Westside Daze: 4 days of great family fun By BARB AGUIAR Westside Weekly

Westside Daze are here again. Mayor Doug Findlater, Westbank First Nation Chief Robert Louie and other politicians will be at the opening ceremonies on Thursday, June 30 at 6:45 p.m. to kick off the free four-day family fun festival. The ceremonies take place at Memorial Park as part of an evening of free entertainment. Westside Daze is the first opportunity to see the new West Kelowna Youth Ambassador team in action. The ambassador program is run under the umbrella of the Westside Celebration Society, the group of volunteers who put on Westside Daze. There is no need to worry about making breakfast during Westside Daze. There will be pancakes available every morning with Westside Daze fundraising pancake breakfasts on Friday, July 1 and Sunday, July 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Memorial Park. Saturday July 2, the United Way will be holding a pancake breakfast in the Westbank Lions Community Hall parking lot before the parade from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. The Westside Daze draw returns with five great prizes. Tickets cost $2 each and only 2000 are sold. First prize is a J.K. Schmidt diamond ring; second prize is a Valhalla Helicopter Tour worth $1200; third prize is a return flight from Kelowna to Victoria with Pacific Coastal Air worth $1009; fourth prize is a J.K. Schmidt men’s watch valued at $500 and fifth prize is an accommodation package at the Cove Lakeside Resort worth $478. Westside Daze works to be accessible to everyone.

Events are free and Telus volunteers will be driving people with mobility challenges from the handicap parking lot at the Johnson-Bentley pool down to the field where the action is and back. A handicap sign is not required. The service will help the elderly, pregnant women, and anyone else with mobility challenges. Unfortunately, there will be no midway this year. Irwin (Bingo) Hauser, the founder of West Coast Amusements and the owner of the division that comes to Westside Daze, died in September, and his family is not moving the equipment this year. It is their intention to return next year. Valhalla Helicopters will be in the field where West Coast Amusements traditionally sets up, offering helicopter tours for a fee, weather permitting. A number of attractions will be available in Memorial Park every day, including concessions and crafters, the Kids’ Zone with small games and activities for children, and the Westbank Museum in its air-conditioned trailer. Organizers are hoping the new amphitheatre seating will be ready for Westside Daze; however, they have made a contingency plan to turn the stage and offer seating in the field should the amphitheatre not be complete. While most of the Westside Daze activities take place at Memorial Park, there will be two off-site events Friday, July 1. The West Kelowna Yacht Club will be hosting a barbecue and tours of the club in Gellatly Bay from 2 to 6 p.m. As well, the Royal Canadian Legion Westbank Branch will offer a barbecue and open house at its Dobbin Road location from 2 to 7 p.m.

Kids Fair overflowing with fun activities By BARB AGUIAR Westside Weekly

It’s all about free fun for kids of all ages at the Westside Daze Kids’ Fair on Saturday, July 2 from noon to 4 p.m. at Memorial Park beside the Johnson-Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre in West Kelowna. This year’s theme is Under the Big Top and there are plenty of activities to keep families busy. If you have always loved the circus, Vancouver’s Inner Ring Circus will be offering workshops on circus skills such as juggling. Then, from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Inner Ring Circus will perform on its own stage. Have your face painted like your favourite superhero or perhaps with a butterfly and get a new whacky hair-do from the hair sprayers. Check out the fire truck or play a giant lawn game with friends and family. Kids can burn off some energy scaling the climbing wall or wriggling their way through the Ogopogo Crawl Zone while little ones can hop around in the bouncy castle for small toddlers. Test your aim at the tossing games or see if you can send somebody for a sudden icy dip at the dunk tank. Man’s best friend is always a popular attraction and families can cheer on dogs of all sizes as they race through an obstacle course of weave poles, jumps and tunnels at the Central Okanagan Dog Agility Club’s demonstration from 12:30 pm. to 1:30 p.m.

