Dash of Lime Transforms Low Acid Soil for Rice Cultivation, Researchers Say Jun 19, 2014 Adding lime to soil with lower acidic content can improve rice production, a study by Dr Shamshuddin Jusop and colleagues at the Universiti Putra Malaysia concluded. Lime, also known as calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide, is a calcium compound used to improve crops grown in soils deficient in acidic content. Acid sulphate soils with pH less than 3.5 have high amounts of aluminium (Al) and hence unsuitable for cultivation. In a study conducted in Merbok, Malaysia, the team treated an acid sulphate paddy with ground magnesium limestone (GML), hydrated lime and liquid lime. T

he pH of water from the rice field was 3.7 and the Al concentration was 878 uM. uM is a measure of concentrationRice plants grown under soil with these parameters suffer from acid and aluminium stress which affect rice growth. The study documented the effects of applying lime from various sources on an acid sulphate soil. The researchers tested MR 219, a common paddy variety in Malaysia by administering 4 tons of GML per hectare at a cost of US$382. In the first season, drought hit the rice plants and during the second, rice blast fungus invaded them. However, the rice yield was 3.5 tons per hectare - as much as the average national yield of 3.8 ton per hectare. As the rice was sold at US$318, the results were worth the effort, the team inferred.

Winning World Cup Recipes: Greece vs Japan Jun 19, 2014 What better way to celebrate the World Cup festivities from afar than with some regionally-themed rice dishes! For Thursday’s match, Greek dolmades are up against Japanese onigiri. These recipes are almost opposites of each other – in one, grape leaves are wrapped around a rice mixture, and in the other, sticky rice envelopes a plum. And, of course, they’re adaptable – replace that pickled plum with fish, beef, or another veggie; or try adding meat to the rice mixture in the grape leaves for a more filling meal. Japanese Onigiri (Rice Balls) What You Need: 4 cups short-grain white rice (you want a sticky, starchy rice for this recipe), rinsed 8 umeboshi (dried plums) Nori (dry seaweed), cut into strips Salt What You Do: Add the rice and 4.5 cups of water to a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and cover. Continue to simmer the rice until the water is absorbed, about 15-20 minutes. Then let the rice rest for about 15 minutes as it continues to steam.

Let the rice cool. (You may find it helpful to spread it out on a cookie sheet to speed up the cooling-off process if you’re in a hurry.) Wash your hands and sprinkle them with salt to keep the rice from sticking to your hands. Divide the rice into 8 equal portions. (Or more or less, depending on how big you want your onigiri.) Each portion will become a rice ball. Mold a portion of rice into a triangular shape with an indentation in the middle. Press a piece of umeboshi into the indentation and wrap the rice around it to cover it, shaping it into a triangle. (Try using plastic wrap to help you shape it if you’re having trouble.) Wrap a strip of nori around the rice ball and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Note: If you’d like to try a non-vegetarian option, mix a teaspoon or so of bonito flakes (dry fish flakes) with some soy sauce to create a paste-like mixture that goes inside the ball instead of the umeboshi. Greek Dolmades (Stuffed Grape Leaves) What You Need: 60 grape vine leaves, drained and rinsed if canned; washed and blanched if fresh 1 cup rice 1 cup olive oil 2 onions, finely chopped Juice from 2 lemons 4 tablespoons fresh dill ½ cup parsley

What You Do: Remove the stems from the vine leaves and drain or pat dry. Heat a large saucepan over medium heat and add 1/3 cup olive oil and the chopped onions. Sauté the onions until translucent. Add the rice and sauté for 1 minute.

