amount of power or braking force to any single wheel. TVCC assists in slippery conditions and provides added precision when negotiating turns. Base price (incl. destination): $30,500 (Sport); $34,100 (XL) Type: Four-door tall wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.4-litre I-4 (190); 2.0-litre I4, turbocharged (264); 3.3-litre DOHC V-6 (290) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.8/8.6/10.0 (2.4, FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,570
SONATA
STATUS: All new for 2017 —Hyundai has also proven that it’s fearless when it comes to reengineering one of its top sellers. The Elantra’s key dimensions have changed little from the previous model, but the sheetmetal is quite different. Additionally, the platform’s redesign has resulted in a stronger, stiffer body structure. It’s also lighter and, along with an allnew rear suspension, is designed to deliver a better driving experience plus added comfort and quietness for passengers. DRIVETRAIN: The new Elantra brings with it a choice of three engines; a 147-horsepower four-cylinder with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, a turbocharged 128horsepower I-4 (exclusive to the gas-sipping Eco model) with a seven-speed automated manual. Meanwhile the Elantra GT hatchback, which will remain unchanged until the 2018 model year, uses a 173-horsepower four-cylinder hooked up to a six-speed manual or automatic). The Elantra sedan might appear more buttoned-down than before, but it’s consistent with the kind of quality image that Hyundai wants to project.
Hybrid plug-in with up to 43 kilometres of electric-only range. Hybrid fuel economy is rated at 5.9 l/100 km city and 5.3 highway (5.6, combined) The 2.4, 2.0 and Hybrid (yes, even the Hybrid) are linked to six-speed automatic transmissions. Base price (incl. destination): $26,550 Type: Mid-size sedan Engines (h.p.): 2.4-litre I-4 (185); 2.0-litre I4, turbocharged (245); 1.6-litre I-4 (178); 2.0litre I-4 with a 38-kilowatt electric motor (193, net) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; sevenspeed automated manual (std. on 1.6) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.4/6.5/8.1 (2.4) Base weight (kg): 1,480
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — Since the Veloster's inception, Hyundai has had a hit on its hands owing to its funky design, comfy-cozy interior and affordability. To the latter point, base Velosters come with a relatively mild 1.6-litre engine, but it’s the Veloster Turbo’s 201-horsepower I-4 that’s the most appropriate engine for Hyundai’s sporty hatchback. Six-speed manual transmissions are standard with both engines, while a six-speed paddle-shift automated manual is optional with base 1.6 and a seven-speed automated manual is a Turboonly option. Called the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), it includes a selectable Active Eco mode that adjusts the computer-regulated engine and transmission mapping to maximize fuel economy. Visually, the Turbo shows off a more aggressive front end with a larger blacked out grille, unique hood, ground-effects body kit, revised rear bumper and a gigantic twin exhaust poking out the back. Buyers can upgrade their Velosters with a Rally Edition (available when ordering the R-Spec option package). Base price (incl. destination): $20,300 Type: Three-door hatchback Engines (h.p.): 1.6-litre I-4 (138, 201, turbocharged) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed dual-clutch automatic (opt. on base); seven-speed automated manual (opt. on Turbo) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 8.8/6.7/7.8 (base 1.6, MT) Base weight (kg): 1,210
INFINITI STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — The current-generation Sonata is entering its third year, but since it was one of the first Hyundai model to feature the automaker’s recently adopted design “language”, the mid-size sedan still looks fresh. Hyundai’s designers have also worked to ensure the cabin is as free from outside road and tire noise as possible. The dashboard and control panel feature an integrated display screen and numerous, but logically positioned, pushbuttons with a minimum of twisty knobs. DRIVETRAIN: The Sonata's base 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and optional turbocharged 2.0-litre I-4 can be substituted with an optional 2.0-litre gas engine combined with an electric motor that’s standard on the Sonata Hybrid and

THE DAILY COURIER, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2016
it was given for 2014 and that match up with the all-new 2017 Q60 coupe’s powertrains. In addition, the gas-electric hybrid returns unaltered with a combined 360-horsepower output. The changes should allow the Q50 to compare more favorably with the BMW 3-Series, Cadillac ATS, Mercedes-Benz C-class and other entrysporty sedans. DRIVETRAIN: The starting-point turbocharged four-cylinder (courtesy of MercedesBenz) is actually 120 horses shy of the previous non-turbo V-6. But move up to the twinturbo V-6 and you have either 300 or 400 horsepower (in the Red Sport model) plus plenty of torque to play with. Each engine plus the hybrid is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission and every model comes with all-wheeldrive. An interesting option on the V-6 Q50 is what Infiniti calls Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS), also referred to as steer-by-wire. It allows drivers to dial in both steering ratio and steering effort by selecting from Standard, Sport, or Sport-Plus modes. STATUS: New for 2017 —It seems like there’s always some new challenger that rises up to challenge the BMW 3-series, including Jaguar’s new XE sedan. Dimensionally, while not a dead ringer for the 3-series, the XE isn’t far off in overall length, width and in distance between the front and rear wheels. That also means it suffers from the same tight-fitting rearseat area. Meanwhile, those in front are treated to first-class accommodations that include wellbolstered seats and an eight- or optional 10.2inch touch-screen that controls climate, audio, communications and navigation functions. DRIVETRAIN: The XE arrives with a base turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine Optional is a supercharged 3.0-litre V6. An eight-speed automatic transmission — which is also employed by BMW and Audi — is standard for both engines. The front and rear body overhangs are practically non-existent (perfect for off-roading) and there's plenty of clearance between the tires and the fenders. The Renegade’s narrow width does place a premium on elbowroom, but a tall roofline gives the interior a somewhat airy feeling. DRIVETRAIN: Base Renegades run with a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission, while a non-turbo 2.4-litre I-4 with a mandatory nine-speed automatic is optional. Frontwheel-drive is standard on all but the top-line 4x4 Trailhawk trim, while Active Drive fourwheel-drive is optional. example of this philosophy than the 2017 Cadenza. Although overall length remains untouched, the distance between the front and rear wheels has increased slightly, which translates into a bit more rear-seat legroom. The grille, or more accurately, grilles, departs from Kia’s signature “tiger nose” design and are now concave. “Intaglio” versions with vertical bars on upper trim levels look like those installed on Maseratis, while the “Diamond Butterfly” grille on base Cadenzas appears similar to other Kia models. The Cadenza’s body is attached to a new platform that Kia says is lighter and about 35 per cent stiffer. DRIVETRAIN: The retuned V-6 engine now ships torque to the front wheels through a more efficient Kia-designed eight-speed automatic transmission, instead of a six-speed unit. The only sticking point with the Cadenza is the lack of all-wheel-drive availability, a vital feature that nearly every competing car offers. If you’re not unduly hooked on established luxury machines, taking a Cadenza for a spin just might surprise you. Base price (incl. destination): $40,000, (est.) FORTE
Q60
STATUS: New for 2017 — Tall wagons (crossovers) appear to be taking over the world, but fortunately there are still a few fun coupes around to make life (and driving) interesting. The latest Q60 is the delayed replacement for the previous generation that took its leave at the end of 2015. The car’s slinky lines are somewhat reminiscent of the Honda Accord Coupe, other than a few extra creases in the bodywork, a subtle hitch in the rear-window pillar and of course the very cool mesh grille with chrome surround. The exterior is matched with an equally sharp-looking cockpit with well-bolstered seats in faux or optional real leather and shiny trim pieces. DRIVETRAIN: The all-turbo/twin-turbo engine lineup starts with the 208-horsepower four-cylinder, then moves more rapidly up the line with an available 300-horsepower V-6. However to satisfy performance addicts, the top-end Red Sport’s version of the V-6 puts out 400 horses. All three are connected to sevenspeed automatic transmissions and all come with all-wheel-drive. Base price (incl. destination): $48,000 Type: Two-door coupe Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (208); 3.0-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (300400); Transmission: Seven-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.2/8.5/9.4 (2.0) Base weight (kg): 1,700
STATUS: Unchanged, save for a revised model lineup — Four years in, the current Cherokee has been around long enough that many people have likely forgotten all about the original version that arrived in the early 1980s when Jeep was part of American Motors. What makes the current Cherokee unique begins with the controversial pinched and pointy-nose grille. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise DRIVETRAIN: Base models get a Fiatdesigned four-cylinder engine, while, while a V-6 is optional. Each is connected to a ninespeed automatic transmission. The three available four-wheel-drive setups include Active Drive I, a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II has a two-speed transfer case designed for off-road use with either the four- or six-cylinder engines. Lastly, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. It’s standard in the “Trail Rated” Cherokee Trailhawk model. Base price (incl. destination): $29,300 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Engines (h.p): 2.4-litre I-4 (184); 3.2-litre V6 (271) Transmission: Nine-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front- /four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.9/7.7/9.5 (2.4 FWD) Weight (kg): 1,640
GRAND CHEROKEE
STATUS: Likely the final year for this offroad icon in its current format — The Wrangler enjoys a hardcore following among dilatants and devil-may-care rock bounders and mud crawlers alike. However seismic-shift changes are expected for 2018 when the Wrangler sheds its sheet metal body for an aluminum skin. Also expected is a four-door Unlimitedbased pickup version. Lastly, there are hints that a four-cylinder engine will replace the existing V-6. Meanwhile the old warhorse (a.k.a. the least expensive convertible you can buy) soldiers on with nary a change. DRIVETRAIN: The four available trim levels use a 285-horsepower six-cylinder engine with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. The Rubicon comes with Off-Road Rock-Trac with extra-low-range gearing, front/rear-locking differentials and 32-inch off-road rubber. For extreme off-roading crawling the extra-tough Rubicon X features special BF Goodrich off-road tires and Trak-Lok anti-spin rear differentials with available electronic rear lockup. The manual-transmission Rubicon X has a crawl ratio of, incredibly, 73:1. It also includes a "power dome" hood and other macho tires and trim that separate it from the rest of the Jeep pack. KIA
JAGUAR
