Your Road to Better Health Starts at Home
Fran Drescher’s been in our living rooms for generations. She recently hosted Showtime’s standup comedy special called Funny Women of a Certain Age, she has a new sitcom in 2020 on NBC called Indebted & The Nanny comes into our homes with marathon airings on COZI TV. Fran is also in our homes in a healthy way, in her interview, she has advice on how to detox your home & live in a safer environment. Fran’s Annual Cancer Schmancer Cabaret Cruise sets sail around New York Harbor on June 24th & she talked with us about the event, being cancer free for nearly two decades & how you can improve the quality of your life.
This is your 19th year of wellness and the 5th Annual Cancer Schmancer Cruise. It’s become a Summer staple in New York on the Hornblower Infinity Yacht where guests enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a gourmet organic dinner, a live show & meeting you. The entertainment has Broadway’s best performers & this year features two comedians from your recent special on Showtime, tell us about some of the artists appearing.
I met both Carole Montgomery and Kerri Louise on Funny Women of a Certain Age on Showtime, and they are so talented and so funny that I had to ask them to perform on the cruise. I’m very excited about adding some comedy to this year’s mix. We also have the legendary Billy Stritch who’s collaborated with everyone from Liza Minnelli to Tony Bennett. He’s just an amazing performer. I could go on about all of them. Brenda Braxton, Deborah Cox, Marti Gould Cummings, Kim Maresca, Christine Pedi, Joan Ryan, and of course my gay ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson is back again this year. We are blessed and grateful to have so much incredible talent support our cause.
You’re an expert advocate for organic foods, your recipes are very popular online & would make for a great organic cookbook. The Cabaret Cruise lets people who don't normally eat organically, feast on a delicious gourmet organic dinner. How do you choose the menu?
First of all, we’re incredibly fortunate to have the support of Hornblower New York. They donate the ship, the food, the crew — everything, and they are so accommodating of our needs for healthy, organic, non-GMO, etc. They let us know what’s available locally and in season and make suggestions. So it all starts with what’s fresh and available, and the chefs are so creative. They make it very easy. In addition to educating people about eating properly and even how using the right toothpaste & deodorant can improve their health, you have a roadmap for detoxing their home. What are the best first steps to detoxing a home? The first step would be to go to CancerSchmancer.org. We have a wonderful Detox Your Home Party Kit that you can download for free. We provide a party planner and games that teach the basics of what to avoid in the products you buy. Our website also carries the EWG consumer guides, so you can look up the safety ratings of products you use now, and if those happen to be not so good, you can search for less toxic ones. But there are some very simple steps you can do right now like get rid of the plastic as much as possible. And stay away from nonstick cookware. Avoid fluoride in toothpaste and aluminum in deodorant. And remember that you don’t have to be perfect. Just take a few small steps today, then a few more tomorrow, and pretty soon the detox lifestyle will become second nature. Scan for CancerSchmancer.org & learn how to Detox Your Home
‘Be The Change’, your short film starring Jamie Foxx, Jeff Bridges and yourself, is a huge hit on social media & people can see it on CancerSchmancer.org. It’s empowering the next generation to learn about saving their health & saving their planet. How can today’s teenagers enlighten their parents about incorporating the Cancer Schmancer mantra of “Check, Choose & Change.” I’m so glad you brought that up because one of the most shocking statistics is that today’s generation is the first one predicted not to live as long as their parents, and this video is part of our mission not to make that a self-fulfilling prophecy. So the video instructs young people to check labels for harmful ingredients, choose healthy, ecofriendly ones and become the change by using their enormous purchasing power to dictate responsible manufacturing trends. We educate, motivate, and activate young people to be the agents of positive change. So young people will take those lessons home and become positive role models not just for their parents but for everyone in their lives.
What’s your favorite part of the Cabaret Cruise? That’s such a difficult question because, of course, I love the delicious food. And sailing around the NYC harbor is just gorgeous. I love the cabaret show itself and seeing all of that outstanding talent on one stage. And also meeting all of the guests is so much fun for me. We have some people who come every year, and it’s wonderful to see them, and of course, the new faces. But I guess if I had to choose, it’s just so rewarding and fulfilling to be part of the experience, this sense of community where people come together to do something good, to help our organization fight cancer and chronic illness. There’s nothing better.

