Brookhaven and Lincoln County see industrial growth Brookhaven and Lincoln County’s economy is a diverse mixture of long established distribution and logistics companies to forest products manufacturing to cutting edge advanced manufacturing and thriving locally owned retail. In addition, the leadership of the city, county, Chamber and economic development alliance have partnered to put programs and initiates in place to keep our economy growing strong. The Brookhaven Industrial Park is home to more than 20 facilities and the Brookhaven Municipal Airport. The park supports more than 2000 direct jobs and generates more than 300 truckloads of products or raw materials per day. With international companies such as Aptiv, American Railcar Industries, and Wal-Mart Distribution, along with national and regional companies McLane Southern and Rex Lumber, the Brookhaven Industrial Park is truly an economic engine in Southwest Mississippi. A few years ago, leaders from Lincoln County, the City of Brookhaven, the chamber of commerce and the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Economic Development Alliance collaborated on a plan to further develop Linbrook Business Park, the newest industrial area of our community. Those plans included site improvements, further utility upgrades, and a state-ofthe-art speculative industrial building. All of our community stakeholders came to support the improvements and to construct an industrial building in order to make Linbrook Business Park a more attractive place for a new industry. This past year, the planning and partnership and the improvements paid off.

On Feb. 25, 2020, Governor Tate Reeves announced that Keystone Electric Manufacturing Corporation was expanding into Linbrook Business Park. Keystone, based in Des Moines, Iowa, picked Brookhaven as its newest location to invest. The company will construct components for electrical substations. This high-tech process will bring dozens of new, high paying jobs to Brookhaven and millions in new investment and payroll. The chamber could not be more proud of our newest company and the partnership between the city, county, and Economic Development Alliance that allowed Keystone to expand in our community. The Brookhaven Tourism Council has built a unique brand for Brookhaven. The council will continue to invest in events and activities that draw visitors to Brookhaven. We invite you to look us up on the web and various social media platforms. The council is committed to expanding our festivals and attractions so that we can grow to be known as a regional center for families looking for fun. The economic future for Brookhaven and Lincoln County is bright. With our mix of traditional manufacturing and distribution, our strong retail and downtown sector, an emerging tourism sector and newly announced industrial growth, there is true excitement for the future of our community and our industry. — Garrick Combs is the executive director of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Economic Development Alliance and Chamber of Commerce.

Christmas parade A Brookhaven tradition spanning five decades, the annual Christmas parade is one of the most highly anticipated Chamber events each year. The parade is held the first Thursday evening of December and draws thousands of spectators, filling downtown with lights, music, and tons of

Christmas joy. Each year, Miss Merry Christmas and a grand marshal are chosen to lead the parade. A host of spectacular floats from local businesses, churches, dance groups and scouts enjoy waving to the crowds to ring in the holiday season. A crowd favorite each year are

the talented marching bands. Make sure you stay until the end, because Santa and his host of helpers throw out candy to wrap up the parade route. With the new addition of our downtown lighting project, the Christmas parade is now more festive than ever.

Downtown Jazzed Up Mardi Gras The “Downtown Jazzed Up” event is the brainchild of several members of the downtown association, the chamber’s Creative Economy Committee and the Brookhaven Tourism Council. The main objective of the Mardi Gras event is to promote local dining and retail and to bring the community together to enjoy the city’s newly renovated spaces in the downtown area, all while remaining a family-friendly evening. Local retailers keep their doors open well after normal Saturday hours while pedestrians enjoy historic tours guided by local volunteers, including students from Brookhaven High School.

Directly following the jazz concert, a traditional Second Line parade led by an authentic brass band will walk down Cherokee Street with beads, cups and stuffed animals being given out to parade-goers. Needless to say, Downtown Jazzed Up is a major success and the committees are in the planning process to host the next event this coming Mardi Gras season. If you are interested in being involved contact the Chamber of Commerce.