STATUS: Updated for 2017 — The Forte and Forte5 compete with heavyweights including the Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze and Honda Civic. To keep Kia’s compact in the game, the automaker has restyled the car’s front and rear bodywork. DRIVETRAIN: In addition the powertrain lineup now includes two 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines. The base sedan-only version makes 147 horsepower, while the optional I-4 (standard in the Forte5) produces 164. Available on the Forte5 is a turbocharged 1.6-litre I-4). The base sedan 2.0 is the fuel economy champ, while the latter is the obvious choice if you’d prefer some extra sizzle. Meanwhile the turbocharged 201-horsepower engine turns the Forte5 into a real sport wagon. Spending time aboard the Forte should prove comforting for passengers with upgraded seat fabrics and the availability of safety features including forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking and rear cross-traffic alert and blindspot warning. F PACE
STATUS: New for 2017 — One look at Jaguar’s fancy new wagon confirms that it designed the F-Pace to appeal more to the heart than the head. There’s less volume than in the competing Mercedes-Benz GLC, but more than in the Cadillac XT5 or Porsche Macan that also play in the same ballpark. Passenger accommodations are for up to five occupants are equally spacious. A wide floor console that separates the front seats is where the gear selector knob is situated, instead of a traditional shift lever. DRIVETRAIN: Putting the F-Pace through its paces starts with a four-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces 180 horsepower. Optional is a supercharged V-6 that makes either 340 or 380 horsepower depending on the trim level selected. Each engine is fitted with an eightspeed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Base price (incl. destination): $53,000 Type: Four-door wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbo-diesel (180); 3.0-litre V-6, supercharged (340-380) Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 8.9/7.2/8.1 (2.0) Base weight (kg): 1,780

ing direct aim at Toyota in the hybrid segment. In designing the compact hatchback/wagon, the focus was on keeping the weight down to a bare minimum. The tactics employed to accomplish this included an aluminum hood and liftgate, aluminum suspension parts, lighter-weight seat frames and a significantly lighter lithium-ion polymer 12-volt battery. Even the brake pedal is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. DRIVETRAIN: The powertrain’s 103-horsepower four-cylinder engine is mated to a 43horsepower electric motor that together produce 146 horsepower. Unlike traditional (read: Toyota) hybrids, the Niro uses a six-speed twinclutch automatic to transmit power to the front wheels instead of a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Among the numerous Niro options are a range of communications and collision-avoiding alerts and interventions. Base price (incl. destination): $28,000 (est.) OPTIMA
STATUS: Unchanged, save for the mid-2016 return of the hybrid variant — The mid-size sedan was received a recent makeover and shifts into 2017 with its newness still intact. The Optima was joined a few months following the start of the 2016 model year by an all-new hybrid model. Exterior styling, an Optima strong suit, remains a major draw with buyers, as does a range of four-cylinder engine choices consisting of two non-turbo and two turbocharged powerplants. And with four trim levels -- base LX, EX, SX and SXL -- the Optima cuts a wide swath to satisfy a variety of budgets. The new Optima hybrid that uses an everyday six-speed automatic transmission (not the continuously variable kind that many drivers hate to use) is the Optima’s fuel economy champ with a combined city/highway rating of 6.3 l/100 km. Overall, the Optima’s classy looks and a fiveyear/100,000-mile comprehensive warranty and means it’s game-on for Kia in the mid-size sedan class. Base price (incl. destination): $25,400 Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 2.4-litre I-4 (185); 1.6-litre I4, turbocharged (178); 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (245); 2.4-litre I-4 with 47-horsepower electric motor (199, combined) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; sevenspeed automated manual (opt.) SORENTO
STATUS: All-new for 2016; mostly unchanged for 2017 — The Sorento holds its own with a range of seven-passenger models such as the Nissan Rogue, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Dodge Journey. It’s arguably one of the bestlooking tall wagons in its class. DRIVETRAIN: The base powertrain is 2.4litre four-cylinder that makes 185 horsepower An available turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder provides 55 more horsepower, while a velvety smooth 3.3-litre V-6 tops them all with 290 horses. Note that the V-6 is mandatory if you want to outfit your Sorento with the available third-row seat. Regardless of engine choice, the gears are shifted via a six-speed automatic transmission. Most trims can be had with allwheel-drive that splits the torque 95:5 (front:rear) when the roads are flat and dry. However when tire slip is detected - or during hard acceleration - front-to-rear torque split is 50:50. Additionally, depressing a "Lock" button on the control panel holds the split at 50:50 at low speeds for maximum traction. Base Price (including destination): $29,500 Type: Four-door tall wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.4-litre I-4 (185); 2.0-litre I4, turbocharged (240); 3.3-litre V-6 (290) Transmission: Six-speed automaticDrivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.1/8.2/9.8 (2.4) Base weight (kg): 1,640
SOUL
STATUS: A minor refresh and a more powerful engine — The quirky Soul is one of those hard-to-describe cars that owes its popularity to the way it looks as much as how much it can
carry and how much is costs. DRIVETRAIN: It’s the kind of vehicle that’s just begging for some added performance and for 2017 its wish has been granted in the form of a turbocharged 201-horsepower 1.6-litre engine. That’s a 37-horsepower jump from the previous top-dog powerplant. The new turbo operates through a quick shifting seven-speed twin-clutch (automated manual) transmission. The turbo also gets its own front-end design that differs from the revised one on other 2017s. For the time being the base 130- and optional 164-horse I-4 remain available, as does the pure electric Soul EV. It’s equipped with an electric motor that’s officially rated with a range of 150 kilometres before its lithium-ion-polymer batteries require recharging. Souls can be equipped with just about every option in the book, which speaks to the car’s wide range of buyers. Base price (incl. destination): $18,900Type: Four-door compact wagon Engines (h.p.): 1.6-litre I-4 (130); 2.0-litre I4 (164); 1.6-litre I-4, turbocharged (201); 90kilowatt electric motor (109) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic; seven-speed twin-clutch automatic (turbo); single-speed controller (EV) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.9/7.8/9.0 (1.6 MT) Base weight (kg): 1,230
SPORTAGE
STATUS: Redesigned for 2017 — The 2017 Sportage resembles the 2016 model, yet there are plenty of differences, including the more rounded front clip with an enlarged grille larger air intakes and new headlight pods. In back, the liftgate’s larger glass area improves visibility, while a slightly lower load floor makes cargo handling easier. Although the Sportage looks stubbier, but Kia claims it’s actually more aerodynamic and roomier inside. For example, the cargo area behind the split-folding rear seat has been upped by nearly 18 per cent. The platform was also strengthened and lightened and the front and rear suspensions have been updated. As well, the steering has been revised for more precision and driver feedback. DRIVETRAIN: Returning only slightly revised are the base non-turbo and turbocharged fourcylinder engines that have been adjusted for improved fuel economy. DRIVETRAIN: A Ford-designed turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine supplies motivation. It's the same engine that’s used in the Evoque. Land Rover claims a modest 8.2-second zero-100 km-h acceleration time for the 4,200-pound Sport. Keeping the Evoque going in these or other conditions is a turbocharged 240-horsepower 2 four-cylinder engine connected to a ninespeed automatic transmission. On- and offroad traction comes from a full-time all-wheeldrive system with an electronically controlled center differential that varies the torque between the front and rear wheels, depending on where the grip is greatest. An adjustable Adaptive Dynamics option offers either a soft or firm (sporty) ride. The system's shock dampers monitor the suspension "at least 1,000 times per second" to promote maximum vehicle stability with minimal body roll while turning. MKX STATUS: Updated for 2017 — Every year since the third-generation IS's launch, Lexus has made changes to the sedan, although for 2017 they’re mostly cosmetic. They include new taillights and a revised front-end with side air intakes that can best be described as massive. Returning are the sedan’s three trims, starting with the IS 200t equipped with a 241-horsepower four-cylinder. The mid-point IS 300 gets a 255-horsepower V-6, while the IS 350’s 3.5 puts out 306 ponies. The IS 200t is exclusively rear-wheel drive, while the IS 300 and IS 350 are exclusively all-wheel-drive. The system splits the torque evenly between the front and rear wheels in normal driving situations, but can transfer up to 70 per cent to the rear when front slippage is detected. DRIVETRAIN: The IS has Drive Mode Select throttle and transmission programming, with ECO, NORMAL and SPORT S settings for rearwheel-drive models, plus a SNOW mode for AWD-equipped cars. The optional F SPORT package adds a SPORT S+ setting that firms up the suspension for more spirited driving. Base price (incl. destination): $41,550 Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (241); 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (255, IS 300; 306, IS 350) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic (IS 300; IS 350); eight-speed automatic (IS 200t;) Drivetrain: Rear- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.6/7.2/9.0 (2.0) Base Weight (kg): 1,650
NX STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — In the entry-luxury class, size counts for a lot and here the long, wide and roomy ES is at the top of its game, especially for rear-seat passengers. Following a 2016 refresh, the ES looks more than ever like its more luxurious LS relation. The only minor issue is the dashboard, with an overabundance of knobs and buttons handling ventilation, audio and communications tasks. It its defense, the standard seveninch display audio system does clean things up a bit. DRIVETRAIN: The 268-horsepower V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission carry over unchanged, as does the Toyota Camry-based 300h hybrid with its 156-horsepower four-cylinder gas engine that combines with a 141-horsepower electric motor to generate 200 combined horsepower. Both function through a continuously variable transmission. All ES models include a backup camera, perforated "NuLuxe" upholstery, power moonroof, 10-way adjustable power front seats and an eight-speaker auto system. There's also a Drive Mode selector with Normal, Eco and Sport settings for the powertrain and steering. RX
STATUS: Minor adjustments for 2017 — The RX has been a trendsetter since launching for the 1999 model year and the current fourthgeneration model is no different. The RX 350 and 450h hybrid variant were stretched a bit between the front and rear wheels for 2016. As a result passengers are treated to a cabin with additional rear-seat space and a larger stowage area for their stuff. DRIVETRAIN: The RX 350’s V-6 produces 295 horsepower, while an eight-speed automatic transmission directs power to the front and/or rear axles. LINCOLN CONTINENTAL
