5 ways to improve your game

your foot prematurely; otherwise, you can lose power and distance.
1. Choose the right clubs
As with any hobby, identifying those areas that need the most work can help you become a better golfer. Keep track of each shot you take, and then look at the results to see which areas of your game need the most work.
armer weather sends scores of golfers to their favorite courses each and every day. Golf is a challenging pastime, but a few pointers can help golfers hone their short games, long games and everything in between. There is more to selecting clubs than pulling any old iron out of your golf bag and whacking away. Wind, hazards and obstructions in landing areas should influence your decision of which club to use. Novice golfers may want to rely on their caddies to make club recommendations, and as they become more confident in their abilities they can start to make their own choices. 2. Anchor your feet Anchor your foot behind the ball to drive the ball further. Right-handed players will keep the right foot anchored, and lefties will do the opposite. Do not lift
3. Identify your weaknesses
4. Fix your alignment Align your shots by assessing the target from behind the ball. Then set the clubface behind the golf ball and align it with the target before you enter your stance. 5. Use your torso for power The torso is essential to a solid swing. Practice rotating from your core to control your backswing and then maintain the same spine angle and posture on the downswing.

What golf cart is right for you?
Content provided by Valley Golf & Outdoor
W
hen deciding on what golf cart to buy, the first question many folks ask is whether they should purchase a gas-powered or electric golf cart? Both are excellent options and it will mainly depend on how you intend to use your golf cart. Electric golf carts don’t require fuel and run quietly. They are an excellent option for eco-friendly folks and for those that ride to-and-from home, as they need to be plugged in each day to recharge. Electric golf carts are not a good option for folks who like to get off the grid, as it will just take a day or two on a camping trip for the battery to die with no access to electricity. Gas-powered carts require unleaded gasoline to run. They have more horsepower, can run more accessories such as radios and air conditioners, and, as long as there is a gas station nearby, you never have to worry
about getting stranded. Gas-powered carts are a great choice for folks who go out for longer rides, who go camping, or who want to attach a mini-grill to the tailgate. Buying a new golf cart is always the safest bet, as the manufacturer can assure you of the cart’s quality and provide a warranty in case it doesn’t run well. Buying new also provides you the most options for customizing your cart. Buying used is a great option to save money, but it is a little riskier. When buying used, it is best to buy a refurbished golf cart, so the dealership can assure you of the cart’s quality and can provide a limited warranty on the vehicle. Buying “as is is the riskiest. It is best to ask an expert to inspect the cart before purchasing, though understand that this type of purchase will not come with a warranty.

Tips for newcomers

F
ew hobbies can be as enjoyable one moment and as frustrating the next as golf. Golfers know a great putt can be quickly followed by a bad tee shot, and maintaining their composure through the highs and lows of the game is a key to success on the links. Maintaining that composure isn’t always easy, even for the professionals. It’s even more difficult for beginners, who quickly learn the game of golf involves more than just spending sunny weekend afternoons on pristine golf courses. In fact, golf can be quite demanding, and beginners would be wise to heed a few tips before hitting the course.
¡ Don’t commit to an expensive set of clubs right off the bat Golf clubs can be very expensive, so beginners should buy an affordable secondhand set of clubs so they can get the hang of what they like before spending a
lot of money. Visit a pro shop and explain that you are just a beginner. The shop will likely make some valuable suggestions and might even let you try out a pair of clubs. In addition, many driving ranges allow customers to rent clubs, and this can be a great and inexpensive way to find the right clubs for you.
¡ Take lessons Even the very best at self-teaching might find it extremely difficult to become a self-taught golfer. When first trying your hand at golf, take some lessons and don’t expect to be playing 18 holes any time soon. Before hitting the course, where you might be discouraged and you might frustrate those golfing behind you, learn the fundamentals by taking a few lessons at the driving range. Learn from a professional, who won’t offer you any hidden secrets to golfing glory (there aren’t any) but will offer sound advice on the

GOLF GUIDE | 2017 game’s fundamentals.
¡ Take the game home with you Beginners can even take advantage of golf’s vast popularity by taking the game home with them. This doesn’t mean building a putting green in your backyard. Rather, purchase some instructional DVDs to learn the game during your down time throughout the week. Many golfers don’t have time to hit the links during the week, but they do have time to watch some DVDs when they get home from work. Such instructional DVDs can help you master your grip and stance, which you can then take with you to the course over the weekend.
¡ Have fun Golf is a fun game; it just takes time to hone your skills. But even if you aren’t ready for the professional tour after your first few rounds, you can still have fun. Don’t let some beginner’s frustration, which every golfer experiences, ruin the fun of the game. Take note of your surroundings when you hit the links, and appreciate the time you’re spending with your group. If the game becomes more a source of frustration than fun, then take a break and put in some more work away from the course, be it at the driving range or studying at home.

