Head - Rice Research Station in Kerala, India, talks about the usual problems in rice production and how it can be overcome. The advice holds good for a majority of rice growing farms. Oryza: What according to you prevents rice plants from give out their maximum output? Dr Leena: In hot countries like India, it is biotic stress caused due to insects, rodents, roundworms and weeds. My team and I have done research in Kerala which suffers from high humidity and temperature which is actually conducive for growth of pests and infections. Oryza: Have you found any specific microbes or insects harming the rice plants? Dr Leena: Brown Plant Hopper, Stem borer, rice bug, leaf roller and Gall midge besides blue beetle and rice whorl maggot are notorious for gnawing at rice plants. Fungal diseases like Rice Blast, Sheath blight, Sheath rot, viral diseases like Rice Tungro Virus, Grassy Stunt Virus, bacterial diseases like bacterial leaf blight cause damage to crops. Rodents cause almost one-third crop loss in rice in places like Kuttanad in Kerala, south India. Oryza: What about abiotic stress factors affecting the plant? Dr Leena: Extreme temperatures, variant humidity, drought, water logging, salinity in soil are a few problems. States or countries like Kerala with a long coastal line typically have lagoons or backwaters encompassing large areas connecting mainland to the sea or ocean. In most coastal farms, deltas at river mouths and reclaimed backwaters are either at sea level or 1.5 m below the Mean Sea Level. This leads to interference of sea water up to 15 or 20 km upstream during high tides. Oryza: What about elemental deficiencies that coastal areas face? Dr Leena: Zinc, Copper, Calcium and Magnesium deficiency can hinder the cropâ€&#x;s output. We have noticed in our research that nearly one-third of the total land in Kuttanad area (our area of interest) suffers from Zinc, Copper and Calcium deficiency. Nearly 15% of the area suffered from Magnesium deficiency. Drought is also a common problem. Oryza: What is the solution to these problems? Dr Leena: Besides crop intelligence the farmers gain through their work, they should also make use of painstaking research happening around to better the yield. Farmers should embrace scientific approach and customized solutions to farming to overcome problems.

Pope Francis Makes His Own Spin on “Rice Bucket Challenge” Oct 13, 2014
Living up to his nickname “The People’s Pope,” Pope Francis gave 100 kgs of rice to poor families in Tor Bella Monaca, a multi-ethnic, poverty-stricken area of Rome. Several days ago, the papal almoner Konrad Krajewsky sent the product to a social association called Istituto di Medicina Solidale (Institute of Medicine Solidarity) in this district. The rice will be part of the food bag that the Institute supplies to families in order to contribute to their food resources during periods of deep economic crisis – like now. Years ago, a financial crisis would have hit immigrant families harder, but now Italian families are also affected by low incomes and the loss of work. This is not the first time Pope Francis has helped this area in Rome – since he is also the Bishop of Rome, he is familiar with the people and knows where poverty lies.In 2013 the Istituto di Medicina Solidale distributed 1,500 food bags and visited 10,000 persons in need of help in this area alone. Africa Domestic Rice Prices Surge Due to Ebola Outbreak, Says FAO

Domestic rice prices in the Ebola-affected countries such as Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have increased in September despite ongoing 2014 harvests, says the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in its latest Global Food Price Monitor (GFPM) report. Governments' restrictions on movement of goods and people to control the virus has led to severe shortages of labor and increased transportation costs. Reduced imports during the month as well as fears of further declines in food supplies also added to the plight. All the three countries are net importers of rice. Rice prices in Madagascar also increased in September lower than expected increase in the 2014 production level. According to the FAO, domestic rice prices in Asia have shown mixed trends in September 2014, according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). While domestic prices in Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines declined sharply, prices increased in China and Sri Lanka. Prices in India, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Vietnam were relatively stable, says the FAO. Wholesale rice prices in Thailand declined in September 2104 due to supplies from the ongoing main season harvest, slow import demand and lower export prices. Average prices of medium quality rice in Indonesia declined during the month with increased output from the 2014 secondary season harvest. Rice prices in the Philippines, which have seen significant increases during the last few months, declined in September due to expected increase in the output from the 2014 main season harvest. The government's attempts to increase official imports this year to replenish stocks and control prices also proved fruitful. Prices in Myanmar continued to decline for the second consecutive month due to reduced export demand from China. Rice prices in India, Cambodia and Vietnam were stable during the month reflecting a decline in export demand as well as adequate stocks. Retail prices of Japonica rice in China increased in September 2014 due to strong domestic demand and high minimum support prices (MSP). Rice prices in Sri Lanka increased sharply during the month due to expected decline in this year's paddy production and reduced supplies. Rice export prices in general declined in September 2014 after increasing consistently for the last three months due to a strong competition between markets, including Thailand, India, Vietnam and Pakistan, arrival of newly harvested crops and strengthening of the U.S. dollar against major currencies. USDA Forecasts India 2014-15 Rice Production to Decline 4% to 102 Million Tons due to BelowNormal Rains Oct 13, 2014
In its latest World Agricultural Production Estimates report, USDA has forecasted India's 2014-15 rice production to decline by about 4% to around 102 million tons from around 106.4 million tons in 2013 due to delayed and below-normal rains in this monsoon season (June - September). USDA has forecasted India 2014 rice acreage at around 43.5 million hectares, down about 1% from around 43.9 million hectares in 2013. It has also forecasted 2014 paddy yield to decline by about 3.4% y/y to around 3.52 tons per hectare. The report delayed rains have slowed down nursery preparations in most of the rice producing states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and western Haryana. Also less moisture levels in soil due to water deficits have affected growth prospects for the rice crop in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, southern states as well as the northeastern states. USDA says while most of the output from the kharif rice crop (June - December), which accounts for about 85% of India's total rice production, has been impacted due to lower rainfall, it is expecting favorable soil moisture conditions, replenished irrigation reservoirs and relatively firm domestic prices would encourage famers to begin planting for the rabi crop (November - April), which is likely to begin shortly. USDA is expecting output from rabi crop to offset losses from the kharif crop to some extent.
