KASUMBALESA UNDER WATCH

ZAMBIAN security officers have intensified patrols at Kasumbalesa border to stop the Congolese from entering Zambia illegally especially with the outbreak of Covid-19

Chililabombwe Town Clerk, Cosmas Chalusa, said security at the nearby Kasumbalesa border post had been tightened after confusion that erupted at the weekend when the Congolese forced their into the country while throwing stones at security personnel.

Mr Chalusa said the situation at the border was now calm and security personnel were keeping vigil to ensure there was no more confusion. "I can safely state that security has been reinforced at the border because the provincial administration sent us more police officers to keep vigil. "This move is aimed at maintaining security and ensuring that people do not by-pass the health workers who are screening people for Covid-19,'' Mr Chalusa said

Mr Chalusa said the local authority was doing everything possible to ensure that all the Congolese were screened.

He said Chililabombwe district was developing a single walkway route which would only be used by the Congolese when entering the country. "The development of a single walkway will make it easy for the health workers to screen the Congolese. The council has also embarked on cleaning the border for the next two weeks to ensure cleanliness and sanity,'' he said

Mr Chalusa said the areas have been segmented into zones to make it easier for the council to conduct the cleaning exercise.

And Mufulira District Commissioner Mike Manda said he would request for authority to start quarantining foreingers entering the country from DRC through Mokambo border post.

Mr Manda said the district was concerned that some truck drivers who had not been tested for Covid-19 were entering the country. "It may not be truck drivers only, even other ordinary people, who are entering Zambia with no documents that they have been tested, they should be quarantined,'' Mr Manda said

Mpongwe intensifies patrols

GOVERNMENT has intensified patrols to effectively enforce compliance levels in Mpongwe, says District Commissioner Keith Maila.

Mr Maila noted that the area had faced challenged in terms of compliance with bar owners who were selling beer to patrons while locked inside the premises.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Mwila said the multi-sectoral team which includes police officers had intensified patrols to ensure that compliance levels were satisfactory.

He also said the district was facing challenges in terms of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for front line staff.

Mr Maila said business houses had not contributed towards the fight against Covid-19, except for Agrivision Zambia which donated some disinfectants. "I want to appeal to the business community in the district to come on board and work with district administration to fight this pandemic," he said.

He said the district has big investors like Zambeef, Zamhatch, Novatek, Agrivision Zambia, Joko Commodities, Zataka Farms and many more whose aid was needed.

Mr Maila stated that the fight against Covid-19 was not for the government alone, but needed to everyone to put their heads together.

He said a lot of trucks were entering the district from outside the country, hence the need for the business community to aid Government.

14-year-old girl defiled

A 28-YEAR-OLD man of Kyawama compound in Solwezi has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.

The incident happened on Sunday around 16:00 hours.

North-Western Province Commissioner of police, Elias Chushi, confirmed the indient and identified the suspect as Daniel Mulenga.

He said Mulenga allegedly enticed the girl to his house where he had sex with her. "However, the victim's parents got wind of the information and made a follow up and caught the two, pants down having sex," he explained.

He said the suspect is in police custody and will soon appear in court soon.

Sinazongwe residents get Covid-19 counsel

A NON Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Sinazongwe has advised residents to take Covid-19 preventive measures seriously.

Rescue Home Foundation (RHF) executive director, Munkombwe Sinywimanzi, who is professionally a nurse, said everyone was at risk regardless of age and status in society. Ms Sinywimanzi said it was important for residents to take seriously all the preventive measures and guidelines.

She was speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation in Maamba.

Ms Sinywimanzi expressed concerned that people in Sinazongwe were not adhering to wearing of masks in public places, social distancing and staying home as guided. She said

that her organisation was sensitising members of the public both in rural areas and peri urban of the district. "As an Organisation, our vision is to put the vulnerable in better places. In terms of Covid-19, everyone is vulnerable to this disease hence we are sensitizing people and we are also donating handwashing buckets, sanitizers and other essential to the people. "So far we happy with the response we are getting from members of the public. At least the information is reaching the people," Ms Sinywimanzi said.

Meanwhile, Sinazongwe Member of Parliament Gift Sialubalo has distributed about 5, 000 face masks in all the wards of the district through the civic leaders.

Mr Sialubalo told the Daily Nation that he was targeting to distribute more than 10, 000 masks and appealed to well-wishers to extend their helping hands as the number of Covid-19 were going up.

Don’t detain suspects unnecessarily, police advised

IN view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the police command in Sinazongwe has been requested to reduce on unnecessary detentions of suspect to prevent the spread of dis

ease. Sinazongwe Member of Parliament, Gift Sialubalo, advised that police at Maamba and Sinazeze should find other ways of dealing with suspects rather than overcrowding them in cells.

Mr Sialubalo was reacting to complaints by residents that the high number of people being detained in cells at Sinazeze police post and Maamba police station was worrying.

He said it was important for the police to avoid detaining suspects facing petty crime charges.

On Tuesday, Maamba police station had 29 suspects in police cells against the expected number of 15 holding capacity. This came to light when the Ward Development Committee visited the police station to check on the construction of new police cells at Maamba Police Station.

The structure was initiated by the MP and was being financed through the Constituency Development Fund.
