It’s no surprise that Desloge Chiropractic Health Center won Best of the Parkland 2023 for Best Chiropractor and received the top amount of votes for the entire contest.
The likely reason for Dr. Michael Essmyer and wife Cassie won the award for their practice is because they make sure every patient feels comfortable in their office.
“We value each and every patient and want them to make sure they have a positive experience,” said Dr. Essmyer. “I want them to feel like they’re family and that I’m giving them the care and time I would to my own loved ones.”
He said chiropractic care can be a nerve-wracking visit for some, and most people are in extreme pain during treatment. That’s why it’s very important that he offers peace of mind and comfort to his patients.
Dr. Essmyer opened his private practice in 2005. He offers a variety of services to provide treatment for his patients, including spinal manipulation to realign the bones and joints of patients of all ages; skeletal, muscular and nervous system disorders ranging from sports injuries, whiplash, sciatica, migraines and myofascial pain; electrotherapy that applies a gentle current of electricity into the affected area to reduce muscle spasms, inflammation, and relieve pain; ultrasound therapy, which uses sound to create heat deep inside muscles to increase blood flow and relaxation; and spinal traction, which utilizes a computerized table to apply traction to relieve pressure on the spine and decompress pinched nerves.
In addition to physical treatment, Dr. Essmyer provides important lifestyle education. This includes nutritional, exercise and strengthening advice, ergonomic recommendations, diets, and postural support.
“In fact,” he said, “poor posture at work is a leading cause of back and neck pain.”
Dr. Essmyer is in his 20th year in practice and 19th year in private practice. In that time, he has made countless lifelong friendships with many people who first started out as patients.
“I genuinely thank everyone who voted for our office, not only because of the care they received, but also because they feel like they’re part of our family,” he said. “Most of our patients know our family, and we know the same about them. We are humbled and greatly appreciate everyone.”
In his two decades of working in the chiropractic profession, Dr. Essmyer said he is compassionate and committed to help others lead healthier lives. He communicates with his patients and listens to their concerns.
“I know that with my own personal healthcare providers, I look for positivity, patience, listening skills and responsiveness,” he said. “I feel these are great qualities that put patients at ease and inspire confidence, so I feel it’s important to exhibit those same qualities.”
Dr. Essmyer utilizes a team of skilled physicians from various fields because he knows patient care isn’t always limited to chiropractic care alone.
“Sometimes co-management is best for individual needs,” he explained. “I am not afraid to refer patients to physical therapy or orthopedic physicians for co-management because my goal is always to help my patients improve their health.”
Dr. Essmyer takes great pride in caring for his patients.
“When a patient who has been to several other chiropractors before tells me that they feel like I gave him the best adjustment they ever had, it makes me feel good,” he said. “We also appreciate feedback about our friendliness and how we run our schedule on time so patients don’t sit long in our waiting room.”