Baseball complex is ‘second to none’ The Lincoln Civic Center Baseball Complex hosted its first Dixie Youth games in 2016. The five-field complex replaced aging ball fields at Keystone. “We’re excited about the opportunity to allow all kids within Lincoln County the opportunity to play organized baseball on a complex that is second to none in the state of Mississippi, while keeping the entry fee as economical as possible so that no kid is not afforded that opportunity,” civic center manager Quinn Jordan said. Games are played on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at the Lincoln Civic Center Baseball Complex located at 1120 Beltline Road next to the Hansel King Sports Complex. “Four of the fields are 220 feet long, and the fifth is 300 to center with an 8-foot fence. We will play the majority of our 7and 8-year-old, 9- and 10-year-old and 11and 12-year-old ball on those four fields.” The Dixie Youth Baseball franchise will be exclusively under the management umbrella of the Lincoln Civic Center. Jordan said the baseball complex will continue to have a positive economic impact on Lincoln County. “I would say it’s one of the biggest economic impact opportunities we’ve had in years here in Lincoln County,” Jordan said. “We’re going to bring in a lot of funds and a lot of opportunity, and that’s what we’re here to do. We first owe it, as leaders of the community, you owe a debt to your citizens, but also then you owe your citizens a chance to get some return on that investment and we want to do that with the complex.” The complex was host to the 2019 Dixie Youth Invitational World Series.

LINCOLN CIVIC CENTER EVENTS The Lincoln Civic Center, located at 1096 Belt Line Drive NE in Brookhaven, offers a number of events and activities throughout the year. It annually hosts horse shows, school reunions, beauty pageants, the Lincoln County Wildlife Expo, rodeos, fairs and other events. For a schedule of events, visit www. lincolnciviccenter.com.

Education in Brookhaven and Lincoln County BROOKHAVEN ACADEMY

Brookhaven Academy is an independent school that helps develop students into mature young adults who are prepared to succeed intellectually, physically and spiritually. “Our mission at Brookhaven Academy is to provide a Christian-based, college preparatory curriculum in which each student is challenged to achieve excellence,” said Brian Emory, BA’s director of development. The school, which is not affiliated with any particular denomination of Christianity, offers education from K-3 through 12th grade. The elementary school uses curriculum that covers writing, reading, math, language, science, social science and the Bible.

BROOKHAVEN SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Brookhaven School District offers a wide range of programs, including a thriving Mississippi Scholars program and a Rising Scholars program. Superintendent Roderick Henderson hopes to help Brookhaven improve its accountability ratings. His goals include ensuring all teachers are working to grow students and that all students are growing. Henderson believes a key to BSD’s success is motivating and developing students through a variety of extracurricular and academic programs.

LINCOLN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Lincoln County School District focuses on the communities surrounding the schools to help students thrive. The district is comprised of Bogue Chitto Attendance Center, Enterprise Attendance Center, Loyd Star Attendance Center and West Lincoln Attendance Center, each operating as its own K-12 school. David Martin took on the head position at the Lincoln County School District in 2020. “With vision and commitment, we can make our school system even stronger, providing greater opportunities for our students and, in the process, serving as a catalyst in attracting business and industry to this region of Mississippi,” he said.

Copiah-Lincoln Community College

continues expansion of facilities, programs Despite the many challenges COVID-19 presented, Copiah-Lincoln Community College continued to provide the high-quality education for which it is known. Students returned to campus in the fall with a “Protect Our Pack” plan in place. Although some campus events had to be canceled, events like Homecoming, the annual Trillium pageant, and Spring Fling carried on with added precautions. The college continued with facility upgrades, construction projects and campus beautification projects. “Co-Lin’s dedicated faculty and staff and outstanding student body made the most of what was a very challenging year,” said Co-Lin President Dr. Jane Hulon Sims. “We worked to overcome, adapt, and thrive as the Co-Lin family.” For starters, the Cosmetology program on the Wesson Campus unveiled a complete renovation in the fall, with brand new workstations, lighting, paint and furniture. Appointments are open to the public for those who are eager to see the newly renovated space. Outdoor picnic tables were a wel-

