How to Choose... Continued Adult Education

How to your local Choose guide

No one stops learning. It is a lifelong process. Continuing education can introduce you to new skills, ideas and maybe even a different career. Schools and universities around the country offer a wide array of courses for adults and recent college graduates. When you want to update your skills or your job requires ongoing training, continuing education can be a smart choice. REQUIRED TRAINING

When you need to fulfill a training requirement for your career, continuing education can be particularly helpful. In the medical industry, for example, you might need training to understand new developments and techniques. If you need courses for this reason, ask yourself two questions: Does the course fill the requirements, and is it convenient for your schedule? Make sure the course will fulfill your obligation. In many cases, the instructor’s background and course curriculum need to be

very specific in order to earn or renew a certification. Verify with your employer to be certain you have the right course. Many adult education courses are offered on nights during the weekdays so that working people can attend.

CHOOSING AN ADULT EDUCATION LOCATION

When researching where to continue your education or learn a new skill, look for an establishment that has a reputation for excellence and competence in many fields. Ensure that it has a well developed program of testing

and guidance and small classes that have an excellent student teacher ratio to aide in a more individualized and one on one environment.

How to Choose... an ATV, Side x Side,

or Motorcycle Dealer

Whether you are a novice or an experienced pro, finding a good dealer will put you zooming down the right path. Not only do ATV, Side x Side, and Motorcycle dealers offer machines for purchase, they can also act as an information resource and community hub. 1. DECIDE ON THE TYPE OF ATV, SIDE X SIDE, OR MOTORCYCLE When you are in the market to purchase any of these, your first step is to figure out which style of machine you want. There are many styles of all these types of machines but most dealers specialize in only 1 or 2. A Sport Bike has a sleek look. Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha make sport bikes. Tour bikes are best for long trips. These classic-looking bikes feature comfortable seats and space for drinks, bags and other items. They usually have large bodies and engine displacements. All of these manufacturers offer some type of touring style bike. They also offer off-road bikes for the outdoor adventurer or off-road racing.

2. RESEARCH DEALERS

Start researching dealers by looking online. Especially if there isn’t a local dealer in your area, this might give you an idea where the best and closest are to visit. Let the type and style of machine you want guide you toward the right dealer.

Do they offer new and used equipment? Do they have in house financing? Ask about their hours of operation and maintenance/service process. Note any dealers who are unavailable for your call. If a company is difficult to contact, that is a warning sign.

3. CHECK THE REVIEWS

Once you have a list of prospective dealers, check customer reviews. It will tell you about the quality of customer service you will receive from customers who have had experience dealing with the company before you shop there.

Reviews also inform you about the reliability of products in the store. Avoid any dealership that has shoddy products, too high of prices or bad customer service. Look closer at dealers with strong customer service reputations. As with any business, read these reviews carefully. Understand that normally, more unhappy customers leave reviews than happy ones. Satisfied customers are enjoying the afternoons riding their machines.

4. VISIT THE DEALERSHIP Once you have narrowed your list, it is time to visit locations and begin shopping.

All NeW!

2016 POLARIS GENERAL

If you find a machine you like, speak with a salesperson. Focus on how he or she is talking to you. Note their knowledge level, kindness, honesty and quick service. The most essential quality is trust. If you don’t feel like you should trust the dealership or salespeople, walk away.

5. CHOOSE YOUR DEALER

Once you feel as though you have found a good dealership, inspect their bikes. Sometimes, a dealership will permit a trusted mechanic to check the vehicle before you purchase it. If you have chosen a good shop, they will accept your request. Once you have found a good dealership and a machine that fits your needs, that is in excellent mechanical condition (if used), you can feel at peace with your purchase.

How to Choose... a Bank

You work hard for your money. But do you work as hard at selecting the individual or institution that watches your money? How your money is handled may influence where you choose to house your funds. Not all banks are the same. Do you value quality customer service? Is a convenient location important to you? Are modern technological banking services a must-have for your busy life? A community bank may be the place for you to call home. COST OF SERVICES

Community banks hold customer service as a highly regarded necessity. Good customer service extends to the topic of fees and services offered. Most locally owned banks offer the same array of services, from online bill payment to debit and credit cards or other electronic transactions, at a much lower cost than big banks. Studies show that small financial institutions also offer, on average, better interest rates on savings and better terms on credit cards and other loans. Ask to look at a fee schedule to determine if the benefits match the cost.

GROwInG YOuR LOCaL ECOnOmY

Small businesses, which create the majority of new jobs, depend heavily on local banks for financing. Although small and midsized banks control less than one-quarter of all bank assets, they account for more than half of all small business lending.

00 1

Meanwhile, big banks allocate relatively little of their resources to small businesses. The 20 largest banks devote only 18 percent of their commercial loan portfolios to small business. Ask around. You may be surprised how many local businesses are backed by community banks.

