70,000 tons are branded.Situation is worse in the case of non-basmati rice exports. Hardly any brands exist in this segment. Talking about the importance of branding, a basmati rice exporter told local sources that till recently, Pakistan exported most of its rice, including basmati and non-basmati, without proper processing, packaging and branding. He noted that leading basmati rice brands are getting nearly $500 per ton higher than unbranded varieties.
Experts say that rice processing and exports are still in the hands of small and medium players who lack professionalism. This is the main reason why Pakistan exporters are not realizing the importance of branding and marketing, they add. Head of one of the leading basmati brands told local sources that brand-building also requires huge investment for market research, promotion and marketing as well as subsistence, and Pakistan exporters lack both these elements.Pakistan exported around 3.16 million tons of rice in the fiscal year 2013-14 (July 2013 - June 2014), down about 7% from around 3.4 million tons of rice exported in FY 2012-13. Sri Lanka Plans to Import 100,000 Tons of Rice in 2014 as Production May Decline 17% to 3.32 Million Tons
Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874
Aug 25, 2014 Sri Lankan authorities are planning to import around 100,000 tons of rice in 2014 as they are expecting the country's paddy production to decline about 17% to around 3.32 million tons (around 2.26 million tons, basis milled) from around 4 million tons (around 2.72 million tons, basis milled) produced in 2013, reports the UN's Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN).The country's Finance Secretary told media sources that Sri Lanka is likely to record lowest production in the last six years due to an acute dry spell that has hit many rice growing areas in the North, North Central and Eastern Provinces, adding that rice imports will continue until the harvest picks up.According to the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research Institute (HKARI) in Colombo, the south west monsoon, which brings maximum rainfall to the country between May and September, has been below average and has impacted rice planting process severely. Planting for 2014 Yala rice crop (April-September) is about 42% below over last year. Planting for the Maha main rice crop (September - April) will begin next month.
Planting in areas relying on irrigation are also suffering due to depleting water reserves. The Director of the HKARI says traditional rice farming methods used by the Sri Lankan farmers also require huge quantities of water. She noted that they are working towards devising newer farming methods based on scientific research as well as developing droughtresistant rice varieties. The UN's Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) has estimated Sri Lanka's paddy rice production to decline to around 3.9 million tons (around 2.65 million tons, basis milled) in 2014, down about 16% from around 4.62 million tons (around 3.14 million tons , basis milled) produced in 2013.USDA estimates Sri Lanka to produce around 2.8 million tons of rice, basis milled (around 4.1 million tons, basis paddy) and import around 20,000 tons in MY 2014-15 (October 2014 - September 2015). Sri Lanka’s consumption needs are estimated at around 2.9 million tons of milled rice per year. Tags: Sri Lanka rice production, Sri Lanka rice imports, Drought-tolerant rice varieties
Bangladesh Collaborates with China to Boost Hybrid Rice Production Aug 25, 2014

The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) and Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) have collaborated with China's Sichuan Nongda High-tech Agriculture Co Ltd to develop and promote hybrid rice varieties in the country under the Hybrid Rice Cooperation Project, according to local sources.According to sources at the Agriculture Ministry, the collaboration aims to get technological and financial support from China to boost rice production in the country as well as ensure food security. While the BRRI is responsible for research and development, BADC will oversee seed production, processing as well as marketing under the project.China has agreed to provide a total Tk80 crore (around $10.3 million) funding towards setting up a Joint Research Center (JRC) under the project, according to local sources. Initially, it will provide around Tk 30 crore (around $3.87 million) and release the remaining funds in a phased manner. The JRC will be responsible to develop hybrid seeds specific for all the three rice producing seasons - Aus, Aman and Boro. Currently, only 10-12% of Bangladesh production of around 34 million tons is based on hybrid seeds, according to the Director General of the Seed Wing of the Agriculture Ministry. Very few of the 62 rice varieties developed by the BRRI are also popular among farmers because of poor marketing, and farmers who use hybrid seeds are importing seeds from China through some private seed companies, he said. The DG of Seed Wing also noted that the government is keen on increasing hybrid seed production in the coming years to address the shrinking rice acreage.Bangladesh has produced around 34.449 million tons of rice, basis milled, in FY 2013-14 (July - June), up about 2.7% from around 33.833 million tons produced in FY 2012-13, according to provisional official estimates from the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).USDA estimates Bangladesh to produce around 34.8 million tons of rice in MY 2014-15 (May - April), up about 1% from an estimated 34.59 million tons in MY 2013-14. It estimates Bangladesh to import around 100,000 tons of rice in 2015, down about 75% from an estimated 400,000 tons in 2014. The country's rice consumption needs are estimated at around 34.8 million tons in MY 2014-15 slightly up from an estimated 34.6 million tons in MY 2013-14. Mozambique Targets 80% Self-Sufficiency in Rice by 2020 Aug 25, 2014

The Mozambican government is targeting to achieve 80% selfsufficiency in rice production by 2020, according to local sources. The National Director of Agricultural Services told local reporters that the government is keen on reducing the proportionately high import bill (of around $140 million) on rice. He noted that the country's production is plagued by poor access to modern agricultural inputs, traditional and old farming techniques, inefficient water management, and obsolescent irrigation infrastructures, while adding that nearly 670,000 hectares of cultivable land is unused.Use of appropriate technology, including high quality seeds and other inputs, and by improving harvest and postharvest operations, the country can increase rice production significantly, he said. Farmers can be benefited by the Intensive Technology Transfer Program, he adds. The ongoing development of Chokwe irrigation system in the southern province of Gaza and the Maganja da Costa irrigation system in the central province of Zambezia are going to provide the necessary impetus to the country's rice sector, he noted.Mozambique is a net importer of rice and imports around 70% rice needed yearly to compensate for lags in production as well as to meet the consumption needs. USDA estimates Mozambique to produced around 228,000 tons and import around 520,000 tons of rice in MY 2014-15 to meet a consumption of around 748,000 tons.
