Relay For Life Guest Speaker ‌The 2017 Madison/Iron County Relay for Life guest speaker was Shanna Hayes. She is the Relay For Life Community Manager at the American Cancer Society. This is what Shanna said: On behalf of the American Cancer Society, I first want to thank all of you for coming out today. We have gathered as a community, determined that those who are facing cancer will be supported, that those who have lost their battle will NOT be forgotten, and that, together, we will continue to fight back. The American Cancer Society relies on more than 100 years of evidence and proven results to prevent cancer, save lives, and di-

minish suffering from the disease. There’s hardly a person or family who hasn’t benefited, directly or indirectly, from our work to eliminate cancer – all cancers – as a major health problem. The numbers will never tell the whole story. They can’t show the tears, hugs and smiles of patients, friends and families. But what they do show is still amazing. By leading the way and amplifying the efforts of millions of researchers, volunteers, donors and other supporters, the Society has contributed to the tremendous impact made against cancer. Since 1991, cancer death rates have declined by 25%. That’s more than

1.7 million cancer deaths avoided. Today, nearly 500 lives are saved from cancer each day. It’s a whole new world, one in which two out of three people are now surviving the disease. That achievement is due in part to the Society’s dedicated efforts to transform the disease from deadly to treatable, and from treatable to preventable. We are celebrating 20 years here in Madison County, so I wanted to let you know of some of the most impactful breakthroughs in the fight against cancer going back 20 years ago. In 1997, the nation celebrated the first downturn

in the cancer mortality rate In 1998, the first overall decrease in new cases of cancer was documented In 2001, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, ACSCAN was formed with the goal of urging lawmakers to join the fight against cancer. Today, ACSCAN is the leading cancer advocacy organization. 2002, the Society launched its Clinical Trials Matching Service, which linked patients to lists of trials available In 2003, obesity is linked to cancer through data collected in the Cancer Prevention Studies. In 2005, the FDA approved a new lung cancer therapy In 2006, the FDA approved a vaccine against the strains of the human papilloma virus that cause most cervical cancers In 2009, tobacco products marketing practices were regulated In 2011, 2 more Society funded researchers win the Nobel prize, bringing the total to 46 winners who have received ACS grants. That total is now 47 Society funded Nobel prize winners Here are some of our most recent overall statistics: $95 Million in Funding has been invested for cancer research grants $4.5 Billion Invested in cancer research since 1946 There are 800 Grantees Supported at any given time throughout the country Over 1 Million Requests

Shanna Hayes from people seeking information and support 267,000 Nights of Free Lodging at American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® facilities 50,265 Patients Helped to navigate through the health care system 10,990 Peer Support Services Provided to breast cancer patients 34,470 People Helped With appearance-related side effects of treatment through programs like Look Good Feel Better. The vision of the Amer-

ican Cancer Society is a world free from the pain and suffering of cancer. Together with our millions of supporters, we are getting closer to that goal every day. On behalf of the American Cancer Society and from the bottom of my heart, I say thank you – thank you for the dollars and awareness that all of you have raised for our Relay. Because of you, we have a “Future.” We can … AND WILL … continue to move forward.

Luminaria, Closing Ceremonies ‌The Luminaria Ceremony allows family and friends to purchase “In Honor Of”, “In Memory Of” and “Loving Caregiver” bags to be lit for the solemn ceremony. The Luminaria Ceremony was outside on the driveway area in front of the Middle School. Following the Luminaria Ceremony, there was the announcement of silent auction winners, the Fight Back Ceremony, a final themed lap, and the closing ceremony. During the closing ceremony, Event Chair April Sarakas read the following:

Relay Reflections

I am tired. I smell. My feet hurt. My eyes feel like grit, and my head is pounding from lack of sleep….but I am grateful. I have all of my body parts with which I was born. I have all of my hair. I didn’t lose my breakfast in a bucket. I can hold my

children. My house is a wreck. My car is full of junk. My children are exhausted, hungry and dirty…but I am grateful. I can clean my house and my car. I can bathe my children and feed them supper. I can read them a book and rock them to sleep while filling myself up with their clean little smells and my arms with warmth. I will collapse in my bed tonight and pray for all the people we raised money for through Relay For Life. And, I will cry for all the people we were too late to help. I will give thanks for every minute of my life and for all the blessings in it. I will never ask myself why I wear myself out raising money for cancer…because I know why. It’s not for my mom, who is a cancer survivor, or for friends who have PHOTOS BY ALAN KOPITSKY, DEMOCRAT NEWS‌ died from cancer, or even my Retired Madison County Sheriff David Lewis, Retired Fredericktown Police Chief Keith DeSpain, and Madison County Sheriff husband and children. I do it Katy McCutcheon read the names during the Luminaria Ceremony. because……I CAN! More Relay For Life Photos at www.democratnewsonline.com