LOCaL DECISIOn-makInG

At local banks loan approvals and other key decisions are made by people who live in the community, have face-to-face relationships with their customers and understand local needs. Because of this personal knowledge, local financial institutions might be able to approve small business and other loans that big banks may reject. Looking for a loan? Take heart that your local loan officer and management team make the decisions that impact your community.

Ask to take a look at your institution’s financial statements or check out bank ratings on www.FDIC.gov.

COmmunITY COmmITmEnT

The success of a community bank is ultimately tied to the success of its community. The more the community prospers, the more the local bank benefits. This is why many local, hometown banks are heavily involved in their communities. In contrast, big banks are not always tethered to the places where they operate. Often, they use a community’s deposits to make investments in other regions or on Wall Street.

Most banks offer a variety of services. Whether you need to finance a home purchase, open a checking or savings account, get an auto loan or talk about financing a new small business, take the time to shop around. A positive experience with a trustworthy financial institution just may help you sleep a little better at night.

Ask to speak to a representative about local involvement in the community.

SuppORT pRODuCTIVE InVESTmEnT

The primary activity of nearly all community banks is to turn deposits into loans and other productive investments. Big banks devote a sizeable share of their resources to trading or other Wall Street activity that may generate big profits for the bank, but provide little economic or social value for the communities they serve. Community banks focus on more stable and local investment options. These sound investment practices promote the importance of future success not only for the financial institution but for the community as a whole.

Since 1954, First State Community Bank has been known for its friendly service, community involvement and sound lending decisions. FSCB is owned and operated by First State Bancshares, Inc., a financial services holding company based in Farmington, MO. FSCB is a full-service financial institution, with a variety of loan and deposit products and services. The bank also owns First State Insurance Agency (FSIA), a full-service independent insurance agency. Investment and brokerage services are available through First State Financial Management, Inc. (FSFM), a wholly owned subsidiary of First State Bancshares, Inc.

How to Choose... a Private School

How to your local Choose guide

If public schools are not for you and your children, you might want to consider a private school.

Now Enrolling

Parents send their students to private schools for many reasons. Ultimately, it is because they want the best education and believe a private school will help them succeed. Private schools can be a great option for families willing to make the investment. Despite the perception, private schools vary in quality and scope. Here are some things to consider when choosing a private school in your area.

The Values

Choosing the right school will be the most important decision you make for your children. Come see the difference that choosing quality can make.

One of the reasons to send your children to a private school is to reinforce a set of values — both from the educators and faculty members who teach them and from the other students your child will be growing up with. Shared values can be a powerful thing. That means the first step is finding a private school that values the same things you do. You’ll want to know whether the school is associated with a certain religion or denomination, of course, but also look in depth at how much religious teaching is done at the school. Some private schools include religious classes and worship services as part of the curriculum; others are less formal about their religious affiliation, focusing on providing a very high-quality secular education and less on a specific church or belief. Some private schools aren’t affiliated with a religion at all.

The specific school you pick can have big implications on which opportunities will open up to your child later in life, from college entrance to extracurricular activities such as music and sports.

You should also pay close attention to both the extracurricular activities that are available now and the ones that will be available in the future.

Thankful for blessings • Student Enrollment Growth • Altar • Bus and graphics • Piano, music stands, guitars • Boys basketball uniforms • Choir trip to Fox Theater Boys Basketball

Your third-grade child may not think much about athletics right now, for example, but a soccer, football or basketball team could become very important to them as they get older. A private school that offers a lot of well-run extracurricular activities will open up more options for your child in the middle-school and highschool years. By looking closely at the values, staff, students and opportunities that are offered, the choice for your child’s education should become clear.

Whether the school uses a strict disciplinarian approach or a more laid-back style, you should be confident that your child will be in a safe, comfortable learning environment at all times. Watching how the students interact during and after school can give you some insights about it.

The sTaff Private schools can vary widely in the staff they employ. Some have credential requirements that go above and beyond what public schools require; others have looser requirements for education and training.

Now Enrolling

Parents of current or former students should be able to give you the inside scoop about any concerns that exist among the student population, so ask around. No school has perfect students, obviously, but some do a better job dealing with problems than others.

Keep in mind that values cannot be judged by written statements alone. Look at the way the school’s employees and students live their lives — including the school’s reputation in the community — to make your decision.

Again, the school’s reputation will tell you a lot — perhaps even more than paper credentials ever will — so ask around to see what people in your community think of the school’s teachers and administrators.

exc e l l e n c e • a c h i eve m e n t • c o m m i t m e n t

The sTudenTs Before you pick a private school, you should plan on making at least one in-person visit for a day. Sit in on a few classes and watch how the students behave and how the school’s staff deals with any discipline problems.

Ask if the school has any data about the percentage of its students that are accepted into college. Some private schools have a long track record of preparing students for prestigious universities later in life.

If it’s important to you, you should ask about the teaching staff’s credentials. Know where they went to college and what degrees they hold, along with whether they have any certificates and ongoing training on the courses they teach.