STATUS: New for 2016, unchanged for 2017 — If you’re a fan of the Ford Edge, you’ll be impressed with what Lincoln has done in revamping that wagon for luxury duty. The body has plenty of curves and creases and a restyled taillight bar extends the full width of the liftgate. Beneath the sheetmetal, Lincoln stiffened the Edge’s chassis, upgraded the suspension and added more sound insulation (including an acoustic windshield and front side glass). The interior comes with leather-covered front seats with four-way adjustable headrests. There’s also no gear shifter, since Lincoln replaced it with push-button controls positioned beside the touch-screen display DRIVETRAIN: Both the base non-turbo V-6 and twin-turbocharged V-6 are connected to six-speed automatic transmissions with Drive and Sport modes. The Sport allows the engine to rev higher between shifts and also lets the driver manually control the downshifts that are matched to engine revs. The standard allwheel-drive system directs 100 per cent of the engine torque to the front tires under normal operating conditions, but can also send up to 100 per cent to the rear if the fronts start to slip. Base Price (incl. destination): $48,300 Type: Four-door luxury wagon Engines (h.p.): 3.7-litre V-6 (300); 2.7-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (330) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 14.4/10.3/12.5 (3.7) Base weight (kg): 1.990
MKZ STATUS: All-wheel-drive now standard in all versions — Lexus has abandoned styling subtlety and now embraces a design language that heads in the opposite direction. A spindle grille that’s common to other Lexus models dominates the NX’s futuristic front end. On the optional F-Sport model, the blacked-out mesh grille is even more distinctive. DRIVETRAIN: The NX 200t uses a turbocharged 235-horsepower engine, while the NX 300h hybrid combines a 154-horsepower I4 with a 141-horsepower electric motor for a combined 194 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive (or "all-weather-drive," in Lexus-speak) in the NX 200t directs torque to just the front wheels when cruising, but can send up to 50 per cent to the rears when necessary. The NX 300h uses an electric motor to power to the rear axle, which is activated once the vehicle accelerates from rest or when the front wheels begin losing grip. Optional is a navigation system, powerfolding rear seat and liftgate and a wireless charging tray for energizing cell phones. The F Sport includes a sport-tuned suspension and summer tires.. The RX 450h hybrid functions with its own 259-horsepower version of the V-6, but combined with up to three motor generators, it makes 308 horsepower. The standard all-wheel-drive system sends 100 per cent of the power to the front wheels under optimal road conditions and directs up to 50 per cent of the torque to the rear wheels when needed. MKC
STATUS: A facelift and new engine option shared with the Continental — If the new Continental’s $60,000 base tariff is too rich for your credit limit, then check out the revised Lincoln MKX and save yourself a whack of money. The MKZ’s new front-end is stunning, and improves on the previous winged grille. It also neatly disguises its Ford Fusion heritage. Since the MKZ’s flowing roofline already looks great from behind, only minimal tinkering was done in that region. The car's massive windshield and rear window glass, including an optional retractable panoramic sunroof, makes claustrophobia doubtful. Inside is an ultrasophisticated leather-covered and woodtrimmed interior plus a floor console. DRIVETRAIN: The base turbocharged fourcylinder engine carries on, but the non-turbo V-6 option has been replaced by a more powerful (by 100 horsepower twin-turbo I-4 (both come with all-wheel-drive). The front-wheeldrive-only Hybrid uses a continuously variable transmission. NAVIGATOR STATUS: Unchanged for 2016: The GS is the ideal Lexus sedan for people with LS tastes, but would rather not extend their credit limits past the six-figure range for a new car. In fact they can easily stay well below that mark, starting with the GS 350. DRIVETRAIN: That all-wheel-drive model comes with a strong-running V-6 that delivers 311 horsepower. It’s connected to an eightspeed automatic transmission that blips the throttle for smoother downshifts (called rev matching). For greater fuel efficiency, the GS 450h hybrid’s V-6 and electric-motor combo puts out a combined 338 horses. The AWDS hybrid's continuously variable transmission can replicate eight speeds in "dynamic" mode. All models can be had in F Sport trim. That includes special 19-inch staggered-width wheels and tires to make room for larger brakes with more aggressive pads. Also included is a stiffer suspension along with a body kit that’s guaranteed to never be ignored. Lastly the highperformance and pricey ($100,000) GS F packs a 467-horsepower V-8 that’s also mated to an eight-speed automatic. Base price (incl. destination): $60,000 Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 3.5-litre V-6 (311); 3.5-litre V-6 plus electric motor (338); 5.0-litre V-8 (467) Layout: All-wheel-drive Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic; continuously variable (GS 450h) Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 12.4/9.0/10.9 (3.5 gasoline) Base Weight (kg): 1,900
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — The RC is notable (and noticeable) for its knife-edge aero styling cues that set it apart from the pack. The cockpit is richly tailored with good-looking faux leather seats (real leather is optional). DRIVETRAIN: The Base RC 300, gest the same V-6 as the RC 350, only with 255 horsepower rather than 307. All-wheel-drive with a six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either powerplant, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission. An F Sport package includes electronically controlled variable sport suspension, high-friction brake pads and 19inch wheels (18-inchers are standard). As well there are heated and ventilated sport front seats, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel and aluminum sport pedals and trim. For all-out performance, the rear-wheel-drive RC F is uses a 467-horsepower V-8 with an eight-speed automatic It also includes special body panels, race-tuned suspension, bigger brakes and a multi-mode program allowing drivers to adjust throttle and shift settings. STATUS: Other than few new features, the smallest Lincoln remains untouched —The compact MKC faces off against the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and other premium compact wagons. Lincoln's design team started with the Ford Escape’s platform and created a unique and handsome shape. However the MKC's standard all-wheel-drive and both standard and extra-cost luxury content ensure there will be little, if any, commonality with the Escape. It's also quieter inside, aided by Active Noise Control that uses hidden microphones and a special control module to create opposing sound waves sent through the car's speakers to cancel out unwanted engine noises. The system can be combined with continuously adjustable shock damping, power-assisted electric steering, variable transmission shift mapping plus traction and stability control to form "Lincoln Drive Control." The result, says Lincoln, is improved ride and handling. DRIVETRAIN: There are base and optional turbocharged four-cylinder engines to pick from, both operating through a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Depending on trim level, optional equipment run the gamut, including a panorama sunroof, navigation system, heated second-row seats and a power-controlled liftgate. Base price (incl. destination): $44,000
STATUS: Two years following a major refit, the “Nav” stands pat — The luxury sport utility vehicle that was one of the first to arrive at the party was being trampled by the competition (read: Cadillac Escalade) prior to a 2015 modelyear redesign. The result was greater grunt from a twin-turbo V-6. A six-speed automatic transmission directs power to the rear, or all four wheels when equipped with Lincoln's Control Trac four-wheel-drive. On the down side, the redesign still doesn’t attract attention the way similar bit luxo-vessels (like the Escalade) do.You can order your Navigator in standard-length, or the Navigator L that extends the wheelbase by 30 centimetres and overall length by 35.5 centimetres. Interior fittings have been modernized and the optional —on the "Reserve Package"— over-the-top wood trim has been replaced an eco-friendly plant-based product used in watercraft. The Reserve Package also adds doublestitched premium leather trim to all three rows of seats, including a second-row bench or dual captain's chairs, plus the dashboard and kingsize console/armrest. MAZDA CX3
STATUS: Carries over unchanged for 2017 — Mazda's junior CX-3 wagon pushes all the right style buttons and looks every centimetre the brand's practical and sporty image builder. The CX-3 is about 25 centimetres shorter, eight centimetres narrower and has 13 centimetres less distance between the front and rear wheels than the CX-5. It's also at least 180 kilograms lighter than the 1,455-kilogram base CX-5.The cabin purposely exudes an MX-5 (Miata) sports-car-like feel that's interrupted only by a pop-up-style touch-screen display. Rear-seat leg and headroom is tight for adult-sized passengers, although the doors are at least wide enough for easy entry and exit. For storage, the CX-3 is about as spacious as most of its peers, whether the split-fold back seat is upright or flattened. DRIVETRAIN: A spunky and thrifty four-cylinder “Skyactiv” engine that makes plenty of torque is mated to a six-speed automatic (no manual gearboxes here). The available ondemand all-wheel-drive system is designed to "predict" front-wheel slippage and divert power to the rear wheels. Note that due to the space needed for the rear differential, AWD models lose some of their stowage capacity. For the chassis and suspension, the automaker's engineers have infused the CX-5 with fun-to-drive sporting behavior, combined with highly efficient engines and transmissions. DRIVETRAIN: The base 155-horsepower four-cylinder does a decent job, while the more potent 184 horsepower engine is really the better choice. STATUS: New for 2016; unchanged for 2017 — The Clubman is positioned atop a revised (as in smaller) lineup that in the past two seasons has dropped the two-seat Coupe and Roadster along with the two-door Paceman (an all-new Countryman is on the way). Compared to the basic Mini Cooper, the Clubman is nearly 28 centimetres longer, 7.6 centimetres wider and has a 10-centimetere advantage between the front and rear wheels. The wagon’s four fullsize doors are way more practical than the single rear half-door found on the original model. For rear stowage access, the Clubman retains its signature side-hinged "church doors" in place of a more common liftgate. DRIVETRAIN: The base Clubman uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, while the S version receives a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder. Both powerplants are connected to six-speed manual transmissions, or optional automatics (six speeds for the 1.5 and eight for the 2.0).The folks at Mini are quoting a zero-to-60-mph (96 km) time of 8.9 seconds for the 1.5, with either the manual or automatic trans, and 6.9 seconds for the 2.0 with the automatic (both engines burn premium fuel). MITSUBISHI G4
STATUS: All-new sedan model; restyled hatchback — The Mirage G4 (Global 4-Door) gives buyers with limited funds, or those who have more important things to spend their money on, a clear choice in low-priced wheels. There’s nearly four extra inches between the front and rear wheels than the Mirage hatchback. The trunk extends overall length by 50 centimetres, making the G4 similar in size to the Ford Fiesta sedan. The G4 receives the same dashboard and control panel as the Mirage hatchback; however, the upgraded gauges and touch-screen display are first-rate. DRIVETRAIN: The standard sedan and hatchback three-cylinder engine makes 78 horsepower, which isn’t much, but a low curb weight doesn’t unduly tax the engine, unless the car is laden with people and luggage. In that case, stick to the right lane and enjoy the scenery. Transmission choices consist of a five-speed manual or available continuously variable (CVT) unit. WHAT’S UP, AUTO DOC? When test driving any new or used vehicle with the intent of purchasing, it’s common to do it during the daytime when you can check for rust, interior stains, general condition and tire wear, etc. And then you’re done, right? Not so fast. Arrange a second test drive after dark so you can more plainly see the vehicle’s nighttime characteristics, from headlight intensity (are all the lights working?) and interior illumination, to more subtle factors such as excessive reflection of gauge lighting onto the windshield.

