Community, cancer awareness, exercise and C.A.R.E.ing mbsellz@gmail.com
What is better than getting some easy exercise, while also serving the Oxford community at the same time? The Cancer Awareness Research and Eradication Walk, also known as the C.A.R.E. Walk, is an annual fundraiser backed by the Panhellenic council. The event is one of the many ways that the Greek organizations on campus are attempting to help out their community. The walk also serves as a meet and greet for active members of NPC (National Panhellenic Conference) sororities and potential new members alike. Instead of something purely social, this event allows for a good mixture of service and sororitybased activities. It is a helpful way to promote research while
having fun at the same time. “C.A.R.E. Walk is a great way for the women of the Greek community, as well as the Oxford community, to come together to raise money for research into a disease that affects so many women worldwide,” said Molly Harris, senior Public Policy major and sorority member. All proceeds go to the Baptist Memorial Hospital Centers, and participants receive a C.A.R.E. Walk t-shirt, as well as refreshments following the walk. This year will be the ninth C.A.R.E. Walk, and all participants hope for it to be a big success. Registration is open the day of, so anyone running a little behind in the process has no need to worry. “The C.A.R.E. Walk is a wonderful way for all the members See C.A.R.E., PAGE 5

of our campus to come together for a great cause. It is an exciting time for potential new members of Greek life to meet with current members in a way that benefits cancer research and awareness. I have loved getting to support this cause, and I think that it’s a great way to start off the recruitment process,” said Emily Lovejoy, a current sorority president. Everyone involved with this year’s walk seems hopeful that this will be the most successful year yet. Both men and women can walk the event. If you have not been touched by cancer yourself, you can opt for walking for someone, be it a family member or friend. Many walkers put on a tag with the name of someone they know who has dealt with cancer. Bring out your pets for some fun and easy exercise, too! Both young and old alike are invited to participate this Thursday, September 13 at five p.m. The meeting grounds will be outside of the Student Union Plaza. “The walk reminds NPC sorority women and potential new members about what Greek life is really about giving back to others and enriching the lives of those who need us. I can’t wait for this year’s walk!” Lovejoy added.
