Wet, Stormy Weather Concerns Italy's Rice Farmers Aug 20, 2014

An old adage goes “climate is what we expect, weather is what we get” – and the weather rice farmers are currently getting in Po Valley, Italy, is certainly not what they were expecting. In the Po Valley, summer has brought difficult weather conditions, constant rains, and temperatures below the average seasonal level. For an area that boasts 90% of Italy‟s domestic rice growing area, this is a real problem. Farmers have had to battle nearly continuous storms and even tornadoes. The Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) in July evaluated the Novara province in Piedmont and showed a degree of +4 (really damp), with Vercelli showing normal conditions. In Lombardy, during the week July 28-August 3, the water inflow in Sesia, Agogna, and Terdoppio Rivers reached 172.2 million cubic meters, while the Ticino River area reached 133.2 million cubic meters. In July, Milan had 16 rainy days whereas the 23-year-average is only 5.3 days. So far, 184 millimeters of rain have accumulated, while the 23-year-average is only 73 millimeters (according to data supplied by ARPA Lombardia, the Regional Environmental Agency).Farmers won‟t know how badly their rice fields are affected until harvest, but farmers‟ trade unions have already pointed out the potential risk of rice not heading properly if temperatures remain too low.Now if only they could send some of that rain to California, where the drought is still in full effect… Tags: weather, climate, Drought, rain

California Livestock Producers Overcome Droughttriggered Feed Shortages with Rice Straw Aug 20, 2014

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874

California livestock producers, who are facing feed shortages due to drought, are making utmost use of abundant rice straw lying around after harvest by converting it into cattle feed, according to local sources. Researchers at the University of California (UC) Cooperative Extension have been working towards converting rice straw into 'strawlage', a protein feed that has slightly higher level of moisture, which is almost equal to a low quality hay and is relatively cheaper than the traditional hay used by livestock producers. Currently, 'strawlage' with about 45-65% moisture content is available for around $40 per ton compared to hay with 10% moisture content available at around $200 per ton. Due to prevailing drought conditions, many producers are preferring „strawlageâ€&#x; despite higher moisture content. According to UC Cooperative Extension livestock and natural resources advisor, producers have found some disadvantages such as mould formation and eventual nutritional loss with 'strawlage'. He noted that the researchers are in the process of finding solutions to these problems and are collaborating with researchers in Australia and Portugal. Once solutions are identified, 'strawlage' could be very useful as cattle feed, he added. Also due to high moisture content, producers may find it difficult to transport 'strawlage' to distant places. The UC advisor says it can be more useful to livestock producers in the vicinity of rice fields. Tags: U.S. rice production, california drought, Cattle feed, rice straw

Coming Soon: Rice Blast-Resistant Variety That Can Adapt to Australian Farms Aug 20, 2014

Four years ago, rice blast disease struck the rice farms in Ord River Irrigation Area of Western Australia and the impact was staggering. Researcher Vincent Lanoiselet from the department of Agriculture and Food is now working towards developing a rice blast screening program and rice blast-resistant variety that can adapt to Australian conditions.Lead researcher Vincent Lanoiselet along with Dr Xiangling Fang and other scientists from the Department of Agriculture and Food, University of Western Australia and the NSW Department of Primary Industries presented these results at a rice research workshop at New South Wales recently.

The team is working on 25 rice germplasms (genetic resources for an organism) with single blast-resistance genes. They had identified a high level of genetic diversity and five strains of disease among rice blast isolates in northern Australia.Of the 25 genes roped in from the Temperate Rice Research Consortium and the International Rice Research Institute, 24 were released from the departmentâ€&#x;s Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) in South Perth in April and May 2014. Meanwhile gene Pi40 which has displayed broad-spectrum blast resistance has also been released from PEQ and is being multiplied in Western Australia. How Phosphate-Starvation Can Affect the Fate of Your Rice Plant Aug 20, 2014

Call it a Domino effect, but Phosphate - or the lack of it - in soil can actually affect the price of rice! While phosphorous itself is available in plenty in the soil, Phosphate (the inorganic form of Phosphorous) and the main source for plants is scarce because of its low soil solubility in soil and high adsorption capacity. Due to this, plants cannot optimize Phosphate's presence. This leads to Phosphate-starvation especially in areas such as south-western Australia. Phosphate starvation translates into reduced growth and thus reduced yield.Researchers at University of Western Australia and La Trobe studied Phosphate homeostatis to conclude more such interesting facts. They examined rice roots and shoots within one hour to a few days after Phosphate removal and again its effect up to three weeks of Phosphate starvation. This enabled them to understand the importance of each gene at each time and the response to phosphate starvation in a tissue-specific manner. They also went ahead to study what happens when Phosphate is resupplied to treat Phosphate starvation, a subject that hasn't been explored vastly by previous researchers. The team measured the response of rice to phosphate re-supply within one hour, six hours and 24 hours to study the early dynamics involved here. They succeeded in finding genes responding to phosphate starvation and/or resupply. This could lead to better information to help rice plants that suffer Phosphate starvation to give better yields. Indian State Goa Seeks $24 Million Central Government Assistance to Boost Rice Production Aug 20, 2014

The Indian state Goa is seeking central government assistance to increase rice production in the state through introduction of latest technologies, according to local sources.Local sources quoted the Goa Chief Minister has saying that the state government has sought Rs.150 crore (around $24.7 million) assistance from the central government as a grant under the 'Rajiv Krishi Vikas Yojana' scheme. He noted that rice farmers in the state should be given technological help to increase yields adding that his government is keen on enhancing paddy yields to 6 tons per hectare from the current 3.9 tons per hectare. The Chief Minister also stated that many rice farmers are abandoning paddy fields and are shifting to other horticulture crops because of lucrative returns from them. He therefore urged the central government to support farmers to ensure that they continue rice farming.Goa contributes to a very little percentage of overall paddy rice production in India. In 2011-12, a total of 47,237 hectares of land was allotted to paddy and the total paddy production during the year stood at around 182,945 tons (with kharif crop accounting for around 118,145 tons and rabi crop accounting for around 64,800 tons), according to the data from Ministry of Agriculture, Goa. Paddy rice production in the state increased by about 6% in 2011-12 from around 172,489 tons produced in 2010-11. Mostly saline-tolerant rice varieties such as Korgut, Assgo and Muno as well as hybrid rice varieties are grown in Goa. Tags: India rice production, Goa rice production, Goa rice acreage
