Philippines Rejects Bids in 500,000 Ton Rice Tender due to High Prices Aug 27, 2014

The National Food Authority (NFA) of the Philippines has rejected bids for 500,000 tons of 25% broken white rice in today's tender due to high prices, according to Reuters. The government allocated around 10.27 billion pesos (around $234.5 million) towards the rice importation. Reuters reports that the NFA received bids between $460 to $496.75 per ton, while it set an undisclosed threshold of $456.6 per ton. "Based on the non-responsive bids, we can declare a failure of bidding," the head of the NFA bidding panel was quoted as saying to the group of four rice traders who participated in the bidding. The NFA spokesperson was quoted as saying that the agency would hold another tender following today's rejection of bids. The imports, which are slated to arrive between September and November, are expected to strengthen state stockpiles and curtail local retail rice pricehikes in the country. The country is likely to miss its production target of around 19.07 million tons this year by 2%, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). With possible crop losses over the next four months, the government has authorized the NFA to import another 500,000 tons of rice in addition to already imported 800,000 tons and today's tender for 500,000 tons. Therefore, the Philippines is expected to import over 2 million tons of rice this year at zero-percent duty. Additionally, the private sector can import around 350,000 tons at 40% duty under WTO quota.USDA estimates the Philippines will import around 1.45 million tons of rice in 2014, including around 250,000 tons of unofficial rice imports, and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the country to import around 1.2 million tons of rice in 2014. Rice Bucket Challenge Goes Global Aug 27, 2014

The rice bucket challenge (#ricebucketchallenge) encourages everyone to help those in need with a bucket of rice. The idea originated with Oryza's own Manju Latha Kalanidhi of Hyderabad, India. Media calls the rice bucket challenge, “India’s spin on the ice bucket challenge,” while Manju has most recently also partnered with www.Ravishly.com, a women’s news and entertainment site, that is working with Manju and Oryza to take the initiative global. Rice is a particularly excellent food item to share with those in need because it is easy to transport and store, but the spirit of the rice bucket challenge extends beyond rice, as Ravishly mentions: To expand upon this initiative, we're asking our own team, and their friends, and as many other people as possible through the power of Internet osmosis, to help fight hunger by doing two simple things:
