ou might be fretting already about what to get that jet-set friend or family member who always seems to be abroad. Gifts for those with the wanderlust bug can be tricky. An all-inclusive vacation package will cost you thousands of dollars, but there are other ways you can help out your fellow traveler with simple gifts that are inexpensive and will save them the hassle. Charles Turner of Turner Travel, a Harrisonburg-based travel agency, said when picking out a gift, be sure you are aware of the person’s interests and desires. “It’s a real mistake to pick something off the wall,” Turner said. For a gift under $50 or $25, try thinking about what the person will need when they
are overseas. What kind of clothes will they need to wear, depending on where in the world they’re going? Think coats, light jackets, umbrellas, sturdy shoes. Shannon Culverwell, a senior at James Madison University, has traveled extensively, both with her family and with the university’s study abroad program. Culverwell has been to Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Canada and the Bahamas. She studied abroad during the summer of 2015 through the political science department in Bosnia, Austria and Croatia. “I just really enjoyed traveling and wanted to have that experience of the summer,” Culverwell said. “I wanted to learn more about other cultures.”
Culverwell recommends buying someone a good pair of boots or walking shoes. “You do so much walking, you don’t want to go out there with Forever 21 shoes,” she said. Culverwell said she wishes she would have bought a special spray for shoes. “There’s a cool spray that changes your regular shoes and makes them waterproof,” she said. Culverwell used a journal on her trips to record her experiences. It’s a thoughtful gift that someone who is busy making arrangements may easily forget. Culverwell also recommends a quality water bottle as a gift. “I think one thing that’s always good is a good water bottle, like a Brita or Camelback,”

she said. “The filter is good for places where the water may not be as good.” Even if your traveling loved one has an electrical adapter, it’s always good to be prepared with extra. Culverwell said hers broke while she was abroad. Travel adapters can be as cheap as $20. Turner also recommends a rain coat, umbrella or a carry on bag for the flight, but be sure it follows airline requirements. Many travelers like to research their destination before they touch ground. Consider buying movies or books about the culture, Culverwell said. “For more fun things, relevant movies to whatever countries they’re going to, and books to be prepared,” she said, “so you kind of have an understanding of the culture.” If you’re willing to spend a little more money (like a couple hundred dollars or more), a DSLR camera or a GoPro camera will ensure the traveler can document their trip. And photo frames and photo albums will help them keep their lasting memories. Kristina Overholt said the most valu-
HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE able gadget during her travels has been a portable luggage scale, which ensured her luggage met the 50 pound requirement before she arrived at the airport. Overholt, a sophomore at JMU, studied abroad this summer in Scotland. “There was like 25 of us on this trip and probably every single person asked to borrow that luggage scale because when you’re there for two months you buy all this stuff,” Overholt said. Overholt also traveled to Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic for a week in high school. Luggage scales can be purchased for less than $20. Overholt said her mother bought her a book on Scotland that was helpful in planning her trip, and even helped her find more off-the-beaten path sites she wouldn’t have known otherwise. The different sized zipper mesh bags her mom
also bought her for Christmas also turned out to be a lifesaver. “I really like to be organized so that was really nice,” she said. “[It] was way more helpful than I thought.” Another handy item Overholt brought along on her trip was an RFID protector for her passport and credit cards. Available as a sleeve or wallet, the RFID protector prevents individuals from skimming, a type of digital identity theft. “It seems tedious, but those things really happen abroad, technology is crazy,” she said. “That made me feel a lot safer. … Someone couldn’t just come e eativ r C and scan it. They o Metr have devices where you can just stand beside someone who can scan your passport.” RFID blockers can cost as low as $20 or $25. If you’re looking to splurge this Christ-

mas, Turner Travels offers an array of all-inclusive vacation packages and cruises all over the world. It could be the perfect gift for a niece who just graduated college, or parents who are retiring. That is, if you’re willing to spend about $3,000 or more. “The most frequent sale we make is a cruise,” Turner said. “It’s a very good value.” Most cruises sail from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., or from Seattle headed toward Alaska. Mexican and Caribbean packages are favorites, as well as Disney trips for families. “[We] have everything from one night in a motel in Richmond for $79 or a week’s river cruise in Europe that’s $9,000,” he said. Turner warned before dropping money on a vacation for someone else to make sure the destination is going to give them what they want in the trip. If you’re unsure about what they’d like, Turner Travel offers gift certificates in any amount. Contact Shelby Mertens at 574-6274, @DNR_smertens or smertens@dnronline.com

