Landscape 101: your dream yard By Peggy Gary // TPC Marketing
M
ost homeowners have dreamt, at some point, of having that outdoor oasis in the comfort of their very own yard. A place to entertain, or just sit and daydream on a warm summer’s afternoon under a shade tree with a nice cool drink in their hand. But most of us don’t know where to start and believe we can only afford it if we do it ourselves. Some of us start that DIY project and never quite finish; others know from the start that we cannot accomplish what we would like to on our own and call in a landscaper or a landscape architect. The first thing to know is what a landscaper and a landscape architect do, how what they do differs and just when to call which one. Landscape architects typically work on much larger-scale landscaping such as parks, streetscapes, trails, plazas and campuses, according to information provided by Don Brigham. He is an adjunct member of the faculty at University of Idaho and has taught planting design. Brigham has been a professional landscape architect for more than 30 years. A landscaper typically works on smaller projects like personal yards and some business landscaping. An easy way to think about it is a landscape architect is the person who plans and maps out the best use of any given space and the landscaper is the one who follows that map to create the oasis. So, while the two do have crossover, it is important to note that not all landscapers are landscape architects but landscape architects can be landscapers. Ask questions and always get references. Most will have portfolios on websites that you can look at to see their work.
DIY Some DIYers will get started on a landscape project only to discover they are not up to the task, according to Stephen Holstad, owner of SYG Nursery and Landscaping Inc., in Pullman. But most people give up before they get to that point. And then there are those who call on Holstad from the start and are willing to just leave it to a professional. He said it is more common that people have
an idea for years before calling him and he will bid jobs that don’t come to fruition for a while. But not to worry, he said he keeps those bids for at least seven years, and it is not out of the realm for people to call him up to five years after he writes a bid and say they are ready to move forward. Brigham said the sooner you talk to a landscape architect about your project, the better. Their involvement will have a greater impact if they can be on the job from the beginning.
Home Improvement Projects? Building Supplies Inc.

“For a new residence, a
landscape architect should be involved with the siting of the structure to take advantage of views, climate and to minimize possible negative aspects,” Brigham said. He did say though that there is a wealth of information out there and if a person has the time to do the research a DIY landscape can be that oasis a person is looking for. The important thing to remember is that whether you are starting from bare ground or making over an established landscape, the professionals can guide you. Should you be looking to recreate an existing yard you will already have some established plants. A professional can tell you which of those plants are worth keeping and which to get rid of, as well as guide you in how to incorporate the elements you want in that alreadyestablished environment. So you have chosen your professional, whether it be a landscape architect or a landscaper, or to DIY the project and you are ready to create that oasis. Some things to be mindful of when planning your yard are water use, sun exposure, climate and types of features you would like to include.
Popular trends and landscape themes
Both Brigham and Holstad said there has been a move toward xeriscape, which includes design elements such as limited lawn, waterefficient plants, efficient irrigation, use of soil amendments and mulches. Something as simple as switching the type of grass you have in your yard can cut your water consumption in half, Brigham said. “Some of the most exciting landscape projects are those where you have quality trees that provide an aura to your landscape,”

