H

ow does an individual choose a reliable lawyer, someone who is trustworthy and willing to work hard for their client? A lawyer should be an excellent communicator, thoroughly understand the law, make clients feel comfortable and help them navigate through challenging situations. It’s a tough task to select just the right lawyer and entrust them to provide clients with proper legal advice. That person should fit one’s legal needs and budget while also providing peace of mind. The answer to finding just the right lawyer often comes from a personal recommendation of a close friend, relative or business associate. Fortunately, the community recently gained a highlyregarded and respected lawyer who fits all of these qualifications, Kimber Monroe. She represents clients in almost every facet of the law: Estate Planning (wills, trusts, and durable power of attorney/ POAs), Probate and Trust Administration, Special Needs Planning and Guardianship, Commercial Transactions, Small Businesses, and Personal Injury. Monroe recently opened her law firm Kimber Monroe Law LLC in historic downtown Farmington after she, her husband and three children moved to St. Francois County. They’ve quickly grown to love the community and beautiful countryside. Monroe is a small-town

HOW TO CHOOSE AN AUDIOLOGIST

Hearing Care Partners help patients to determine which technology is best

Staff take time to get to know patients to understand their hearing issues, needs

W

e all have favorite sounds: calming ocean waves lapping against the shore, rain falling softly in the night, the crackling of a fireplace, birds chirping on a quiet morning, melodic music, children’s sweet laughter. Sometimes these sounds are difficult to hear. When someone struggles to hear, they might feel excluded from taking part in group conversations. They may find it hard to complete phone calls or even watch TV without turning the volume to higher-thannormal levels. People who have hearing difficulties often feel frustrated, excluded and sometimes even sad. Untreated hearing loss affects people in many ways. It’s a common physical condition in the U.S. and many people often refuse to acknowledge this and are unwilling to seek treatment or use a device. But hearing devices do more for people than simply help them hear. They improve their physical, emotional and mental health; boost their self-confidence; offer a sense of safety; improve relationships; and so much more. Hearing Care Partners help patients to determine which technology is best for their hearing needs. Dr. Karen Melton, a local audiologist, said if someone believes they need hearing aids or have a hearing loss,

the first thing they should do is consult with their hearing care provider. “At Hearing Care Partners, we walk everyone through our four-step hearing treatment process,” she said. “We recommend bringing a companion to your appointment, as a secondary perspective helps understand the impact of hearing difficulties in your life, and they can also be a second set of ears for the information the provider will cover with you.” Melton said the first step at Hearing Care Partners is to begin with an interview which helps the provider determine the extent of the individual’s hearing challenges and aids in uncovering any specific areas requiring further attention. After the interview, the hearing care provider takes a closer look inside the individual’s ear to identify possible obstruction or damage to the ear canal or eardrum. “We’ll figure out the nature of your hearing loss by conducting a hearing test,” said Melton. The last step is to determine treatment solutions based on the person’s needs. There are many types of hearing aids available in various styles, features and price points. From behindthe-ear to custom-fit hearing devices which are nearly invisible, Melton said there are unlimited options from which to choose. “At Hearing Care Partners, we work with all major

manufacturers to help you determine which technology will be the best fit for your hearing needs as well as your lifestyle,” she said. According to Melton, there are numerous exciting technological features available such as rechargeability and artificial intelligence. These options are examples of why it’s important for individuals to discuss their lifestyle with their hearing care provider to ensure the best technology and fit are recommended during their treatment consultation process. “Prices can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars and are dependent on your lifestyle and your hearing test results,” said Melton. “There are no one-size-fitsall recommendations on cost because it can vary depending on the technology level needed as well as any benefits you have available through your insurance.” Melton said when individuals schedule an appointment with Hearing Care Partners, their staff assists their patients in checking for any available hearing care benefits they may have through their insurance provider. “No two people are alike,” said Melton. “We believe your treatment should be the same way. Bring back the sounds of life you love with a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique lifestyle.” Melton opened Hearing Care Partners in 2003. She and her staff of 23 employees,

with 11 of those as providers including hearing instrument specialists David Shepard and Lee Supitilov, work hard every day to make a difference in their patients’ lives. They celebrate every time a patient finds success. HOW TO CHOOSE AN ORTHODONTIST

AREA GUIDE

Fredericktown Family Dental offers big smiles through high-quality care Local dental office provides best products, outstanding service to patients

A

crooked smile often causes selfconsciousness. For many people, achieving a healthy, beautiful smile is the reason to seek orthodontic care. Braces are one example of orthodontics. They’re a way to improve someone’s smile and self-confidence. But choosing an orthodontist can be difficult. How does one know who to choose? First, check the qualifications of the orthodontist. Next, visit the business’s website to see what type of technology is used such as braces, Invisalign, digital X-rays and more. Third, does the orthodontist offer a guarantee on the orthodontic treatment? Fourth, check to see where the orthodontist is located. There will likely be many appointments required based on the patient’s treatment. Finally, what is the cost of the orthodontic treatment? Patients who have orthodontic insurance are generally able to utilize that. For others, a payment plan is offered if necessary to make the treatments more affordable and to fit within one’s budget. A consultation with the orthodontist allows the patient to understand what treatment options are available. Through this consultation, the patient will also see if that particular orthodontist and his or her

First State Community Bank helps customers to achieve financial goals Local bank has long history of helping the community

