cess. • Commission floor plans. It’s a good idea to have plans drawn up by an architect. Knowing your exact square footage has tax-savings implications: If your home office is your principal workplace, you may qualify for a home office tax deduction (for what the IRS calls “business use of your home”) based on the overall area of that space. Plus, an architect may be able to see beyond walls to find potential spatial configurations you might not have considered. • Define your workspace. Working from home may be an escape from the monotony of cubicle land, but it’s still important to define your workspace. If it’s not possible to turn an existing room into your office, consider using an uncluttered portion of your basement, attic or garage. A tax deduction applies only to space used exclusively as a home office, so simply putting a desk in your living room doesn’t make you eligible, nor will it prevent distractions.

• Get comfortable. Don’t just grab an extra dining room chair. Chair designs have improved thanks to ergonomic research over the last half century. Choose one that will keep your posture vertical and your mind sharp.
• Grow something. Not only are there health benefits associated with keeping plants indoors, they’ll be there when you need to take a break. A little gentle pruning can prove meditative, and can be a good way to refocus.
• Get lit. Ideally, your home office will have at least one window, but also invest in a swing-arm desk lamp to provide ample illumination for concentrated tasks.
• Keep a schedule. Online newsfeeds and day-today housework can be distracting. Approach working at home with the same level of professionalism you’d bring to an office setting. Display a clock and wall calendar for visual reminders of deadlines.
• Clear clutter. Avoid toppling stacks of documents and make the recycling bin your new best friend. A small filing cabinet should be able to hold all your records, and many home furnishings can be repurposed if a filing cabinet feels too corporate.
• Communicate. Responding promptly to emails and calls lets co-workers know that you’re reliable. Substitute face-to-face time with FaceTime (or
another video-enabled communication service). Thanks to such technology, you can share space with co-workers a continent away. • Take breaks. Anyone familiar with water cooler chatter knows that offices are highly social. That’s an aspect of your day that can feel like it’s missing. So step outside every few hours; wave to your neighbor or walk to a coffee shop. For more home office tips, visit topicarchitecture. com. By adopting a few design strategies and organizational habits, you can get your best work done from your home office. (StatePoint)

Quick DIY Plumbing Tips for
Parents of Teenagers
N
o one ever said parenting teens would be easy, however you may not have considered the beating it can put on your household drains.
With teens piling on experimental hair products and staying on-trend with long, flowing locks, bathrooms may see hours of hair washing, brushing and styling each week -- meaning feet of discarded hair making its way into drains, along with sticky hairsprays and gels. Before you know it, the sink has stopped draining and there is a pool of standing water in the shower. Does all this sound familiar? Lifestyle bloggers Krissy Higgens and Shelby Barone, both moms of teenagers, know the reality of the plumbing upkeep that can sometimes be required. Here are a few insights for keeping drains clear, clean and in working order. • Be sure your sink and shower drains have mesh screens to catch at least some of the hair before it goes down the drain. Get a little help, and ask teens to clean screens after showering and styling their hair. If it’s been several months since your teenagers have made their beds or you’ve seen the floor of their rooms, you know that this may not actually get done daily, however it’s a good place to start. • Consider tried-and-true methods. “My parents used Roto-Rooter to clear drains when I was a teenager, and I knew that if it worked for them in the ’80s, it would work for me now,” says Barone, author of the OC Mom Blog. “It is safe on all drains, and that gave me the peace of mind in knowing that the product wouldn’t harm our pipes.” Roto-Rooter has a line of products specifically designed to help tackle this task quickly and affordably. The formula packed into RotoRooter’s Clog Removers has the right viscosity to penetrate and soak into a clog, breaking it down from all sides and leaving drains clear in a few minutes. Safe on all pipes and septic sys-

and styling. This is an easy task that teens can remember to do on a daily basis.
“I pretty much keep Roto-Rooter in stock in my bathroom closet so that it’s always on hand when we need it. Living in an older house makes having this in house even more important,” says Higgens, author of All in a Day’s Work blog.
To learn more about Roto-Rooter products, visit rotorooter-products.com.
• You can also help maintain clear drains by flushing them with hot water after showering
There’s no need to tell teens to change their style or routine! With some simple tools, you can encourage new styles, lengths and trends without a second thought about how your drains might handle all of the experimentation. (StatePoint)

Steps To Save Energy In Your Home R
educing your energy use at home is a win-win for your wallet and the planet. Not only can it save you money on your bills now, but it could also improve your home’s resale value, if you know which steps to take. These simple tips can help.
Form Smart Habits Energy smart habits can help you save a great deal of energy. Be sure to unplug any battery chargers or power adapters when they are not in use and always turn off the lights when leaving a room. In the kitchen, be sure to keep a clutter-free fridge for better efficiency. Also, don’t hem and haw over what to eat while the refrigerator door is open. When cooking, cover pots and pans to keep the heat in and the kitchen cool. Make Smart Swap Outs Many electronics continue to use energy even when they are switched off, however, you may wish to switch to ENERGY STAR certified alternatives, which are designed to conserve this energy usage, while still maintaining functions like clock displays, channel settings and remote control functions. Also, seek out the ENERGY STAR certified label when shopping for appliances like washers, dryers and refrigerators.

Replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs is simple, easy and effective. You can save up to $70 in annual energy costs by replacing your 5 most frequently used light bulbs or fixtures with ENERGY STAR certified ones.
Know Your Score Another great step to save energy is to measure your home’s energy efficiency with a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index Score from the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), a non-profit standards-making body for building energy efficiency rating and certification systems.
Seal Up Drafts Weather stripping, caulking and other simple measures, like closing the flue damper of your fireplace when it’s not in use, can go a long way towards keeping you more comfortable in all types of weather, and improving your home’s energy efficiency.
More than 2 million homes across the country have a HERS Index Score, which tells homeowners and prospective buyers how their homes compare to other similar ones in terms of energy usage. Think of it as the home industry’s version of the MPG (miles per gallon) rating that you find in the auto industry. The lower a home
“Knowing your score can help you evaluate where to make changes to your home, from sealing leaks in your heating and cooling distribution system to updating your roof in order to be more energy efficient,” says Steve Baden, executive director of RESNET. faces like wooden or tile floors with area rugs. Add some warmth to hallways and narrow foyers with runners.
1. Use bold colors. Colors have the power to create specific moods. to ensure a welcoming atmosphere, make sure you select shades wisely. the science behind color psychology can help you choose paint, upholstery and more. Warm colors like red, orange and yellow make people feel more cozy and intimate. Cooler colors like grey and green are better for invoking calm, and are used to make a room feel more spacious.
3. Breathe new life into spaces. indoor plants can give life to an otherwise stagnant living area. For those not blessed with a green thumb, consider artificial plants. High-quality options can look very realistic and will save you time on care and maintenance. Or, for variety, add a simple vase to the kitchen table and brighten up the room with a new bouquet of fresh cut flowers each week.
2. Add a touch of softness. Use plush, cozy materials, such as decorative pillows and throws to create inviting places to sit. Soften hard sur-
4. Make music. A piano brings a level of elegance to any room, but you don’t have to overspend to get a beautiful sound or visual. New
digital pianos reproduce the subtle nuances of the world’s finest grand pianos at various price points. For example, the Celviano Grand Hybrid Piano from Casio has the technology to produce an authentic grand piano experience, but doesn’t take up as much space or cost as much. Plus, since it’s digital, you won’t have to worry about maintenance and tuning. 5. Mood lighting. From candles to unique fixtures to bright open windows, the type of lighting used to illuminate a room sets its tone. Choose curtains and candles for cozy, romantic nights. Draw them open in the day for bright, sun-lit spaces. install interesting fixtures as a focal point in empty hallways and in living spaces. (StatePoint)

The experts at Freddie Mac offer the following tips for getting organized and prepared for the unexpected. • Compile information. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Financial First Aid Kit includes fillable checklists, and is a handy and free way to compile important information, such as driver’s license numbers, birth certificates and Social Security numbers, bank accounts, insurance policies, mortgage statements, credit cards, taxes, health insurance cards, accounts, medications taken and any other health records, as well as household contact information, including landlords, doctors, schools, employers, contractors, lawyers, and insurance agents. Be sure to revisit this information periodically and update it as needed. • Review your paperwork. Review your insurance policies and financial paperwork to be sure that they are current. Update any policies as soon as possible, so you are not without coverage when you need it most. After an emergency, contact your insurance agents about your policies to find out what you can expect, including an explanation of benefits. For example, many homeowners policies cover alternative living expenses that can help provide you and your family with temporary housing needs, meals and other life necessities.

Home Maintenance Projects Everyone Should Tackle
I
f you’ve been putting off chores, you’re not alone, but it could cost you. In fact, a national survey from Erie Insurance shows many Americans are putting themselves and their homes at financial risk by delaying important home maintenance tasks.
Make sure you’re protected by focusing on these five areas: • The Roof. Twenty-three percent of homeowners admit they never inspect their roof or have it inspected unless there is a problem, according to the Erie Insurance survey. Unfortunately, replacing a roof is also one of the biggest expenses a homeowner may have if not maintained properly. Nationally, the average homeowner spends about $6,600 to install a new roof, but prices can soar upwards of $20,000. Don’t be stuck with a hefty roof repair bill. Have it inspected to see if any shingles are damaged and need to be replaced. • The Gutters. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear of debris. Clogged gutters can lead to major issues like uneven floors, cracks in walls and interior water damage. This type of claim, also known as seepage, is a maintenance issue and often not covered under your home insurance policy. To prevent any major issues, clean gutters at least twice a year . • The Dryer Exhaust Duct. Does it take you two to three cycles to dry a load of laundry? If so, you may need to clean your dryer vent. One in five (21 percent) admit they never clean their clothes dryer ducts, unless they have a problem. But lint build-up can catch fire easily. Over 15,000 dryer fires occurred nationwide from 2010-2014, with the majority being ignited by dust, fiber and lint, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Avoid this disaster with a thorough cleaning at least once a year. • The Fireplace Chimney. Erie Insurance found nearly half (46 percent) of people who
(c) gmcgill/stock.Adobe.com own a home with a fireplace never have their chimneys cleaned. However, uncleaned chimneys are a leading cause of structure fires, reports the National Fire Protection Association. So, get the chimney cleaned before the next time you find yourself tossing logs in the hearth to keep the house toasty, and then have it cleaned annually. • The Sump Pump and Pit. Sump pumps remove excess water from homes that would otherwise cause property damage. It’s important to clean a sump pump and its pit annually to keep basements dry and help prevent mold growth and water damage. For more information on how you can protect
your home through the seasons, visit www. ErieInsurance.com. Now that you have your checklist, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get going. Whether you’re a DIYer or prefer hiring a professional, crossing these projects off your to-do list will help ensure you’re safe and secure.