Holstad said many people are choosing to put outdoor rooms and fire pits in their yards as a way to take up space, create different focal points, conserve on upkeep and add depth to the environment.
sees people make is putting in too much turf grass, creating unnecessary ongoing maintenance for themselves. The other thing he sees a lot of is people planting shrubbery too close together or to a house, not realizing how big they will get.
Holstad said most people want to incorporate many elements into their yards: A place to play, an area to relax, plants that offer differing aesthetics at different times so there is always some color and contrast.
Holstad said the biggest mistake he sees is just using whatever soil that is already in the yard. The best plan is to mix what you have with compost and the rootball soil to give the root someplace to go.
“People usually want to include some sort of edible, be it a fruit tree, berry bush or other edible plant that doesn’t have to be put into a traditional garden but can be spread throughout the yard,” Holstad said.
Advice from the professionals
Brigham even suggests people use synthetic turf instead of grass. He said there is a new generation of these synthetic products that fool most people. They don’t need water, fertilizer or mowing – and that means conservation and not polluting the air by running a lawn mower. Brigham said these synthetic turfs are more cost-effective and believes golf courses will be required to be synthetic in the future. The most important trend both professionals see and believe needs to continue is making your yard drought resistant. “Most trees that grow around here are drought-tolerant and as long as the tree has a bigger root system it can survive with less water,” Holstad said.
With water conservation not just being a good idea but more of a necessity, the two landscape professionals said sprinkler systems are the best way to go. Sprinklers should be the first thing you do when starting from scratch but are not out of the question when you are working with an established environment. This should be something you get a professional to do, especially if you are incorporating it into an established yard. It doesn’t have to be a landscaper or a landscape architect: There are many companies that specialize in just doing sprinklers and have a lot of knowledge on adding them to established yards. “A well-designed system is efficient in its distribution of just the right amount of water at the right time,” Brigham said. “You can even connect your sprinkler controller to weather monitoring and soil moisture detection
devices. “Such devices are good for preventing overwatering and watering during a rain storm,” Brigham added. Brigham also advises people to be adventurous and create a space different from the neighbors. Another thing people want to conserve is their own time. Being mindful of the types of plants you have in your yard can help a homeowner do that, Holstad said. “The first thing out of a lot of people’s mouths is ‘low maintenance,’ ” Holstad said. “Instead of spending hours pruning, you should spend very little time pruning.” Holstad advises people be conscientious of whether a plant is a shade plant or a sun plant, and just how much of both the plant will get in any location. One of the most important things about landscaping, Holstad said, is knowing your soil and what types of amendments it may need. In the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, the soil is more rocky and sandy, while on the Palouse it is more clay and topsoil in some places, Holstad said. Preparing your ground will help plant health, water conservation, and speed of growth, among other benefits. Adding 18 inches of good soil is the best depth to ensure success, Holstad said.
He said it doesn’t have to be a native plant as long as the location of the planting and the maintenance are right.

2. A touch of gold To immerse yourself in the sand and sun, use collections of gold-framed mirrors. Adding mirrors is a simple way to bounce additional light around the room, and the gold can add a warm hue, so they’re both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Even smaller items, such as jewelry stands, towel hooks and toilet paper holders, can show off your unique aesthetic and make your escape truly your own.
3. Greenery
Keep your bathroom sparklingly and stunningly clean - and smelling great. Don’t forget to clean frequently overlooked places like the back of the toilet, inside the shower and along the edges of fixtures.
5. Sparkling and clean
Bathrooms can have greenery in them, too. Plants such as philodendrons and bromeliads can add an element of airiness and life, and both can be found in super-realistic faux styles if your bathroom is not conducive to the real thing.
Scented cleaning products such as those from the Clorox Scentiva Pacific Breeze & Coconut line, including bathroom foamer, toilet cleaning gel, multi-surface spray and disinfecting wipes, not only deliver a refreshing clean, but can also help transport you to a relaxing paradise with aromas of coconut, pineapples and warm sandalwood.

5 tips for deck design Family Features
T
iming can be everything, especially when it comes to planning an outdoor living space. By getting a jump-start on planning, you can afford yourself time to complete the process with maximum creativity and minimal stress. Try these expert tips and tricks of the trade to help make your dream deck a reality.
Lay a solid foundation
choose the right materials for your project and design a customized outdoor living space before ever raising a hammer.
Add safety and style with railings
Choose the right materials
Railings can be one of the most visible parts of any deck so it should be considered at the same time as the deck boards. A good rule of thumb is to use the “three C’s,” which are: coordinate, contrast, customize. For example, crisp white posts and black aluminum balusters coordinate beautifully with gray deck boards, delivering an elegant look and feel. For a beachy vibe, opt for a contrasting look with all-white railings. Or go completely custom with sleek, black aluminum railings to create a space that’s both modern and inviting.
When selecting materials, invest in decking that can hold up against the harshest weather and messiest cookouts. High-performance, low-maintenance composite decking offers superior durability and long-lasting looks.
Don’t skimp on the substructure. Often overlooked, the substructure can have tremendous impact on performance and appearance. For maximum strength and stability, opt for steel framing over wood in order to achieve a consistently flat decking surface. Wooden substructures can split, warp and shift over time, leading to an uneven surface in the deck boards. Dimensionally stable steel offers durability benefits over wood, plus greater design flexibility, sustainability, safety and fire resistance.
Incorporate personal touches with accessories
Get the right tools In addition to magazines, TV shows and social platforms offer outdoor living ideas and inspiration. There are also a number of online tools designed to help guide you through the planning process, such as the Trex Deck Starter, which can help anyone at the outset of their deck building adventures. It provides a user-friendly way to experiment with various deck configurations and design combinations. In three simple steps, the tool can help you
It can also outperform both wood and PVC alternatives over time. With a wood deck, the cost of regular sanding, staining and painting compound considerably over time. Over the life of a composite deck, the reduced maintenance costs of simple soap and water cleanings can add up to a greater return on investment - not to mention the value of all the time spent enjoying your deck rather than maintaining it.
Have fun exploring the many design elements that are available for customizing your deck. Things like built-in seating, planters and storage, as well as add-ons such as a pergola or outdoor furniture, which can add comfort, character and convenience to your outdoor living space. Further personalize your space with a variety of deck and landscape lighting fixtures. Set up path lights to brighten walkways and use spotlights to showcase trees and architectural features. Easy to install and energy efficient, an option like Trex Landscape Lighting can help keep your outdoor enjoyment going long after the sun goes down.