How to Choose... a Furniture/Mattress Store

How to your local Choose guide

Furniture gives your house a personality and pizazz. It communicates a message about who you are. Given the array of choices available these days, there has never been a better time to buy new furniture. No matter the size of your budget, choosing new seating, tables and accessories can make a big difference in your daily life. What is your particular and unique style? What do you value most in furniture? Here are some things to consider when shopping around for furniture or a mattress. QUALITY THAT LASTS

Look for a store that sells quality, long-lasting furniture. While inexpensive accessories can be bought cheaply and changed often, big furniture investments -- sofas, dining tables, and the like -- need to be purchased for the long term. That means putting solid construction before a pretty style. Solid construction isn’t always apparent at first glance. It should feel solid, not flimsy, of course. Beyond that, find out as much information as possible about the frame, materials, and what kind of warranty it comes with. A well-trained staff can inform you about their furniture, how they’re built and why the construction matters. The best stores have employees who act as

options. You might also think about getting a hypoallergenic mattress cover. When you are looking at actual mattress options, the following are popular choices: — Pillow top mattresses are famous for their softness; however, they do have levels of firmness. They also require a larger bottom sheet because the pillow top adds to their extra thickness. — Coil spring construction are great choices for people who want a firm mattress. This option has the ability to keep your spine aligned. Most mattress stores can show you samples of their product lines. Choose the best construction you can afford. —”Memory” or high-density foam or latex mattress are helpful if you have physical issues, such as skeletal pain or circulatory problems. This mattress conforms to the shape of the body. It also minimizes pressure points from the head, shoulders and hips.

SERVICE DELIVERY

Every store has a different customer service policy. Choose a store that is well known for being loyal to its customers. Some furniture stores will allow you to exchange an item within a certain time limit if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Learn what fees are involved if you have to return an item -- if that is allowed at all. As well, ask about the store’s delivery policy, including how much it costs, how far they’ll deliver and how quickly your furniture will arrive. If you are comparison shopping, factor the delivery cost when considering different stores. A low-priced couch will not save you money if it comes with an expensive delivery fee. It may be worth it to pay a little more for

tress? Chances are, you didn’t feel rested in the morning. Sleep deprivation will affect your mood, health and job performance. A new, quality mattress that provides you with a restful night’s sleep is well worth the price. Investing in a mattress is one way to improve your quality of life. A good night’s sleep is sometimes all it takes to wake up the next day feeling ready to conquer the world. Purchasing a mattress is a longterm investment in your health and self-esteem. Don’t be afraid of looking at pricier options. Often, expensive mattresses may be on sale or part of a closeout event. Quality mattresses last longer, so you will not have to go through the trouble of buying another mattress in a year or two. Or worry as much about the mattress sagging and breaking down.

guides and teachers, not pushy salespeople.

the couch if free or reduced cost delivery is available.

VALUE, NOT JUST PRICE

The bottom line is that there are only two things that matter: the quality of the furniture you are purchasing, and the level of service you receive. Once you discover them both, furniture shopping can be a fun experience that that will beautify your home for many years. And you can be happy and comfortable with the furniture for generations to come.

It is best to pay more for a quality piece than to try to save money on something that will not last in the long term. The bigger the investment, the more important the design and build quality become. Concentrate on finding the best value. An inexpensive sofa will not be a good value if it is built with cheap and weak materials. Likewise the most expensive love seat will not be a wise investment if the frame is not built solidly.

MATTRESS

When shopping for a mattress, don’t be afraid of lying down and trying it out. Roll over and pay attention to how your body feels. Are you comfortable? A standard warranty on premium bedding is 10 years. Promotional bedding may be less. Remember, your mattress is a long-term investment. Choose wisely and you will be rewarded with years of restful nights and energetic days.

Here are a few other things to keep in mind: — Do you need a firm or soft mattress? People with a bad back, neck or leg pain, or other circulatory problems might require firm support to keep their spines aligned. Other people prefer flexible support that fits the contours of their bodies. — Do you sleep with another person? Mattresses made of memory foam might be beneficial, as it will give you a personalized experience without disturbing the other person’s sleep. — Standard mattresses can exacerbate allergies if you are sensitive to lint, cotton, dust or dust mites. If you or your partner have allergies, ask about hypoallergenic mattress

How to Choose... a Final Resting Place

How to your local Choose guide

No one likes to think about choosing a final resting place. It is a daunting task that is often overlooked when planning a person’s funeral. of promptly? As you make these observations and others you feel are necessary, inquire about who owns and maintains the property. Does the owner/manager have experience and a good reputation?

