Students take it to the wall for donations

Up ‘Til Dawn members took part in St. Jude’s letter writing event Wednesday, one of their biggest fundraisers of the year. Friday, the group will host a “to the wall” fundraiser, where members of the U of M community will be taped to a wall.

news@dailyhelmsman.com Up ‘Til Dawn will host a fundraiser Friday in front of the University Center called “To the Wall.” Up ‘Til Dawn is a registered student organization at the University of Memphis dedicated to raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During “To the Wall,” members of Up ‘Til Dawn will tape people
to a wall. Cassie Pennington, a morale captain for Up ‘Til Dawn, said she wanted to do something a little different for a fundraiser. “I mean, how often do you really get to see someone taped to a wall,” Pennington, an undecided sophomore, said. “I thought it’d be fun and appealing to people as they’re walking by before the pep rally.” Pennington, who wasn’t a member last year, said she was introduced to the group at its finale
fundraiser where she was inspired by the patient speakers and the amount of money the organization had raised so far, which at the time was $105,328. “This is really important, because it takes $1.8 million a day to run St. Jude. We’ve really made it our mission to let the patients of St. Jude know that the University of Memphis is here for them,” Pennington said. This year Up ‘Til Dawn plans to surpass last year’s donations by rais-
ing their goal to $150,000. “This event is one of our sidefundraising events. We have a few primary ones throughout the year, and this is one of our smaller ones,” John Campbell, a faculty advisor for the organization and the University’s senior coordinator of leadership programs, said. “We have three volunteers, myself included, who are willing to be taped to a wall.” Along with Campbell, two students will also be duct-taped to
UC columns—Ricky Kirby, president of the Student Government Association, and Dixon Williams, an UTD executive board member. “I’ve only been told that no matter what I’m going to be taped to a wall. It seems fun to me, and it’s for a good cause,” Williams, a senior marketing major, said. “Who can really say they’ve been taped to a wall?” During the annual “Letter
“Microsoft was transitioning all the customers that used the live@edu service over to Office 365, and this is actually the interface that goes along with their Exchange 2013 email servers.” As with most change, responses and reactions vary. “The design is visually very confusing to me,” English professor Cathy Dice said. “It’s hard for me to tell what messages have been read and which ones haven’t, and there is just so much stuff on the screen that my eyes don’t know where to look.”
Jenny Rice, a 21-year-old accounting major, agrees. “I don’t like it as much as I like the old one,” she said. “It’s harder to see if your emails have been read.” However, some like Kristen Parker, a 19-year-old teaching major, was unaware of the change. “A number of people that have used it like the new interface,” Weber said. “However, we have received some complaints about it, either due to where they are accessing it from, or that they were really used to the old interface and are
thrown off by the new upgraded look and feel.” Despite the complaints, most of the reported issues are not long term. “From our standpoint, there weren’t a lot of lingering issues,” Weber said. He cited issues with specific Internet providers and certain browsers as the main source of the complaints. “We have engaged Microsoft in those small cases, and we are working those users to trouble shoot
with them on an individual basis.” It took about two business days to fully complete the switch, and Weber believes that in a lot of respects, the new interface is an improvement. “Before if you used Safari, Firefox or Chrome, you got this light version that didn’t have all the features,” Weber said. “I know a lot of people that don’t want to use Internet Explorer, and so this new version gives everyone the same experience regardless of what browser they use.”

Email interface leaves some on campus confused
By Patrick Lantrip
news@dailyhelmsman.com Author Robert Gallagher once said that change is inevitable — except in a vending machine. Recently, the University of Memphis underwent a change of its own — that doesn’t involve vending machines — it updated its campus email systems. “It was mandated by Microsoft,” said Jon Weber, interim director of Enterprise Infrastructure.

Writing Party” Wednesday, students sent letters to friends and family asking them to donate to St. Jude, and Campbell said he hopes that this fundraiser has just as good of a turnout. “This is a new idea for this group, and I’m excited to see what the turnout is and how much we can raise to benefit St. Jude. Volleyball to wrap up home stand By Meagan Nichols
sports@dailyhelmsman.com The University of Memphis volleyball squad will play at home Friday as part of a doubleheader with the women’s basketball team. The basketball team will take to the court at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse at 4 p.m. against East Tennessee State and volleyball will follow at 7 p.m. when the Tigers face Temple (16-7). With a 12-13 overall record this season, head Memphis volleyball coach April Jauregui said the team would obviously like to have a better record and said the team had four or five matches when they had good chances to win. “We are a few games away from having a completely different season,” she said. The Tigers will enter Friday’s game against Temple coming off the 3-0 loss to Louisville (16-7) on Sunday. The game was the third time this season the Tigers were held to zero and the second loss to the Cardinals. The teams battled each other on Sept. 27 when Memphis fell 3-1. “There is a reason why they (Louisville) are first and 11-0 in conference,” Jauregui said. “They kinda have just rolled over everybody.” Friday’s matchup will also mark the second meeting between Memphis and Temple. The Tigers collected the 3-0 loss to Temple in the Philidelphia, City of Brotherly Love, on Oct. 4. Memphis will look to even the

score this week. Jauregui said the Memphis team has worked all week on Friday’s game plan and said playing at home this time around will have its advantages. “Mainly not having to travel,” she said. “The trip to Philadelphia was the farthest trip of the year, and we just have one match to focus on.” In the new American Athletic Conference, unlike in Conference USA, there is no end of the season conference tournament for volleyball. Jauregui said every match is important, and at this point, the team is just trying to stay motivated and finish strong. The American Athletic Conference volleyball media guide states: “The conference’s regular season champion will be rewarded with an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.” Friday will mark the final game in the three-match home stand at the Fieldhouse. The Tigers have seven games left in the 2013 season. With only three seniors on the roster, Jauregui said the future looks bright for Memphis volleyball and for the upcoming recruiting class. “I think we have the right chemistry on the court now, and the team is very capable.” Jauregui said she wanted to thank all of the fans who have supported the team this year and said she hopes to have another strong turnout at the doubleheader Friday.