30 39601

comed addition to all three campuses, and students took full advantage of the outdoor dining opportunities. At H. L. Stone Stadium, the new digital scoreboard made its debut during the fall semester at Wolf Pack football games and provided the perfect venue to host student movie nights in a socially distanced fashion. With the abbreviated football season as it was, the Blue Wave Show Band only had the chance to show off its stellar new uniforms at one home game. Look for the 2021 season to be the true reveal of the new gear. The Wolves and Lady Wolves Tennis teams played their first seasons on the new eight-court tennis complex (located where the soccer fields were previously). The facility also offers additional parking for both tennis and softball. After a three-year hiatus, Co-Lin soccer was reinstated as a varsity sport for both men and women. The teams play on the turf field at H. L. Stone Stadium. The Natchez Campus completed the new Diesel Lab expansion which added 4,500

square feet of hands-on training space for students. Another milestone worth celebrating is the graduation of the first class of students in the Paramedic program on the Natchez Campus. The Simpson County Center celebrated its 15th anniversary in September 2020. It also welcomed the first group of students to the new $6 million Career-Technical Building during the fall semester. In addition, the new President’s Home is completed and occupied. The college was once again recognized as a ‘Great College to Work For’ and received recognition from the Southern

Association of Colleges with Associate Degrees for Co-Lin’s COVID-19 plan and implementation. In addition, the Associate Degree Nursing program was ranked as one of Mississippi’s Top Five nursing programs. Co-Lin continues to expand instructional programs and training opportunities, such as the addition of the new Electrical Lineman training program which saw its first group of 14 graduates in the Spring of 2021. An agreement was signed with the University of West Alabama to provide increased benefits to Co-Lin students that transfer to UWA af-

ter Co-Lin. Thanks to the generous support of Georgia-Pacific in Monticello, an engineering lab was established on the Wesson Campus. As you visit Co-Lin this summer, you’ll find our campuses busy in preparation for the Fall 2021 semester. We’re painting several career-technical labs, adding new windows and doors at Franklin and Simpson residence halls, making upgrades at Wolf Hollow Golf Course, updating campus signage and more. As always, keep up with all things Co-Lin on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and at www.colin.edu.

Southwest CC lays foundation for success Just about 20 minutes down I-55 from Brookhaven lies the 150-acre campus of Southwest Mississippi Community College.

32 39601

With a population of approximately 2,000 students, Southwest provides post-secondary education in a variety of vocational and

academic programs. The programs allow for students to become successful in many ways. The college’s biggest vocational programs are the nursing program and the process operations technology program. Southwest also started an Honors Institute to help those who have excelled academically in the past. Students can qualify if they have scored at least a 23 on the ACT, joined Phi Theta Kappa or have received a recommendation from a Southwest instructor. Southwest also opened the Student Success Center in 2012, which offers tutoring in areas that students may be deficient in. Peer tutoring and professional tutoring are both offered. The connection the college has with the community is strong. Summit and McComb are both receptive and supportive of the community. Southwest helps with economic development by providing a solid foundation for the first two years of college credit and providing coursework for a wide range of vocational programs.

KDMC: Quality healthcare, close to home The benefit of living in a small town with big-city healthcare is what Brookhaven and Lincoln County have to offer their residents. King’s Daughters Medical Center has been a part of the community for over 100 years and its commitment to this community has never been stronger. Our first location was the Brookhaven Sanitarium located on Chickasaw St. in 1914. The second location was established in 1922 on the corner of North Jackson and West Congress St. and included a nursing school. In 1964, a new facility was constructed at the current location on Hwy. 51 North and has evolved into a leader for providing patient centered healthcare to this community. In 1998, a name change was made from King’s Daughters Hospital to King’s Daughters Medical Center to reflect the ongoing commitment to the community and its healthcare needs. The mission statement — “Always providing Quality Health and Wellness in a Christian Environment”— is not just a few