Whether pre-planning for yourself or a family member, this end-oflife choice has a lasting impact. The decisions made will leave a legacy for the deceased and help the living go beyond the grieving process. Here are some thoughts to consider when choosing a final resting place. One of the first things to think about when selecting a final resting place is family. If you have a large number of family buried in a certain cemetery, then that would be a good place to start. If you do not have a family attachment or there is no space available, then you would need to begin to search what options are available in your area.

location is preferable, so loved ones can pay their respects as often as they would like easily. Once you have found that location, if time permits, visit the cemetery over the course of several months paying close attention to the care given in maintaining the property. Is it mowed often? Are roads kept in good condition? Are downed limbs and other debris taken care

In many cases even well-kept cemeteries may not have long term plans in place for the care and maintenance of the property. Long term planning for upkeep and improvements are important. One way to ensure that plans are in place is to choose a perpetual care cemetery. A perpetual care cemetery is a cemetery where a portion of all property sales is placed in a special fund designed to care for the long term financial needs of upkeep, maintenance, and improvements. As you explore your options for a final resting place take your time and do your homework. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Look into the history of the person or company that owns the cemetery you

How to Choose... a Funeral Home

How to your local Choose guide

Making funeral arrangements can be burdensome, especially when that process involves a close family member. The difficulty begins with our need to deal with our own feelings of grief, while trying to figure out just how our loved one might have intended for us to proceed with this tribute that honors their life. All of us can and should help our families by writing down as much information as possible regarding the funeral service we want. Regrettably, only about 1 out of 3 will take the time to provide their family with the few basic guidelines they will need for that process to take place. Of all of those decisions that should be made ahead of time, the most important is selecting a funeral home that can provide the care and support that will best benefit your family. Choosing that funeral home may be as simple as following a family tradition or staying within the local neighborhood. Other considerations might include: Reputation and experience of owners and staff; integrity and trustworthiness of ownership and staff; cost of services and goods provided; general appearance and care of facilities; and encountering a caring, considerate approach that includes a mature and professional attitude, along with a willingness to serve. Aren’t they all about the same? No. Consider the issue of professionalism. As you do, it is important to remember that a competent funeral home’s staff will work with you throughout the visitation and service. They will also follow up and assist you with the required authorizations and legal documents that will need to be filed. Choosing a funeral home that has a proven track record for completing those requirements properly and in a timely manner

will eliminate some unwanted frustrations and headaches. Who can help me with this decision? Local clergy members, law enforcement personnel and your beautician or barber may be among those who would have helpful knowledge or opinions. Non-biased funeral directors, (they do exist), are also a great resource. What about cost? Where cost is an issue, simply visit those funeral homes under consideration, ask to speak to a funeral director or the owner. An open discussion of the cost of the services is always beneficial. The Federal Trade Commission mandates that funeral homes must provide you with a General Price List, which includes an itemization of services. Never assume that an advertised price will meet all of your expectations. Research and know the facts.

staff will insure that the services you request are the services that are provided. In addition, since funeral directors are seldom, (or never), compensated through commissions, he or she can often provide lower cost options. These plans are typically transferable.

policy. For those who already have adequate life insurance or other means available, pre paying may be of lesser importance. Generally speaking, while everyone should consider advanced funeral planning for themselves, it is not always necessary to prefund those plans.

How important is it to prepay for the funeral services that I have planned? Each situation is different. Pre-paying for the funeral service that you have just planned is important and can provide savings by covering future cost increases. Your funeral director will arrange for this by placing your pre payment funds in a trust or by purchasing a single pay life insurance

Ask yourself a simple question. Is my community a better place because of my funeral director? If the answer is, “Probably not:” or, “I’m not sure:” Then it may be time to reconsider your choice. Remember, supporting businesses who are strongly involved in the community where we live, helps strengthen our community.

Is preplanning a good idea? While many funeral homes still rely on third party professional salespersons to initiate pre-need contracts, it appears that the public is less and less in favor of this process. Speaking directly with a funeral director who is on

How to Choose... a Hospice

When people talk about end-of-life care, there’s a common desire – to be at peace with their decisions. It’s no surprise, because the end of life can be one of the most vulnerable and challenging times you or your loved one will face. Concerns for the comfort of a loved one with a lifelimiting illness, worries about the impact on family members, and anxiety about the grieving process all weigh heavily on your soul. That’s why choosing a hospice – the right hospice – can make all the difference! It’s important to know the differences in hospice care, because there is a difference. When you’re looking for a hospice, what you’re really looking for is a partner – a partner who’s going to be there for you and your loved one – every step of the way. You need a partner you can trust – someone who’ll provide your loved one with the same type of tender care you give them. But, what makes a hospice “good” or “bad’? And how do you make such an important decision in the midst of your family’s pain and sorrow? The reality is that unless you’ve used the services of a hospice before, you probably feel very overwhelmed and lost when it comes to the choice. While every hospice is different, there are some characteristics you can look for that will give you the best chance of finding a great hospice. For example:

The right hospice partner will have decades of experience in end-of-life care, including pain symptom management. You’ll want a hospice with a proven track record of expertise; one that’s immersed in and dedicated to the community they serve. The best hospice is the one whose staff is able to spend quality time with patients and provide critical personal care. Their staff should each have the heart of a servant, dedicated to giving your loved ones whatever they need – whenever they need it, 24/7 365 days a year. THAT’S TRADITION YOU CAN TRUST! The right hospice partner understands the emotional ordeal the family is facing and, as a result, responds to their needs in a gentle and respectful manner. Their goal will be to take away as many burdens as possible, so you can spend quality time with your loved one. Even though this is an overwhelming time in your

lives, the right hospice should always strive to instill a sense of calmness whenever possible. THAT’S COMPASSION YOU CAN COUNT ON! The right hospice partner is one whose focus is always on human beings – not dollars and cents. They will not refuse services to anyone who qualifies, regardless of their ability to pay. For their staff, hospice work is so much more than just a job. They believe in their heart they were divinely led to provide this special kind of care, and doing anything else just doesn’t feel right. THAT’S DEDICATION YOU CAN DEPEND ON!

ing for life’s final chapter, helping them find peace – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Tradition you can trust. Compassion you can count on. Dedication you can depend on. THAT’s Serenity HospiceCare!

What DO you look for when it’s time to call hospice? A trusted reputation. Spiritually-based devotion. A “mission over money” attitude. Choosing a hospice is one of the most important decisions you and your loved ones will ever make, so trust your family to the area’s resource for expert care and counsel-

“Peace Of Mind When It Matters Most” How is Serenity HospiceCare Different? It is important to know the particulars of hospice care, because there is a difference. Established in 1989, Serenity HospiceCare is the most experienced local hospice, providing the best possible care for the whole person: physically, emotionally and spiritually. Decisions about your care are made right here, with you, not by an out-of-state corporation. Our board of directors is made up of people who live, work and worship in the counties we serve.

How to Choose... the Right Insurance Agent

Selecting the Right Insurance Agent for Your Needs The right insurance and the right agent can make your life so much easier. A savvy agent can help save you time and money and give you peace of mind. Shopping for the right insurance agent can be taxing. There are so many factors to consider, including finding a company that offers the right mix of service, coverage and an affordable price. For many, the biggest challenge is how to identify a reliable, reputable agent. Remember that everyone needs insurance coverage. An experienced agent can walk you through various options, keeping in mind your budget and lifestyle. Before choosing an insurance plan, you will need to identify an agent to guide you through the process. Your financial future depends on finding the right person to help you get insurance that will fit your needs. Your family, friends and colleagues have likely worked with insurance agents in the past. Ask people you trust for referrals. If you receive a recommendation, it is because that person has had a positive experience. There is a strong likelihood that you will have similar results. Successful agents understand that offering great service will keep them in business. Their careers depend on word-ofmouth. If you are happy with the service you receive, your insurance agent will appreciate

00 1

your willingness to send business their way. If you do not have recommendations, begin researching your options. Begin by looking at local companies and brokers. Large insurers give all of their agents the same training. Each agent will be subject to the same company policies. In some ways, that can be comforting. However, agents at large companies may lack creativity and flexibility in how they handle their accounts. As you conduct your research, be thorough and critical. Buying a policy is similar to purchasing a new car or home. It truly is that important. Select a company that is highly regarded by consumers. Read reviews of each company to determine who has the most satisfied clients. Are they easy to work with? Have there been any problems with collecting on a policy? Also, check that any prospective agent has all necessary licenses and training. After narrowing your list of prospective agents, make an appointment to visit each one. Prepare a list of questions and concerns about your personal situation. Take notes during your meeting. Remember that you must feel comfortable with the

answers before purchasing a policy. If an agent tries to pressure you into making a decision right away, inform him that you need more time and cannot sign anything immediately. The right agent will let you take as much time as you need to understand the implications of each policy. They will give you useful information and not subject you to high-pressure sales techniques. Your agent should be available. The relationship doesn’t end once the sale is completed. Your dialogue should be continuous. The best agents are available in the event you have to file a claim. Agents who have been in business for many years likely have a good reputation and track record. They understand the policies and will even take extra care that you are properly protected. It is essential that you choose the right type and amount of insurance to adequately protect

yourself and your financial future. The policy should be tailored to fit your specific needs. A seasoned, skilled insurance agent will be an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future.

How to Choose... a New Car Dealer

How to your local Choose guide

Purchasing a new car can seem like a daunting experience, especially if you have never done it before. With the right dealership, the whole experience will become a simple, low-pressure transaction. Good car dealers make the entire process of buying a car simple and straightforward.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAR

Selecting the right automobile for your needs and lifestyle is essential. Large families may need an SUV or van to fit everyone into the vehicle. But college students buying their first car would probably be happy with a compact car such as coupe. The savings on gas will help ease your finances while you are in school. Along with the car model, there are numerous options to consider. You might get a car with a navigation system, moonroof, GPS and satellite radio, just to name a few.

It is common misconception that a larger dealer can offer you a cheaper price on a new vehicle. Federal regulations actually require the manufacturer to sell new vehicles to dealerships at the same cost, regardless of their size.

worth getting a less-than-satisfactory experience just to save a few dollars. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the dealership. Buying a car is an expensive, long-term commitment. It is always better to find a car salesperson who is informative and friendly. It will make your transaction as simple and comfortable as possible. Look for someone that has been in business for a while. For example, Sam Scism opened Sam

Scism Ford Lincoln in 1937 and we continue to treat our customers as our priority today. After almost 80 years in business, we are still a hometown dealership that is family owned and operated. In addition to knowing that we will be here to serve all of your auto needs tommorrow, we also stand behind our vehicles. We want to protect your investment and that is why most vehicles will come with a Lifetime Warranty at no additional charge.