An adjustable base can help take your sleep to new heights. Today, adjustable bases come in a variety of designs and sizes, and are usually discrete and sturdy. If you suffer from neck pain or back pain, sleeping in a reclined position in an adjustable bed can help decrease the pressure on your spine by creating an angle between your thighs and trunk, according to Healthline. Bases are easily customizable, usually via remote, so you can find your favorite bed position, whether you’re sleeping, reading or lounging. Learn more about adjustable bases at mattressfirm. com. Remember, you don’t have to rush and upgrade your entire bedroom all at one time. To ensure you’re getting the best value, look for deals on specific items throughout the year and rely on retailers such as Mattress Firm that can help stretch your budget, offering you more for less.

euse, reduce, recycle is a mantra used by many eco-
conscious men and women. Reducing, reusing and recycling is not just a great
way to conserve energy and natural resources, but also an effective means to saving money. Men and women may not know it, but they likely have many items around the house that they can reuse and repurpose. This can reduce the amount of trash sent to landfills and help conserve the resources used to manufacture new products. The following are some common household items that can be reused or repurposed.

2018 kitchen and bath trends Family Features
W
hen it’s time for a home remodel, specifically of a bathroom or kitchen, many homeowners turn to trendy looks as inspiration. Color, texture and material variance, like using different types of tile, lead the way in this year’s kitchen and bath trends. To help amplify the look and appeal of your space, consider these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry:
Try different shades White is classic, crisp and always in style, while gray also provides a traditional look. Many designers pair white or gray cabinets, tile and wall color with a pop of color to add interest without overwhelming the space. There are many ways to introduce color, such as a bright island or items that are easily switched out like window treatments and artwork. Combining different shades of white, gray and other neutral colors like beige is an effective way to create a warm and inviting
space. One important note to consider when mixing these hues is that they need to be in the same color family. When incorporating white and gray, go for colors that have the same base - either yellow or blue. Mixing a yellow-gray with a blue-white can result in discord that may not “feel” right. A qualified remodeler who has experience in design can provide expert advice and guide the decisionmaking process to help avoid costly mistakes.
Consider various tile types Another popular treatment in kitchens and bathrooms is to use different types of tile and surface stone. Incorporating tile of different shapes and texture such as quartz, marble or granite can energize even the smallest space. Scale provides another way to create interest. To achieve a mosaic feel, look for 1-by-1-foot tiles prepped on larger 12-by-12-foot sheets. Sometimes these sheets include a predefined pattern that can help simplify
installation.
Pick alternate patterns Tile options are available in many varieties, so it can be difficult to know where to start. Subway tile, a classic standby, can be invigorated by arranging the rectangular 3-by6-inch shapes in patterns like herringbone or basket weave. This versatile tile can be used in both traditional kitchens and bathrooms as well as transitional or more contemporary spaces. Many manufacturers now include textured tile, featuring patterns that carry the look of wood grain; tiles are also available in threedimensional textures adding movement and interest with easy care. For example, using a variety of gray hues can create a relaxing and warm environment.