W

hether buying a car, paying for college, starting a small business, or buying a home, people likely encounter at least one larger expense in their life at some point. These expenses usually mean exciting things are happening in that person’s life. Many people’s dreams and goals would not be achievable without loans to help pay for these significant expenses over time. From families with young children to aspiring entrepreneurs, lending products provide open-door opportunities for all kinds of people to pursue their dreams, strengthen their financial security, and begin a foundation for longterm prosperity. Whatever the reason for seeking a loan, it’s crucial that the person understands how loans work, what lending options might be in any given scenario, and how one can manage their loans and debts to move closer to achieving financial goals instead of falling further and further behind. The definition of a loan is simply a contract made with a financial institution. In this contract, a lender provides an applicant with a certain amount of money. Depending on the type of loan, this amount may be intended for a specific use. But the borrower can have flexibility on how to use the money. In exchange for this

loan, the borrower agrees to a repayment plan that charges interest based on the amount borrowed. There are various types of loans. When borrowers apply for one, lenders evaluate that person’s application by focusing on specific key data points that indicate if the person is reliable and capable of affording the monthly repayment terms for that

loan. These points include one’s credit score, on-time payment history, income, and loan collateral. Loan services can be confusing, but plenty of highly trained staff members at First State Community Bank (FSCB) are ready to offer help. Whether individuals seek a line of credit, personal loan, credit card transfer options, or financial counseling services

to improve their money management skills, FSCB is committed to helping its customers set and reach their financial goals. FSCB has a long history of helping the community. Since 1954, they have been a leading financial resource for residents and businesses across Missouri. FSCB has built its reputation on an unyielding commitment to delivering the best

possible service to customers and partners. Since it opened its doors in 1954, FSCB has maintained an important philosophy: what matters to their customers matters to them. They know their customers work hard, so FSCB works hard for them. This type of neighbor-toneighbor banking encourages strong relationships with their customers. These relationships are the foundation of FSCB’s banking and community relations approach. “We believe in helping our customers reach their financial goals, and we believe in giving back to the community,” said FSCB CEO/President Matt Sebastian. “When it comes to banking, our FSCB customers always come first.” FSCB has 770 employees at 57 different branches ready to help their customers. So regardless of the reason for seeking a loan, FSCB is ready to help customers reach their financial goals now and in the future. HOW TO CHOOSE A RURAL HEALTH CLINIC

Community hospital, rural health clinic offer compassionate care to area residents ICMC, Family Care Clinic treat patients just like family

M

issouri’s rural health clinics play a very important role in providing care to patients who live in remote areas. Often resources are limited even for individuals who have health insurance. Area residents have been fortunate to utilize a rural health clinic that provides advanced services and topnotch care. Iron County Medical Center (ICMC) has been offering compassionate care to patients since its doors opened in 2006. The hospital’s rural health clinic, the Family Care Clinic, opened in 2008. Currently, about 165 staff members are employed through ICMC. These employees take pride in providing their community and surrounding areas with quality care. There are many advantages for patients who receive care at a community hospital or rural health clinic. First, the staff are actively involved in patients’ care. At ICMC, the hospital administrator can be seen checking on and interacting with patients and staff. “We all work together as a dedicated team,” said Billie Jo Russell, BSN, RN. She is director of ICMC Clinical and Surgery Services and has worked at the hospital since November 2014. She has been employed in the healthcare industry since 2003 after graduating from Mineral Area College. She obtained her

bachelor’s degree in nursing from University of MissouriKansas City in 2013. As director of ICMC Clinical and Surgery Services, Russell sees firsthand the connection between the staff and patients. She attends to numerous day-to-day tasks including overseeing ICMC’s surgeries, staff scheduling and overseeing the rural health clinic. ICMC’s rural health clinic locally provides patients with quality care with five primary care providers and specialists in cardiology, ENT, rheumatology, urology, GI, podiatry, general surgery, and telemedicine for nephrology and endocrinology. Russell oversees the clinic; assists patients, staff and providers when needed; and attends to any situations which occur throughout the day. She’s also overseeing the current transition of the electric medical record (EMR) system for the clinic and surgery services. In addition, the rural health clinic is expanding and is estimated to be completed by October. The dedication of staff and continuous upgrades are obvious advantages for patients who seek care at ICMC. “I’d say what makes the clinic the best rural health clinic is we truly treat everyone as if they’re our family or friends because in a lot of cases, these people really are,” said Russell. She said ICMC’s staff work

at the facility because they enjoy getting to know their patients and don’t treat them as numbers because they’re often neighbors, friends and family. “It’s important to us to make a difference in taking care of our patients the best we can,” she said. “For me, I like to be able to take the knowledge I’ve gained through training and previous work experience at other facilities in Festus and

St. Louis and bring that to our patients here in a rural area.” Russell said she truly loves her job and working at ICMC. “It’s been a calling on my life to be a nurse and serve the community,” she said. Iron County Medical Center staff have been offering compassionate care to area residents for almost 20 years. Combined with the highquality services and staff at its

rural health clinic, ICMC will continue to offer continued compassionate care for many more years to come.

HOW TO CHOOSE A NEW CAR DEALER

Dealership offers 70 years of combined experience from true professionals

Local car dealership offers Auffenberg Advantage and excellent customer service

P

urchasing a new car can be stressful. It’s a major financial decision that requires a few areas to consider: needs, budget and the right dealership. First, potential buyers need to know what kind of vehicle they need. How many people will ride in the vehicle most of the time? Will it be for a full-sized family, a couple or an individual? This answer will help determine the size, make and model of the vehicle needed. The budget is obviously important when purchasing a new vehicle. Will the individual seek a loan and make monthly payments, make a down payment, or purchase the car outright? Can they find a vehicle that will fit into their monthly budget? The third area to consider is the dealership. Where is the best place to purchase a new vehicle? With hundreds of dealerships to choose from around the state, it can be hard to narrow down the choices. It’s often best to choose an established dealership with ample inventory. There is one local dealership where customers have been shopping since 1942. Farmington’s Auffenberg Chevrolet Buick GMC has an extensive selection of new vehicles, along with preowned options. The staff is highly competent, friendly and ready to assist customers with any sales- or maintenancerelated questions.

“We’re confident you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for at a price or payment you can afford at Auffenberg Chevrolet Buick GMC,” said General Manager Barry Pannett. With 70 years of experience collectively between the General Manager Barry Pannett, Service Manager Tim Morgan and the Finance Manager Travers Rittmann, customers are guaranteed to have a positive experience while purchasing a new vehicle. “We have a total of six roof tops in the Auffenberg Group,” said Pannett. “Chris Auffenberg has been a productive part of the Farmington community for more than 30 years.” Beginning about two years ago, the dealership decided to separate themselves from the rest of the local dealerships by providing all individuals who have purchased both a new and pre-owned vehicle with the “Auffenberg Advantage” which consists of one year of key replacement, wheel repair, tire replacement and exterior paint protection ALL at No additional cost. “We have the highest Google rating in our dealer group and take great pride in treating all of our customers with the utmost respect and transparency,” said Pannett. In addition, the dealership sponsors and supports many area schools, businesses and nonprofit organizations in Farmington and throughout the county. Each year, the business partners with

