Typhoon Krosa Approaches Vietnam Nov 04, 2013

Tropical storm Krosa is moving in a southwesterly direction from South China and is expected to make landfall far south of Hue, Vietnam on November 5, 2013, according to NASA.Krosa was a typhoon when it crossed South China and the Philippines in the last few days, but damage to crops is reportedly minimal. Krosa has weakened into a depression, but could cause heavy rainfall in Vietnam where rice crop harvesting is underway. The impact of Krosa will be watched closely by both rice exporters and importers. Any adverse impact on China’s rice production may alter world trade significantly because only 35-37 million tons of rice is traded annually in the world, equivalent to around 26% of China’s annual rice consumption. The Philippines is targeting self-sufficiency in rice this year, and lower production in Vietnam may push global rice prices higher, local sources say. Tags: Vietnam rice production

Sri Lanka Looks to Export 200,000 Tons of Surplus Rice Nov 04, 2013

After achieving self-sufficiency in rice last year, Sri Lanka is looking to export about 200,000 tons of surplus rice in the international market, according to the Chairman of the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB).The PMB chairman says that Sri Lankan farmers have increased rice acreage due to the end of the war and production has also increased due to fertilizer subsidies. However, the demand for Sri Lanka rice is low in the international market. To address this problem, the government has started a program in collaboration with several ministries, government institutions and the private sector to market Sri Lanka rice as eco-friendly rice, the PMB chairman adds. The move is expected to increase rice exports significantly in the coming years.According to the USDA Post projections made earlier this year, Sri Lanka’s rice production in MY 2013-14 (October – September) is expected to reach around 2.74 million tons against a consumption of around 2.70 million tons. The Post projects total rice stocks of around 493,000 tons in October 2013. However, exports are projected to remain at around 20,000 tons. The Post says, “Sri Lankan rice exports are limited by several factors, including a lack of grades and standards and low demand for indigenous Sri Lankan rice varieties.” Tags: Sri Lanka rice exports

Currency Swap With Iran May Boost Pakistan Rice Exports Nov 04, 2013

Pakistan rice traders hope that exports to Iran will improve with the soon to be implemented currency swap arrangement with Iran. The State Minister for Commerce & Privatization told the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) that the government is planning to sign a currency swap arrangement deal with Iran to improve rice exports which were adversely affected due to U.S. sanctions on Iran.According to local sources, the REAP chairman said that Banks in Pakistan have stopped opening letter of credits for exports to Iran, which has helped India's rice exports. Having a currency swap arrangement is a dire need to gain better access to Iran’s rice import market, he added. According to REAP, Iran imported about 43,045 tons of basmati rice from Pakistan in FY 2012-13 (July – June), down about 70% from around 139,739 tons in FY 2011-12. According to trade sources, Iran has imported around 1.268 million tons of rice during March to October 2013 valued at around $1.464 billion. Iran buys mostly fragrant basmati rice. Currently, India is the main supplier of rice for Iran.