Take home a balloon animal or other fun balloon creation made by That Balloon Guy. Get up close and personal with the friendly animals at the Little Rascals Petting Zoo. All the animals are small, including the many chickens with weird feathers. “They’re all so cute,” said Jenny Sheppard, Kids’ Fair director. Relax while watching performances by talented young people, with Sophia Boal, the 2015 Youth Talent Competition winner, singing from 12:40 to 12:55 p.m., members of the Sarafanov Dance Studio performing from 12:55 1:25 p.m, and Michael Painchaud, third-place finisher at the youth talent competition, playing from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Cool down and take a step back in time in the air-conditioned Westbank Museum trailer. All the activities at the Kids’ Fair are free to keep the fun accessible to everybody. The West Kelowna Daybreak Rotary Club will be offering a barbecue concession so people can fuel up between activities. Stick around for the Silverbacks and Rod Stewart evening concert starting at 7 p.m. or bring the family to Gellatly Bay to see a Formula 1 tunnel boat roar onto the lake at 8:45 p.m. The boat can reach 100 kph in less than four seconds and has a maximum speed of over 240 kph. Round out the evening oohing and aahing at the Westside Daze fireworks display at 10:15 p.m. For a full schedule of events for this year’s Westside Dazes, see page 5.

Thank you to all the volunteers that make Westside Daze possible.

Annual car show on Canada Day By BARB AGUIAR Westside Weekly

Canada Day on Friday July 1 means cars and motorcycles at Westside Daze. Start the day with a Westside Daze fundraiser pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. before browsing the Westside Napa Car and Motorcycle Show and Shine from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Memorial Park by the Johnson-Bentley pool. Registration is for the show and shine is free and advance registration is not required. Up to 154 vehicles fit on the field, and some years organizers have had to turn some exhibitors away. The show and shine attracts all kinds of vehicles, from Ferraris to Rolls Royce and Model Ts. “You never know what is going to show up,” said Chris Haffenden, who organizes the show and shine. Car awards will be handed out for stock vintage, stock modern, import, street rod muscle, special interest and people’s choice. Motorcycle awards include vintage, modern and modified.

BARB AGUIAR/Westside Weekly

Votes have to be in by 1 p.m. Awards are handed out at 3:30 p.m. The show attracts a lot of gear heads; however, Haffenden said the vehicles are painted so well it’s an art show for a lot of people. “It looks beautiful and the automobile enthusiasts love it,” said Leah Thordarson, president of the Westside Celebration Society.

“Admission is free, they are on grass, they can look out to the lake, see the mountain, and they can hear the music.” Country singer Ben Klick will entertain from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by the classic rock of the Silverbacks from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. The Westbank Rotary Club will offer a barbecue concession for those looking for lunch and concessions and crafter booths will be open.

Everybody loves a (Westside) parade! By BARB AGUIAR Westside Weekly

The Westside Daze parade on Saturday, July 2 will have it all – hockey heroes, music, candy and a giant water fight. The West Kelowna Warriors junior hockey team will be this year’s honourary parade marshals and lead the dignitaries. The team won the hearts of the community after capturing the 2016 national junior hockey championship and will parade with their hardware: the BCHL’s Fred Page Cup, the Western Canada Cup and the national championship RBC Cup. Organizers are starting a new tradition this year by asking people to bring nonperishable food donations for the Westside Food Bank. Food bank representatives will be collecting the donations along the parade route, so pack a can of soup or beans for the food bank when gathering up your hat and sunscreen for the parade. Parade entries begin arriving at the staging area on Brenda Lee Road at 8:30 a.m. and judging begins at 9:45 a.m. with ribbons for best commercial float, best local and visiting community float, best musical group and best novelty entry. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on the corner of Butt Road and Old Okanagan Highway headed south. It will turn right on Drought Road and right again on Brown Road and finish at the corner of Brown and Butt Roads. BARB AGUIAR/Westside Weekly

The Westside Daze parade is fun for all ages. Hazel Lundin, her sister Annie Voth and Hazel’s daughter Penny Flinder staked out their spot early on the sidewalk. The sisters come to the parade every year.

Parade

Continued from page 8

Every year people come early to stake out their favourite viewing spot along the parade route. Children look forward to the candy, freezies and other giveaways handed out to the crowd. People are eager to get out and participate in the free family fun festival, suggested Carl Bertholm, who has been organizing the parade for over 12 years. This year will be his swan song, however, as Bertholm will be moving from West Kelowna. “Every year there has been something different,” he said. “I guess we’ve managed to have a lot of really good entertainment come into the parade. It gets to be a hard act to follow every year.”

Last year saw almost 100 floats in the parade. Crowd favourites the Shriners will be back again with their tiny cars and whacky cycles as well as the Kelowna Pipe Band. New this year is a tribute to ABBA, a Swedish pop group popular in the late 70s. The parade boasts B.C.’s only Wet Zone, a free-for-all water battle limited to the final block of the parade on Brown Road between Butt and Bering Roads. Residents are on their front lawns brandishing garden hoses while parade participants and spectators arm themselves with water balloons and the largest water guns they can find. Floats that want to get wet are delegated to the end of the parade while floats that need to stay dry are diverted from the Wet Zone. West Kelowna Fire Rescue closes out the parade, and members use the fire hose to make sure everyone in the Wet Zone gets thoroughly soaked.