With the local Auffenberg

HOW TO CHOOSE A TIRE SHOP

Missouri-based tire dealer has served the Parkland for nearly 45 years

Service, selection and price set Plaza Tire Service apart from the competition

R

epairing or replacing a vehicle’s tires can be stressful, timeconsuming and expensive. Many people don’t even think about it until there is an immediate problem. Fortunately, there is a local business that takes the stress out of purchasing tires. Plaza Tire Service has been in business for nearly 60 years. Their first store in this area opened in Park Hills in 1978. The Cape Girardeau-based tire dealer now has 72 stores throughout Missouri, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Northern Arkansas. Keith Hummel has worked with Plaza Tire Service for more than 25 years. He is the area supervisor for locations in Park Hills, Farmington, Desloge, Fredericktown, Ironton, Potosi and Rolla. “We pride ourselves in providing the best level of service in the industry,” said Hummel. “If a customer comes in for four tires, our policy is that we want those tires installed on a vehicle in one hour so the customer can get back on the road. The way we can do that is because we have a huge number of tires in stock and ready to be installed immediately.” “Our goal is to say, ‘Let’s install your new tires right now and get you back on the road,’” he said. When helping a customer select tires, Hummel said they’re going to ask some questions about their driving

habits. What type of driving do they do? How many miles do they drive in a year? Have they been happy with their current tires? Asking these questions helps identify which options would work best for a customer. In addition to standard replacement tires, Hummel said Plaza Tire Service has the expertise to help customers who may want to upsize tires or put on a new wheel and tire combination. “We recognize that tires can be a big investment,” said Hummel. “It’s not always something people want to spend money on, so we encourage our employees to provide education to help our customers understand how they can get the most out of their purchase.” Sometimes customers may not be prepared for the expense of new tires. Plaza Tire Service offers a credit card with six months deferred interest on purchases of $149 or more. They also have no credit needed financing options available. “These options can help people who may really need four tires but only have a budget for two,” said Hummel. “There are early pay-off options which also allow our customers to avoid additional finance charges.” Part of the buying process at Plaza Tire Service includes an education component. “Tires are an investment, and we talk with our customers about the steps they can take

The staff at Plaza Tire wants customers to have a great experience, get to choose from options that fit their vehicle, and leave knowing they’ve gotten the best deal on their tires. It’s really that simple.

to get the most service out of their tires,” said Hummel. “We always perform a free alignment check and let the customer know if their vehicle is out of alignment. A poorly aligned vehicle can ruin a set of tires in short order, and not all tire dealers offer alignment services.”

In addition to alignment, another important aspect of tire maintenance is rotation. Most manufacturers recommend tire rotation every 6,000 miles so that you get even wear out of all your tires. “Making sure tire pressure is correct based on manufacturer’s specifications

is really important and possibly one of the easiest things to do to get more life out of your tires,” Hummel said. “We’ll check and adjust your air pressure at no charge at any Plaza Tire Service location.” Plaza Tire Service offers a tire protection plan which includes free tire rotations for the life of the tires, free flat-tire repairs, and a free replacement tire in the first 12 months or 12,000 miles if the tire is damaged due to a road hazard and is beyond repair. “This is a real value to customers because it’s not much additional money and provides them with great peace of mind,” said Hummel. According to Hummel, it all comes back to these three factors: service, selection and price. “We want our customers to have a great experience, get to choose from options that fit their vehicle, and leave knowing they’ve gotten the best deal on their tires. It’s really that simple.” These services are examples of why customers should choose Plaza Tire Service as their preferred tire shop.

HOW TO CHOOSE A HOME INSPECTION

Local business offers residential, commercial building inspections Big River Home Inspections complete variety of property-related inspections

A

quality inspection is crucial in assessing the condition of a home. It’s important to utilize a professional home inspector to assess the general condition of a house. Although a property may appear to be in movein condition, there might be serious issues such as problems with electrical wiring, insulation, plumbing or septic, and much more. Have termites damaged the home? There may even be structural issues that could be dangerous to anyone living in the home. A home inspection is an investment into the house and the family who will reside in that home. It’s important to find a trustworthy inspector who is capable of conducting a thorough inspection of the property. HOW TO CHOOSE A HOSPICE PROVIDER

End-of-life care can provide a better quality of life for the time you have left The team at Serenity HospiceCare is committed to providing peace of mind when it matters most

W

hen a loved one is nearing death, there are difficult decisions to be made. From medications to around-the-clock care, these services are often given by a hospice provider. Michele Day, Marketing Director, has worked two years at Serenity HospiceCare. She said those who have been given a diagnosis of six months or less to live qualify for hospice services. “We recommend getting services as soon as the diagnosis is given,” said Day, “because it gives us time to get to know our patients and they get to know their caregivers. Getting hospice services sooner doesn’t mean dying sooner, it means a better quality of life for the time you have left.” She offered suggestions on specific questions to ask when choosing a hospice provider. “If you’re not sure who to choose for your hospice provider,” said Day, “then interview several providers to find the best fit for your loved one and your family.” Ask if the patient will incur any out-of-pocket expenses. According to Day, Serenity HospiceCare is a not-forprofit organization where patients never receive a bill for services regardless if they have insurance or not. Another question to ask is,

how often will staff visit the patient’s home. For Serenity HospiceCare, patients receive two skilled nursing and three certified nursing assistant (CNA) visits per week. Social workers visit multiple times each month for emotional support, to help with various tasks including completing paperwork and living wills, helping with funeral arrangements, finding nursing home placement, and more. “Even though we have routine visits scheduled with our patients,” said Day, “our staff is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for as needed visits and crisis situations.” When it’s known that a patient is in the actively dying process, a Serenity HospiceCare staff member stays with the patient 24 hours a day whether they are at home or in a facility. “Sometimes patients have no family and our hospice staff take on that role,” said Day. “it’s an honor and privilege to do so. The role of a hospice provider is a calling, not a job. Everyone at Serenity HospiceCare loves and treats our patients just like they’re family.” Another question to ask is what additional services do you provide. Serenity HospiceCare recently added a music therapist to their staff. She meets with patients beforehand to determine

patients’ music interests and then sings and plays instruments during her visits. “This is a definite benefit for all patients, when words fail, music speaks,” said Day. Another question to ask when seeking a hospice provider is if a patient’s medications will be discontinued. Day said, “This Cydney Koenig-Seabaugh, RN, Gayla Sisk, LCSW/Executive Director, Robyn Nagel, MSW/Director of Social Work, Brenda Vinson, LPN is a common misconception, patients can make decisions quickly for the continue to receive their in 1989 by a group of patient’s best interest. prescribed medications. HOW TO CHOOSE A TOBACCO ALTERNATIVE