Iron County Medical Center (ICMC) has been voted the 2023 Best Hospital of the Parkland.
Over the last few years the hospital has made notable strides in its services, including the beautiful addition that will be the new location of the clinics.
ICMC CEO Dr. Bruce Harrison said, the growth and stability of the hospital can be attributed to the great team of leaders who make every day possible. He praised the hospital’s team and its ability to overcome challenges, resulting in the recognition as the 2023 Best Hospital of the Parkland.
Since Dr. Harrison took his position roughly 6 months ago, the focus has been on creating a cohesive team which is committed to providing exceptional care to its patients. As part of this mission, the executive team of CNO Billie Jo Russel, CFO Kayla Chamberlain, Director of Facility Management Jim Broombaugh, Senior Executive Assistant/Medical Staff Coordinator Christy Johnson, and Harrison was established.
“Having a strong leadership team is essential to ensuring that we can provide the best care possible,” Harrison said. “Our team is committed to creating a cohesive and collaborative environment, where every member can contribute to this shared goal.”
Over the years, the hospital has overcome its fair share of challenges. These include recovering from a bankruptcy, surviving a global pandemic, and of course the current nursing shortage.
“Nobody said things would be easy, but making sure the people in this rural community have a hospital to not only care for them but one that they can be proud of is worth the effort,” Harrison
said. “At ICMC we understand the importance of having a quality hospital in our community and we are committed to providing compassionate care, close to home.”
The new addition to the hospital’s building is just one way ICMC is working toward even better care for its patients. The new location for the clinics will be opened later this year, and it is expected to improve the overall patient experience. The new building will provide more space and will be conveniently located within the hospital.
Dr. Harrison said he believes the new addition will enable the hospital to provide more services and space, which will help the hospital to serve the community better.
ICMC may be a rural facility, but its list of services is anything but small.
“Who says you have to travel to get the care you need,” Harrison said. “At ICMC we offer a lot of the same services you would get at a bigger hospital. We
are just a lot closer to home.”
ICMC offers services such as surgery, podiatry, radiology, cardiology, wound care, primary care, cardiac rehab, women’s health, physical therapy, gastroenterology, pharmacy infusions, occupational therapy, laboratory services, emergency services, respiratory services, ENT, telehealth and more. There is also a financial assistance program for those who need it.
Harrison said, this recognition, especially since it is voted on by the community, is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to its patients. The hospital’s team has worked tirelessly to overcome challenges and improve the quality of healthcare it provides.
“We are honored to be recognized as the 2023 Best Hospital of the Parkland,” Harrison said. “However, we know that our work is never done. We will continue to work hard, and we look forward to serving our community for many years to come.”

Hoods Home Center earned top honors yet again in the Best of the Parkland 2023 contest. The business won Top 2 Finalist as a favorite in the Home Improvement and Flooring Store.
Hoods Marketing Manager Brandi Richards said the home improvement center keeps winning in the Best of the Parkland contest each year because they make customers their first priority.

Pettus Automotive Group earns multiple awards in the Best of the Parkland contest, and this year is no exception. The business earned awards for Best Auto Dealer (New), Best Auto Dealer (Preowned), Best Oil Change Service and Favorite Auto Repair Mechanical. Joe Pettus purchased his first dealership in DeSoto from Talbert Ford about a decade ago. He is a North County graduate and has always had a passion for cars and trucks. Arcadia Valley Soap Co. has earned the Best of the Parkland award for Best Specialty ShopArcadia Valley for the seventh year in a row.
The small business, located in the heart of Arcadia Valley in Ironton, is owned by Colin and Debra Hendron. The couple originally opened the business in 2012 in a tiny 200-square-foot building and then restored the building where the shop has been located since 2015.
Arcadia Valley Soap Co. specializes in handcrafting artisan soaps along with other body care products like lotions, bath bombs and more. Two additional product lines, MoSoap and Botanical Earth, are also part of the Ironton shop and were founded in 2001.
The Arcadia Valley soaps are
fragrant and colorful, while MoSoap products are based on Debra’s grandmother’s old-fashioned soaps and salves. Botanical Earth products are vegan, all-natural and created for people, pets and home. All of the items are made right inside the Ironton store.
Debra’s focus for her products is dedicated to showcasing the natural beauty and history of the region through her handmade soap and personal-care products.
“It’s crucial for me to treat each customer with the same respect and care that I would want for myself,” said Debra. “Even though there are many other soapmakers selling handmade soap, I believe the key factor that sets me apart is the quality of customer service.”
The shop has a loyal following of soap aficionados who rave about and recommend the
products. One fan-favorite is the signature fragrance AVS 119, with its name inspired by the business’s location. Other favorites include all-natural essential oil laundry soap, lip balms and the old-fashioned Basic Lye Soap.
Debra completes each unique product with perfect packaging that includes custom-created labels.
“I take pride in my cute little shop and know it sets my business apart from others,” she said. “I am lucky to be a caretaker of this adorable pink granite shop while handcrafting soap.”