Gifts For A TV Fanatic reative
MetroC
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The TV lovers in your life deserve holiday gifts that recognize their passion. There’s lots of ways to achieve that, with creative goods that lets fans flaunt their series allegiances or products new and old that adds to the ease and pleasure of TV viewing. Another solid choice: TV-related books that provide good reason to make time for reading even in the “platinum age” of superb television, as one of the authors has labeled it. Here’s a list of some appealing picks to consider, with prices as found online. We’re leaving the bargain hunting and naughty or nice decision-making up to you.
The Goods ■ Cyberthriller “Mr. Robot” has spawned fun merchandise, official and otherwise. For true devotees, consider a black-and-goldtoned bar necklace inscribed “Mrs. Robot” (under $8) or a print of an original drawing merging the faces of stars Rami Malek and Christian Slater for $19.20 (both at etsy.com/ market/mr_robot). ■ Practical gifts aren’t at odds with the lavishly romantic “Outlander,” if they’re arm warmers ($19.95) inspired by the leading lady’s or a plaid lambswool scarf ($54.95). On the obsessive side, fans of Caitriona Balfe’s Claire and Sam Heughan’s Jamie might covet their roughly 8-inch-high photo depictions ready for desktop display ($12.95 each). All available at outlanderstore.com. ■ “I am doubtful of all you people” is among the catchphrases from ABC’s sitcom “black-ish” imprinted on T-shirts, mugs, totes and more. Besides that quote from whiz kid Diane, there’s Dre’s buoyant, “When I say cup, you say cake” featured on similarly varied stuff (http://www.cafepress.com/+blackishtv+gifts, prices vary).
The Books ■ For the discerning viewer, “The Platinum Age of Television” ($32.50, Doubleday) by veteran critic David Bianculli will score a bullseye. He lays out his theory of how TV evolved to its current rarified form in engagingly written, well-organized detail. There are sections devoted to genres including animation, Westerns and medical shows (for that, the dots are connected starting at “Dr. Kildare” and ending with “Grey’s Anatomy”). Other chapters profile such vaunted figures as Carol Burnett, Mel Brooks and Norman Lear. ■ “Mars: Our Future on the Red Planet” ($30, National Geographic) is a companion book to National Geographic Channel’s