Business helps customers find alternative to traditional tobacco products The Shed Vapes focuses on its customers and giving back to the community

S

tan Janis smoked cigarettes and chewed tobacco for 35 years. He tried everything to quit, including hypnosis, acupuncture, and Nicotine gum and patches. Nothing worked. At the time, his daughter worked at a vape shop. He went to visit her and ended up buying a vape and supplies from there. That was eight years ago and the reason Janis no longer smokes or chews. He’s been sharing this with others on how they can choose an alternative to tobacco use. “Quitting was my inspiration to others,” said Janis. “When I found out that vaping was the way to quit smoking and chewing, I started sharing this information with others.” Now for nearly a decade, Janis has been guiding others away from cancer-causing cigarettes and tobacco. He co-owns The Shed Vapes with Jordan Wood. When customers enter their business in Bonne Terre, they often say they’re sick of smoking and need help. Customers can buy everything they need at the business to quit smoking for as low as $35. The owners only sell authentic vape equipment. All items are name-brand FDAsubmitted products. “We are wholesale to the public,” he said. “We give people options. Instead of just

a few pieces of equipment, we carry several different pieces and a variety of flavored juices.” Out of the 200 flavors and brands of juice they sell, two of the most popular flavors are blue raspberry and iced banana which has a menthol flavor. Janis started this business four years ago as “a mission and ministry to get people to quit smoking and chewing.” “We estimate that we have had over 5,000 people quit smoking and chewing,” he said. They also do not simply sell products. They teach people how to use the items they purchase. “We’re not in this business to make money,” said Janis. “Our goal is to help people to quit smoking and chewing. Then we help them to quit vaping.” Janis said it’s important that they help customers decrease their nicotine levels. “That’s one of the biggest things that separates us from other shops,” he said. “We actually teach people to use the equipment. We teach them about what they’re getting and why they’re getting it.” Janis explained that there are almost 5,000 chemicals in traditional tobacco. Of those, 68 have been shown to cause cancer. “So far, nothing has been shown in vapor products that causes cancer,” he said. “The eliquid products we carry are premium-brand ejuices made with food-grade products and ingredients.”

Now for nearly a decade, Owner Stan Janis has been guiding others away from cancer-causing cigarettes and tobacco.

Janis also owns a shipping company, so his portion of the profit earned from The Shed Vapes goes to the community. The Shed Vapes made a $1,000 donation to Shop with a Cop this past winter. “That money comes from our customers,” Janis said, “and we make sure it’s clear that our customers get the credit for that. They throw their spare change in a box and we match it.” The business donates to other area charities,

including the sheriff’s and fire departments and other local organizations. “We give our customers the credit,” he said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here or be able to help others.” “We’re not trying to put any retail shop out of business,” said Janis. “All we’re doing is trying to sell items at a reasonable cost to save people money and help them to quit smoking or chewing, and we don’t sell customers something they don’t need.”

Two full-time associates, Gage Lee and Mikel Blount, work at The Shed Vapes. The business is expanding into a larger building by the end of July.

ith so many pharmacy possibilities, how does a customer choose one? The customer’s answer should be based on which pharmacy offers expertise and ongoing commitment to keeping their customers healthy. Parkland Health Mart offers extensive expertise and ongoing commitment to keeping their customers healthy. In fact, they continually educate themselves on the newest medications, topics and best practices in pharmacy. They are continuously looking for opportunities to deliver products and services that meet the needs of their customers. “We are always looking for opportunities to deliver products and services that meet the needs of our customers,” said Business Manager Debbie Hamby. Lisa and Marty Umfleet, lifelong residents of St. Francois County, opened the first Parkland Health Mart Pharmacy in 2005. The couple wanted to fulfill their dream of making a difference in the community in which they grew up. In 2012, they partnered with Jeremy Leach, another local pharmacist, to expand their dream into Madison County by opening a pharmacy in Fredericktown. In 2013, the Ironton store opened, followed by Farmington in 2018,

Piedmont in 2019, and most recently Greenville and Festus in 2021. There are now seven local Parkland Health Mart pharmacies: Desloge, Farmington, Festus, Fredericktown, Greenville, Ironton and Piedmont. In addition to prescribed and over-the-counter medications, Parkland Health Mart offers medical equipment such as walkers, canes, crutches, wheelchairs, shower aides and diabetic shoes. Nursing services are offered at the Desloge, Farmington and Fredericktown stores each week for wellness checks. Vaccines such as COVID, flu, pneumonia, shingles and others, along with injection services like B12 shots, hormones and more, are provided. Other services offered include Medicare Part D signup assistance during open enrollment time each fall; medication synchronization such as aligning all refills to come due at the same time each month to avoid making multiple trips to the pharmacy; medication packaging (arranging medications by date and time of day to stay organized and ensure medications are taken correctly); compounding services through the Desloge store (including pet medications); and long-term care services through the Fredericktown store (providing medications for residential and nursing facilities).

