Experts are fearing that global warming and climate change could reduce Bangladesh's paddy yields by about 50% in 2070, according to local sources.Speaking at the national workshop on "Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Rice Field: Finding Mitigation Options from Fertilizer Deep Placement and Alternative Wetting and Drying", the Director General(DG) of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) noted that the country's per hectare yield, which was around 5.5 tons, is likely to be

reduced to around 2 tons per hectare by 2017 due to global warming and climate changes. He added that experts are witnessing quick changes in the country's rice ecosystems due to climate changes. Climate change factors such as salinity, flash floods, drought, cold waves, excessive heat, stagnant floods and tidal floods have been severely impacting rice production in the country, the BRRI DG noted. He further added that Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries of global warming and climate change.He noted that the BRRI has been working closely with the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) under the Accelerating Agriculture Productivity Improvement (AAPI) project to reduce carbon emissions from rice fields as well as developing newer climate change, drought and salinity-tolerant rice varieties. According to USDA, Bangladesh currently produces around 4.4 tons of paddy per hectare. USDA estimates Bangladesh to produce around 34.8 million tons of rice in MY 2014-15 (May - April), up about 1% from an estimated 34.59 million tons in MY 2013-14. It estimates Bangladesh to import around 100,000 tons of rice in 2015, down about 75% from an estimated 400,000 tons in 2014. Chicago rough rice futures for Sep delivery settled 11 cent per cwt (about $2 per ton) lower at $12.685 per cwt (about $280 per ton). The other grains finished the day higher; soybeans closed about 0.5% higher at $10.2875 per bushel; wheat finished about 1.7% higher at $5.5650 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 1.2% higher at $3.6925 per bushel. U.S. stocks declined on Thursday, pulling the S&P 500 off its record above 2,000, as concerns about Ukraine overtook upbeat reports on the U.S. economy and the labor market. Ahead of the open, stock-index futures briefly cut their losses some after government data. Figures from the Commerce Department showed the economy expanded more than previously projected, with gross domestic product rising at a 4.2% annualized pace, versus an earlier estimate of 4% that follows contraction in the first quarter. Another report from the Labor Department had the government's count of Americans filing for jobless benefits dropping by 1,000 to 298,000 last week.

Myanmar Rice Farmers Fear Low Output and Incomes due to Heavy Rains Aug 28, 2014
Farmers in the Irrawaddy Delta, known as the rice bowl of Myanmar, began rice planting in August three months late from the normal planting time in May every year, according to local sources.Heavy rains and flooding since the beginning of rice growing season in May this year have disrupted rice planting in Myanmar. Farmers have been waiting for flood water to recede from fields. Now they say they are working day in and day out to ensure reasonable output this year. However, most of them are fearing delayed and low outputs accordingly. They say they have to adjust with minimal incomes this year. Myanmar government is keen on regaining its once top rice exporter status and is accordingly planning to increase its rice exports to about 3 million tons over the next five years, up almost three times the current exports of around one million tons. In this backdrop, a decline in production may be a discouraging factor to the country's rice sector.Meanwhile, Chinese authorities are visiting Myanmar to discuss on cross-border trade and finalize a framework highlighting aspects for legalizing rice exports to China. After the negotiations, they will first sign an agreement on quality inspection and then finalize a rice export agreement between the two countries. China is an important destination to Myanmar but most of the rice is exported through its northern borders, which the Chinese authorities claim as illegal. In 2013, Myanmar exported around 747,000 tons of rice to China through its northern borders and says exports are legal. Myanmar's total rice exports are likely to reach around 1.1 million tons in FY 2013-14, down 47% from 2.1 million tons exported in FY 2012-13 fiscal, according to the Minister of Commerce.