For power, the 365kilogram C-1 uses an eight-kilowatt lithium-ion battery pack that can propel it to 60 mph (96 km-h) in less than six seconds and reach a top speed of more than 160 km-h. A 320-kilometre operating range at a 100-km-h cruising speed is also expected, with a four- to six-hour
TOP GEAR Quick Spiff vacuum, US $70, Zendex Tool Corporation, www.zendextool.com: This vacuum attaches to the hose of your three-horsepower (or greater) air compressor and provides up to 100 psi of suction. The Quick Spiff features a pistol-grip handle for easy operation and comes with a 40-centimetre flex hose, 7.5-centimetre dust brush and 23-centimetre crevice attachment for attacking your vehicle’s hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. Also included is a heavyduty dust bag with a protective rear deflector to reduce ripping or tearing. Movie-vehicle posters; about US $25-$30; www.etsy.com/shop/CarsAndFilms: The poster car collection from Cars And Films contains many movie cars, such as James Bond’s Aston Martin, the Cadillac “crash wagon” from “Ghostbusters” and the “Back To The Future” Delorean. But there are some lesser-known vehicles in the collection including Mr. Bean’s Mini, the VW Microbus from “Little Miss Sunshine”, the Checker cab from “Taxi Driver” and the recreational vehicle featured in the TV series “Breaking Bad.”
WHO AM I?
To guess his secret identity, read the following clues! 1) He was a British air-force flyer, racecar driver, then a car designer. His company was established in 1945. 2) Once of his most famous works was a two-seater with 100 horsepower that could do 100 mph (160 km-h). 3) Changing crash standards in the 1960s spelled doom for the little car, which sold 72,000 units. 4) Before his death in 1988, he was honoured by the Queen of England and inducted into many halls of fame.

Passion in furniture You might not be able to put a ‘57 Corvette, Shelby Cobra, ‘51 Mercury, ‘57 Chevrolet or Dodge Viper in your garage, but you can obtain a sofa-sized version of your favourite classic at a more affordable price. CorbinPacific Inc. produces a line of automotivethemed loveseats that are made to resemble the rear ends of these and other famous automobiles (plus lounger chairs based on famous motorcycles). The pieces are available in a wide assortment of PPG-brand colors and all feature foam-padded, leather-covered seats (also available in a variety of shades). As an added touch, each chair also comes with faux exhaust pipes and taillights (that actually light up) as well as lighting for the underside of the seat itself.
Prices start at about US $3,400 in primer only, or US $4,800 painted in the colour of your choice (www.corbin.com/furniture).
Jewelry for gear-heads A ring or necklace with moving parts might seem a bit unusual, but they’re just the sort of accessories that any mechanically inclined car buff would enjoy wearing. New York City creator Glen Liberman teamed up with “kinetic designer” Ben Hopson in developing the Gear Ring and Gear Necklace. Both are fascinating pieces of stainless-steel jewelry complete with precision-made miniature gears that actually turn in unison (sounds ideal for people who want something handy to fiddle with), The Gear Ring is available in 10 standard sizes (a sizing chart can be downloaded from the company’s Web site) and can be shipped worldwide for US $165 (The Gear Necklace sells for $185.) Check

The need for speed The Goodwood Festival of Speed is staged at the Earl of March’s 4,800-hectare estate in Sussex, England. Each year you can watch classic racing cars from the early 20th century right up to the present day charge up the 1.6-killometre-long hill-climb course, often piloted by the drivers who made the cars famous. You’ll also have unfettered access to the pits where you can rub shoulders with some of the greats and get up close and personal with some of the most fascinating racing machinery ever assembled. An aviation exhibition and air show is also part of the Goodwood experience. A four-day grandstand pass for the 2015 event (June 25-28) sells for about US $415 and is available at https://grrc.goodwood.com/section/festivalof-speed.
WHO AM I?
1) He created one of the most significant vehicles in automobile history, the “people’s car.” 2) Before this, the first vehicle to bear his name was a battery-powered twoseat machine that was first shown at the 1900 Paris Exposition. 3) World War II halted plans for mass production of his “people’s car,” a.k.a. the Beetle. 4) During the 1950s, his son planned to build the first sports car to bear the family name. The model was the 356.
STILL STUMPED? His name is Ferdinand Porsche, and although his company had humble beginnings, today’s Porsches are some of the finest crafted cars in the world.

THE DAILY COURIER, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2016
ARMADA
Base Price (incl. destination): $32,500 Type: Four-door, five-passenger wagon Engine (h.p.): 3.5-litre V-6 (260) Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.0/8.2/9.8 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,820
PATHFINDER
STATUS: Redesigned for 2017: Despite what you might think, there’s still demand for big, boxy, body-on-frame sport utility vehicles. These extra-roomy mega-transports carry everyone in three of their rows in leg-stretching comfort. Sure they’re a bit thirsty, but with fuel prices well off their previous highs, topping the tank hasn’t been this painless in some time. The new Armada sits on a frame that’s claimed to be 20 per cent stiffer than the previous model. It’s also just slightly shorter, but apparently that won’t affect the big rig’s ability to carry up to eight passengers in an environment that offers “library-like interior noise levels”.From a design perspective, the Armada has never looked better, with tautly drawn lines, plenty of front and side glass and surprisingly only the bare minimum of front and rear overhang. DRIVETRAIN: The powertrain is no slouch either, considering the brawny V-8 puts out a respectable 390 horsepower that’s transmitted to all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic. It also helps tow up to 3,860 kilograms of trailer weight. Three available content-rich trims give assurance that, within reason, all your comfort and safety needs can be fully met. Base price (incl. destination): $65,300 Type: Four-door full-size sport utility vehicle Engine (h.p.): 5.6-liter V-8 (390) Transmission: Seven-speed automatic Drivetrain: Four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 17.5/12.9/15.3 Base weight (kg): 2,540
MAXIMA
TITAN STATUS: Minor engine and body updates — The Pathfinder has proven itself a popular choice among buyers needing enough seats for themselves and their offspring. When not loaded up with passengers, the Pathfinder has plenty of space for camping gear, sports equipment or binge-buying Costco runs. DRIVETRAIN: For 2017 Nissan installed a new nose and significantly updated the standard 3.5-litre V-6 that’s connected to a continuously variable transmission. It’s now rated at 284 horsepower, a gain of 24 from the previous 260 ponies. In addition, the Pathfinder’s suspension was revised for a firmer ride. Unchanged is the All-Mode 4x4-i option. With it, you can select either two- or four-wheel-drive or engage the "Auto" setting and let the system make the call, based on which tire/tires has/have traction. The second-row split-folding seat comes with plenty of fore-and-aft travel and can be tipped forward to access the third row even if a child's booster seat has been attached (the available split-folding third row seat also reclines). Base Pathfinders arrive well appointed, but among the options are a 360degree "Around View" camera panorama moonroof, navigation system and a rear entertainment package with dual seven-inch screens. Base price (incl. destination): $34,300 Type: Full-size tall wagon Engine (h.p.): 3.5-litre V-6 (284) Transmission: Continuously variable Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.9/8.6/10.4 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,940
ROGUE STATUS: Unchanged, save for revised option packages — The eighth-generation "Max" covers a broad spectrum, from well-equipped luxury mount, to agile sport sedan capable of snaking around curves and tackling straightaways at a reasonably rapid pace. Visually, the car displays a level of aggressiveness that makes most other automakers' luxury sedans appear staid by comparison. The flashy chrome grille, curvaceous body panels and sweeping rear end signal that this Nissan loves flaunting its stuff. Underpinning the attractive body is the next-generation Altima-based architecture that's lighter as well as 25 per cent more rigid. Inside, the controls are straightforward, the "Zero Gravity" front chairs are supportive and the pushbutton starter has migrated to the console right next to the shifter. DRIVETRAIN: The Maxima's V-6 sends 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with seven built-in steps and "Sport" and "Normal" operating modes. Of the five available trims, the top-end Platinum comes with a drowsy-driver alert that warns if you're nodding off behind the wheel. For enthusiasts, the sporty SR deletes the moon roof to help lower the car's centre of gravity and maximize structural integrity. Base Price (including destination): $36,150 Type: Four-door full-size sedan Engine (h.p.): 3.5-litre V-6 (280) Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.9/7.8/9.5 Base weight (kg): 1,610
MURANO
date the extra power), stiffer springs, specially tuned front and rear shocks, bigger brakes and an SR-Turbo-specific steering rack. There’s also added standard equipment such as a power-sliding moonroof, sport bucket seats and unique 17-inch wheels. Meanwhile the regular-strength Sentra carries on with five different trim levels plus a wide assortment of luxury and advanced safety options. Base price (incl. destination): $17,500 Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (h.p.): 1.8-litre I-4 (130); 1.6litre I-4, turbocharged (188) Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; CVT (opt.) Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 8.9/6.6/7.9 (MT) Base weight (kg): 1,290
STATUS: An additional Titan model joins the turbo-diesel XD — It took a while, but Nissan finally came out with a second-generation Tennessee-built full-size Titan XD pickup for 2016. Now the line is being extended with a second version of the Titan that arrives for 2017. DRIVETRAIN: However in place of the XD’s Cummins-built turbo-diesel engine the new half-ton model will run with a 5.6-litre gasoline V8 rated at 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. That compares with the 5.0 turbo-diesel V-8’s 310 horsepower and 555 pound of torque. The half-ton gets a different chassis that’s about a 15 centimetres shorter in distance between the front and rear wheels. The truck also sits 3.8 centimetres lower to the ground. Initially only crew cab body styles will be available in four-wheel-drive. Later in the model year Titan buyers will also be able to select both regular and extended-cab versions. The widening Titan range suggests that this time around Nissan is serious about grabbing a bigger share of the pickup business away from Ford, General Motors and Ram (Fiat Chrysler). Base price (incl. destination): $46,450; $49,950 XD Type: Four-door full-size pickup Engines (h.p.): 5.0-litre V-8, turbo-diesel (310), 5.6-litre V-8 (390) Transmission: Six-speed automatic (5.0); seven-speed automatic (5.6) Drivetrain: Four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 15.2/11.1/14.3 (5.6) Base weight (kg): 2,110