Ben Klick among this year’s entertainers By BARB AGUIAR Westside Weekly

Bring your family, your lawn chairs and your blankets down to Memorial Park beside the Johnson-Bentley pool for some great free Westside Daze entertainment. This year will offer a variety of music to appeal to a number of tastes and ages with three evenings of free Westside Daze concerts under the stars plus music throughout Canada Day. The warm summer air cools off quickly as the evening progresses, so pack a small blanket along with something to sit on. If you have small children, they can just roll up in the blanket and go to sleep. The fun kicks off on Thursday, June 30 when Westside Daze will bring in an amateur group to perform for the first time. The Kelowna Secondary School Rhythm and Blues Band, under the direction of Chris Perry, will start the evening at 6:15 p.m. for a 30-minute set before the official Westside Daze opening ceremonies with West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater, Westbank First Nation Chief Robert Louie and other local dignitaries at 6:45 p.m. Perennial favourite Leif David will amuse and mystify the crowd with his family friendly magic act at 7 p.m. The headliner, Rann Berry’s Motown Revue, takes the stage at 8 p.m. Berry, who has previously appeared at Westside Daze with his One Hit Wonders show, returns with his 10-piece band to groove out hits including the Theme from Shaft, Heard it Through the Grape Vine and Soul Man. Stick around after the Motown Revue as Kinshira, an 11-member performance troupe specializing in fire, will be performing at dusk, around 10:15 p.m. This will be the fifth year Kinshira has appeared at Westside Daze. Their 45-minute act includes both hula hooping and juggling with fire. The entire act is set to music and one routine flows into the next.

Family friendly magician Leif David is part of this year’s entertainment.

BARB AGUIAR/Westside Weekly

“It’s a long evening but a spectacular splashy grand opening,” said Leah Thordarson, president of the Westside Celebration Society. Friday, July 1 is Canada Day and Westside Daze is jam-packed with free entertainment. Rising country musician Ben Klick of West Kelowna will perform from 9 a.m. to noon. From 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., the Silverbacks will play classic rock to tie in with the car and motorcycle show and shine. The party continues Friday evening with a country theme as the Pam Ferens Band opens with a mix of old and new country from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday has two headliner acts with Steve Hillis from Vancouver up first from 8 to 9 p.m. with his Garth Brooks tribute including hits like Baton Rouge. Aaron Halliday from Penticton will follow with his tribute to traditional country music artist Alan Jackson with hits including Chattahoochee.

Halliday was well received when he performed at Westside Daze last year as an opening act. He will close out the night, performing until 10 p.m. Saturday, July 2 is Classic Rock night with the Silverbacks returning to play at 7 p.m. Direct from Las Vegas, headliner Vic Vaga will take the stage for the first time in West Kelowna at 8 p.m. with his Rod Stewart Tribute backed by the Cadillac Kings. This show has already toured throughout Canada to a great response. Vaga, who has uncanny resemblance to Stewart, will perform tunes from Maggie May to Have I Told You Lately. The fireworks in Gellatly Bay start at 10:15 p.m., after the show. The truck for the Westside location of the Central Okanagan Food Bank will be at the concerts. Whenever people can bring something for the food bank when they come down to the field, that’s really nice, said Thordarson.

Community worship celebration

Friends and neighbours can celebrate together at the Westside Daze Community Worship Celebration on Sunday, July 3 at Memorial Park. This is the fourth year that Westside Daze has offered the opportunity for the community to worship together. “We want to encourage people to come,” said Don Richmond, chaplain of the West Kelowna Warriors hockey team and emcee for the event. “It’s not promoting one church or one denomination. It’s community worship” Organizers are inviting people to start the community celebration by coming to the Westside Daze fundraiser pancake breakfast starting at 9 a.m. before the service begins at 9:45 a.m. This year Powers Creek Community Church will be playing a major role, providing a worship band with a modern sound complete with guitars and drums, led by Pastor Jeff Falke. Falke will also be in charge of the worship service, which will have the Lord’s Prayer as a theme. Pastor Dave Barbour from Powers Creek Community Church will be giving one of two short addresses.

