CITY OF WEST KELOWNA

A NOTE FROM

2fĂşce hours 30am- 30pm Monday to Friday (excluding Stat Holidays) GENERAL INQUIRIES

Mayor Doug Findlater Fall is upon us in West Kelowna. Take a moment to enjoy the fresh air, and beautiful fall colours. The Fall Recreation Guide offers a wide range of activities for all interests, ages and abilities. There is something for everyone to enjoy. It has been another busy year for parks and recreation in the City of West Kelowna. We officially opened the outdoor Memorial Park Amphitheatre and a new, more advanced skate park. The skate park and amphitheatre are proving to be extremely popular. Memorial Park will be a main event site for our Canada Day 150th birthday celebrations on July 1, 2017, and the new skate park and outdoor amphitheatre will feature prominently in the milestone event. While you are looking through these pages you will notice a variety of new programs. For this fall, School District 23 has offered the City of West Kelowna greater access

to the George Pringle Gymnasium. As a result, we will be offering a variety of new Drop-in gymnasium programs for children, teens and adults. We are also offering a new teen program called Teen Fitness Mix. This program provides the opportunity for youth to experience a variety of fitness disciplines. The program is conveniently set up for teens at Mt. Boucherie High School, right after school. There are new opportunities for adults to learn the ins and outs of home ownership through our First Home Buying and Using Home Equity workshops or expand your artistic repertoire with the Soap Stone Carving course. This fall, take the opportunity to get involved and stay active in West Kelowna - a wonderful place to live, work and play.

KidSport™ is a community based sport-funding program that provides grants for children ages 6-18 years. There are over 30 community chapters in BC and over 175 chapters across Canada. KidSport™ works to eliminate the únancial barriers to sport participation, so all kids can play. In March 2011 the West Kelowna KidSport™ Chapter began awarding groups to help children and youth participate in sport programs. Fall 2016 | West Kelowna Recreation Guide | Think Active Be Active

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Since its launch in February 2005, Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

778-797-8800 • West Kelowna Recreation & Culture

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 5 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $300 per child can be allocated per season. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.