Of course, you should test-drive a car before purchasing it. Make sure it fits you and your lifestyle. When you begin your negotiations, remember that price isn’t everything. Service should play a role as well. You are building a long-term relationship with this dealer and manufacturer. It is not

SAM SCISM FORD LINCOLN

CHOOSE THE DEALER

Once you have settled on a car model, check into area car dealers. Beware of deals that seem too good to be true. In the recent world of digital marketing, some dealerships will advertise a drastically reduced price vehicle and when you arrive to view it, the vehicle might not even be in their inventory. If it seems too good to be true... it usually is.

How to Choose... Your Ophthalmologist

How to your local Choose guide

It’s important to know what to look for when choosing an Ophthalmologist. Three key factors should be present: 1. Has the Ophthalmologist been recommended to you by your optometrist or your primary care doctor? 2. Is the Ophthalmologist local? Do they provide excellent care and service? Are they available during working and non-working hours for emergency care? 3. Is the Ophthalmologist Board Certified? The physicians of Precision Eye Care meet each of the concerns above and much more! Doctors Anton Beffa, John Fitz and Michael Morris are Board Certified and are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. Precision Eye Care provides the latest technology in surgical procedures and is currently offering Femto-Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery.

Ophthalmologists have a full medical degree along with their specialized treatment for eye care. Their extensive background typically includes four years of pre-med school, four years of medical school, at least one year of an internship and three years of residency managing diseases of the eye and performing eye surgery before receiving their ophthalmology license. Doctors Fitz, Beffa and Morris are all Fellows of the American College of Surgeons.

TREATMENT

Ophthalmologists specialize in certain diseases and treatments such as cataract surgery, bladeless (laser) cataract surgery, i-stent placement for glaucoma, and all diseases of the eye such as macular degeneration, diabetic exams and dry eye syndrome. The Retina Institute from St. Louis is available every Tuesday at Precision Eye Care to keep your treatment close to home

and avoid travel out of town.

for your care.

INSURANCE

REFERENCES

If you have health insurance, check the list of doctors who are covered under your plan. Insurance companies make agreements with ophthalmologists (eye doctors) to deliver services at a prearranged price. Picking an “in-network” doctor will save you money on your co-pay and out of pocket expenses. Do you need a primary care referral to see a specialist? Contact your primary care doctor or family practitioner and have them fax us a referral

Check for the ophthalmologist that has the most up-to-date treatments. Be sure your ophthalmologist can treat your specific needs. Doctors Fitz, Beffa and Morris are able to co-manage your case with your optometrist if sent by them for your treatments or cataract surgery. Friends and family can also provide helpful advice. They can share their experiences with you.

Our goal is to help preserve and restore one of life’s most precious gifts: Good Vision We welcome you and thank you for choosing us to provide your eye care!

Dry Eye Disease/ Allergy

• Nearly 40% of Americans experience symptoms of dry eye on a regular basis. With proper treatment many patients note significant improvement in their dry eyes.

How to Choose... a Pool or Spa

How great would it be to have your own pool and spa in the comfort of your home? Going to a spa is a refreshing way to relax, but those visits can certainly add up. They become expensive if you go often, and traveling can often leave you feeling drained. Why not install a home spa or pool? It is a fabulous way to feel like you’ve been on vacation without ever leaving home. Many people who suffer from chronic back pain or circulatory issues find relief in a spa. Contrary to popular belief, home spas have become quite affordable in recent years. As a result, they are also very popular. There are easy-to-install models and even portable ones that you can take with you on vacation. The home-spa industry has worked hard to incorporate innovations, such as ozonators and aromatherapy fragrances. Spas often found in high-end hotels and resorts are now available for the average consumer. You may be able to purchase some of these models at your favorite big-box or home-improvement center. You can also purchase a home spa with a media center, along with therapeutic and LED lighting. Watch your favorite DVD or TV program while relaxing in the tub. The best spas include hydrotherapy, which will help you heal and repair your body. Tubs with water jets will massage muscles, improve circulation, relax nerves and ease pain. The water suspends your tired muscles in weightlessness, allowing them to rest. People with chronic back problems often report relief.