Pour in 2 cups of warm water and the juice from one lemon. Simmer for about 7 minutes, or until the rice absorbs all of the water and is parboiled. Add the dill and parsley, and season with salt and pepper. Stir until mixed, then remove from heat and let cool some. Begin rolling your dolmades: Place a grape leaf shiny-side down and spoon about a tablespoon of the filling near the stem of the leaf. Fold the stem end over the filling and fold both sides toward the middle, and then roll them up (like a cigar or burrito). Make sure they are snugly wrapped, but not overly full because the rice will expand some as it cooks. Place the rolls seam-side down on the bottom of the pot, making sure they are snugly fit together and layered tightly. Drizzle the remaining olive oil and lemon juice over the rolls and season with salt and pepper. Add enough water (or broth, if you’d like) to barely cover the rolls. Cover them and simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the water has been absorbed. Remove the pot from heat and uncover. Let cool for at least 30 minutes. Serve cold or at room temperature and with a squeeze of fresh lemon. Tags: World Cup, soccer, football, Rice recipe, recipe, food, cooking

Vietnam Secures 200,000 Ton Rice Export Contract with Malaysia Jun 19, 2014 Vietnam has secured a 200,000 tons rice export contract with Malaysia, according to Reuters. According to the contract, Vietnam's state-owned rice export corporation VINAFOOD II will export 200,000 tons of 5% broken white rice to Malaysia this year. The price is fixed at $410 per ton, free on board basis. Loading to Malaysia will take place in July and August, local trade sources were quoted as saying.

The deal is biggest since Vietnam clinched the Philippines 800,000 tons rice import contract in April this year. It is expected to support rice export prices ahead of supplies from the winter-spring crop (January - July) harvests in the Red River Delta. According to the FAO rice price data, average export prices of Viet 25% broken rice increased to about $364 per ton in May 2014, up about 2% from about $356 per ton in April 2014. But they have declined by about 4% from the beginning of this year. Viet 5% prices also increased marginally to about $598 per ton in May 2014 from about $386 per ton in April 2014, but are down from about $401 per ton in the beginning of this year.Malaysia is Vietnam's traditional rice export destination. Vietnam exported about 465,977 tons of rice in 2013, down about 39% from about 764,692 tons exported in 2012, according to data from General Statistics Office of Vietnam.

Labor Shortages and Reduced Supplies from State Warehouses Escalating Thai Rice Export Prices, Says TREA Jun 19, 2014 The Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA) has expressed concern that labor shortages and reduced rice supplies from state warehouses since the military government took over on May 22, 2014, are leading to an increase in Thai rice export prices, according to Bloomberg. The TREA Honorary President has told local media sources that nearly 200,000 migrant workers involved in loading rice from warehouses and moving it to vessels at ports have left the country fearing military crackdown on illegal labor. He noted that due to this there are delays in shipping rice to destination countries, and prices have increased to a three-month high. Private trade sources say currently only 500 tons of rice is being loaded per day compared with normal pace of 2,000 - 3,000 tons a day. According to data from the Department of Employment, Thailand has nearly 2.23 million migrant workers, including 1.82 million people who entered the country illegally. The data shows that 1.74 million are from Myanmar, 395,000 from Cambodia and 96,000 from Laos. The TREA Honorary President also stated that halting of rice sales by the military government from state warehouses is also putting upward pressure on rice export prices, adding that they are expecting prices to increase by about $20 per ton in the next two months. The military government stopped rice sales to review the

quality and quantity of rice stocks in the warehouses. Currently prices of Thai 5% white rice stand at $398 per ton, up about 2% from about $389 per ton in May 2014.

While Thailand is expected to reclaim its world top rice exporter status this year, analysts say the current rise in Thai rice export prices may prompt many foreign customers to move to cheaper Vietnam rice.USDA estimates Thailand to export about 9 million tons of rice in 2014, up about 34% from about 6.7 million tons exported in 2013. It expects Thai rice exports to account for about 22% of global rice exports this year.

