The summer scoop Cool down with these Syracuse ice cream shops iel Palumbo’s favorites are the homemade coconut almond fudge ice cream and the watermelon sherbet with chocolate chips. Popular soft serve twists include the strawberry-pistachio and black raspberry-orange sherbet twists. Across the street from Arctic Island is Meachem Field, home to sports games all summer. Onondaga Creek runs next to the store, which Palumbo said he can see from his office window.
Kenny’s Corner Ice Cream
Location: 7575 Buckley Road #210, Syracuse
Monday – Friday 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday noon to 9 p.m. Kenny’s has a new addition to its location: a Fusion 8, an ice cream machine that can make eight different flavors. Home to the original “tuberry twist”, the ice cream spot now offers coconut, pistachio, cheesecake and “mochachino,” among other flavors. “We can do flavors that are fused into the mix instead of sprayed on, so it’s a more consistent flavor through, and we can offer that many more flavors,” Owner Michael Damiano said.

Bring the heat Salt City BBQ Festival to bring 30 teams to NY fairgrounds for fundraiser
By Sarah Slavin asst. copy editor
There’s going to be a lot of barbecue food this weekend at the Great New York State Fairgrounds. On Saturday, the fourth-annual Salt City BBQ Festival will be held from noon to 11 p.m. More than 30 teams will compete in a barbecue cook-off, sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society. The competition’s first prize is $800 and a chance to compete in the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue this fall. All proceeds raised at the festival will go toward event organizers Phoenix Philosophies, an organization that purchases and renovates homes for homeless veterans in Syracuse. Eileen Carr, president of Phoenix Philoso-
phies, said about 2,500 to 3,000 people attend the event every year. In the past, the festival has raised more than $20,000 for Phoenix Philosophies, making the festival its biggest fundraiser of the year. “A lot of the local teams will do other events with us, so it’s branched off in all different kinds of directions, and has been a real asset for Phoenix (Philosophies),” Carr said. Carr also said the competitors arrive a day early to start cooking their meat, getting ready for the competition. Judging is done with a double-blind process by certified barbecue judges from noon to 1:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., the winner will be announced. The event is held on Armed Forces Day to honor people currently enlisted and serving in the military. Veterans and active duty

Sun-kissed trails Hike the best central NY locations
By Kelsey Thompson
outdoor yoga, guided walks and family fishing days.
This summer, to unwind and take in some of the best natural sights central New York has to offer, hit the trails. Here are some of Syracuse’s best summer hiking spots.
Onondaga Lake Park
asst. feature editor
Green Lakes State Park
Located in Fayetteville, Green Lakes State Park is surrounded by 15 miles of trails and is a key tourist attraction for locals coming to glimpse 15,000 years’ worth of glacial remains, said Courtney Burdin, a park representative. The surrounding beaches also make for a popular spot, especially on summer holidays such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. The rowboat and kayak rentals are popular commodities, as well as the 18-hole Green Lakes State Park Golf Course. The park hosts events throughout the summer, including an astronomy program to catch a glimpse of Jupiter in orbit.

With nearly 700 acres of natural woodland, this Baldwinsville nature center makes hiking trails and natural thrills readily available to locals. Along with nine miles of trails, the area features more than 200 species of birds and more than 800 varieties of plants, as well as a 200-acre glacial lake visitors can stroll around on foot, or boat across in the park’s canoe rentals. Beaver Lake Nature Center’s mixed terrain provides the perfect opportunity for less experienced hikers to get a feel of the landscape. “Just take it slow, start on flat terrain and slowly build your endurance,” said Armando Villa-Ignacio, a park naturalist at the center. Besides hiking, the center hosts a variety of events, including horseback riding,
Dubbed “the Central Park of central New York,” Onondaga Lake Park is 7 1/2 miles long and features attractions including the Onondaga Lake Skatepark for skateboarders and BMX bikers, the Wegmans Good Dog Park and the Salt Museum, which honors Syracuse’s history as the “Salt City.” The park is composed of four main trails for visitors looking to stretch their legs: the East Shore Recreational, Shoreline Walking Trail, Lakeland Nature and the West Shore. The paved East Shore Recreational Trail is perfect for inline skaters and bicyclers. Walking pedestrians must make room for bikers, and dogs aren’t allowed on the trail during the in-season months of April to October. The Shoreline Walking Trail is most ideal for walkers and runners looking to take their workouts outdoors. Two miles in length and stroller and wheelchair-accessible, only foot traffic is permitted. If you’re interested in a peaceful and reflective walk through nature, the Lakeland Trail’s quiet solitude is for you. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the pathway, and skaters and bicyclists aren’t allowed to have pets, making for a peaceful escape from Syracuse city life. For those interested in hiking, West Shore Trail is best to get up close and personal with nature. This paved trail snakes its way through 4 1/2 miles of woodlands, making it a safe and ideal loop for bicyclers and runners. With views of Onondaga Lake and the city skyline, take advantage of the benches along the route to sit back, relax and take in a summer sunset. katho101@syr.edu | @writtenbykelsey