Custom spas are also available. You can have it built to meet your specifications. Everyone has a different reason for installing a home spa, and manufacturers are happy to accommodate your requests. At-home swimming pools are another favorite for health-conscious people. These pools are not like your typical in-ground blue bathtub. Natural stone, manmade waterfalls and landscape detailing will make your pool into a private oasis. Before purchasing your pool, decide whether you would like an in-ground or above-ground pool. Above-ground pools are less expensive, but many people prefer the durability and overall look of an in-ground pool. Take time to think about your decision. After all, your pool is a major investment. It will be a part of your home for many years. Consider the landscaping around your pool. There are many possible finishes for the decking alone. You can also choose the materials, style and features. Sometimes the environment around a pool can seem as relaxing as stepping foot in the water. It’s a fact that most people build their dream pool over a number of years as it fits their budget. You don’t have to do everything at once. Just start with a high-

quality installation and a vision of what you want the area to become. You can add more features later. With so many advances in home spas and swimming pools, combined with their affordability, it makes sense to install one on your property. After all, wouldn’t it be nice to have your own private resort without the hassle of leaving home?

HOME POOLS & SPAS IS YOUR LOCAL SOURCE FOR ALL OF YOUR POOL & SPA NEEDS. The backyard oasis you have always wanted and deserved awaits you.

How to Choose a Real Estate Agency

How to Choose - your local guide

How to your local Choose guide

Reputation is a company’s biggest asset. So when the time comes to buy or sell a home you want to pick a reputable realtor and real estate agency. A good real estate agency will act in your best interests. That’s why it’s essential to find a high-quality real estate agency. Ask your family, friends and neighbors for recommendations. Their experiences will guide you toward a reputable agency. What do people say about their services?

Once you have a list of possibilities, do some research. Find out how long the agency has been in business. Ideally, you want people who know your community. If the real estate agency is merely a side business, it might not give you the best results. Buying and selling homes is a full time job. Look on the Internet and read customer service reviews. They should also have an impact on your overall impression of an agency. Once you have narrowed your list, contact some businesses and ask questions. You should know about their listings, fees and commissions. Choose an agency that has connections with the community, a sharp understanding of neighborhoods that interest you, and solid contacts with other realty companies. This assumes major importance when you’re selling your current house, because the agency usually handles the sale while the realtor helps you find your new one.

Larger agencies have more opportunities to network and sell your home. They also usually have more agents, which can translate to more and faster sales. Be prepared to ask an agency the following questions if you are selling your home: -- How will you advertise my home? -- Will you use the Internet and newspapers? -- How many pictures of my house will appear online? -- On which sites will my home be featured? -- Do you have other homes that have recently been sold in this price range? -- How long has the agency been selling homes in my neighborhood? -- What makes your agency unique?

How to Choose a Salon & Spa

How to Choose - your local guide

How to your local Choose guide

There are plenty of things to think about when selecting a salon & spa, from the expertise of the staff, to the range of services offered. Maybe the best way to pick a salon or spa is to make an appointment and try it out. The right place will send you home feeling relaxed and looking beautiful! STYLING SALON

One bad hair day is one thing – a string of them probably means you need to visit a salon. The right hairstylist can prevent frequent bad hair days, transforming your hair into something stunning. But not all salons have good stylists. If you find yourself wandering from salon to salon, it is time to rethink your choices. Discovering a talented hairstylist does not have to be a matter of luck. It takes patience and research to find the right salon.

GET ADVICE

Asking friends and family for referrals is a great way to find a salon. Look for people with hair that is similar to yours. Different hair types might have a different experience. Be sure the salon and stylist can work with your type of hair and the salon is clean and well kept. Get the name of the stylist at the salon. Many times, it is the stylist who will make the salon experience worthwhile.

LOOK ONLINE

Researching your options on the Internet will help you refine your list. Salon websites can give you tremendous insight into the business and their values. Salons that don’t have websites might be well-kept secrets. They might be keeping costs down, which will help you receive services at a lower price. But if you need a high-end makeover, an impressive website could be the sign of a fabulous experience. It might show their attention to style and detail, as well as modern trends.

MATCH YOUR LIFESTYLE

Look for salons that match your lifestyle. If convenience is important in your life, make sure the salon is close to your home or office. If you work long hours, your ideal salon will be open during hours you can make appointments. The staff’s appearance will also tell you a lot. Stylist love to experiment with their own hair. They might even think of themselves as “walking billboards”. If you hair is easy to cut but difficult to color, opt for a salon that has a solid reputation for its colorists.

Haircuts and styles are a salon’s basic services, but they might offer other treatments as well. Manicures, tanning, acrylic nails, and deep conditioning treatments are just a few of the extra services you might find at a salon. Don’t assume a high-end salon will offer massages and other spa-like features. Verify that the salon has the services you need before making an appointment.

and makeup applications. They may even have services that are not listed in their brochures. Check with different spas before deciding on the services you prefer. When you want to try a new spa, schedule a basic service, such as a manicure. If you like the atmosphere and customer service, you might enjoy a more advanced service. Each client should feel like their experience is the staff’s top priority. You don’t want to feel rushed. Rather, the best spas will make you feel like good friends are completely focused on providing you individual attention and service.

DAY SPA

CLEANLINESS

Remember, everyone’s needs are different. You can find a salon for your individual requirements.

