Senior sightseeing Daily Orange graduating seniors share their recommendations on where to take family and friends over graduation weekend By Louis Platt culture editor

T

he Daily Orange’s staff have reported on and visited many locations in Syracuse. A few graduating staffers offered recommendations on where their fellow graduates should take their families and friends who are visiting for commencement weekend.

The Skä•noñh Center

The Skä•noñh – Great Law of Peace Center, located on Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool, tells the stories of the Indigenous peoples of central New York. The center rests near the shores of Onondaga Lake, where the Haudenosaunee Confederacy was founded. Anna Henderson, a former digital design editor at The D.O., recommends taking your family here over the weekend because the center tells Indigenous peoples’ history from their perspective rather than the colonizer’s. “I think to leave Syracuse without an understanding of the Indigenous history here would be a disservice to the education you’re supposed to come here to learn,” Henderson said.

CNY Regional Market

The first commencement ceremony of the weekend, which takes place on Saturday, doesn’t start until 4 p.m. That means there is plenty of time to stop by the Central New York Regional Market, which is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday. Since 1938, the market has been the Syracuse community’s go-to for local, fresh food such as bread, fruit and honey. Because of its 7 a.m. opening time, the market is perfect for students and parents who wake up early, said Sarah Slavin, a former assistant copy editor, copy chief, assistant feature editor and podcast host at The D.O. It’s difficult to get reservations at restaurants during the pandemic and during graduation weekend in general, so a picnic with food from the market is the route to go, Slavin said. “Find an outside place … and do a picnic,” Slavin said.

Elmwood Park

In Elmwood Park, visitors will find picnic tables and hiking trails along Furnace Creek, named after a furnace that used to make bullets in that area during the War of 1812. Former assistant news editor and enterprise editor Gabe Stern recommends taking family and friends here because of its history. It’s also a particularly nice place to get lost in, he said. “The history behind it just kind of enhances the experience itself,” Stern said. After the war, the land was used as farmland until 1889. It then hosted two resorts, but after a fire burned down one of the resorts in 1909, the plot of land remained vacant for over a decade. In 1920, the city bought the land and turned it into Elmwood Park. Stern recommended staying along the creek because you’ll find signs that recognize the park’s history as well as a mini waterfall. And if you’re unable to make it over to Elmwood, Stern recommends visit-

ing Thornden Park’s water tower —which is a short walk from campus — with a blanket in tow. “You can kind of see the Syracuse skyline,” he said. “You can see the campus and the sunsets. They are just great.”

Eden

Amy Nakamura, a former design editor, digital editor and feature editor, said she felt like she was in Brooklyn for the evening when she and her boyfriend went to Eden. The open-kitchen restaurant in Hanover Square sources the majority of its food locally. Nakamura said Eden is a great place to take friends and family for a celebratory dinner because of its gourmet menu — which currently includes a New York strip steak and goat cheese ravioli — and ambiance, which is ideal for some who prefer a quiet evening compared to some of the busier dining spots in downtown Syracuse. “We walked into Eden and we sat at the bar. And the food was phenomenal, probably one of the best meals I feel like I’ve had in Syracuse,” Nakamura said.

Everson Museum of Art

Diana Riojas, a former digital copy chief, asst. feature editor and feature editor, used to go to the Everson Museum of Art when she felt overwhelmed by schoolwork and needed a break. She appreciates how the Everson spotlights the work of local artists — such as Jaleel Campbell’s exhibit “Homecoming,” which is on display at the Everson until Aug. 1. Riojas said the museum is a great excursion for the in-between moments, like the time between commencement and dinner. Also, the museum’s community plaza is a nice outdoor location to simply hang off campus, and the museum hosts food trucks and vendors on its plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. “You could definitely spend an hour or two in between events and just check it out,” Riojas said. “Have a little bit of some calmness in between the busy graduation weekend.”

Anything But Beer

Dining with dietary restrictions can be a hassle. Former D.O. design editor, digital design director and presentation director Talia Trackim has celiac disease — a sensitivity to gluten — but Anything But Beer makes the dining experience safe and easy for her. The restaurant accommodates other dietary restrictions such as lactose intolerance and nut allergies, and the menu clearly states which dishes are suitable for each dietary restriction, she said. Trackim said her favorite dish is Anything But Beer’s mac and cheese made with potato gnocchi. She looks forward to returning to the gluten-free brewery and restaurant when her family is in town because of how safe they make people with gluten allergies and intolerances feel, and she recommends families give the restaurant a try during commencement weekend. “(It) makes me feel extra safe as a consumer because I can clearly see that the food is not gluten, and it hasn’t been contaminated by gluten,” Trackim said. louis@dailyorange.com @jbl_98

Fall 2017 - Spring 2021:

THE PAST 4 YEARS AT SU By Abby Weiss and Richard J Chang

A

s Syracuse University’s Class of 2021 looks back on an unprecedented college career, it’s hard to believe a campus can change so much in four years. Classes moved online. Semesters were cut short due

to the COVID-19 pandemic. Protests erupted against inequality. Students and faculty demanded institutional change. While it is difficult to boil down the last four years into a handful of events, The Daily Orange brainstormed 10 major events from fall 2017 to today. Here are our picks:

oct. 13, 2017

Clemson upset april 18, 2018 - april 21, 2018

SU expels Theta Tau fraternity

SU suspended its chapter of Theta Tau, a professional engineering fraternity, after video evidence showed fraternity members engaging in behaviors that were “extremely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist and hostile toward people with disabilities.” On April 18, student protesters gathered outside Chancellor Kent Syverud’s house and demanded SU release the videos. Syverud announced on April 21 that Theta Tau was permanently expelled from campus.

feb. 9, 2019

Ackerman Avenue Assault

Three students reported being approached and struck with a handgun by an unknown woman on the 800 block of Ackerman Avenue just after midnight on Feb. 9. A statement circulated among students the following Monday accusing SU and the Department of Public Safety of mishandling the incident. The statement said three students of color were assaulted by three white men and one white woman, who struck the students with a pistol and threatened to shoot them. SU’s Student Association and Student AfricanAmerican Society held a forum, where students called on administration and DPS to increase transparency and communication. People at the forum also said the assault was representative of a larger issue of students of color not feeling safe or welcome on campus.

sept. 14, 2019 SU opened the Barnes Center at The Arch after 18 months of construction and $50 million in renovations. Students praised the new fitness and health facility, which added new wellness amenities and consolidated all health and counseling services to a centralized location.

march 16 - march 22, 2020

On-campus classes suspended, 1st COVID-19 case in Onondaga county

SU suspended on-campus classes for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester just hours after the first confirmed case of the coronavirus in Onondaga County. University officials encouraged students to leave campus by March 22, and students took their classes online for the remainder of the semester. Students were welcomed back on campus for the fall 2020 semester, but they finished the last two weeks online after a spike in cases.

nov. 7, 2020

Joe Biden becomes the 1st SU alumnus elected president

The Syracuse College of Law graduate became the first SU alumnus elected president of the U.S. The former vice president won against Donald Trump after obtaining more than 290 electoral votes with victories in battleground states. His running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, became the first woman, first Black person and first Asian American person to be elected vice president. Biden and Harris assumed office in Jan. 2021.

Syracuse pulled off a monumental 27-24 upset of No. 2 Clemson, making this game one of the biggest victories in the program’s history. After quarterback Eric Dungey lunged at the end of a third-and-8 run to count for a first down, a crowd of 42,475 fans — made up of SU students and die-hard locals — stormed the field and embraced players.

sept. 16, 2018

A$AP Ferg, Playboi Carti co-headline Juice Jam Playboi Carti and A$AP Ferg co-headlined Juice Jam Music Festival in 2018. Playboi Carti rapped along to the audio of some of his hit songs like “Magnolia” and “Poke It Out,” but he left abruptly after the speaker malfunctioned. A$AP Ferg then energized the crowd before going into his classic cuts from A$AP Mob. Opening for the two were Anne-Marie, Loud Luxury and Omar Apollo.

feb. 20, 2019

Jim Boeheim hits, kills man in I-690 crash

Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed Syracuse resident Jorge Jimenez while driving on Interstate 690 late at night after SU’s game against Louisville. 51-year-old Jimenez was transported to Upstate University Hospital following the crash and was later pronounced dead. Jimenez’s estate filed a lawsuit against Boeheim in November, alleging the coach was negligent, driving an SUowned vehicle at a high rate of speed leading up to the crash.

nov. 2019 and feb.-march 2020

Hate crimes and protests

On Nov. 7, racist graffiti targeting Black and Asian students on the fourth and sixth floors of Day Hall was reported to DPS. SU did not release a statement until Renegade Magazine and The Daily Orange published reports of the graffiti. Student protesters issued demands to the university, urging SU to increase DPS transparency and implement diversity training for faculty and staff, and calling for the resignation of Chancellor Kent Syverud. #NotAgainSU, a movement led by Black students, held a sit-in at the newly-completed Barnes Center for eight days. The group would later occupy Crouse-Hinds Hall for 31 days during Feb. and March 2020 and issue additional demands.

sept. 27, 2020

Renovated Carrier Dome home opener

During the pandemic, SU continued renovations to the Carrier Dome, a $118 million project implementing accessibility measures that complied with guidelines from the Americans with Disabilities Act, improving Wi-Fi and adding a four-sided video board in the stadium’s center. The first game in the renovated Dome was the the football home opener. The game had no fans because of pandemic restrictions, but fans were later welcomed back into the Dome in March 2021 during the lacrosse season.
