Cyber Monday continues into week By Michelle Corbet

news@dailyhelmsman.com Between classes Monday, students found themselves in computer labs eager to check off their holiday shopping lists with Cyber Monday deals. Shop.org conducted a survey that anticipated 129.2 million Americans would shop on Cyber Monday, a 6.4 million increase from shoppers last year. While some Cyber Monday deals lasted throughout the day or for a few hours, others will continue until Dec. 1, so there is still time to find deals on the World Wide Web. Bradley Gilliland, freshman engineering technology major, and Daniel Brewer, freshman computer engineering major, purchased PC games. “It’s called the Autumn Sale,” Gilliland said. “It’s a special right now with big-name games at 50 to 75 percent off. It will go on for about a week.” Brewer said he prefers shopping on Cyber Monday to Black Friday because he can avoid the crowds and doesn’t have to get up early to get a great deal. WUMR “The Jazz Lover” Christmas radiothon on air this weekend By Kelsie Carter

news@dailyhelmsman.com “Jazz for the Holidays,” a radiothon fundraiser, will be hosted this weekend by the Mid-South’s only exclusively jazz radio station, WUMR. Chris Davis, program director for the University of Memphis station, said people will be able to hear jazz versions of classic Christmas songs, and that it will be a “unique listening experience.” The radiothon begins Thursday at 9:17 a.m. and ends Sunday at 9:17 p.m. Leroy Dorsey, chair of the department of communications, chose the times to reflect the station’s frequency, 91.7. Davis said it is a reccurring theme to promote the station. “[The radiothon] will allow us to

Davis said the station is trying to “keep the frequency in people’s minds.” Pledges can be made by phone at 901-678-4000 or online at wumr.memphis.edu. “We just decided to allow people to give whatever they are able to give,” Davis said. In the past, the donation goal was created to cover expenses due to the gap between what WUMR gets from the state and what it needs to operate. This year, the station is focusing on trying to make continuous improvements to keep it moving forward, Davis said. n

They’ve made their lists and checked them twice, and now it is up to the University of Memphis and the Salvation Army to make sure everything is there. For 22 years, the Loewenberg School of Nursing has sponsored the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program that brings underprivileged children and seniors the Christmas they can’t afford on their own. According to the Salvation Army website, recipients are screened individually to determine their needs. The wish lists are then given to “allow adopters the joys of personalized shopping.” “Salvation Army has an angel tree event where they go through, interview and select families and individuals who have financial difficulties, and they enroll them in this program,” said Jean McIvor, clinical associate professor at the School of Nursing. The information was sent to campus organizations at the beginning of the semester, but donations can be turned in up to 2 p.m. today at Newport Hall. Once the “angels” were selected, participants signed up for gifts they needed or desired. “A lot of the kids ask for a bicycle or clothes,” said Sheila Hall, assistant dean of Student Affairs at the School of Nursing. After the nursing school received the specific dates from the Salvation Army, forms and emails were sent throughout campus to invite new and returning donators to participate in the program. There is no price limit to the gifts the kids and seniors can ask for, but offices and organizations

Army stores the gifts in its warehouse. “The best thing about it is the dignity of the families is protected,” Hall said. Parents can go to the Salvation Army warehouse and pick up their kids’ gifts, and in the past have even been able to get wrapping paper. “They’ve got everything to give them total ownership,” Hall said. At that point, the parents can sign the gifts with their names or Grail’ on Blu-ray for $9.99.” Target is promoting Cyber Week — seven days of deals ending on Dec. 1. Customers who spend $50 online will receive free shipping and certain purchases include a free gift card. Clark said he saw good deals and thought about buying a few things but didn’t because he didn’t need anything that badly. “I’m saving my money for tuition for next semester,” he said.n

Bird is the word.

Where do the Tigers go from here? By Bryan Heater

bheater@dailyhelmsman.com It was ugly. It was disappointing. It was, quite frankly, a disaster. There are hunHeater d re d s of words to describe the University of Memphis men’s basketball team’s performance in the Battle 4 Atlantis over Thanksgiving break, but no matter which way you spin it, the Tigers’ lackluster showing raised many questions about this team moving forward. After dropping games to two unranked teams, Virginia Commonwealth and Minnesota, and barely squeezing past Northern Iowa, the burning question is, “Where do the Tigers go from here?” For starters, they will have to stop handing out turnovers on a silver platter.