OTHER OPTIONS

Everyone needs a little pampering and a spa is a great way to feel relaxed and refreshed. This is especially true after a hard week at work, a long project, or a particularly stressful situation. Spending some time in luxury by visiting a spa is a great way to refresh your mind and body. Men and women enjoy relaxing massages, makeovers, and even wellness tips. You can get a facial, manicure, pedicure, or waxing treatments. Some people prefer to stop at a spa before a special occasion, such as a wedding or class reunion. Others use a spa to recover from a stressful situation. Here are some other factors to keep in mind when choosing a spa that is right for you.

A clean environment is indicative of good management. In this business, sanitation is essential. There should be no broken equipment or dirty corners. Everything should be organized. Spa guests must feel safe and comfortable in a sparkling clean space.

PRICE

Budgets are personal. While it’s easy to look at a list and pick the cheapest service, it will rarely be your best option. Different spas have different definitions for the treatments they offer, making it difficult to compare. You may even have to research spa terms to help you understand the services being offered.

STYLE

Atmosphere is a key element when selecting the perfect spa. Relaxation, serenity, and wellness are qualities you are looking

How to Choose... a Tire Store

How to your local Choose guide

There are a number of factors to consider when selecting a tire store. After all, tires are a significant investment, and considering the longer treadlife of most tires on the market today, they are also a long-term decision. Here are some tips tires are a long-term you should consider. 1. Selection

Tire size is only one factor in the selection process. Think of it like buying a pair of shoes. If you go to the store to buy work boots, and they only have dress shoes in your size, does that solve your problem? By having a good selection, a tire store can help you get the tires that meet your needs, whether that’s wet traction, quiet ride, long treadlife, etc.

2. Service

You want a store with knowledgeable employees who listen to what is important to you. If you tell them the most important factors to you are good wet traction and a quiet ride, they should direct you to tires that fit those criteria. And since

investment, service after the sale is especially important.

Do they offer road hazard protection? Do they have a program for regular rotations and balancing? In short, if you have some sort of problem with the tires, will they be there to help resolve it?

3. Technology

Installing the tires is only one part of the equation. Proper balancing and alignment are critical to getting the most out of your tires. Balancing technology has improved greatly over the years. Is the tire store using modern equipment? Improper alignment can ruin a set of tires, not to mention having a negative impact on the way your vehicle handles. Not all tire stores offer alignment services. By selecting a store that offers alignment, you can have your vehicle’s alignment checked and, if needed, get it corrected at the same time your tires are installed.

4. Price

Everyone wants a good deal. Some tire stores are large enough to buy direct from the

manufacturers. This allows them to price their tires more aggressively. Additionally, some stores offer financing options that make the purchase a little easier on your budget. If you find a lower price elsewhere but the store is lacking in these other categories, ask if the store offers price matching. At Plaza Tire Service, our tagline is “A Real Tire Store”. What we mean by this is that we lead the way in selection, service, technology and price. Plaza Tire Service has over one hundred thousand tires in stock. Our associates are knowledgeable and well-trained. They regularly get specialized training from manufacturers so they are equipped to answer customer questions. Plaza Tire Service

locations are equipped with the latest technology for balancing and alignment as well as other vehicle services. And when it comes to price, Plaza Tire Service has relationships with all the top manufacturers, allowing us to provide the best value to our customers. That’s Plaza Tire Service – A Real Tire Store!

How to Choose... a Doctor

Finding a physician is an important step toward a healthier lifestyle, but sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. Here are some elements to consider when you are searching for a new doctor: Ask for referrAls

Friends, family and other trusted sources can be the best way to find a new doctor. People will gladly give referrals when they have had positive experiences with their health care providers. The American Medical Association or other professional physicians’ organizations in your area will be another useful resource.

Do your reseArch

Most doctors have online website or profiles to give you some background information and narrow down your search. Look for these items: 1. What is the doctor’s education and training? 2. Is he or she affiliated with a hospital or health care organization that you trust? 3. Is the clinic location convenient to your home or work? 4. Is he or she boardcertified? (Hint: If you are looking for a general practitioner, he or she may be board certified in internal medicine or family medicine. Internal medicine physicians often see adults over the age of 18, and family medicine physicians will see patients of any age.)

Verify with your insurAnce

Often, your choice of doctors will be limited by your health insurance carrier. Insurance companies have contracts with individuals or group practices. If you go outside of your insurer’s provider network, you will most likely pay an additional fee.

PrePAre questions for your Doctor’s office

When choosing a primary care physician, you may want to ask: 1. How does he/she like to communicate between visits or after hours? Emails? Phone? 2. How long does it take to schedule an appointment if you’re sick? 3. How does he/she refer you to a specialist if you need one?

MAke sure you feel coMfortAble

A primary care physician should be a trusted partner who understands your medical history and is dedicated to helping you maintain your health and well-being. You should feel comfortable asking questions and telling your doctor about any and all health problems. Ideally, your first visit will include a routine physical examination and documentation of your medical history.

Your primary care physician is your guide for preventative medical care, medical treatment options, and healthy lifestyle habits. You should see your primary care physician at least once every year for a wellness visit. Make an appointment today!