Othello golfers have it rolling
G
By Rodney Harwood of the Columbia Basin Herald (Moses Lake, Wash.)
olf has a way of driving me crazy. True, it’s a short drive, but it’s crazy nonetheless.
I played Bandon Dunes a few years ago. Bandon is the closest thing to Scottish links golf you’ll find on American soil and was designed by Scotsman David McLay Kidd, who also designed Gamble Sands in Brewster. Golf Odyssey, the premiere newsletter focusing on golf travel, named Bandon Dunes, “The Best Place on the Planet for Golf.” Having walked the hallowed ground on the Old Course in St. Andrews and played the New Course (built in 1895), I’m thinking it would be nice to add the American answer to links golf to my resume of places I’ve slapped a golf ball round. The only thing I can say about Bandon Dunes is to make sure you have something to eat first, because it will eat your lunch. They have since removed some of the gorse, but I walked off, like a novice skier on an expert slope, thinking I had no business being there. I play to a 15-handicap, but Bandon exposed every weakness in my bag, which started with driver and ended with putter. Of course the next week they hosted the U.S. MidAmerican Golf Championships and the real golfers came in and lit it up to the tune of 68, shooting not only under-par, but holes in every complaint I might have had. Golf has a way of speaking for itself. The guys down in Othello have it rolling pretty

good, having posted a program-low score of 340 at the CWAC League match at Black Rock Creek Golf Course in Grandview last time out. Ben Garza played at the 2A state championship last season. He’s getting his game in shape and has a little company this season with freshman Patrick Azevedo adding his game to the cause. Azevedo turned in a 4-over-par 76 at Black Rock Creek Golf Course to lead the Huskies. Garza double-bogeyed the last two holes to finish with an 82. If things went a little differently, that school record could have been even lower. “We did awesome, that’s a team low and a team record for us,” Othello coach Brian Lumsden said. “We had some new faces in our lineup, which is part of our depth.” The key to team golf is at the No. 4 slot and more than one golf coach has said, “My kingdom for a fourth guy.” From a team perspective, a lot is riding on Isaiah Garza and Sam Azevedo. They came through nicely with 85 and 97, respectively, at Black Rock Creek. They don’t necessarily have to shoot even par, but if they can beat other teams’ No. 3 and No. 4, it will go a long way toward moving up on the leaderboard. The Othello guys are up next, ironically enough, at McLay Kidd’s Washington state links creation Gamble Sands.

How to help kids get into golf
MetroCreative
G
olf is a game of skill that can take years, if not decades, to master. Many golfers find their time on the golf course both rewarding and relaxing, even on those days when the fairways seem impossible to find. Though many players never swing a golf club until they reach adulthood, it’s never too early to hit the links. Some of the world’s most accomplished golfers, including four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, began playing as toddlers, and many feel that getting an early start can lead to a more successful game down the road. Getting kids into golf is a great way for parents to bond with their children while enjoying the great outdoors. Golf can also be used to teach kids humility, sportsmanship and the importance of hard work. Thanks to the often frustrating nature of golf, parents may find it somewhat challenging to instill a love of the game in their youngsters. But there are ways to introduce kids to

this wonderful game that kids might just play for the rest of their lives. ¡ Focus on having fun Few, if any, golfers at your local golf course on a given weekend could say with certainty that golf has never frustrated them. The challenge of golf may be its most appealing characteristic to older players, but young kids can be easily overwhelmed by the challenges golf presents. By focusing on having fun instead of perfecting techniques, parents can get kids to look forward to their time on the links. The more fun kids have, the more likely they will be to embrace the game and its many challenges. Don’t put pressure on youngsters as they develop their games, but encourage them through their struggles and reassure them that you faced the same obstacles when you started playing. ¡ Hire an instructor with experience teaching children

