Something Old, Something New This Year More Parking, Promotions And History Slated For 2015 Fair By KELLY CLARK Daily News-Record

HARRISONBURG — More parking spaces, an expanded military discount and a 200year-old piece of national history are new attractions coming to the 2015 Rockingham County Fair. General Manager Jeff Ishee said each of the fair’s six days will be Military Appreciation Day. All veteran, active duty and retired members of the U.S. armed forces, including the Reserves and National Guard, get in free with a valid ID card or proof of service. Ishee said the discount applies only to a service member and not his or her family members or spouses. The promotion lasted only one day during the 2014 fair. Ishee said the idea of expanding it received “a spontaneous burst of applause” from the hundreds of Rockingham County Fair Association volunteers who heard about it. “We discussed it and approved it this spring,” he said. “We want to honor those people who have served our country.” In addition to an expanded military discount, the fair’s parking area also is growing by 9 acres. The fair association is renting a parcel of land from nearby farmers to give more parking space to fairgoers. Called the “Keep it Green” parking lot, 6 acres sit adjacent to the main entrance, while the remaining land has been cleared and graded near Gate 4, according to the fair’s website. The land normally is used for producing hay for livestock feed and is being rented on

a multiyear basis. “We have great neighbors,” Ishee said of the agreement. Including 7 acres acquired last year, the fair has now added 16 acres of parking space over the last two years. Once fairgoers find places to park their modern vehicles, they’ll be able to view an historic mode of transportation in the fairgrounds’ Farm Heritage Museum. A Conestoga wagon dated to 1803 will be on display in the museum throughout the fair. Ishee said “a group of local antique enthusiasts who wish to remain anonymous” donated two of the wagons, which were most famously used by American pioneers immigrating westward in the 18th and 19th centuries. “They’re the real McCoy,” he said. Conestogas also played a role in settling Nikki Fox / DN-R the Shenandoah Valley. “The road [the fairgrounds] is on is the People crowd the Midway, which includes games and rides, during the 2014 fair. Old Valley Pike,” Ishee said. “It was one of the wilderness roads.” Ishee praised the group who provided the wagons and said he hopes to display both of them permanently in the museum after the fair. “They weren’t cheap,” he said. “It was a thoughtful donation.” Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children age 7 through 12 and free for children age 6 and younger. From noon to 5 p.m on opening day, Monday, Aug. 17, admission is $1. For more information about the fair and a complete schedule of events, call 434-0005 or visit www.rockinghamcountyfair.com.