Parkland Health Mart offers free delivery Monday through Friday at all of their stores except Greenville. The stores’ drivers travel all over Southeast Missouri to get medications and products to customers. Hamby said Parkland Health Mart employees work hard to promote a culture in their stores that has a “do whatever it takes” attitude. “Our employees work at the top of their game every day to provide our customers with not just a great experience, but a truly excellent experience,” she said. “You will not find a group of people who have a more caring attitude and really has your best interests at heart.” She said the employees approach pharmacy “as participating as a partner in your overall healthcare. We want to take the time to get to know you and understand your needs and then to look out for you! We want you to get the best we have to offer.” At Parkland Health Mart, their customers are their lifeblood. “We’re honored that our customers choose us,” said Hamby. “It’s not about filling your meds and sending you on your way, it’s about treating you the way we would want to be treated ourselves. “We know many of our customers are dealing with serious health issues, many come to us at a time when they are not feeling well, and we want to be sensitive to those needs, as well as take the time to get to know them

HOW TO CHOOSE A PRE-OWNED DEALERERSHIP

Local family business still serving the community as they have since 1937 Sam Scism Ford’s reputation is the customer’s guarantee

P

urchasing a vehicle can be a daunting task especially for those who’ve never done it before. Whether it’s a pre-owned or new car, the right dealership can make the overall experience of buying a car simple, straightforward and stress-free. When the buyer has decided to purchase a vehicle, they should check local area car dealerships. Be sure to avoid “too good to be true” advertised deals such as highly underpriced vehicles. Buying a pre-owned or new vehicle is a long-term commitment, so choose a dealership that is wellestablished and offers selection. Work with an experienced salesperson who is friendly and informative. This makes the transaction simpler and more comfortable. Once at the dealership, test-drive the vehicle before purchasing it. If the customer decides they’re interested in purchasing a vehicle, they should consider service as part of the price. Consider protecting your vehicle with an extended service contract to cover unexpected and unavoidable repair expenses down the road. With the vehicle purchase, the customer is building a longterm relationship with the dealership. With 85 years of experience selling pre-owned and new cars, Sam Scism Ford has an

established history as a hometown dealership. The family-owned and operated dealership knows how to treat customers right. They serve all their customers’ automobile needs. Sam Scism opened the business in 1937, originally in Bloomfield, Mo., selling pre-owned vehicles. In 1954, Sam moved the business to Park Hills and acquired the Ford franchise to begin selling new Ford vehicles along with the pre-owned inventory for which he was well-known. In 1968, the franchise moved a final time to the business’s current location. In 2008, the dealership underwent a full renovation to now include the large showroom and expansive service area seen at the business today. Marketing Manager Ashlie Scism said a fun fact about the dealership is that when customers are standing inside the showroom, they can still see standing walls of the original structure in the interior office area. “That, along with our photo memory wall in our service area and the original 1931 Ford truck displayed, help us to keep the history of Sam Scism and his original business in every day of our business,” she said. With more than 200 vehicles on their lot, Sam Scism Ford offers their customers variety, reliability and the freedom to choose regardless of their credit. “We have 85 years of

experience putting our customers’ needs first and that has allowed us to serve our community year after year, continuing into our third generation of family ownership,” said General Manager David Scism. Charlie Scism is second generation and David Scism is the third generation to be part of the family-owned-andoperated business. Quality “new-to-you” vehicles are continuously added to the dealership’s inventory from a variety of sources. “We want to be a one-stop shop for our customers,” said David, “and we stand behind our vehicles because we want to protect your investment. That’s why most vehicles come with a lifetime powertrain warranty at no additional charge.”

He added that the dealership’s longstanding reputation is the customer’s guarantee. A rigorous 172-point check is performed on all pre-owned vehicles before they are moved onto the lot for sale. Allowing time to make sure the vehicle is in great condition. The hard-working sales team works with customers to ensure they find vehicle solutions that work for their lifestyle. “We consider our customers family and we aren’t in the business to sell a car and never see that customer again,” said David. “We want your business and your family’s business for life.” Sam Scism Ford employs 50 people from the community. “That’s 50 local families supported by a locally-owned business,” said Ashlie. “When

you buy a vehicle from Sam Scism Ford, you’re directly supporting local families and in turn, your local community.” Sam Scism Ford also believes in giving back to the community through countless organizations, events, donations and sponsorships. That’s yet another reason why it’s important to shop local.

HOW TO CHOOSE A FINAL RESTING PLACE

C.Z. Boyer & Sons Funeral Homes offer tips on selecting final resting place Consider burial options in funeral preplanning process

C

hoosing a final resting place can be preplanned or happen suddenly. While cemetery plots are most commonly purchased for immediate use, some people decide to purchase it as their final resting place while they are still living. Obviously, there are benefits for preplanning this step. Not only does it simplify this part of the funeral planning process, it also simplifies this decision for family as well. Sometimes families even buy multiple plots so loved ones can eventually be buried near one another. C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Homes Vice President Brian Boyer suggests individuals visit cemeteries, do some research and then make a list of questions after checking the grounds. Boyer said one thing to consider when selecting a final resting place is if the site has special meaning for that person. Some might say selecting a final resting place is similar to purchasing real estate because location plays a large part in choosing a cemetery plot or mausoleum. An individual’s final resting place might even have a special meaning to that person. Another consideration is to find out if the grounds are maintained. The property manager should be able to

Brian Boyer said one thing to consider when selecting a final resting place is if the site has special meaning for that person.

give details about ongoing maintenance and plans for the future. Boyer said individuals should visit a cemetery to see how it looks, if it’s been maintained and to answer a few questions. Are the graves leveled? Are the new graves properly tended? Is the grass cut? Have the stones and other areas been landscaped? Are the roads entering and exiting the cemetery maintained?” Yet another consideration in choosing a final resting place is to inquire about how a place will be maintained after the cemetery is full. What are the long-term plans to take care of the grounds?

“It might be 100 years down the road,” said Boyer, “but does the cemetery have an endowed care fund set up to maintain it?” Hillview Memorial Gardens, owned by C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Homes, is located on 11 acres on the south edge of Farmington off Westmeyer Road. It is a memorial park with flat markers and no upright headstones. There is a staff member who is dedicated to taking care of Hillview Memorial Gardens plot sales, answering questions regarding the cemetery or mausoleum, discussing payment options, and more. Boyer said Hillview

Memorial Gardens is an endowed cemetery. This means a percentage of each grave, mausoleum or niche sold goes to an endowed care fund at a local bank which is regulated by the state of Missouri. That fund is set aside to pay for the upkeep of the cemetery once it becomes full. The mausoleum at Hillview Memorial Gardens was constructed a few years ago to provide above-ground burial options for families. Caskets are placed in mausoleum crypts, or tandem crypts for spouses who plan to be buried together. Niches are also available, which is where cremains, or ashes, are placed.

“We have had several families who expressed their desire to have their loved ones buried above ground, so we felt this was an important addition to the grounds,” said Boyer. Regardless of what cemetery or mausoleum someone chooses as their final resting place, this location will honor a legacy for many years to come. It’s important to take the time to plan this final step to honor someone’s life.