PORSCHE 718 BOXSTER STATUS: Restyled body; all-new Hybrid model — The Nissan Rogue is one of the top contenders in the compact wagon segment and will likely gain strength with the addition of a gasoline-electric model. DRIVETRAIN: The Hybrid arrives with a 2.0litre four-cylinder engine working in tandem with a 30-kilowatt electric motor and supporting lithium-ion battery pack to produce a combined 176 horsepower. That’s six horses more than the gas-only Rogue makes. Both models employ a continuously variable transmission (including a Sport mode for snappier performance), are available in front- or optional allwheel-drive and in five- or available seven-passenger variants. The occasional-use third row is a tight squeeze for adults, but kids should find it comfy enough. Physically, the Hybrid benefits from the same makeover that regular Rogues receive, including new and front- and rear-end redesign, a revised interior and more available active safety features. It also benefits from an improved fuel economy rating. The Rogue now matches the Toyota RAV4 with a hybrid option in the compact wagon class. Base price (incl. destination): $26,750 Type: Four-door compact wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.5-litre I-4 (170); 2.0-litre I4 with 30-kw electric motor (176, combined) Transmission: Continuously variable Drivetrain: Front engine, front- /all-wheeldrive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.1/7.1/8.2 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,540
STATUS: Redesigned for 2017 — The Boxster’s modified name pays homage to the Porsche 718 RSK that successfully competed numerous 1950s endurance races. So, the 718 Boxster (the mid-engine Cayman coupe relation also gets the 718 designation) represents a celebration of past glory, while wrapped in an updated body. The passenger compartment has also undergone minor tweaking, including new gauges and a touch-screen display for the audio, communications and optional voice-activated navigation system. DRIVETRAIN: For 2017, Porsche has replaced the six-cylinder powerplants with turbocharged four-cylinder units. Base versions make 300 horsepower, while the 718 S gives you 350 horsepower to play with. Choose between a six-speed manual transmission, and optional seven-speed automated manual (PDK). Porsche claims that the Boxster will hit the 100 km-h mark in 5.1 seconds (4.9 with the PDK), while the S does it in 4.6 and 4.4 seconds, respectively. The numbers represent improvements over the previous times, but with significant increases in mid-range torque, that power will be more on-demand.Beside the PDK option, you can add a sport exhaust, faderesistant ceramic brakes, genuine wood trim and sportier seats covered in upgraded leather. Base price (incl. destination): $62,700 ($79,200, Boxster S) Type: Two-door roadster Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre H-4 (300); 2.5-litre H4 (350, S) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sevenspeed automated manual Drivetrain: Mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.0/8.3/9.8 (2.0, MT) Base Weight (kg): 1,335 STATUS: Hot new Sentra SR Turbo model — The compact Sentra looks closely similar to the mid-size Altima, so much so that from a distance one could easily be confused for the other. However it’s doubtful that the performance-infused SR Turbo model will be confused for anything else once it hits the streets. DRIVETRAIN: The SR’s key component is a torquey little 188-horsepower four-cylinder engine that was originally installed in the Nissan Juke. That’s 58 more ponies than the non-turbo Sentra’s 130-horsepower I-4. The SR can be ordered with a six-speed manual STATUS: Redesigned for 2017 — The same transmission, or an available continuously vari- changes that have been made to the Porsche able unit (CVT). Other exclusive items include Boxster — including the 718 appellation — have a strengthened body structure (to accommo- also been made to its hardtop stable mate. That
SENTRA STATUS: No changes, at least for now — rumors persist that an updated Murano is in the works — possibly by mid-2017 as a 2018 model. For now the current version stands pat, which really isn’t so bad. This is a car that appeals primarily to buyer’s hearts and not their heads. The crisply creased sheetmetal that extends along the door panels is interrupted by a fin-like hitch that seemingly rises into the rear-most side glass. The cabin is equally impressive, with a low-level instrument panel and enlarged the windshield that enhances the forward view. DRIVETRAIN: The Murano’s sole powerplant is a 260 horsepower V-6. That output level is modest in this age of advanced direct-injection and turbocharged engines found in competing brands, but it's adequate in a wagon that weighs less only about 1,800 kilograms. Power is delivered to the front and/or rear wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with built-in "steps" that sort of mimic a multi-gear automatic transmission. There are no steeringcolumn-mounted paddle shifters, but the console shifter can be used to manually control the faux ratios.
718 CAYMAN
means there are no more six-cylinder engines nestled behind the seats. DRIVETRAIN: Instead, there are two new four-cylinder units that are identical in output to those installed in the Boxster (previous Cayman powerplants produced slightly more horsepower). The base Cayman 2.0-litre produces 300 horsepower, a gain of 25 from the previous 2.7-liter H6. Op for the Cayman S and the larger 2.5-liter H-4 pops for 350 horses, which is also a gain of 25 from 2016’s 3.4-litre six-cylinder. With either engine you can specify a six-speed manual or automated manual transmission (known as a PDK).The added output and lighter weight for each model translates into improved fuel economy plus some impressive zero-to-60mph times — 4.7 seconds for the Cayman and 4.2 seconds for the S (both times using the PDK transmission). Porsche also reengineered the suspension and steering systems to improve both the Cayman’s and the Boxster’s road and racetrack agilities. Base price (incl. destination): $62,700 ($76,800 Cayman S) Type: Two-door hardtop Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre H-4 (300); 2.5-litre H-4 (350, S) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sevenspeed automated manual Drivetrain: Mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.0/8.3/9.8 (2.0, MT) Base Weight (kg): 1,335
MACAN
STATUS: New trim levels for 2017 — The Macan is more than a smaller-sized Cayenne; the wagon’s architecture originates from the Audi Q5 (Porsche and Audi are part of Volkswagen), However its mostly aluminum body is influenced by the Cayenne, from the shape of the front end to the slant of the lifgate. Interior styling is as trim as any model in Porsche's lineup. DRIVETRAIN: For 2017 a new base Macan comes with a turbocharged I-4 with 252 horsepower. Additionally, Porsche has introduced the Macan GTS to the lineup. It features a twinturbo V-6 with an output between the 340horsepower S and the 400-horsepower Macan Turbo (an odd name considering all Macan powerplants are turbocharged). Porsche says the high-performance Turbo takes as little as 4.6 seconds to reach 100 km from a standingstart. Every Macan comes with a seven-speed automated manual transmission (PDK) that makes ultra-quick up-shifts and extra-smooth rev-matched downshifts. The standard allwheel-drive’s "Traction Management" system can direct up to 100 per cent of the engine's torque to the front or rear wheels, or from side to side, as necessary. Base price (incl. destination): $53,900 Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (252); 3.0-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (340360); 3.6-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (400) Transmission: Seven-speed automated manual Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.6/9.3/10.6 (2.0) Base weight (kg): 1,770
PANAMERA
STATUS: Redesigned for 2017 — In its first significant adjustment since its 2010 modelyear launch, the Panamera still looks much like the original. However due to a new platform the body has been slightly lengthened and widened. As well, both front- and rear-ends have been proportionally reshaped to a point where calling the car “gorgeous” would not be inaccurate. To go a step further, some of Porsche’s 911 sports car’s DNA appears to have seeped into the Panamera. The cabin has been completely reworked, with a Cinemascope-sized touch-screen display handling the infotainment, communications and climate-control chores. DRIVETRAIN: The 2017 edition starts out in two configurations. The base 4S model gets a new 440-horsepower 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V-6, while a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 in the Panamera Turbo puts out 550 horsepower. Within a year or two the lineup will likely grow to include a plug-in hybrid with a 48-kilometre cruising range in electric mode and possibly an all-electric derivative. Both gas engines are coupled to eight-speed automated-manual (dual-clutch) transmissions designed to deliver extra-quick shifts and a corresponding performance boost when pushing the envelope on the road. All-wheel-drive is a standard item with either powertrain. Base prices (incl. destination): $115,500 (4S); $168,900 (Turbo) Type: Four-door luxury hatchback sedan Engines (h.p.); 2.9-litre V-6, twin-turbocharged (440); 4.0-litre V-8, twin-turbocharged (550) Transmission: Eight-speed automated manual with paddle-shift controls Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): n.a. THE DAILY COURIER, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2016
RAM RAM
STATUS: Minor adjustments, but otherwise unchanged — Along with the Jeep brand, the Ram-series pickups have been the brightest stars in Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ universe. And their combination of awesome power and exceptional fuel efficiency is enough to give the competition fits. DRIVETRAIN: V-6 models take care of lightduty chores, while the big-boss “Hemi” V-8 takes on the tougher towing and hauling. But the show-stealer of the bunch is the turbodiesel V-6. Its 420 pound-feet of torque allow it to tow up to 4,840 kilograms, versus 4,180 for the V-8. It’s also rated at a combined city/highway 10.6 l/100 km. As with others in its class, Ram content ranges from the bare-bones basic Tradesman to the fully kitted out Laramie Longhorn and Limited rigs. For serious off-trail pursuits, the Rebel has a can't-miss RAM badge across an unusual grille and similar tailgate treatment. It also has lots of black powder-coated bits, plus skid plates, tow hooks and unique wheels. Ram buyers looking to add the four-wheel-drive option can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Base price (incl. destination): $32,900 Type: Two- /four-door pickup Engines (h.p.): 3.6-litre V-6 (305); 3.0-litre V-6, turbo-diesel (240); 5.7-litre V-8 (395) Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic (3.6, 3.0, opt. on 5.7); six-speed automatic (5.7) Drivetrain: Rear- /four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 13.9/9.5/11.9 (3.6, 4x2) Base weight (kg): 2,080
RAM HD
STATUS: Mostly carryover with updates for some models — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) must feel confident in its heavy-duty strategy, since there have been only few changes to the lineup. What’s bottom-line important is hauling and towing capability and here the HD’s powertrains really shine. DRIVETRAIN: The base unit is a 383-horsepower 5.7-litre V-8 (a.k.a. Hemi), while the 6.4litre version steps up with 410 ponies. But the top HD performer is the six-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel in three grades. The tamest is rated at 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, while the intermediate delivers 370/800. For maximum grunt, the 385-horse unit lays down 900 pound-feet. The Cummins is matched to a six-speed manual transmission (the only shift-it-yourself in its class), or a sixspeed automatic. The Hemis perform with the six-speed auto box only. For maximum towing, a coil-sprung rear suspension with air bladders is available for 2500 models, while the 3500 uses optional air springs integrated into the existing leaf-sprung suspension. The available four-wheel-drive’s disconnect feature disengages the forward driveshaft from the transfer case when not needed, thus slightly increasing fuel economy. Base price (incl. destination): $45,700 Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup Engines (h.p.): 5.7-litre V-8 (383): 6.4-litre V-8 (410); 6.7-litre I-6, turbo-diesel (350, 370, 385) Transmissions: Six-speed manual (std. with turbo-diesel); six-speed automatic (opt. on 6.7, std. with 5.7, 6.4) Drivetrain: Rear- /four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): n/a Base weight (kg): 2,400