Parkland Monument, located at 5425 Highway 32 in Farmington, won the Best of the Parkland award for Best Monument Company for the third year in a row.
Jeff Owens and his family purchased Parkview Monument in 1997, which was located on Weber Road at the time. The business had been a functioning monument company since 1927.
In 2003, the family purchased their second – and current – location where they eventually moved all production.
According to Owens, he believes that Parkland Monument Co. is the only monument company that engraves, etches and produces their own monuments in-house.
“I do all the designing right here for the customer,” he said. “We install the monuments ourselves and take on the project from start to finish.”
He said the business provides personalized service and knowledge which has been acquired through experience over the years.
“The fact that we have the ability to do everything ourselves provides the customer with complete flexibility of how we can design and produce their memorial,” he said.
Owens said any salesperson can sell a monument out of a catalog, but he can fully design and customize a memorial stone at Parkland Monument Co., Inc.
“Part of my job is to suggest things and inform our customers of what their options are,” he said. “I am a good informationalist because I present the information so customers can make educated decisions, that also factor in their budget, etc.”
According to Owens, memorialization is Parkland Monument Co.’s primary business. Products also include yard stones, granite benches, memorial pavers and more. In fact, the business has completed several paver projects throughout the area.

The Shed Vapes has done it again. For the third year in a row, the business earned Best Parkland Vape Shop. The business also earned another award: Best Specialty Shop-Farmington.
The Shed Vapes, located on Hillsboro Road, is a wholesale vapor shop that started in Stan Janis’ kitchen in 2018 before moving to a small building on his property.
The business celebrates its five-year anniversary this month. Co-owners Janis and Jordan Wood moved to a brand-new building twice the size of their former location. The extra space allowed them to expand their inventory to carry more disposables than any other vape shop in the area. They included an old general store countertop which was built in the 1940s and purchased from Forever Antiques. They also added a deck with chairs, large parking lot, and an area with two church pews where customers can set up their vape equipment.
“We do most of our shopping locally and try to support local businesses,” said Janis. “We hired local people to do the painting and insulating of our new building. If we see one of our customers advertising their business, we try to utilize their services in some way.”
Janis and Wood have a simple mission: to help people quit smoking and find alternatives to tobacco at an affordable price.
“We are wholesale to the public, which is about half the cost of a retail vape shop, and we only sell quality products,” said Janis.
The Shed Vapes sells their products for little to no profit, which allows people to have an inexpensive option to help them quit smoking.
Any profit the store receives is used to help area law enforcement agencies, fire departments, military charities and other community groups with fundraising. They recently purchased thermal imaging cameras for the Park Hills police and fire departments; supported Shop with a Cop; donated money for the improvement of the St. Francois County Raceway; and helped a family member travel to see his younger brother who was going through cancer treatments. The business is purchasing a thermal imaging camera for the local
parks service and is sponsoring the St. Francois County Fair and the Country Days’ marketplace.
“It’s all about giving back to the community,” said Janis.
The staff is adding a pickleball court and vaping lounge with picnic tables, TV, gaming system and snacks.
“We are fair with people on cost,” said Janis, “and we teach new customers how to use equipment and will help them with an alternative to smoking, eventually working with customers to quit vaping as well.”
Janis said the staff prioritizes their customer service by teaching and supporting their customers through their journey to a safer alternative to tobacco products.
The Shed Vapes carries more than 200 brands and flavors of ejuice and the latest in vaping equipment.
Janis and Wood are grateful for the support they’ve received from their faithful customers.
“Thank you for the votes and for the confidence and support of The Shed Vapes,” said Janis. “It means a lot to us and is very much appreciated. It also helps a lot of people. We are here for
the community, and we hope that we help them in their journey with a safer alternative to tobacco products.”
The Shed Vapes staff includes Janis and Wood; Gage Lee as store manager; and employees Mikel Blount and Logan Johnson.
The staff plans to celebrate their fifth anniversary with customers at their July Customer Appreciation Day and grand reopening.