HOW TO CHOOSE A FUNERAL FACILITY

Local funeral homes owned by several generations of family C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Homes offer personalized services

C

hoosing a funeral home or preplanning for a ceremony is not a task we ever enjoy, but it’s best to do this before loved ones are forced to make difficult decisions while grieving. There are several factors to consider when choosing a funeral facility, including the location, cost, services and more. Some people rely on friends or relatives suggestions when selecting a funeral home. Brian Boyer, vice president of C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Homes, said, “Asking questions is important when selecting a funeral facility.” Charles Boyer, Brian’s dad, shared, “There are special people in every community who can provide help and support during this difficult time. These include pastors, social workers, nurses and hospice care providers who are willing to share and possibly answer some of the questions you may have.” “I tell families that there’s no right or wrong way when you’re planning a service,” said Brian. “It’s up to the individual on what they want. Personalization, the meaningful representation that strives to reflect a person’s life is also important. Our staff knows that their attention to details will provide a grieving family needed comfort by making the service both personal and meaningful.” Brian said, “For us, we have

a large, dedicated veteran staff. That’s what I think sets us apart from others.” He said some of their nearly 20 staff members have worked in the industry for 30 years. His dad, now retired, was in the industry his entire life but still remains a part of the family business. The directors on staff have served the funeral industry with experience that ranges from 15 to 45 years, mostly here locally and with C. Z. Boyer & Son. “That speaks volumes in two different ways,” said Brian. “First, they care about what they do because it is a tough occupation to be in for such a long time, and second, it means they have made a personal commitment to do the job and provide for the families they serve.” The funeral home’s reputation is key here. “Whether it’s a memorial service, traditional funeral or graveside service, or celebration of their life, it’s of the utmost importance that we do everything we can for the family we’re serving.” Brian stated, “When I see our staff giving 110%, I see what funeral service is really about. It’s about caring, It’s about listening, and it’s all about serving to the best of our ability.” He continued, “That’s what our whole industry is based upon: taking care of that family to our utmost ability so they can properly memorialize their loved one. It’s what we do, and

we do it well.” C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home owns and operates five locations in St. Francois County. That operation includes the Hillview Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Mausoleum located in Farmington. Their primary location in Desloge is complemented by four additional facilities conveniently located in Farmington, Bonne Terre, Park Hills and Leadwood. For those families who may choose cremation as an alternative to a more traditional funeral service, Brian wants to remind families that every family served will have the assurance that the trained staff will provide those

HOW TO CHOOSE A SWING BED ‘NEXT STEPS’ PROGRAM

Patients ‘swing’ into skilled care through Next Steps Physical rehabilitation at Iron County Medical Center helps patients regain independence

I

ron County Medical Center has been offering compassionate care close to home since they opened in 2006. The hospital’s Next Steps program – a swing bed program – is yet another way staff are taking care of their patients. When rural hospitals are designated as critical-access hospitals, they are federallyapproved to use their patient rooms as temporary rooms for patients in the swing bed program to receive special care. There are times after surgery and hospitalization when a patient no longer needs acute care but is not yet strong enough to return to independent living. For those patients, ICMC offers a shortterm rehabilitation program, or swing bed program, called Next Steps. These patients transfer to ICMC’s Next Steps swing bed program to provide them with additional recovery time to help improve their physical functioning before being discharged to return home. Patients must meet specific criteria to qualify for a swing bed program. Examples are those who require any type of skilled nursing or additional care including patients who are not yet strong enough to return home, undergone orthopedic or other surgeries, those who require antibiotics or wound care, therapy, pain management, and more. Medicare and most insurance companies cover the cost of swing bed programs. ICMC Therapy Services

Director Allison Sanders said the Next Steps program provides physical, occupational and speech therapy rehabilitation for patients. “At Iron County Medical Center, we take pride in providing our own town and surrounding community with quality care with staff who are also from the community,” said Sanders. “We have lower patient-to-staff ratios, and patients receive more individualized care at our facility.” ICMC is a 15-bed facility with nurses, CNAs, Physicians and additional staff members on duty at all times. Sanders said the staff works together as a team to care for their patients. But their care goes beyond basic duties. They’ve been known to throw birthday parties, bring in special food and more for their patients. “We’re a big family,” said Sanders. “We truly care for our patients who also become family.” In fact, many of their patients are former hospital employees or who were part of when the facility was opened December 18, 2006. ICMC MSW Next Steps Transitional Care/Social Services Coordinator Mandy Harris said another advantage for patients who receive care at a smaller hospital is that the staff are actively involved in patients’ care. “You’ll see our hospital administrator on the floor checking on patients and staff,” said Harris. “You’ll

also find other staff interact with our patients, including our housekeeping and maintenance staffs. We all work together as a dedicated team.” Sanders said when patients have a choice to choose a swing bed program or nursing home, the obvious advantage is the 24-hour care they receive through ICMC’s Next Steps program. “If a patient has arrived here and started to decline in any way, we can do labs or imaging services immediately so they don’t have to be taken to another facility or transferred to another hospital for care,” said Sanders. Harris said their Next Steps program is producing very positive results. Recent data at ICMC shows 86% of their Next Steps patients are

returning home or to their previous living arrangement. The remaining percentage of patients are returning to their long-term care facility for specialized skills. Sanders and Harris both feel the one-on-one care their patients receive at ICMC makes them feel “at home.” “Our approach is a more personal approach,” said Sanders. “All our rooms are private with their own private bathrooms. Every room has a bright, colorful canvas-type acoustic panel that has been painted with different scenes.” In addition to the comfortable rooms with scenic views, there is a healing garden with pergola and ample seating. “Our groundskeeping staff maintain this lovely area,” said

Sanders. “When our patients feel well enough to go outside, they feel like they’re sitting on their porch or deck at home.” At ICMC, patients can “swing” into skilled care through the Next Steps program – the steps between hospital and home – to receive physical rehabilitation in order to regain their independence. “Our focus is always on improving our patients’ condition so they can return to independent living,” said Harris.