Randy Benson, the executive director of the Kelowna Gospel Mission, will deliver the other. In between the brief addresses there will be plenty of music, including a singa-long for children led by Amy Falke of Powers Creek. Music is important, Richmond said, as it gives people an opportunity to participate by singing. “It feels like it would not be as much of a celebration without music,” he said. “Whenever you use the word celebration, somewhere down the line music comes up.” Richmond said the music selections will be uplifting and hopefully inspiring. The celebration is going to be upbeat, enjoyable and people will leave feeling encouraged, said Richmond. The celebration will wrap up by 11:15 a.m. with Richmond leading everyone in reciting the Lord’s Prayer. Powers Creek Community Church will be directing its congregation to the Community Worship Celebration and other churches will be encouraging their congregations to come.

Chilling out with Canada Day celebrations By BARB AGUIAR Westside Weekly

Baker Anja Dumas has been creating the giant Westside Daze Canada Day cake for four years, and making a cake to serve between 800 and 1,000 people is no small feat. Several local businesses team up to donate the ingredients for the approximately three by eight foot double layer cake with the Canadian flag depicted in strawberries. “We’ve always been told this is the best cake in the valley,” said Leah Thordarson, president of the Westside Celebration Society.

Dumas uses 120 eggs in preparing 16 to 18 layers of white cake, with one layer set aside for a raised maple leaf. Her helpers wash and slice 40 pounds of strawberries. Dumas works at Nature’s Oven and uses the bakery’s rotation oven the evening before Canada Day to bake all the cake layers at once. On Canada Day morning, the layers are delivered on a rack to the Westbank Lions Hall, which donates the space for Dumas to assemble, ice and decorate the confection. Dumas said her favourite part of the job is seeing the completed cake. In the afternoon, the B.C. Ambulance Service picks up Dumas and the cake and brings them over to Memorial Park.

“The ambulance is the only thing big enough that is air conditioned,” said Thordarson, who noted air conditioning is necessary to keep the cake from melting. At 2:55 p.m. Brooklyn Schell will lead the singing of O Canada. Municipal, provincial and federal politicians have been invited to cut and serve the cake to the waiting crowd.

There is always plenty of cake to go around and those who don’t get strawberries on their cake can get a serving of strawberries on the side. The Canada Day evening concerts have a country theme, with the Pam Ferens Band at 7 p.m., followed by tributes to Garth Brooks tribute and Alan Jackson.

Okanagan Day marks end of Westside Daze By BARB AGUIAR Westside Weekly

Learn about the early history of the Okanagan at Sukanaqin Sxelxalt from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 3. Pronounced sookanakane skullhelt, it means Okanagan Day. It is an opportunity for people to learn the culture of

the Okanagan people, who have lived in harmony with the land for thousands of years. Visit the Tepee Village to watch demonstrations of traditional fishing techniques and implements. Try your hand at flint knapping, making hemp rope or a tule mat. See examples of pictographs found on rocks throughout the

interior and then chose a rock and paint your own design on it. There will be crafts and activities for children. Watch a stick game demonstration called stalalkum in the Okanagan language. A hiding and guessing game, stalalkum involves two different teams, a set of bones and drumming.

On the main stage, entertainment will showcase Okanagan culture with the High Mountain drum group from Merritt, dancers, hand drummers as well as the telling of captikw or creation stories, sacred instructions on how to live on the land. New this year will be naxaxaitkw — also known as Ogopogo. Ogopogo is a recent nickname for this sacred water being that has been part of the Okanagan culture for thousands of years, said Pamela Barnes, who organizes Okanagan Day with her husband, Grouse. Children will be able to participate in the presentation, which will include a naxaxaitkw costume — much like that of a Chinese dragon with a mask. There is enough room in the body of the large costume for kids to join in. While listening to the story of naxaxaitkw, people will learn about respect for Okanagan Lake, respect for water and its importance to all people. “That lake is not ours, it is naxaxaitkw’s home and we need to remember that when we enter or when we use water from there,” said Barnes. “These are lessons that we as humans need to remember. We’ve forgotten it all. We think everything is ours.” Every year, the stage performances end with the friendship dance and everyone in the audience is asked to join in. Barnes said the Tepee Village is set up on Saturday night. Those who are interested in seeing how the tepees go up are welcome to come and watch and even help if they like. Along with Okanagan Day, Westside Daze organizers are encouraging a multicultural showcase which will include a traditional Chinese dance demonstration by Jessica Yue from 2 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Yue will then perform the dance on stage from 2:30 to 2:45 p.m. The end of Okanagan Day at 4 p.m. signals the end to Westside Daze for another year.