Harrisonburg, Va.
hybrid docu-drama series “Mars” about an imagined colonization of the planet. Journalist Leonard David’s book explores the science behind such a mission and the challenges that await the first settlers. There’s a generous selection of photographs taken on Mars and in space, along with maps and commentary from planetary scientists. ■ “Mad Men” is gone but far from forgotten by admirers, who likely would treasure this two-volume, 1,048-page set detailing the drama’s creation and artistry ($200, Taschen). Volume one uses stills and script excerpts to chronicle its seven seasons. The second volume includes interviews with series creator Matthew Weiner, star Jon Hamm, the show’s writers, costume designer Janie Bryant and others, along with set photos and what’s intriguingly described as “production ephemera.”
The Comfort Zone ■ Multiple remotes are a TV watcher’s bane. Help control the controls with universal versions, such as the Logitech Harmony Compan-
ion (around $150), which can handle nearly all electronics in all rooms of a home, including TVs, gaming consoles and streaming systems. For a major splurge, consider the new Savant Remote + Host, with a cool design and touch screen, at $500. The RCA Universal Remote (about $9) is a thrifty choice. ■ Introduce your favorite Luddites to a good streaming device and their lives will never be the same, with access to services including Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. The Chromecast (about $35) gets the job done and so does the Amazon Fire TV Stick ($40), which has added Alexa Voice Remote. The Roku Streaming Stick (about $50) is handy for travelers. ■ Until everything is voice- or robot-operated, we have to rely on our hands to navigate channels and snack. Enter low-tech solutions to the problem: the Slanket (theslanket.com), Snuggie (mysnuggiestore.com ) or other versions of a blanket with sleeves (priced at about $15 and up). It may provoke snickers when unwrapped but could be a sleeper hit. No user guide required; recliner not included.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Everyone has that one friend with impeccable taste in music. Or the brother that always has his hands wrapped around a guitar. Or the daughter who is more excited about her new school instrument than the latest episode of “America’s Next Top Model.” No matter the focus of their musical obsession, purchasing gifts for your music lover can be hard. But Valley businesses have some suggestions that will make any music lover — young or old — happy this holiday season. While instrument related knick-knacks and ornaments are always popular, most shop owners see customers asking for items to upgrade their music collection. For those into records, Elliott Downs, owner of Wonder Records in Harrisonburg, offers a large selection ranging from oldies to current artists. Need a place to play your collection? Wonder Records has that too. Because everything in stock is used and restored, Downs can offer original 1970s record players at a much reduced price. “Generally ’70s record players, especially one that’s been restored, will be a third the price of a new record player, and the quality is a little less on the new ones,” Downs said. “The older players usually have better components than newer ones.” Wonder Records can also order new needles for existing turntables. Less expensive equipment to support amps and mixing boards are popular as well. Downs sees an uptick in the sales of effects pedals for guitars and Hometown Music owner Chuck Marks sells more patch cables and microphones. “The sound systems we sell focus on small self-contained speaker, mixer and amp systems starting at $130,” he said. “We sell a lot of those because of how useful they are for a low price.” For those with wind instruments such as flutes, trumpets, trombones and clarinets, the gift of a clean instrument could be the right choice. Oprah Unveils Her Favorite Things By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Thanksgiving? Meh. Who needs turkey when one can advance directly to Oprah’s Favorite Things for the gift-giving holidays. Yes, it’s that time of year, when “O, The Oprah Magazine” unveils the queen’s curated gift suggestions, to be included with discounts in the December issue. For 2016, there are exactly 101, a majority available on Amazon for the second year. Oprah elves Gayle King, the magazine’s editor-at-large, and Adam Glassman, the creative director, presented highlights of the haul Tuesday after schlepping to food and trade shows in search of products for the boss lady to consider in June, when their Christmas begins. “It was summer and the air conditioner broke so she was sitting there sweating like a brahma bull, but you know she’s always very pleasant,” King told The Associated Press in an interview with Glassman, of Oprah’s hands-on process this year. “And she was wearing this cute little one-piece onesie,” Glassman said, “and I kept saying, ‘Don’t you want a T-shirt?’ and she kept saying, ‘No, I want my onesie!’” “With the tennis shoes and the vest,” King chimed in. The outfit they spoke of has Oprah looking Christmas fly in red stripes, Santa cap and bright red high-tops on the December cover, to hit newsstands soon. The list includes a range of price points for a range of gift recipients. Some highlights with suggested retail pricing:
Edibles ■ Oprah’s Poinsettia Flower Pot Cake (1): On the outside, it looks like the actual holiday plant. On the inside is chocolate cake goodness with vanilla mousse. Very sweet. From MadeinHeavenCakes.com. $165. ■ “Food, Health and Happiness,” by Oprah herself: Part memoir, part cookbook, a little bit of self-help. Weight Watchers points are included. It’s for fans willing to wait until the book comes out in January. Meantime, it can be pre-ordered. $35.

Barbecue and southern foods expert Elizabeth Karmel rounded up her favorite products of the year and suggests these gifts for those who cook — and those who just like to eat:

■ God’s Love We Deliver (1) is an organization that prepares and delivers meals to people who, because of serious illness, are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves. The organization’s first cookbook, “God’s Love We Deliver’s Cookbook: Nourishing Stories and Recipes from Notable Friends” is a star-studded compilation of favorite home recipes and the stories that tell them from culinary icons as well as fashion, music and theatre greats. Contributors include Mario Batali and Alice Waters, as well Stanley Tucci, Meryl Streep, Roseanne Cash and Donna Karan. All proceeds benefit the organization. $50, glwd.org/store/item. jsp?prodName=cookbook. ■ Williams-Sonoma has teamed up with Share our Strength and celebrity food folks including Ina Garten, Chrissy Teigen and Trisha Yearwood to create artwork for the No Kid Hungry Kitchen Spatula (2). Proceeds from the silicone spatulas benefit No Kid Hungry in its campaign to end childhood hunger in the U.S. Available in stores and online, 30 percent of the proceeds go to charity. $12.95.