The Deets On: Daemon Natural Products for Men & their Founder/CEO, Steven Henao-Escobar Tell us how being in the Army & having a career in Investment banking led you to create Daemon, your line of natural men’s products. When I left the Army I was frustrated walking down the men’s products aisle that I couldn’t find a brand which made sense to me with their product philosophy & even with their packaging. I didn’t fit their target markets, they were all very ‘boyish’ brands.
I couldn’t find a sophisticated brand for men where you can receive all natural products using ethically sourced ingredients & also have thoughtful packaging. During from my years in Investment Banking, I did analysis on hundreds of products in regards to their marketing & packaging.
How did you learn to make the actual products, which ingredients to use & the process it takes? My girlfriend is an expert formulator and she’s been in the green beauty business for 10 years. We first started formulating together 2 years ago & launched this year.
You tested & launched Daemon with the help of some former soldiers, why them?
One of the first things I said was let’s market it to guys I know who would’ve had a similar experience. Guys who left the Military, Officers, the Special Operations Community - who believe it or not, aren’t status quo people. They challenge life. That’s part of the identity I wanted to build behind the Daemon brand. The beard & face scrub & also the Sandalwood oil are unique.
Most beard oil just treats the hair with conditioner. That’s the wrong approach. With Daemon beard oil, we purposely put face oil in there because you have to treat the skin layer, in order to have healthy beard hair. Explain how you’ve also made Daemon hypoallergenic. We simplify the formula using all natural ingredients, none of it is synthetic. As people we are made to interact with nature, not to interact with synthetic chemicals. We use only high quality ingredients. Our scrub is 100% organic honey. It has very expensive essential oils like Sandalwood & Rose, it’s all cold pressed to get drops of oil. In ancient times, that oil was rare & frequently used by Kings. That’s what we want our users to feel like when they use Daemon products, this is what if feels to live like a King!

Meet Redwood Honey Redwood Honey are the definition of Americana music. With a sound steeped in Rock, Blues & R&B, they were a natural fit as the opening act this year for Eddie Money. After hearing the band’s debut album, “Wandering Mind”, he brought Redwood Honey on the road & overnight, the Boston based band was opening for Eddie Money.
While Redwood Honey’s members are from different parts of the Country, the band shares a common bond. They all met while attending Boston’s acclaimed Berklee School of Music. The band has a busy Summer on the road & check their website for upcoming dates. The single, “Rising Son”, is being used by HDNet Movies, as the soundtrack for their ‘Summer of Westerns.’ Check out Redwood Honey’s debut album, Wandering Mind, on Spotify Visit redwoodhoney.com

just offstage with
Mark Serritella The title of this column is just off stage so in the spirit of things, How do you feel about the last set you did? Felt great about the last set I did. Comedy Store in LA. Main Room. Sold Out. Was given a gift from God of a weird dude sitting alone in the front row. That’s always amazing...to decipher how he wound up there. One thing I love asking other comedians is what do you like to listen to? What song or album reminds you of being out on the road? Keeps you awake behind the wheel? Makes you miss home? Pumps you up before a show? I like the song ‘All of the Lights’ by Kanye West, especially on the way through Hollywood, where there are so many lights; billboards and glass pipes. Touring nationally you’re obviously on the road a lot. Do you still enjoy it? I enjoy the road as long as I’m with comedians I like. Like most comics, I never want to be staying in a motel in a town I’ve never heard of...not only is the environment depressing but they probably will hate my comedy too. Best comedy of all time? Best comedy of all time... hmm…tough. I like a lot. The Royal Tenenbaums Kingpin There’s Something About Mary Tommy Boy Caddy Shack The Darjeeling Limited Black Sheep Almost Heroes (underrated) But if you held a water gun to my head... I’d say The Royal Tenenbaums.
As comics, we all have moments in our careers where we thinking of throwing in the towel. But instead of diving into the negative, at what point in your career did you think, “This is it. I’m in it for the long haul.” I’ve never once thought about throwing in the towel. I have nothing else going on.