In three games in the Bahamas, Memphis turned the ball over a staggering 53 times, roughly 17.7 turnovers per game. To pile it on, Memphis is giving the ball up 15.6 times a game while dishing out 12.6 assists per game for a lowly 0.8 assists to turnover ratio. The myriad of turnovers led to quick and easy buckets in each game, forcing Memphis to play while trailing for much of the tournament. Against VCU’s full-court press, the Tigers seemed as though they had never seen anything like it. Junior guard Joe Jackson regressed back to his freshman year with seven giveaways on two assists and fouled out. Sophomore guard-forward Adonis Thomas scored the ball, but had six turnovers of his own to add to the misery in what was supposed to be an island paradise. If the Tigers are to have any chance to turn things around, they will have to take care of the ball. Period. They will also have to start

guarding the three-point line where opposing teams were given virtually all day to set up and take shots. VCU drained 13-22 from long range, Minnesota shot a comfortable 42.9 percent and Northern Iowa hit seven. Every time Memphis made a run to get back in the game, opposing players simply went to the no-Tiger zone — the threepoint line — to nail another three and deflate Memphis’ momentum. When you get down to the nitty-gritty, the fact of the matter is the Tigers have failed in the fundamental areas of the game that are so critical to a team’s success. Is it that this team was simply held to too high of expectations? Pastner said Monday that could be the case, but then what should we expect? Instead of taking a business vacation, the Tigers took a vacation from basketball. Whether or not they check back in is solely up to them. This team has all the talent in the world, but talent alone will not fix the problem. n

How do you react to the idea of the God who reveals Himself in the Bible as the Creator of the universe? You are probably not indifferent to this question. You are either comforted by it or strongly resistant to it. It is obvious that both in the macro world of astronomy and in the minuscule realm of microbiology there is unmistakable evidence of intelligent design. Yet many people go to great lengths to reject the obvious. Why is this? The most probable reason is that there are profound implications if one admits that behind intelligent design, there obviously has to be a designer. This designer would ultimately have to be a Creator. A Creator has the power and right to do what He will with His creation. If among His creation there are intelligent creatures, He has the right to command how they will live. If they fail to meet His requirements, He has the right and power to sit as their Judge. This is the explanation for the irrational attempt to deny an ultimate designer. That creator/designer must be answered to as ultimate Judge. For those who desire to live autonomous lives, but who have nagging, well-founded suspicions that this Judge does indeed exist, it is understandable why some would go to great lengths to remove the creator from their thoughts.

End-of-season surprise for rugby senior By Meagan Nichols

sports@dailyhelmsman.com As the captain of the University of Memphis Rugby Club handed out jerseys to the starters before the senior day match, he paused when he reached senior Ryan Phillips. Captain Kian Koleini appeared to be one jersey short. He was wrapping up his speech when someone emerged from around the corner holding Phillips’ missing No. 5 jersey. Phillips’ face appeared shocked as his dad, Bob, just back from Afghanistan where he served as a contractor, gave his son the jersey and a long-overdue hug. Phillips had not seen his dad since July. “It was pretty special, not only to Ryan but for everyone that loves Ryan,” head coach Richard Cole said. Phillips and his fellow teammates translated the pregame surprise into dominance on the field, taking down Mississippi State University 44-0. With his dad watching, Phillips scored the first try of the game, his first points of the season. All of the seniors scored in the

final match, and the Tigers ended the fall season with a 14-2 record. “The team continues to improve quickly in all aspects of the game,” Cole said. “The boys have gotten stronger and tougher.” The inception of the Memphis rugby team was in 1983. After a brief hiatus, the club was kick started again in 1996. Cole has been at the helm of the team since August 2011. A member of the South Independent Rugby Conference, the team recently decided to move up a division from DII-AA to DI-AA. “The team improved to the point that it deserved better competition,” Cole said. Anyone is welcome to join the rugby team. Players are placed on either the first team or the developmental team. Each player has to pay an annual cost of $500 to help cover expenses. The spring season begins Jan. 26 with a nonconference game against Vanderbilt University. The team is set to play two matches each weekend throughout the season. Koleini said the team’s goal is to win a conference championship and

a lot of community support,” Koleini said. As a way to give back to the community that has rallied around the Memphis program, the club plans

to work with local inner city schools that have rugby teams. “We want to come together as a team to support the community,” Koleini said. n

win at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Prairie View scored 42 points in the first half, holding Memphis to 18. Freshman Ariel Hearn contributed a career-high 16 points for the Tigers. Hearn was one of four Tigers to score double digits. Senior Nicole Dickson had 13, sophomore Ann Jones had 12 and junior Pa’Sonna Hope recorded 11. The Tigers tried to claw their way back in the game dur-

ing the second half, outscoring Prairie View 40-28, but the effort was not enough to undo the early damage inflicted by the Panthers. On the day, Memphis shot just more than 30.2 percent from two-point range and 18.8 percent from the three-point arch. Memphis will be back in action Friday when they hit the road to face off against East Tennessee State University. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. n