HOW TO CHOOSE A MONUMENT COMPANY

Mineral Area Monument offers everlasting tribute for loved ones Local business offers value, long-lasting respect for one’s heritage

M

ineral Area Monument offers the chance for customers to share their loved ones’ stories. “We help our customers to create a beautiful monument to remember their family because this is an everlasting tribute to their heritage,” said Tiffany Capstick. Tiffany and her brother Todd are co-owners of Mineral Area Monument in Farmington. They have extensive knowledge and experience in the monument business. Their family has been in the monument business for more than 85 years. The siblings purchased the business in 2011. Monuments have been an important part of remembering the lives of loved ones for thousands of years because they’re a celebration of someone’s life. Whether someone is choosing a monument for themselves or a loved one, they’re making an important investment. In order to find the perfect monument for a loved one, there are several things to consider: First, choose a monument company. The best companies have a large selection of stones and styles, and most display headstones onsite in various options. Monument companies offer different finishes in carved, sandblasted or polished options. Some companies

show inhouse samples while others display these by computer or catalog. When selecting a monument company, customers should consider the knowledge of employees regarding products and techniques used to create the stones. any drivers have become sleepy at some point while driving. Accidents can occur when drowsy drivers swerve or even fall asleep. But new technology exists that can help drivers to avoid this dangerous or even deadly situation. This technology is called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS. Simpler ADAS options like automatic wipers and headlights have already been part of vehicle technology for years. Now ADAS makes driving an even safer experience with new options such as a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian automatic emergency braking system, and automatic emergency braking system. This new technology, or sensing devices, are part of ADAS and are usually mounted behind a vehicle’s windshield, including cameras, computer imaging software, radars, and other sensors. This means that any damage which occurs to a vehicle’s windshield can cause these sensing devices to malfunction. This requires the ADAS to need calibration. ADAS calibration is the process of aligning these various sensing devices in one’s vehicle to once again function properly. A trained technician must perform a dynamic or static calibration. This professional should drive the vehicle

while the static calibration process uses tools to calibrate the ADAS. Vehicles that have been in a collision or have had the windshield or tires replaced should have its ADAS recalibrated. Because the ADAS is advanced technology, vehicle owners should choose a professional to recalibrate their ADAS. Depending on who they choose depends on the cost of this service. Ben Gamlin and Christy Ames, owners and managers of Curtis Glass Center in Park

Hills, take customer service very seriously. Gamlin said many newer vehicles now come standard with forward-facing cameras, and ADAS is a piece of computer equipment used to recalibrate those cameras. He said a recalibration is necessary when the windshield is replaced on the models that come with these forwardfacing cameras. “What is convenient with our facility having the technology to calibrate these systems is we are local,” said Gamlin. “There is no need for a

trip to the dealer, which can get very pricey.” He said Curtis Glass Center is flexible with completing calibrations in a timely manner. They also accept all insurance companies. Curtis Glass Center opened in 1978 and has proudly served the Parkland for almost 45 years. In addition to ADAS calibration, they offer automotive, business and residential glass replacement and repairs. “We take a lot of pride in our work and offer lifetime warranties on installations,”

said Gamlin. “We also take customer service very seriously because that’s who we are, we’re here to help our customers.”

HOW TO CHOOSE A ICE CREAM SHOP

Old Village Mercantile’s award-winning ice cream is handmade and delicious New, returning customers enjoy artisan ice cream, fudge and other treats

H

ow does one choose the best ice cream? A good quality ice cream is soft and smooth. It has a rich taste and comes in a variety of flavors. But there’s a place in Washington County where a special kind of ice cream is served. It’s award-winning handmade premium artisan ice cream. And that first bite is … magic. Cold, creamy and oh so delicious. Even the traditional flavors like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry are impressive. The specialty flavors – like Oreo fudge, banana split, Cookie Monster, orange cream sorbet, salted caramel fudge, butter pecan pie, and more – are unfortable. These heavenly creations, served in bowls or freshly baked treats, are sold year-round at Old Village Mercantile in Caledonia. Owners Nina and Steve Gilliam have owned the Old Village Mercantile for 20 years. It is an authentic 1909 general store and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “The general stores in the past were always at the center of their community,” said Nina. “We have really made that our mission, to be integrated within our community.” After two decades, the couple are now starting to see generations of smiles at the mercantile. “We now have generations

“Customers are welcomed into our store by our amazing staff,” said Nina. “We have excellent customer service, and we offer a variety of delicious and unique products and antiques. Visiting the Old Village Mercantile is more than a shopping trip. It’s an experience.” Caledonia’s old-fashioned general store serves up 600 varieties of candy, Amish fudge, homemade ice cream, coffee and antiques. But the artisan ice cream is perhaps the mercantile’s biggest attraction. It’s made fresh onsite by retired teacher Randy Huff. He often uses homemade baked goods and candy from the store to create his unique flavors. Caledonia’s Old Village Mercantile takes customers back to a simpler time. It’s a memorable experience for the whole family. And it’s definitely the place to choose ice cream. As the nostalgic song from the 1920s goes, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.”

HOW TO CHOOSE A DANCE STUDIO

Well-respected studio offers many opportunities for dance students

O’Dell’s Dance Center teachers encourage students’ creativity, provide quality instruction

W

hen a child expresses an interest to learn dance, it’s imperative that parents first research local studios before selecting one. First, the studio should have a professional staff. Do they have experience in teaching and dancing professionally? Young dancers need a solid foundation in technique from which to build. Second, the studio should offer a variety of classes taught by qualified dance instructors. Third, performance opportunities should be available for students. Does the studio offer competitive and non-competitive groups? Is there an end-of-the-year performance? Each of these areas are important in creating an overall successful dance experience for students of all ages. These guidelines will help parents select the perfect dance studio for their child. There is a well-known dance studio located in St. Francois County that exceeds these guidelines. In fact, O’Dell’s Dance Center has been helping students reach their creative potential since 1959 when Jerry O’Dell started the studio in Flat River. There were no studios in town, and she wanted her daughter Geri to learn dance. The studio moved to Desloge in 1964. Geri took over the studio when she was 19 and later sold

it to Dee Wampler Courtois. Shortly after, a 5-year-old girl named Mandi started taking lessons from Dee. In 1987, Bev Holst bought the studio. Mandi became a teaching assistant at age 16 under Holst’s guidance and became a full-time teacher at 19. That little girl had grown into a beautiful dancer and became a role model for other dancers. In 2011, Holst sold the

studio. The proud new owner of O’Dell’s Dance Center was Mandi Herzog. She opened O’Dell’s with 75 students and the motto “where every student is a star.” As the fifth owner of the studio, Herzog expanded to a larger location in Desloge with more teachers and assistants. Now, nearly 200 students are enrolled in various classes including tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, gymnastics, acrobatics, tumbling and music theatre.