words. It is the backbone of KDMC and how it treats patients. KDMC has been continually recognized by numerous agencies for patient satisfaction, patient safety and overall patient care. Modern Health Care’s Best Place to Work in health care has recognized KDMC as a “Best Places to Work” eight of the last nine years and the last four consecutive years. KDMC is committed to building a healthcare system that our community deserves. KDMC has developed its out-patient clinical services and now operates KDMC Medical Clinic and KDMC Specialty Clinic, along with KDMC Pediatric & Adolescent Clinic and KDMC Sports Medicine Orthopaedic & Spine Clinic. In addition to these family practices, internist and specialized practices, KDMC offers niche services in the following areas: Vein Center, Infusion Center, Sleep Center, Vision Center, Wound Care, Therapy Center and most recently KDMC Behavioral

Wellness Center. In keeping with the mission statement that mentions “quality health and wellness” KDMC has the community’s health at heart with KDMC Fitness Center and KDMC Performance Center. Any age, any sport — KDMC has you covered from health and fitness to training at a high level for competition. David Culpepper, King’s Daughters’ Director of Marketing said, “We are constantly looking for new service lines and opportunities to meet our community’s healthcare needs.” “One great example of this was our staff’s response during the pandemic — administering the Covid vaccines to thousands of people in Southwest Mississippi. Once they became available our staff volunteered their Saturdays to administer the vaccine and give hope to so many in our community. Meeting the need of the community when it’s needed most.” King’s Daughters Medical Center Caring for our community. 39601 33

Brookhaven Little Theatre

The Brookhaven Little Theatre is a community staple. Founded in 1968, it is one of the oldest continually running community theaters in Mississippi. The first production was “You Can’t Take It With You.” Since its founding, more than 150 plays have been performed. In 1982, the board of trustees purchased the historic Haven theater on Cherokee St. and began renovating. Three years later, “The Man Who Came to Dinner” was performed in the 34 39601

new building. Today, the theater is affectionately known as “BLT” to locals. They perform three shows throughout the year, along with two summer camps — one for teens and one for kids, both ending in full productions. The Haven is also used as a concert site for local musicians and often works with the Mississippi School of the Arts. BLT has a rich history and has come far from borrowing venue spaces for per-

formances from places like Brookhaven Elementary School, Copiah-Lincoln Community College and the Mississippi School of the Arts. For more than 40 years, the goal of BLT has been to expose young people to the arts and give people of all ages the opportunity to be a part of live theater and express themselves creatively. The first production of 2021 was BLTeens’ “High School Musical.”

ARTS TAKE CENTER STAGE AT MSA

Whether it is vocal, dance or any other discipline of study offered, Mississippi School of the Arts excels in student accommodation and experience. The school takes applications annually from students in their 10th grade year and teaches students in their 11th- and 12th-grade years. The disciplines that students may choose are vocal music, visual arts, theatre, dance, literary arts and media arts, the newest discipline added in the 20162017 school year. In the future, the school hopes to include an instrumental music discipline to its list of programs. MSA teachers expose the students to high-quality artwork of all types, and traditional teaching styles are mixed with a few non-traditional elements to get students out of their comfort zones. A strict regimen of classes and total immersion in their subject of interest help seal their unique experience at the end of the school year. 54 39601

As for what type of student is accepted into the school, MSA Executive Director Suzanne Hirsch said, “We really look for kids who are inspired, dedicated, independent and, above all, open-minded.” Hirsch said students at MSA have an artistic voice that needs to be heard but they are encouraged to always respect others and their voices, too. Over the years, MSA students have won multiple awards and honors, including national, regional and state awards as well as National Scholastic Art awards. The arts school also serves the community by exposing people of all ages to different types of artwork. With 10 to 20 events per year, families and individuals alike no longer have to drive an hour to experience the arts. “As a native of Mississippi, I feel honored to work for a school like MSA,” Hirsch said. “It has made a positive contribution to our kids and community.”