missions (there’s no output change for BRZs with the optional six-speed automatic). To aid turning and cornering capabilities, the 2.0 is positioned closer to the middle of the vehicle and sits low to the ground due to its horizontally opposed (the pistons lie flat instead of moving up and down) design The latter features paddle shifters, rev-matching downshifts plus a "sport" mode that, by activating a switch on the floor console, delivers quicker shifts. In the flesh, the BRZ looks flat-out terrific with its properly planted stance, bulging fenders and generously sized windshield. In back, the twin exhaust pipes encased in a blacked-out diffuser are a neat touch. Base price (incl. destination): $29,650 Type: Two-door coupe Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre H-4 (200-205) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.) Drivetrain: Rear-wheel-drive Base L/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.9/7.9/9.6 (MT) Base weight (kg): 1,260
CROSSTREK
LEGACY
STATUS: Hybrid model has been canceled for 2017 — The Subaru Impreza-based Crosstrek enjoys a reputation as a rugged performer over mud, snow, and rough roads. The wagon has 8.7 inches of rock-hopping ground clearance plus unique, bumpers, roof rails, protective side cladding and rear spoiler. The tougher look is enhanced with darker window tinting and a set of 17-inch all-season tires mounted to custom-look wheels. DRIVETRAIN: Powering all four wheels is a 148-horsepower four-cylinder engine that's shared with the Impreza. A five-speed manual transmission comes with Incline Start Assist to prevent rolling backward when shifting your right foot from the brake to the gas pedal while stopped on a hill. Optional is a continuously variable unit (CVT) with paddle shifters that operate six preset ratios. Subaru’s Active Torque Split AWD setup maintains a 60:40 division, front:rear, but automatically directs up to 100 percent of the torque to either set of wheels when necessary. The Crosstrek Hybrid model that lasted for only three seasons has been permanently put out to pasture. Base price (incl. destination): $26,650 Type: Four-door sedan/wagon Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre H4 (148) Transmissions: Five-speed manual, continuously variable (opt.) Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.2/7.7/9.1 (MT) Base weight (kg): 1,410
FORESTER
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — The Legacy combines the comfort of a roomy fourdoor with the ability of a mountain goat, which is something that very few — if any — of its mid-size competitors can come close to claiming. They also can’t claim to offer all-wheeldrive as standard equipment, an item that doesn’t appear to add very much (if anything) to the Legacy’s attractive purchase price or cause undo harm to its fuel consumption numbers. It’s a feature that makes all Subarus (except the rear-wheel-drive BRZ particularly popular in snowbound parts of the country. DRIVETRAIN: The AWD unit includes Torque Vectoring, a system that applies light braking force to the inside front wheel while turning to enhance steering control. Another Legacy enhancement is the availability of Subaru’s EyeSight grouping of active safety aids that include blind-spot detection, crosstraffic alert and active braking that can bring the car to a complete stop, if necessary, to avoid hitting the car in front. Lastly, the Legacy and its Outback wagon counterpart still offer a manual transmission (on four-cylinder models) as well as a CVT option). Base price (incl. destination): $25,150 Type: Mid-size sedan Engines (h.p.): 2.5-litre H-4 (175); 3.6-litre H-6 (256) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.0/6.5/7.9 (2.5, CVT) Base weight (kg): 1,580
OUTBACK STATUS: Minor updates for 2017 — Subaru's best-selling model receives praise for its tough-when-it-needs-to-be attitude, passenger comfort and reliability. On good roads and bad, the standard all-wheel-drive system operates virtually unnoticed. But when required, which is frequently in snow-belt regions, the Forester’s mountain-goat capabilities make it a popular choice. There’s sufficient distance between the front and rear wheels for plenty of legroom, while the tall roofline and a low-rise load floor make for generous storage space with the split-folding rear seat folded flat. DRIVETRAIN: The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine which is now two-mpg more efficient in city driving, can be upgraded to a turbocharged 2.0-litre H-4 on the top-end Forester, but comes only with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that’s optional with the nonturbo engine (a six-speed manual is standard). For 2017 The Forester receives modest frontend styling revisions, added sound insulation and improved door seals for a quieter cabin and improved steering and suspension systems. Subaru’s Eyesight driver-assistance option now includes lane-keeping assist. Base price (incl. destination): $27,700 Type: Four-door wagon Engines (h.p.): 2.5-litre H-4 (170); 2.0-litre H-4, turbocharged (250) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km(city/highway): 10.6/8.4/9.6 (2.5, MT) Base weight (kg): 1,530
IMPREZA STATUS: Updated for 2017 — The BRZ was created in concert with Toyota, which now markets its iteration as the 86 (previously the Scion FR-S). Lightweight (about 1,260 kilograms) is definitely one of the BRZ's primary advantages. A quick steering ratio that's more in tune with the BRZ's sporty nature is also part of the package. DRIVETRAIN: For 2017, Subaru has made minor adjustments to the nose and worked over the 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant. That effort has resulted in five more horsepower (now 205) for engines mated to six-speed manual trans-
sive Impreza’s all-wheel-drive sedan and hatchback models displays a design maturity that’s practically guaranteed to win over new fans to the brand. Both versions are the first to use the new (and considerably more rigid) Subaru Global Platform that the company claims makes the Impreza a better riding and handling car that can also absorb the energy from crashes more effectively. The two body styles are also slightly larger in length, width and in distance between the front and rear wheels. DRIVETRAIN: Other modifications include a new suspension package that reduces body roll in the corners and a two-horsepower gain in the Impreza’s 2.0-litre horizontally opposed (flat) four-cylinder engine that now makes 152 horsepower. Fortunately, the five-speed manual remains the base transmission, while a continuously variable unit with seven pre-set ratios is optional. On the safety front, the Impreza’s available EyeSight system now includes Reverse Automatic Braking that stops the car should it detect a person or object while the vehicle is backing up. Base price (incl. destination): $22,000 (est.) Type: Four-door sedan/wagon Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre H-4 (152) Transmissions: Five-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 8.5/6.4/7.6 (CVT, est.) STATUS: No changes for 2017 — Subaru remains solidly in the driver's seat with the everpopular Outback wagon and close kin to the Legacy sedan. The Outback was last refreshed for 2015, but it still looks current and has a quiet, comfortable ride. Still its primary selling feature is the standard all-wheel-drive with Subaru’s Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn. DRIVETRAIN: Unchanged are the base 2.5litre four-cylinder and optional 3.6-litre six-cylinder engines. Both engines are connected to continuously variable transmissions, but the H-4 can still be had with a six-speed manual gearbox. A driver-controlled X-Mode for the standard all-wheel-drive system adjusts the transmission and engine output to reduce wheel spin. X-Mode also includes Hill Descent Control, which keeps vehicle speed to a crawl when traveling slowly down a step and slippery slope. Incline Start Assist briefly holds the vehicle when starting on hills, while a Hill Holder System prevents the Outback from rolling backward when stopped, until the accelerator is pressed. When combined with the Outback's 22-centimetre ground clearance, X-Mode makes the Outback more fit for rugged off-road duty. Base price (incl. destination): $29,650 Type: All-wheel-drive wagon Engines: (h.p.): 2.5-litre H4 (175); 3.6-litre H6 (256) Transmission: Six-speed manual, continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 11.0/8.2/9.7 (2.5, MT) Base weight (kg): 1,650
TOYOTA 4RUNNER
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — Toyota's rugged body-on-frame 4Runner shuns change for change’s sake, receiving its last major refresh for the 2014 model year. It’s not the handsomest sport utility vehicle on the trail, but it’s one of the most rugged, allowing you to go just about anywhere that a comparable Jeep Wrangler Unlimited can travel. The four-wheeldrive option, called Active Traction Control, comes with with front and rear differentials that automatically lock up when slippage is detected. The system can also be completely switched off by the driver.Trail Edition 4Runners also get Multi-Terrain Select with Mud and Sand, Loose Rock, Mogul and Rock modes. DRIVETRAIN: The standard 270-horsepower V6 isn’t too hard on gas, considering 4Runner’s 2,000-kilogram curb weight (perhaps updating to a six-speed automatic transmission from the current five-speed would help in this regard). Hill Start Assist that keeps the 4Runner from rolling backward when stopped on an incline and Hill Descent Control that prevents unintended out-of-control acceleration on a downward slope are standard. For maximum offroad capability, the rugged and sporty TRD Pro Series comes with TRD-spec springs, Bilsteinbrand remote-reservoir shocks, unique 17-inch black alloy wheels, and more aggressive Nittobrand off-road tires. Base price (incl. destination): $46,200 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Engine (h.p.): 4.0-litre V6 (270) Transmission: Five-speed automatic Drivetrain: Four-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 14.2/11.1/9.8 Base weight (kg): 2,000
86
STATUS: The rebadged FR-S finds a new home — Scion’s loss is Toyota’s gain for 2017. With Toyota wasting no time in pulling the plug on the Scion brand, the best of the defunct division’s models are now sporting new logos. In the case of the FR-S sport coupe, it means a name change to the 86. Other changes include a five horsepower bump in the four-cylinder engine’s horsepower output to 205, revised suspension settings and a stiffened body (added bracing) on six-speed manual-transmission models. This is a serious driving machine, so shift-indicator lights on the tach can be set at 100-rpm increments starting from 2,000 rpm up to the engine's 7,400-rpm redline. The driver can also engage a warning chime that goes off when the engine's max rev limit is about to be reached. DRIVETRAIN: The powertrain sits well back of the front wheels to optimize distribution of the car's svelte 1,250-kilogram front:rear heft at 53:47. Dealer-installed add-ons include a premium audio package, fog lights, rear spoiler, sport exhaust system, 18-inch wheels, performance brake pads and a cold air intake for a richer air/fuel mixture and a bit more power and sound. All of this makes for a great driving experinece for those who take their sports cars seriously. Base price (incl. destination): $31,300 Type: Two-door coupe Engine (h.p.): 2.0-litre H4 (205) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.) Drivetrain: Rear-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 10.9/7.9/9.6 (MT) Base Weight (kg): 1,250