Spring into lawn and garden care
Family Features
I
f cooler weather has you longing for sunny days outdoors, take heart. Once spring rolls around, you can safely begin the annual cleanup to prepare your yard for months of warm-weather enjoyment. Start by evaluating your lawn. Look for bald spots where grass has grown sparsely and
needs reseeding, or uneven areas that may need to be filled and leveled. Before you take steps to correct any problems, you’ll need a clean slate. Clear the yard of any leaves, rocks or sticks that may have accumulated then cut the grass as short as you can. Use a thatching rake to remove dead roots and grass. Break up the soil in bare spots to create an environment that will be hospitable to new seed. Add lawn soil to level the surface. You’ll also need to apply an herbicide to treat weed-infested areas. Allow the weed killer to work for about a week then rake again to remove dead weeds. Then you’re ready to over-seed or spot seed, depending on your lawn’s needs. Your climate will determine the best grass variety for your
yard. Be sure to select and apply a fertilizer that is consistent with your grass type and water thoroughly to promote deep root growth, which can help your lawn withstand extreme conditions as temperatures rise. Your lawn isn’t the only part of your yard that needs attention during the spring months, though. Your garden and flower beds may need some care before they, too, are ready to burst with new bounty and color. Begin by clearing your garden and beds of any debris like leaves and other matter that piled up during months of neglect. Gently turn the soil and work in fresh fertilizer. Before your plants and flowers are in full-growth mode is the ideal time to make repairs. Check edging for any damage, replace rotted woodwork and complete any other maintenance tasks. As for the plants, prune before the first buds sprout to minimize stress. You can also start indoor seeds, and early spring is the time to divide perennials and plant some hardier vegetables, such as onions and potatoes. 5 ways to refresh your home for spring
Family Features
S
pring is a time for renewal and awakenings. It’s also the perfect time to take your cues from Mother Nature and devise a plan to reduce and reimagine your way to a refreshing, updated home you can fully enjoy once more.
Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able - and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.
Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.
Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your
home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or powerwash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.
Revise for real life If there’s an area of your home that isn’t quite working for your lifestyle, spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to make a change. That may mean reconfiguring furniture for a more functional living room or converting an underused guest room into a useful craft or project space. Take time to consider what changes will make the space more practical, and even sketch out some possibilities on paper to fine-tune your ideas before you get to work.
Discover new decor A spring refresh is about more than just decluttering and cleaning, it’s about giving new life to your home with new decor, accessories and artwork. One affordable option: seek out unexpected treasures by shopping for great bargains at thrift stores. The proceeds from the sale of items found at shops like The Salvation Army Thrift and Family Stores go to help those in need, and it’s one simple way to update your decor without spending a fortune. Visit SATruck.org to schedule a donation pick-up or find a thrift store near you.

Potential threats to pets

P
ets love to roam free, and homeowners with outdoor space often let their pets get some exercise and play time in their backyards. While it’s important for pets like dogs and even some cats to get some time outdoors, pet owners should recognize the potential threats to pet health looming in their lawns and gardens.
vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, and, in some instances, death. The amount of these toxins present in a given batch of this type of mulch may not be readily known, so homeowners should avoid applying it.
Mulch
The PPH notes that the active ingredient in slug and snail baits is metaldehyde, which is highly poisonous to cats and dogs. Symptoms of distress, including restlessness, vomiting, seizures, and high body temperature, can appear as soon as one hour after these baits are ingested. The baits are typically available in pellet, granular, powder, and liquid form, but each should be avoided by pet owners who allow their pets to play in their yards.
According to the Pet Poison Helpline, mulch made from cocoa beans can pose a threat to pets. This type of mulch is made of discarded hulls or shells of the cocoa bean. These byproducts of chocolate production contain varying concentrations of the toxins theobromine and caffeine. When ingested in high concentrations, these toxins can cause

Compost Compost is a great and natural way to enrich soil. But compost piles should be cordoned off so curious pets cannot access them. As the organic matter within compost piles decomposes, mold can begin to grow. If ingested by pets, moldy materials inside compost piles can make pets sick in as little as 30 minutes. Pets who have ingested moldy compost may appear agitated, pant, drool, or vomit, and some may even suffer from tremors or seizures.
Flowers/plants Of course, some flowers and plants can pose a threat to pets as well. Before planting new plants and/or flowers in their gardens, homeowners should inquire at their local gardening center or speak with their veterinarians to confirm if the plants or flowers are safe to ingest. If not, do not plant them or plant them in raised garden beds that cannot be accessed by curious pets.
Fertilizers Certain types of fertilizer also may be harmful to pets. According to the PPH, fertilizers that contain blood meal, bone meal, feather meal, and iron can be dangerous to dogs. When ingested in large doses, such products can form a concretion in the stomach, which can obstruct the gastrointestinal tract and cause severe pancreatitis. Fertilizers that are high in iron also can contribute to iron poisoning if ingested by pets.