¡ Purchase the correct equipment Even the best golfers are bound to struggle when using the wrong equipment. While it might be unwise to invest in especially expensive equipment for youngsters likely to grow out of it in a few months’ time, deals can be found on used kids’ equipment. Used kids’ equipment is typically subjected to less wear and tear than used equipment for adults, as kids tend to play less often and fewer holes than adults when they do play. But make sure to find correctly sized equipment that kids feel comfortable using. ¡ Play some holes Instructors may teach kids the differences between the types of clubs and how to swing and putt. Golfers rejoice! Those dreaded slices or hooks could become a thing of the distant past thanks to adjustable clubs and drivers. In addition to helping improve accuracy, adjustable clubs also lighten the load in your golf bag. With a few twists of a wrench or even turning the shaft of the driver itself, golfers can adjust the face angle, loft and lie angle of the driver to hit the ball farther and straighter. Golfers can make small adjustments to create the right loft and improve distance without having to purchase a new club or visit a club fitter. Many club manufacturers now offer adjustable drivers and other clubs. According to an informal poll on Golf. com, 34 percent of the 2,337 respondents owned an adjustable driver by the end of 2011. The ability to upgrade shafts has also become popular as golfers

Best Value in the Valley!
According to data from golf club manufacturer TaylorMade, 70 percent of consumers who use the company’s adjustable drivers adjust their club at least once to get the desired shot. Afterward, 10 to 15 percent of adjustable driver users report further adjustments as they become comfortable with the features. Although golfers can now put adjustments into their own hands, it is still adviseable to get a professional fitting regardless of your clubs. A certified club fitter can help a person sort through the options available and make recommendations based on various factors. Those who are not fans of adjustable drivers say that the adjustment mechanisms add weight to the drivers, which can compromise efficiency. However, that isn’t stopping larger numbers of golf fans from taking adjustable drivers for a trial run in an effort to improve their game.

Adjustable golf clubs enable golfers to walk out onto the course with one driver and a few different shafts. With a couple of clicks from a wrench, a person can have an entirely new driver. That cuts down on the equipment that needs to be carried and can fine tune a golfer’s accuracy. These high-tech clubs are corresponding to changes being made to golf balls. Engineers have reduced the spin on golf balls to help the balls travel farther. To do so, golf experts advise that the ball needs to be hit higher into the air. Adjustable drivers can give players the edge they need to produce the right height and trajectory.

This sentiment is shared by the PGA of America president, Ted Bishop, who says, “I think anything we can do to relax the rules, if it means putting non-conforming equipment in the hands of players that enable them to hit the ball higher and farther and enjoy the game more -- what’s the problem?
Although this phrase is uttered jokingly by many golfers, recreational golfers who’ve reached their plateau have had very few other options, until now. “If recreational golfers insist on following the rules used by the PGA Tour, there’s little they can do to immediately improve their game, says John Hoeflich, executive director, of the United States Recreational Golf Association (USRGA). “However, if they play by USRGA rules, they do have the option to switch to better equipment.
According to the National Golf Foundation, golf rounds have fallen by 8 percent since 2007, largely due to the frustrations of the game, excessive play times and high costs.
The USRGA is the official organization that governs recreational golf. Its rules allow the use of higherperformance golf equipment. Hoeflich estimates that more than half of U.S. golfers agree with the USRGA rules that permit equipment that “puts fun back in the game, speeds up play and helps achieve better scores.

“He was a famous golfer,” said St. Charles, a student at Butler High School. “And he was on cans of Arizona Iced Tea. Other than that, I had no idea the kind of impact Mr. Palmer left on millions of people.” That changed, however, when Richmond County students were given the opportunity to partake in the annual Ted Greve & Associates art contest. Shortly after Palmer’s death in September, Greve - a lawyer with firms in Augusta and North Carolina - asked local pupils to pay tribute to the golfing legend. In all, about 70 applicants applied for the contest, with the winners announced Dec. 8. Sure, the contest required art skills. But it also encouraged teenagers to research Palmer’s life. “After the project, I really came to appreciate what
all Mr. Palmer did,” said St. Charles, who works at the Masters Tournament as a sandwich maker. “He was a pilot. He created the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He helped open hospitals (in Orlando). He was so much more than simply a golfer.” Portraits of Palmer were accepted, but the contest was designed for students to think outside the box. With this in mind, St. Charles began researching Palmer. “For three days, all I did was research,” St. Charles said. “And in almost every photo I saw of Mr. Palmer, he was looking up. to Arnold Palmer through art most of these students,” Greve said. “Our primary goal for this contest is to motivate the youth to follow their passion in the arts.” St. Charles placed second in the competition behind Stanny Zaw, a 16-year-old student at Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School. Zaw captured first for his tribute of Palmer striking a golf ball at Augusta National Golf Club toward a drawing of the world. Monique Porter, 16, also from Davidson, won third place. In addition, each of the 18 finalists had their work printed in a calendar titled, ‘A Tribute to the King of Golf.’ As for the original artwork, the pieces have been offered to Augusta National Golf Club. If Augusta National passes, the work will rotate between Greve’s law offices in Georgia and North Carolina.
