The Sphinx Senior Society is pleased to induct its Honorary Member for 2023. She is Dorothy E. Roberts. An acclaimed scholar of race, gender and the law, Prof. Roberts joined the University of Pennsylvania as a “Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor” with joint appointments in the Departments of Africana Studies and Sociology and the Law School where she holds the inaugural Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander chair. She is also founding director of the Penn Program on Race, Science & Society in the Center for Africana Studies.

Prof. Roberts’ path breaking work in law and public policy focuses on urgent social justice issues in policing, family regulation, science, medicine, and bioethics. Her major books include Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-first Century (New Press, 2011); Shattered Bonds: The Color of Child Welfare (Basic Books, 2002); and Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty (Pantheon, 1997). Prof. Roberts is the author of more than 100 scholarly articles and book chapters, as well as a co- editor of six books on such topics as constitutional law and women and the law.

The Society is also pleased to present the 2023 winner of the annual Sphinx Senior Society Paul Miller Award for Public Service Leadership. He is John Palmer, NU’23. John has dedicated his college career to being a “leader of leaders” in the tradition of the late Paul Miller, C’83.*

The Society recognizes John for his extraordinary leadership in elevating the impact of the School of Nursing as President of the Student Nurses of Penn. He has also achieved a state-wide impact and galvanized the Pennsylvania student nursing community as President of the Student Nursing Association of Pennsylvania. Further, he has impacted student nursing on a national level as Chair of the Council of State Presidents for the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). John is also the first Penn student to receive the NSNA’s Core Values Award. At Penn, John has elevated the nursing curriculum at Penn as the Student Representative to the Penn Nursing Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. John has also received national recognition of his innovative program for Penn nursing students: “Supporting Yourself While Supporting Others: Self Care Strategies for Nursing Students.” John Palmer leaves future Penn nursing students his legacy of leadership and accomplishment on which they can build while he advances now into his chosen profession as one of our most appropriate and distinguished recipients of the Paul Miller Award for Public Service Leadership.

*Coping with life-long dwarfism at 4’5”, Paul Miller still excelled in campus and public service leadership as a Scribe of the Society and cherished Mask & Wig performer. Later, he was a leading author of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and a Commissioner on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 1994-2004. In 2008, the University of Washington appointed Miller the Henry M. Jackson Professor of Law. At the installation ceremony for this position, a Harvard Law School colleague commented,”Paul Miller may have been born a dwarf, but in reality he is a giant. We are all better for seeing a little further from the perch of his shoulders.” Paul Miller died of cancer in 2010, leaving a wife, two children, scores of admirers, and the inspiration in 2011 for the creation of this annual award.