The basics of mulching
MetroCreative
M
ulch is available in various forms. Like other land and garden products, mulch can go a long way toward helping plants thrive. Mulch comprises just about any material that is spread over the surface of soil. Its purpose is primarily to help soil retain moisture. In addition, mulch can staunch weed growth, keep soil cool, improve the aesthetics of garden beds, and even improve soil nutrient composition. When the right mulch is chosen, it can reduce the amount of time homeowners spend watering and weeding their gardens and insulate plants from dramatic changes in weather.
types will need to be amended or replaced as they degrade. Those who want the most environmentally-friendly mulching materials can choose all-natural mulches instead of synthetic alternatives. To work effectively, mulch should be applied in a two- to three-inch layer of material, state the experts at Old World Garden
Gardeners may not realize that mulch also can prevent garden soil from becoming overly compacted, according to HGTV. This can mean beneficial earthworms can move easily through the soil, creating channels for water and depositing their nutrientrich waste products. Gardeners can choose organic or inorganic mulch. Organic mulches are derived from natural materials that will decompose over time, lending organic matter as well as various nutrients to the soil. Organic mulches also may contain beneficial microorganisms that can fight against plant diseases. Inorganic mulches may be made of stones, landscape fabrics and plastic. Both

Farms. This is the ideal amount to retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth without choking plants. Also, mulch that is too thick may make it impossible for water to penetrate, or it may prevent the soil from airing out, causing continuously wet conditions that lead
to root and stem rot. The University of Connecticut Home & Garden Education Center says mulch should not be placed directly against plant crowns or tree bases, as this can promote the development of disease. It may also serve as a habitat for bark- and stem-eating rodents. The center also suggests watering newly installed bark or wood mulches to prevent fungi from colonizing in dry mulch and causing problems like a water-repellent surface on the mulch. Home landscapers considering mulch types may find that compost, manure and grass clippings (from nonpesticide-treated lawns) can be inexpensive and versatile in garden beds. The home advice site The Spruce notes that newspaper may also be effective. Many newspapers have switched over to organic dyes, especially for their black and white sections. Newspapers are an inexpensive way to suppress weeds and act like organic mulch in beds. They can be covered with other organic mulch, like shredded bark, for more visual appeal. Mulch can be a versatile asset when doing gardening projects around home landscapes. And the benefits are more than just aesthetic.

Experiment with growing edibles indoors MetroCreative
F
oodies find it hard to beat vine-ripened tomatoes plucked right out of a garden. Other edibles, such as fresh lettuce for a small luncheon salad or a handful of fresh parsley right out of a pot to add to a marinade, also add a lot to meals. The convenience and flavor of freshly grown edibles propels many home gardeners to grow produce and herb gardens in their yards. But those short on outdoor space may be happy to learn that many edibles grow equally as well indoors as outdoors.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes should be reserved for the sunniest spot in a home or one where additional UV light can be used. Tomatoes will need pots or containers that are roughly six inches deep with ample drainage. Keep in mind that tomatoes grown indoors will be smaller than outside fruits, and you may want to
sunny, warm location. ¡ Carrots: Natural Living Ideas says that if you have between four and five hours of bright sunlight per day and deep pots with loose, well-draining soil, you can cultivate carrots indoors. Carrots prefer cooler spots for sweet yields. Plus, carrot greens can make for attractive indoor decorations. ¡ Microgreens: Swiss chard, basil, dill, kale, and other greens can provide nutrient-dense additions to any meals. These plants do not require a lot of depth to a container and can thrive on a sunny windowsill in a room that’s between 60 and 70 F.
Many people maintain comfortable temperatures between 70 and 75 F in their homes all year long, which can be the ideal condition for growing an array of edibles no matter the season. For those with homes that receive ample sunlight (or if homeowners are willing to supplement with artifical light), growing conditions can be even stronger. An indoor garden can comprise as much space as a homeowner is willing to devote. Shelving can maximize vertical areas and enable gardeners to include even more planting room. Keep these tips in mind when cultivating indoor edible gardens.¡
¡ Scallions: These plants of the onion family add flavor to many recipes. When scallions are grown at home, gardeners can snip off the greens as needed. Choose deep pots so the scallions can establish strong root systems. ¡ Turnips: Large, deep pots are needed to grow turnips, says Loyal Gardener. You can grow them from seeds and be harvesting turnips in about two months.
consider plum or cherry tomato varieties. ¡ Cucumbers: For those fresh salad mixes, cucumbers can be grown indoors in large pots so they can have space to develop. Be sure to put a climbing structure in the pot so that vines can grow vertically, and place cucumbers in a
Homeowners or apartment dwellers can experiment with different types of edibles indoors. The result can be fresh foods no matter the season.
