NEWS DETAILS: Scientists speak out against GM rice trial vandalism Tom Nightingale reported this story on Friday, September 20, 2013 08:20:00

PALMER: Some of the world's top scientists are speaking out against the vandalism of a trial of genetically modified (GM) rice in the Philippines six weeks ago. The rice was being developed to combat vitamin A deficiency, which is responsible for up to three million deaths a year in Africa and South East Asia. After anti GM activists destroyed the crop, a former chief scientist of Australia has fired back at the opponents of GM crops as unscientific, comparing them to anti vaccination campaigners.Tom Nightingale reports. TOM NIGHTINGALE: Almost half the world relies on rice as a staple food. But the absence of vitamin A in white rice leads to blindness in children and pregnant women.Jim Peacock is with the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and is formerly a chief scientist of Australia. JIM PEACOCK: I'm talking about approximately a million children a year going blind and many of them, most of them dying at an early age. TOM NIGHTINGALE: Vitamin A deficiency also hits the body's immune system, so other illnesses become worse. The figures are hard to pin down but the death toll could be nearly three million a year. JIM PEACOCK: This is a public health tragedy that we must recognise and appreciate that it can be removed.TOM NIGHTINGALE: Scientists in the Philippines are trialling genetically modified rice known as

golden rice for its distinctive yellow colour. For years it's been tipped as a potential solution to global vitamin A deficiency. But six weeks ago about 400 or so people trampled the crop so that neighbouring properties wouldn't be contaminated.Jim Peacock sees parallels with the debate about immunising children against diseases.JIM PEACOCK: I mean it's so easy for the anti-science people, the anti-GM people like Greenpeace, to make statements against the GM in a very general and very often completely inaccurate and a level of misinformation. TOM NIGHTINGALE: Thousands of researchers have signed a statement against the destruction. And 11 scientists, including Jim Peacock, are authors of an editorial published today in the journal, Science. The ABC spoke to Daniel Ocampo who's a Greenpeace campaigner in Manila.DANIEL OCAMPO: It is actually incorrect for the scientist to assume that golden rice will be a solution to vitamin A deficiency.TOM NIGHTINGALE: Greenpeace and others don't believe that genetically modified, or golden rice, is a solution to vitamin A deficiency. DANIEL OCAMPO: What's being done in the Philippines is dramatically reduce vitamin A deficiencies in last 10 years and these solutions are already there and they're working. And the funding that is actually being wasted on golden rice should instead be diverted into these working solutions already.TIM PALMER: Daniel Ocampo, a Greenpeace sustainable agriculture campaigner in the Philippines, speaking with Tom Nightingale.

Tufts University apologized for the pilot of “golden rice” 《DailyEconomic》 2013-09-20 10:57:52 Source:

In Tufts University, deputy director of Public Relations Jenniferr Critz in Beijing on the 18th sent a letter to Xinhua News Agency reporter to apologize that the school researchers Tang Guangwen and others took Chinese children as the object of genetically modified ‗golden rice‘ in human trials, which has violated established protocols and standards‘, and said it will prevent similar incidents in the letter. In August of 2012, Tang Guangwen and others published the research papers related to ‗golden rice‘ on the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The researchers used genetically modified rice to conduct human trials on 6-8 year-old Chinese children, which caused public concern. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and other agencies released announcement soon, informed that the test has violated relevant provisions of GM, research ethics and scientific integrity. The related responsible people

in Chinese side were dismissed. The study of Tufts University shows that although the study data of ‗golden rice‘ has passed validation, no health and safety risks have been founded, however, the study itself does not fully comply with the requirements of the school ethics review committee and the federal regulations of U.S.The research said, there is no sufficient evidence to prove that the study has obtained the evaluation and approval from Chinese related authorities, and some flaws existed in the process of obtaining informed consent, including the lack of clear explanation to the genetically modified properties of ―Golden rice‖. The responsible person of research project has changed the study process without obtaining the approval from the Tufts Ethics Review Committee.Tufts University apologized for the behavior which caused a breach of established protocols and standards and said it has strengthened the management regulations and procedures to prevent similar problems from happening again, meanwhile the university also will strengthen the school's supervision to ensure that the school adhere to the highest scientific standards.Based on these findings, the school has taken corrective and preventive measures. Tang Guangwen who presided over this research project shall not engage in human studies within two years, and he needs to re-accept trainings about rules and regulations related to human research at this time. After this two years, Tang Guangwen can only conduct human studies as the identity of co-investigator under the direct supervision by research responsible person. In addition, the school also modified the regulatory procedures, and Tufts Ethics Review Committee will conduct a more detailed review to the studies that implemented outside the United States or in the context of crosscultural