Stocking Stuffers ■ Sukeno Donut Socks (3) are the perfect (calorie-free) gift for the doughnut lover in your life. Designed to fit both men and women, they come folded up and packaged like a single doughnut, and are available in six different “flavors” such as Oreo Ring, Rainbow Sprinkles and Berry Sprinkles. $15.50, otakumode.com/shop/
label/SUKENO. ■ I use Revolo porcelain crumpled cups every single morning for coffee, and I love that they now have cups with a Christmas theme. The cups are perfect for coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate or tea. I’ve also been known to use the porcelain cups for cocktails as well. The crumpled cup feels good in your hand because of the indentation that the crumpled part at the top makes in the round cup. A set of two cups is available exclusively on their website. You can choose between a set of one red and one Moose design, or two other holiday motifs, Gingerbread and Santa. $39.99 for two, revol1768.com.
For Cooks ■ The Wustfhof classic 8-inch Uber Cook’s Knife (4) can be used to chop, slice, dice and mince everything. This essential, multi-purpose knife is a workhorse in the kitchen. The knife takes the traditional features of an 8-inch chef ’s knife and adds a bigger “belly” to create a smoother motion for all chopping, mincing and dicing tasks. I like to think of the knife as a mash-up of the popular Santoku knife and a classic chef ’s knife. $139.99, wustoff.com. ■ I had heard that the Breville Toaster oven (5) was so good that it could rival my wall oven, but I didn’t believe it until I tested the new Smart Oven Pro. I made a roast, a chicken, banana bread, and cookies as well as toast and they all came out as good if not better than in my oven. It also re-heated pizza to perfection. If you don’t have the counter space for the PRO, get the Smart Oven mini which puts other small models to shame. $269.99, brevilleusa.com/the-smart-oven-pro.html.

anything more appropriate or delicious to serve with a warm apple crisp, apple cake or a nice wedge of cheddar cheese? Eleanor and Albert Leger, founders of Eden Ice Cider, produce a rich full-bodied ice cider from their apple orchards where they grow both sweet and sour heirloom varietals. A 375 ml bottle is made from more than eight pounds of apples. They offer eight ice cider options including honeycrisp, as well as a smaller 187 ml limited release Brandy Barrel Heirloom Blend Ice Cider. $25.00 for a 375 ml bottle, edenicecider.com ■ I met Brenda “Blondie” Coffman at last year’s South Beach Wine & Food Festival. One bite of her buttercream-iced cookies and her s’mores bars transported me to cookie nirvana. I gave my sweet-toothed father a gift of the Blondie’s Cookies cookie-of-themonth club (6) and it quickly became his favorite gift. The beauty of this gift is that you choose how many months — from one to 12 — and the cookies are different each month so you never get tired of the assortment. Each from-scratch cookie is individually wrapped and can be frozen.
$29.99 per box, blondiescookies. com
Kitchen Essentials ■ The Cuisinart egg cooker (7) changed my egg-eating life. Sure I can boil a soft-boiled egg but sometimes it’s more cooked than I like it, especially if I get busy doing something else while I’m boiling the eggs. But this Egg Central uses steam to cook the eggs which also makes them easy to peel as the steam prevents the shell from sticking to the white — just make sure to load them with the smaller point of the egg facing down. All I have to do is crack it under cold running water and the shell literally slips off. The Egg Central also comes with attachments for poached eggs and omelets. $39, cuisinart. com ■ The brainchild of John Pittner who owns a kitchen shop in Mount Pleasant, S.C., this acacia-wood cutting board is made with a slight concave center that holds exactly one cup of liquid. It also has heavy-duty silicone treads on each corner so that the board won’t slip on your counter — especially helpful when carving. $49.99, concavecuttingboard.com.