AVALON
STATUS: Unchanged for 2017 — The Avalon gained a stellar reputation as a car that successfully "out-Buicked" Buick and in so doing it poached some of the American brand's aging customer base. To combat an ever-increasing average driver age, the recently restyled sedan actually looks more youthful than the Camry. DRIVETRAIN: The 3.5-litre V-6 and six-speed transmission (with paddle shifters) hauls down decent fuel economy. As before, regardless of the engine, only the front wheels are driven. Because of customer feedback, Toyota has relaxed the Avalon’s somewhat firmer ride a bit. By its very nature the base Avalon shows up with an abundance of standard equipment, although for the full-on luxury experience you'll need to spring for the Limited edition’s premium

270) V-6 with all-wheel-drive standard on all but the price-leader LE model. The V-6 is also more fuel efficient, aided by the installation of a new eight-speed automatic transmission that replaces the six-speed unit that’s exclusive to the base engine. The AWD Highlander Hybrid also gets the reworked V-6, but sticks with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). It’s now rated at 306 horsepower, up from the previous 280. Toyota has added a number of key crash-avoiding safety features as standard equipment on all Highlander trim levels. Base price (incl. destination): $35,500 Type: Four-door tall wagon Engines (h.p.): 3.5-litre V-6 (278); 3.5-litre V6 with electric motor (306, net) Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic; CVT (Hybrid) Drivetrain: Front- /all-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 12.5/9.3/11.1 (FWD) Base weight (kg): 1,880
PRIUS STATUS: Unchanged, but for minor content tweaks — Being tops in class doesn't automatically guarantee success, with several mid-size marques chasing the Camry’s tailpipe. A couple of seasons ago, Toyota sharpened the Camry's claws in one of the brand's more dramatic adjustments. A significantly different front end improved looks a whole lot and a new dashboard and more stylish seat covers were also installed. The Camry’s two gasoline and a gas-electric power teams remain competitive against the rest of the field. Meanwhile the Hybrid scores impressive marks in fuel economy, but only if you keep a light touch on the gas pedal. Both gasoline engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, while the Hybrid employs a continuously variable unit (CVT). The base Camry LE arrives with most of the expected content, but stepping up to the XSE and XLE will really make a difference with added sport and luxury content, including a power moonroof, acoustic noise-reducing windshield, push-button start and a premium audio package that's combined with a navigation system. Base prices (incl. destination): $26,700; $31,300 (Hybrid) Type: Four-door sedan Engines: (h.p.): 2.5-litre I-4 (178); 3.5-litre V6 (268); 2.4-litre I-4 with 105-kilowatt electric motor (200, Hybrid) Transmissions: Six-speed automatic (opt.); continuously variable (hybrid) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.4/6.7/8.2 (2.5); 5.5/6.0/5.7 (Hybrid Base weight (kg): 1,480
COROLLA
SIENNA
STATUS: New for 2016; unchanged for 2017 — The Prius remains the undisputed king of the hybrids, although the competition is beginning to gain traction. For 2016, a new and overall larger and roomier edition arrived with completely redesigned -- and quite attractive -sheetmetal that gave the car a more premium visage. Unfortunately the dashboard is an odd mash-up of shapes amidst large swaths of vacant space.Toyota claims the new Prius represents a 10 per cent improvement in overall fuel economy. A less weighty albeit denser lithium-ion battery pack combined with a more efficient gas engine is being credited with the improvement. Toyota also equipped the Prius with a much better controlled suspension, which was previously a sore point with some buyers who found the ride a bit too mushy. Along with the usual standard features, Prius owners can also access a range of active safety enhancements such as adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, collision-avoidance with pedestrian detection and automatic high beams. Note that the Prius plug-in hybrid returns for 2017 as the all-new Prius Prime. Base price (incl. destination): $28,900 Type: Four-door mid-sized hatchback Engine (h.p.): 1.8-litre I-4 with electric motor (121, combined) Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 4.4/4.6/4.5 Base Weight (kg): 1,400
PRIUS PRIME
STATUS: Mild redesign and a wagon added to the lineup — the Corolla brand has now been around for 50 years. Since they it has spawned literally dozens of Toyota models over the decades and helped build the Toyota franchise into the powerhouse it is today. To celebrate this half-century milestone, the Corolla receives an updated front-end and adds a specially equipped 50th Anniversary Edition model. As well, with the demise of the Scion brand, the iM wagon will henceforth be called the Corolla iM (The Scion iA and FR-S will also be relabeled as Toyotas). DRIVETRAIN: Unaltered is a 132-horsepower four-cylinder that carries over from the previous generation and connects to a sixspeed manual transmission, or optional continuously variable (CVT) unit (the four-speed automatic finally bites the dust). Toyota's engineers added seven artificial shift points to the CVT that function automatically (or controlled via available steering-column-mounted paddle shifters) that mimic a regular automatic. The LE Eco is equipped with a 140-horsepower version of the 1.8 that gets slightly better fuel economy than the other trims. For 2017 all Corollas arrive with an array of standard active (crashavoiding) safety gear. Base price (incl. destination): $18,200 Type: Four-door sedan, four-door wagon (iM) Engine (h.p.): 1.8-litre I-4 (132, 140 LE Eco) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 7.9/6.1/7.1 (CVT) Base Weight (kg): 1,270
HIGHLANDER
STATUS: Revised powertrain and other minor adjustments — The Sienna remains one of the best all-around minivans you can buy. And until the new Chrysler Pacifica showed up, it was the only minivan with available allwheel-drive. For 2017, the Sienna swaps out its 266-horsepower 3.5-litre V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission duo for a whole new 296-horsepower 3.5 that’s hitched to an equally new eight-speed automatic. Added to its added power are plenty of with smart features and enough carrying capacity to cart up to eight friends and/or family members (seven if the optional second-row high-back chairs are selected to replace the three-person bench). Pretty much everything the driver can see or touch is of high quality, including soft-touch materials on the door cards and dash, a threespoke heated steering wheel, centre console, transmission shifter, and the integrated Entune display audio system. In the top-level Sienna Limited, the mid-row buckets turn into reclining lounge seats that also feature swing-up foot rests for maximum self-indulgent travel (just try to pry the kids out of them). The thirdrow bench can be folded flat into the load floor when not needed. TACOMA
STATUS: New for 2017 — The Prime replaces the Prius plug-in that was phased out in 2015. The hybrid’s major accomplishment is it can remain in electric-only mode regardless of how hard you push the accelerator. The previous plug-in required babying the throttle to avoid activating the gas engine. The secret is in the lithium-ion battery pack that has 12times the capacity of the Prius Eco’s batteries. In fact if you’re careful, you can reach 134 kmh on only electric propulsion. Toyota claims the Prime’s maximum electric-power distance is more than 35 kilometres (less than half the Chevrolet Volt’s distance), with a maximum 960-kilometre total system range. Although the batteries weigh more than the standard Prius’ unit, greater use of lighter materials in the Prime’s construction results in only a 35-kilogram weight gain. Both Prius and Prime hybrids share the same architecture, engines and motors, but there are obvious design differences between the two. Inside, an optional 11.6-inch Tesla Model Slike vertical info-/system display screen dominates a significantly different dashboard. Ultimately, though, it’s the Prime’s impressive electrical performance and unique styling that will draw buyers to this unique plug-in. Base price (incl. destination): $32,500 (est.) STATUS: Updated styling, engine and safety features — The eight-passenger Highlander is a popular alternative to a minivan, especially when equipped with available third-row seating; it has plenty of room for those who adorn their car windows with stick-people characterizations of their broods. These folks also enjoy a well-appointed cabin and a comfortable ride, which have always been Highlander hallmarks. For 2017 Toyota has devised a more dramatic front-end design, including a grille that appears almost too large for the rest of the body. DRIVETRAIN: Mechanically, the Highlander is equipped with a 278-horsepower (up from
DRIVETRAIN: Unchanged was the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission for the gas-only version, while the Hybrid uses a similar 2.5 engine connected to a continuously variable transmission plus two electric motors. The gasoline RAV4’s optional all-wheel-drive has a "Lock" mode keeps half the power going to the rear wheels as long as you're driving slower that 40 km-h. Sport mode allows wider transfer of torque between the front and rear wheels (as much as half to the rear) than the Auto mode. The RAV4’s interior is awash with "soft-touch" materials and silver trim bits. STATUS: Carryover for 2027 — The Tacoma remains Toyota’s top-selling pickup, but no doubt is feeling the heat from GM’s Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon mid-sizers plus the second-generation Honda Ridgeline. A 2016 redesign for both the Access Cab and Double Cab models resulted in bolder styling. The restyled cabin benefits from considerably more sound insulation. DRIVETRAIN: The base engine continues as a 2.7-litre four-cylinder, while a more potent V-6 is optional. The I-4 is paired with a fivespeed manual transmission, while the V-6 gets a six-speed unit (a six-speed manual is standard on TRD models). An available six-speed automatic is common to both powerplants. Four-wheel-drive can be added, regardless of engine or cab choices, however manual-transmission-equipped Tacomas will automatically come with four-wheel-drive. The base SR Access Cab is thin on features, but the SR5 adds considerably more content. The TRD (Toyota Racing Development) gets sport-tuned or off-road Bilstein-brand shocks, Multi-Terrain Select system that regulates the transmission, throttle and brakes for mud, rock or sand conditions, locking rear differential and a crawl control for extreme trail conditions. This package makes it a serious off-road contender. TUNDRA
STATUS: Late-arriving Hybrid joins the lineup — Five years into its fourth generation and Toyota’s compact sport ute remains as popular as ever. And it’s likely to stay there for a while with the all-wheel-drive RAV4 Hybrid. That model was part of a recent refresh that included revised sheetmetal and interior adjustments and an extension in trim levels.