Glossary: 'Golden Rice' is genetically modified rice, unlike ordinary rice, its main function is to help the body increase the absorption of vitamin A. It is called ―golden rice‖ because of its yellow color. Skeptics believe that golden rice may be a serious threat to the environment and food security, it can not solve the fundamental causes of vitamin A deficiency, that are, poverty and lack of diversification of the diet. Oryza Overnight Recap – Chicago Rough Rice Futures Higher Overnight on Follow-through Buying, After Making Technical Advance Yesterday Sep 19, 2013

Chicago rough rice futures for November delivery were paused 7.5 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $15.685 per cwt (about $346 per ton) as of 8:30am Chicago time. The other grains are seen higher during this morning break ahead of floor trading in Chicago: soybeans are currently seen trading about 0.8% higher, wheat is seen trading about 1.4% higher, and corn is seen trading about 0.9% higher.U.S. stock index futures were higher Thursday, following on from the previous day's bounce when the Federal Reserve surprised markets by opting to maintain its $85 billion-per-month asset purchases. On the economic front, the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose 15,000 to a seasonally adjusted 309,000, according to the Labor Department. But analysts said the reading was distorted as two states were still working through a backlog of unprocessed claims from last week. On Wednesday, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank was not ready to cut back on stimulus measures, citing tightening financial conditions that could hurt employment. The decision surprised Wall Street analysts who had expected a $10 billion to $15 billion reduction in the central bank's $85 billion-a-month bond purchases. Asian and European equity markets enjoyed a risk-on rally on Thursday on the news. Emerging markets led the gains, as investors searched for higher-yielding assets, on the expectation that the Fed's continued liquidity boost would benefit these countries. U.S. stock futures are currently trading about 0.2% higher, gold is currently trading about 4.7% higher, crude oil is seen trading about 0.2% higher, and the U.S. dollar is currently trading marginally lower at 8:30am Chicago time. Oryza Afternoon Recap – Chicago Rough Rice Futures Find Follow-through Buying Interest After Yesterday’s Positive Technical Development Sep 19, 2013

Chicago rough rice futures for November delivery settled 7 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $15.680 per cwt (about $346 per ton). Despite spending the majority of the session in the red, rough rice futures managed a late session recovery and settled within a couple cents of the session high of $15.700 per cwt (about $346 per ton). Today‘s buying interest was likely triggered by yesterday‘s move into technically positive territory as prices broke through a key point of resistance. Gains were limited by softening outside markets as the soy complex gave back a portion of yesterday‘s gains and the dollar strengthened as traders digested the true meaning of yesterday‘s FOMC announcement. The other grains were mixed today; soybeans finished the day about 0.6% lower at $13.3950 per bushel; wheat finished about 1.6% higher at $6.5700 per bushel; and corn finished the day about 0.7% higher at $4.5950 per bushel.U.S. stocks drifted lower Thursday, dragged by consumer staples, as investors largely shrugged off a batch of upbeat economic reports and yesterday's news whereby the Federal Reserve surprised markets by opting to maintain its $85 billion-per-month asset purchases. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped into the red. The blue-chip index has been trading in a narrow 58-point range. The S&P 500 set an intraday high shortly after the market open before retreating. And the Nasdaq briefly hit a new 13-year high before turning flat. Among key S&P sectors, consumer staples led the decliners. U.S. stock markets are currently trading down about 0.3%, gold is trading about 4.6% higher, crude oil is seen about 1% lower, and the U.S. dollar is seen about 0.2% higher at about 2:00pm Chicago time.Looking to the daily continuation chart of Chicago rough rice futures for November delivery, the market managed to make good on yesterday‘s positive forecast as prices rallied off of session lows to closed higher on the day. Today‘s action has confirmed the buying signal as prices managed to break through resistance noted yesterday at $15.595 per cwt (about $344 per ton), although it did spend the majority of the day below this level. Prices now face firm nearby resistance at $15.700 per cwt (about $346 per ton), a level which the market was unable to break through today and has been noted as a near-term high since being put in place on September 12. A move above this level would be seen as a positive development as prices would have broken out of the current sideways trading range. This level will be closely watched tomorrow and could likely trigger additional

buying interest if fails to provide resistance. Today‘s trading range is noted as $15.465-$15.700 per cwt (about $341-$346 per ton).Wednesday, there were 270 contracts traded, up from 242 contracts traded on Tuesday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Wednesday decreased by 568 contracts to 9,053. Tags: chicago rough rice futures