Students learn skills and perform in an annual spring recital while some students also participate in dance competitions throughout the year. Herzog is assisted by Mackenzie Risenhoover who has worked with Herzog since she first purchased the studio. “I’m truly blessed to live this life and pass my love of dance on to my students in the community where I grew up and am the proud owner of my

childhood studio,” said Herzog. “It’s truly a dream come true.” Herzog and husband Eric have three children: Luci, Bucklei and Harris.

HOW TO CHOOSE A MEDICAL CANNABIS DISPENSARY

Heya Wellness Dispensary offers various products, methods of relief Top-notch customer service, professionalism and patience allow local dispensary to help patients

I

f someone wants to ensure they’re getting high-quality medical marijuana while also receiving attentive service from budtenders, how do they choose the best dispensary? Choosing a medical marijuana dispensary can be a challenge, but following a few quick steps can make one’s dispensary experience as easy and stress-free as possible. Customers should feel safe, welcomed and supported at the dispensary. The staff should inform customers of their options, benefits, quality and prices of the products; and answer questions. Heya Wellness Dispensary, opened in June 2021, is the premier cannabis dispensary in the Southeast Missouri region. There are also locations in Eldon, Kirksville and St. Peters. “Our entire staff is thoroughly trained on your body’s Endocannabinoid system (which everyone has!),” said Store Manager Kyle Kurtz, “and how different products and methods of administration can play a great role in providing patients the relief and effects they are seeking.” A wide range of cannabis products are available to suit people’s medicinal needs. The hard-working staff strive to assist their customers in developing knowledge and regimens to aid in achieving desired effects. According to Kurtz, Heya Wellness is the only dispensary serving the community that

is vertically integrated. While their retail license allows them to service the community, this means Heya Wellness also cultivates and manufactures their own products. “This allows us a level of insight on our products that is often lost when they must be purchased 100% from outside sources,” said Kurtz. “The level of testing that occurs in our industry is vast, and rightfully so.” He said knowing the

products from seed to the store shelves ensures they are consistently providing the best. Another thing that sets Heya Wellness apart from other dispensaries is topnotch customer service. The staff meet every patient with professionalism and patience, and this allows them to educate and ensure every decision is made with complete confidence. Kurtz said cannabis research is continuing to grow

each day. For anyone who has strayed from cannabis due to prior experience or understanding, they’re encouraged to research, converse with local dispensaries, and find new avenues and answers which may be beneficial. “The market is young, and the stigma surrounding cannabis is still very real,” said Kurtz. “Being such, it is our mission at Heya to provide a comfortable atmosphere for

our community to learn how certain products may help them and those they love.”

HOW TO CHOOSE A PEST CONTROL SERVICE

Local pest control company works to build relationships with customers Parkland Pest Control offers many kinds of insect inspections, treatments

V

arious kinds of insects can find their way into homes or businesses. Some may even cause costly damage to the building’s structure. At some point, homeowners or business owners might even deal with an infestation of some kind. For issues beyond homeowners’ or business owners’ control, it’s likely time to call a professional. How does a homeowner or business owner choose a pest control service? The first step is to make a list of potential companies in the area who provided services, and then research the backgrounds of each business. Obtaining information through the business’s websites and online reviews is a good approach. Mandy and Jason Denby have owned Parkland Pest since 2019. Mandy answers customers’ calls and schedules service visits. She said the most important thing she feels customers should consider when choosing a pest control service is if the company listens to their customers. “I get a lot of people who really appreciate the time I take to explain our treatments and the habits of the bugs that we’re treating,” she said. “Some things work while others won’t for situations. Taking the time to explain how the treatments work helps our customers understand the overall process.”

Mandy said when she talks to customers, they often say other companies simply go into the home or business, spray and leave. “To us, it’s about building a relationship with someone,” she said. Customer service is something else to consider when selecting a pest control service. “Customer service is everything,” said Mandy. “Getting a referral from a customer speaks volumes if someone is willing to refer us to someone else because they are satisfied with our services.” Mandy said she also wants to speak to customers if they have a complaint so they can work together to remedy the issue. “We want to come to a conclusion to find something to work,” she said, “because it’s all about building relationships, communicating and understanding a situation.” Customers should also inquire about what pest control options are available when they are seeking services. Parkland Pest offers many services for their customers including treatments for spiders, ants, wasps, hornets, ladybugs and other insects; small rodents; cockroaches; and more. In addition, they do termite inspections and treatments. There is one specific treatment which Parkland Pest performs on a weekly basis that other local companies do not:

bed bug treatment. “What sets us apart is that we do bed bug treatment as well,” said Mandy. She explained that bed bugs are a “big thing in our area.” She receives daily calls from customers who are seeking treatment for these pests, and their company does multiple weekly treatments for the insects. “You can’t just go to the store to buy something and they’re going to go away,” she said. “I answer questions and try to help people.” She said usually family or friends who have a bed bug

infestation don’t immediately realize this and can pass them on to other family or friends. Often people stay at a hotel or other place and are unaware of an insect issue. Mandy explained that bed bugs can hide in discreet places such as bedframes, nightstands, walls and more. “Usually, people do not realize they have a bed bug issue until three or four months into the problem,” she said. “Trying to trace your steps back to see who was the culprit or where the bed bugs came from is nearly impossible.” Mandy said Parkland Pest

genuinely cares about their customers and their situations. “We have five children and you never know what could be going on,” she said. “We treat our home and other people’s homes as if it was our home because we’d want someone else to do the same for us.”

He said some hospitals talk about the “patients always come first” philosophy, but that actually happens at ICMC. “You will actually see it in use here at Iron County Medical Center,” he said, “because we truly care about our patients and want the best for them.” Gallaher said one of the radiology department’s goals is to implement a low-dose CT lung cancer screening test within the next year.