STATUS: Carries over for 2017 — Toyota keeps building on its Tundra's positives in an attempt to be more appealing in a tough market segment where The Ford F-150, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Ram series and the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra tend to grab most of the headlines. The Tundra’s last update was for the 2014 model year when it received a new hood, grille and a three-piece lower bumper. The Tundra continues to be available in regular-cab, extended-length Double Cab and four-door CrewMax with its extra-sized rear doors. DRIVETRAIN: The standard 310-horsepower V-8 and top-tuned 381-horsepower V-8 are carryovers and operate using six-speed automatic transmissions. Four-wheel-drive is optional with either engine. Of the four trim levels, the 1794 Edition is the most over the top model, with saddle-brown leather seats with suede inserts along with just about every imaginable luxury item. Lastly, the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Pro Series package gets blacked-out body pieces, 18-inch black wheels with Michelin off-road tires, and a throaty TRD dual exhaust. It also sports a five-centimetre lift in ride height, more wheel travel and bigger Bilstein-brand shocks with external reservoirs. Base price (incl. destination): $32,300 Type: Full-size pickup truck Engines (h.p): 4.6-litre V8 (310); 5.7-litre V8 (381) Transmission: Six-speed automatic Drivetrain: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheeldrive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 17.2/12.9/15.3 (4.6, 2WD) Base Weight (kg): 2,230
YARIS
STATUS: The hatchback and sedan remain unchanged —The Yaris gets by more on Toyota’s reputation for build quality and high resale value than for leading-edge style and content. Quite honestly, the little hatchback has a tough time holding its own against sub-compact leaders including the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa Note, Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Accent. However it’s a different story when it comes to the Yaris sedan. This little four-door is actually built by Mazda and is called the Mazda 2 outside of Canada and the U.S. For a sub-compact car, there's plenty of passenger and trunk room and at least adequate space for two adults (three in a pinch) in the rear seat. The dashboard, control and interior trim are firstrate and substantially better than what you'll find in other entry-level car. DRIVETRAIN: The sedan runs with Mazda’s 106-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, which differs from the Yaris hatchback’s powerplant with the same displacement and horsepower rating. For an extra $1,600 more than the hatch the sedan also gets more content, but more importantly, it’s way more fun to drive. Base price (incl. destination): $17,100 (hatchback); $18,700 (sedan) Type: Two- /four-door hatchback; four-door sedan Engine (h.p.): 1.5-litre I4 (106) Transmissions: Five-speed manual; fourspeed automatic (hatchback); six-speed manual, six-speed automatic (sedan) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 7.6/5.7/6.7 sedan, MT) Base Weight (kg): 1,050 (hatchback)
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
STATUS: The Golf Alltrack wagon joins the lineup — Volkswagen practically invented the hatchback and has stuck with that shape for more than four decades. Following the addition of the Golf Sportwagen for 2016, VW is introducing the Alltrack offshoot for 2017. Unlike the Sportwagen, the Alltrack is, as the name implies, is fitted with VW’s 4Motion all-wheeldrive system (also optional on the Sportwagen for 2017) that can divert up to 50 per cent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. Alltrack models also have an extra 2.5 centimetres of ground clearance plus additional body cladding. DRIVETRAIN: Powering the Alltrack is the same 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine found in your basic Golf hatchback plus the Sportwagen, while the sporty GTI uses a more potent 2.0litre turbo I4. Returning unchanged for 2017 is the AWD Golf R that punches above its weight with 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Base price (incl. destination): $20,600 Type: Two- /four-door hatchback Engines (h.p.): 1.8-litre I-4, turbocharged (170); 2.0-litre I-4 turbocharged (210, GTI; 292, R) Transmissions: Five-speed manual; Sixspeed automatic (opt.); six-speed manual (std. JETTA
STATUS: Say goodbye to the Jetta Hybrid — VW’s compact sedan is also the brand’s price-leader, but that doesn’t mean buyers get short-changed when it comes to style and impressive ride and handling qualities. For 2017 there’s a bit less choice with the departure of the Jetta turbo-diesel, followed by the Jetta Hybrid (low fuel prices are cutting into hybrid sales everywhere). DRIVETRAIN: Still on the thrifty side is the Jetta’s one-year-old turbocharged 1.4-litre I-4 that serves as the base engine. This nifty little 150-horse powerplant is fuel-efficient and will satisfy most drivers’ needs. More spice comes with the available 170-horsepower turbo-fourcylinder and 210-horsepower turbo-four in the GLI. All models get VW's MIB II infotainment system with USB connectivity and charging. The Jetta's option list includes increasingly popular safety items (available on nearly all trim levels) such as a blind spot monitor, cross-traffic alert when backing up, forward collision warning and parallel-parking assistance. Base price (incl. destination): $17,600 Type: Four-door sedan Engines (h.p.): 1.4-litre I-4, turbocharged (150); 1.8-litre I-4, turbocharged (170); 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (210, GLI) Transmissions: Five-speed manual; sixspeed manual (GLI); six-speed automatic (opt. on 1.4 and 1.8); six-speed automated manual (opt. on GLI) Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 83./5.9/7.2 (1.4, MT) Base weight (kg): 1,340
PASSAT
STATUS: As a long-standing model in the Volkswagen lineup, the Passat needs no introduction, nor are major changes deemed necessary right now. Minor trim/content adjustments — For 2016, Volkswagen gave the big sedan a fairly decent makeover as everything forward of the windshield was replaced, leaving a wider grille, narrower headlights — with optional LED versions available — and a
deeper lower fascia. The rear was also updated, including LED taillights and extra chrome trim. Interior styling is clean, uncluttered and devoid of the trendy dashboard swoops and swirls found in competitors. DRIVETRAIN: The turbocharged 170-horsepower four-cylinder carries over as does the optional 280-horsepower V-6. The I-4 shifts gears with a six-speed automatic transmission (the manual gearbox has been dropped), while the V-6 operates with six-speed automated manual gearbox (DSG). All Passat trim levels, starting with the base Trendline, now come standard with forward collision warning with autonomous braking, while blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert are also standard on upper trim levels. The Trendline is also equipped with Volkswagen’s MIB II infotainment system that can read and charge USB devices. At the top end, the Passat Highline comes with its own unique front and rear styling, lower side sills, and 19-inch wheels with summer-only performance tires. STATUS: Minor updates for the current generation’s final year — Volkswagen's Golf-based Tiguan wagon, although still good looking, is past its best-before date (an all-new version with available three-row seating is due out for the 2018 model year). However that doesn’t mean VW has abandoned it completely. A shake-up in the model lineup includes a new Wolfsburg Edition trim. The Tiguan (the name originates from splicing the words tiger and iguana together) competes in the same category as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape and Kia Sportage, to name just a few. A category, by the way, that is one of the most popular witrh the car-buying public, in North America at least. DRIVETRAIN: Remaining standard is a 200horsepower four-cylinder that’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. There's plenty of standard equipment of the air/cruise/power variety, including an electronic parking brake. Equus Automotive of Rochester Hills, Mich. has created a scratch-built, luxury-oriented muscle car called the Bass 770. The mostly aluminumbodied coupe resembles a 1965 Ford Mustang 2+2 fastback that has received a nose graft from a 1971 Plymouth Satellite. Beneath the skin is a custom-fabricated, racing-inspired chassis (also aluminum) that’s as modern as they come. It houses a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 borrowed from the Corvette ZR1 that generates 640 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque. It can propel the 3,460-pound (1,570kilogram) street beast to 60 mph (96 km-h) from rest in a claimed 3.4 seconds. Prices start at US $290,000 and head up to $340,000, depending on equipment. STATUS: A powerful hybrid engine joins the lineup — The current-generation XC90 has changed from the original version in every way and is roughly 115 kilograms lighter than the previous edition (now 1,940 kilograms), despite being about the same size. The Scandinavian design theme includes natural-wood inlays. DRIVETRAIN: The T6 model operates with a supercharged and turbocharged “Drive-E” fourcylinder. It uses the turbo for top-end power and the belt-driven supercharger to help out at lower engine revs. New for 2017 is the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid that adds an electric motor to the gas engine. That increases the net output to 400 horsepower and allows the XC90 to travel up to 40 kilometres solely on electric power. It also gets 10.0 l/100 km city and 8.8 on the highway. Both the T6 and T8 hybrid use eight-speed automatic transmissions. Although all-wheel-drive is standard, the T8's electric motor powers the rear wheels without employing a conventional driveline Available XC90 options let you add more active safety content plus an air suspension system.