Summer spotlights
Live local theater and comedy shows to watch this summer
By Haley Robertson asst. feature editor
Local theaters are gearing up for a summer of live entertainment in Syracuse. The Central New York Playhouse, the Redhouse Arts Center and the Landmark Theatre are presenting musicals, plays and comedy shows throughout the upcoming months. “In the summer there’s a lot of entertainment options, but our air-conditioned theater is a nice place to spend two hours and laugh and cry and get away from the world for awhile,” said Dustin Czarny, artistic director of the CNY Playhouse. CNY Playhouse at ShoppingTown Mall in DeWitt will present “Into the Woods” from June 8-23, “Rock of Ages” from July 13-28 and “It’s Only a Play” from Aug. 9-18. “Into the Woods” follows the story of a baker and his wife who meet fairytale characters in their quest to have a child. The show is a family-favorite “musical theater staple” about raising children in a world of fairytale and harsh reality, Czarny said. Rehearsals for the production, directed by Korrie Taylor, are currently in full swing. “Rock of Ages,” directed by Dan Rowlands, is an ‘80s rock jukebox musical about an aspiring rocker who falls in love with a small-town girl. The duo tries to save the Sunset Strip from capitalist developers with the help of rock legend Stacee Jaxx. With ‘80s hits including “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “We Built This City,” the show follows CNY Playhouse’s tradition of producing “loud and raucous” summer musicals, Czarny said. Unlike “Into the Woods,” Czarny said, “Rock of Ages” isn’t suitable for young children. CNY Playhouse’s August production is typically an “experimental production,” Czarny said. “It’s Only a Play” is about a cast and creative team waiting to hear the opening night reviews of their new Broadway play.
The Landmark Theatre is set to run two comedy shows this summer. They will also host various other events. courtesy of landmark theatre
Redhouse Arts Center on South Salina Street will present “La Cage aux Folles” from May 31 to June 10. The musical tells the story of drag club owner, Georges, and his partner, Albin, a star performer. Broadway veteran Dirk Lumbard will
star as Georges. His first experience with “La Cage” was watching the 1978 film. “It was a very important story that had never been told, and it still resonates I think as being a very important story to keep going forward,” Lumbard said.
Starring as Albin is Redhouse favorite Steve Hayes, who performed his one-man show at the Redhouse last month. Hayes and Lumbard have worked together before — they both starred in “Xanadu” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” at the Connecticut Repertory Theatre. “He’s not easy to play off of because he can just crack you up, he’s so funny,” Lumbard said of Hayes. Lumbard said he is “over the moon” to work with Hayes and director Cassie Abate again. “La Cage aux Folles” is the final performance of Redhouse’s 2017-18 mainstage season. Redhouse hosts several performance and theater design workshops for children ages 6-17 throughout the summer. The Landmark Theatre will host two comedy shows this summer: “Seinfeld Live” on June 8 and “Miranda Sings Live…No Offense” on July 14. Jerry Seinfeld will deliver his famous stand-up comedy routine and ‘Miranda Sings’ will perform comedy and musical numbers made famous on her YouTube channel. ‘Miranda Sings’ is a character created by performer Colleen Ballinger, who went viral after Ballinger made an appearance on Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” Katie Stam, the marketing and administrative coordinator at the Landmark, said summer is the theater’s “downtime” as they gear up for the 2018-19 season. The venue will host private events throughout the summer, such as graduation ceremonies, graduation parties and weddings. The Broadway in Syracuse 2018-19 season will kick off with “Fiddler on the Roof” in October. The Landmark plans to announce more shows for the fall season in the next couple months, said Mike Intaglietta, executive director of the Landmark Theatre.

Sizzling stadiums
Summer in Syracuse also means busy stadiums
By Lydia Niles feature editor
The Carrier Dome may be empty over the next few months, but that doesn’t mean Syracuse sports fans can’t get their fix. Here’s where to make a pit stop from all of the hiking, biking and exploring during the upcoming summer months.
Baseball: Syracuse Chiefs
Location: 1 Tex Simone Drive, Syracuse Season: April – September The minor league team of Syracuse and Triple-A affiliate for the Washington Nationals season runs through September. They will play games all over central New York, as well as home games at NBT Bank Stadium. After losing to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 6-5 in their season opener, the team is 18 – 16 so far. But their home stadium is reason enough to attend the games — this season’s deals include “Mangia Monday,” “Taco Tuesday” and “Winning Wednesday.”
Soccer: Syracuse FC
Location: Onondaga Community College, Syracuse Season: May – June After officially joining the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) in 2017, Syracuse FC is no longer new, but most of their talent is. With only a few returning players, the team will play their home opener at Onondaga Community College’s Lazer Stadium against conference champions Erie Commodores FC, according to Kristen Klawitter, director of communications for SFC. “This team is looking more cohesive than last year, already before the season begins. They’ve really just been practicing for about two weeks,” Klawitter said in response to feedback she’s heard of the this year’s team. Klawitter also said the SFC coaches are

excited about the prospect of competing in the NPSL playoffs. With free stadium parking and a competitive team, the SFC games are a great way to get to know the next sports team.
Oswego Speedway
Location: 300 E. Albany St., Oswego
Season: May – September The speedway, located about 45 minutes outside of Syracuse, is packed with events this summer. The Speedway’s 68th Annual Opening Day event is set for May 26, with the pits opening at 11:30 a.m., according to their website. To get a sneak peak of the opening event, check out the
open practice session the week before, with pit passes selling for $25. The session runs from 1 – 5 p.m. on May 19. The Speedway offers free admission to active military with an ID, as well as free admission for kids 16 and under when accompanied by a paid adult. lnilesst@syr.edu