USDA estimates Myanmar's rice exports in 2014 to grow to around 1.3 million tons, up about 12% from the previous year's level of around 1.16 tons. The country's milled rice production is estimated at 11.96 million tons in MY 2013-14 (January 2014 - December 2014) against a consumption of around 10.5 million tons. The U.S. cash market saw prices hold today despite the fact the US sold another vessel to Venezuela which some analysts believed could have been the spark to reignite higher prices.As of today, offers were unchanged around $13.00-$13.33 per cwt fob farm (about $287-$294 per ton) while bids have not budged from around $12.85-$13.25 per cwt (about $282-$292 per ton) for September-October delivery.In the meantime, today the USDA reported that cumulative net export sales for the week ending on August 21st, totaled 58,700 tons with increases reported for the following destinations including: 30,000 tons to Venezuela, 14,300 tons to Mexico, 4,200 tons to Saudi Arabia, 2,800 tons to El Salvador, and 2,500 tons to Jordan. U.S. rice exporters shipped 18,500 tons with the primary destinations including: 7,000 tons to Haiti, 3,900 tons to Mexico, 2,400 tons to Jordan, 2,000 tons to Canada, and 900 tons to Saudi Arabia. Italian Arborio and Domestic Rice Sales Surpass Availability; Almost 96% of Italian Paddy Sold Aug 28, 2014
With less than a month left before the next harvest, there are 69,856 tons of paddy rice still available on the Italian market. About 1,387,171 tons have been sold from the 1,447,783 tons first available in September 2013; in other words, about 95.81% of the original crop was sold by August 19. Specifically, Arborio-Volano’s beginning availability was fixed at 78,899 tons, but at least 84,580 tons have already been sold. This is happening with domestic varieties, too: beginning availability was 281,933 tons, and sales now amount to 287,171 tons (101.9%), while export varieties have been sold at 97.8%. Heavy rain is expected in south-western Guangdong, central-southern Guangxi, Hainan, southern Sichuan, north-eastern Chongqing, western Hubei, central Hebei and western Beijing in China from August 28-30. Abundant rain is expected over Thailand during the next two days, fading to scattered rains. Rain showers in Thailand maintain favorable moisture conditions for rice in the north and northeast, while improving seasonal moisture conditions in the Central Plain Region; more rainfall would be welcomed in this region to alleviate seasonal deficits and ensure good moisture reserves for the upcoming dry-season rice crop. Rain showers are expected across northern Vietnam on Thursday and Friday. Light rain is expected across southern Vietnam on today and tomorrow. Rainfall for the month of August remained unseasonably low, benefiting summer rice harvesting in the south but increasing irrigation demands for winter rice transplanting in both the north and south. Heavy rain is expected at few places in India such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra during the next two days. Thereafter, rain showers are expected over most parts of the country from August 31September 3. Hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of Pakistan today and tomorrow. However, isolated thundershowers are expected across Hazara, Rawalpindi, Mirpurkhas, Zhob, Kalat divisions, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday and Friday. Light rain is expected at most places over Dhaka, Rangpur, Chittagong & Sylhet divisions in Bangladesh on Thursday and Friday. In Indonesia, rain showers are expected from northern Borneo to northern Sumatra on Thursday and Friday. By August 24, 94% of the U.S. rice crop was at the heading stage, 4% ahead of the same time last year. Producers had harvested 11% of the nation’s rice crop by August 24, according to the USDA. In Arkansas, rice producers continued to gradually terminate irrigation and started to drain fields in preparation for harvest. Overall, 74% of the rice crop was reported in good to excellent condition.

India Average Wholesale Rice Prices Increase Slightly in August 2014 Aug 28, 2014
India average wholesale rice prices increased slightly in August 2014 after they increased sharply in July 2014, according to official sources. The correction has been mainly due to subdued fears on rice production from the kharif (June - December) main rice crop with monsoons resuming in many parts of India. Average monthly wholesale rice prices in India increased to around Rs.3,233 per quintal in August 2014, slightly up from around Rs.3,217 per quintal in July 2014, and up about 21% from around Rs.2,675 per quintal in August 2013.In terms of USD per ton, wholesale rice prices in India stand at around $539 per ton (using current exchange rates) in August 2014, slightly up from around $536 per ton (using historical exchange rates) in July 2014, and up about 39% from around $389 per ton (using historical exchange rates) in August 2013. The average wholesale rice price in January - August 2014 stands at around Rs.2,941 per quintal, up about 11% from around Rs.2,647 per quintal during the same period in 2013.

Thai Rice Export Sector Feels Heat of Labor Shortages Aug 28, 2014
Nearly 200,000 migrant workers at ports have left Thailand fearing military crackdown after the military government took over on May 22, 2014. The Thai rice export sector is feeling the heat of this development. Around 500,000 tons of Thai rice shipments, mostly to African destinations, are being delayed due to labor shortages at ports, according to local sources. Due to labor shortages at ports, loading is taking two-three weeks longer than normal time and most of the June shipments have been pushed off to August and some of them have been postponed to September, according to Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA). Private trade sources say currently only 500 tons of rice is being loaded per day compared with normal pace of 2,000 - 3,000 tons a day. If this situation continues, Thai government's plan to offload maximum quantity of rice stocks accumulated from the previous government's rice pledging scheme may be disrupted, say local sources. The military government is planning to export over 9 million tons of rice this year. It exported around 4.7 million tons of rice in the first six months of 2014. However, exports in second half are likely to be impacted due to labor shortages. The military government, which halted the rice sales to carry out nationwide stock inspections have resumed sales and have auctioned off around 73,000 tons of rice in the first auction on August 8, 2014. According to data from the Department of Employment, Thailand has nearly 2.23 million migrant workers, including 1.82 million people who entered the country illegally. USDA Post Estimates EU Milled Rice Imports to Decline and Exports to Increase in 2014
The Post estimates EU's 2014 milled rice imports at around 1.5 million tons, down about 9% from around 1.37 million tons imported in 2013. It expects EU imports to decline about 7% to around 1.4 million tons in 2015.The Post estimates EU's 2014 milled rice exports at around 300,000 tons, up about 48% from around 203,000 tons exported in 2013. It expects EU exports to decline about 33% to around 200,000 tons in 2015. USDA Post has estimated the European Union (EU) milled rice production in MY 2013-14 (September August) to decline to around 1.94 million tons, down about 7% from around 2 million tons produced in MY 2012-13. It estimates the EU milled rice production in MY 2014-15 to increase by about 1.5% to around 1.97 million tons.Harvesting for most of the crops, including rice is almost complete. Though the planting period started with much optimism in the spring, persistent wet weather in most parts of the continent has been delaying harvests and is causing concern on quantity and quality of rice produced.