FAO Estimates Indonesia 2014 Imports at 1.1 Million Tons; Up 60% from Last Year Jun 19, 2014

The UN's Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) has estimated Indonesia's 2014 milled rice imports at around 1.1 million tons, up about 60% from about 687,500 tons imported in 2013. Analysts are also expecting Indonesia to more than double its rice imports to around 1.5 million tons in 2014 from an estimated 700,000 tons imported in 2013 ahead of a general election and El Nino. The FAO estimates Indonesia's 2014 paddy rice production at 72 million tons (around 45.36 million tons, basis milled), up about 1% from about 71.3 million tons (around 45 million tons, basis milled) produced in 2013. Harvesting of the 2013-14 main season paddy crop (October - June), which accounts for about 95% of annual production, is nearing completion and planting for the 2014 secondary season crop (July - December) will begin shortly and continue until August. Localized flooding due to heavy rains from mid-January to late February on some regions and deficit rainfall between early March and late April in some regions have had minimal impact on the 2014 paddy rice crop. Average rice prices increased in June 2014 after declining in April and May. Prices increased continuously between October 2013 and March 2014. According to the FAO rice price data, currently, average prices in Indonesia stand at about IDR 8.79 million (around $734, using current exchange rate) per ton, slightly up from about IDR 8.76 million (around $770, using historical exchange rate) per ton, and up by about 6% from about IDR 8.28 million (around $840, using historical exchange rate) per ton. USDA estimates Indonesia to produce around 37.355 million tons of rice, basis milled, and import around 1.5 million tons of rice in 2014. It estimates 2014 Indonesia's rice imports to more than double from around 650,000 tons in 2013, while 2014 production is expected to increase by just 2% from 36.55 million tons in 2013. Consumption in 2014 is expected to increase by 1% to around 38.65 million tons from 38.127 million tons in 2013.

Poor Rice Storage and Distribution Systems in Indian States may Hinder Government Plans to Check Inflation, Say Analysts

Indian government has been very modest in increasing rice allocations to state governments by around 5 million tons over the requisite rice stocks for the targeted public distribution system (TDPS) for the above poverty line (APL) families to ensure adequate supplies and curb price hikes, but analysts fear if the state governments would distribute rice stocks effectively.A review of the states' distribution patterns in the recent years shows that they have underutilized the allocations, say local sources. In FY 2013-14 (April - March), state governments distributed only half of the extra allocated rice stocks. A Food Ministry official noted that some state governments have not distributed the entire amount allocated under TPDS. Due to a significant increase in rice procurement for the last few years, the central government has been allocating extra rice to the state governments for distribution to APL families as well as 200 poorest districts in the country. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) allocates rice to the state governments on the instructions from the Food Ministry. Sources from the Food Ministry say the FCI allocates rice on time but State governments delay in taking possession of the allocated rice due to the lack of storage and distribution capacity in the respective states. Experts are warning that just allocating extra rice without dealing with a faulty TPDS system would not help in containing inflation.

Philippines NPCC Urges NFA to Double Daily Rice Release Limit to 8,000 Tons to Prevent Shortages and Curb Price Hikes Jun 19, 2014

The Philippines National Price Coordinating Council (NPCC) has urged the National Food Authority (NFA) to double its daily rice release limit from 4,000 tons to 8,000 tons to prevent shortages and curb price hikes, according to local sources. In the beginning of this week, the NFA hinted at a possible price hike of P2 per kilogram (around $45 per ton) in the lean season (July - September), but ensured that prices would stabilize once supplies from the 800,000 imports as well as harvest for the ongoing crop begins in September. However, some farmer groups opposed price hikes saying some cartels were involved in price manipulation and price hikes were not temporary. Yesterday, the NPCC convened a meeting to discuss the food-supply situation in the country as well as suggest measures to ensure adequate rice supplies and prevent spikes in retail rice prices. The Department of Trade and Industry (DIT) has been entrusted with monitoring basic food prices, including rice. and strictly enforcing antiprofiteering measures on retail outlets resorting to hoarding and other malpractices affecting supplies and thereby prices. The DIT Director suggested that the NFA could adopt a direct-selling approach to ensure lowerpriced NFA rice to low-income families. Under this approach the NFA would directly sell to the government agencies and big companies, which would in turn sell to their employees for the next two to three months. Currently, the NFA well-milled rice is offered at P32 per kilogram (around $727 per ton) while the market price of the same rice is P42 per kilogram ($954 per ton). The Trade Secretary assured that total rice stocks with the NFA and commercial dealers is sufficient for 73
