News Detail… Vietnam Lowers 2013 Rice Export Target Again Nov 05, 2013

The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) has once again lowered the 2013 rice export target to around 6.7 million tons, down about 11% from the original target of around 7.5 million tons, and down about 4% from the revised target of around 7 – 7.2 million tons, according to local sources. Sources say that several export contracts to China stand cancelled as Vietnamese exporters are now interested to sell rice in the domestic market due to higher prices there. Vietnam is also facing increasing competition from Thailand which is aggressively lowering prices to boost rice exports.According to the VFA, Vietnam’s rice exports in January – October 2013 stand at around 5.7 million tons, down about 12% from rice exports during the same period in 2012. Vietnam was the world’s second largest rice exporter, with about 7.7 million tons of rice exports. Tags: Vietnam 2013 rice exports

The data could indicate whether the U.S. economy is improving and investors are looking for further clues from the country's employment report as to when the U.S. Federal Reserve will begin tapering its $85-billion-amonth asset purchases, after the central bank held policy unchanged last week. The Fed's monetary committee noted last week that it had "decided to await more evidence that progress will be sustained before adjusting the pace of its purchases," a factor that could be determined by the latest jobs report. U.S. stock index futures are currently trading about 0.5% lower, gold is currently trading about 0.01% higher, crude oil is seen trading about 0.7% lower, and the U.S. dollar is currently trading about 0.2% higher at 7:30am Chicago time. Post in Manila. The slight increase production will bring rice imports down, but self-sufficiency in rice may not be possible for the Philippines this year. The Post says, “Despite DA and industry reports of expanding production, rice prices have been increasing in MY 2013/14.” Higher prices will reduce consumption slightly, but the Philippines is expected to continue rice imports this year. Turkey Rice Farmers Seek Government Intervention to Announce Support Prices Nov 05, 2013

farmers in Turkey want the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) to intervene into the market to prevent paddy rice prices from declining.According to the USDA Post in Ankara, paddy rice prices stood at around TL 1,400 1,500 per ton (about $695- $745 per ton) at the beginning of the harvest in September. However, prices soon dropped to around TL 1,200-1,300 per ton (about $595 - $645 per ton) in October. These prices are up about 40% from around TL 850 - 950 per ton (about $476 - $530 per ton) seen during the same time last year, but farmers are concerned about further decreases to around TL 1,100 per ton (about $545 per ton). The USDA Post says that rice production in MY 2013-14 (September – August) is expected to increase to around 500,000 tons, up about 3.5% from an estimated 483,000 produced in the previous year mainly due to higher yields, but rice

stocks with the TMO have also declined to around 33,498 tons of paddy rice and 6,364 tons of milled rice, down from high levels in the previous seasons. However, the Post says that it is highly unlikely that TMO will announce procurement price for paddy rice. “TMO procured a high amount of corn at high prices, which will discourage them from procuring paddy rice. Moreover, market prices at the moment are satisfactory for farmers,” the Post says. The last time TMO procured rice from farmers was in MY 2012, when TMO purchased about 41,304 tons of paddy rice from farmers.According to the Post, Turkey’s rice consumption is estimated at around 750,000 tons, and import requirements are estimated at around 330,000 tons in MY 2013-14. Today’s move also saw the market test nearby technical resistance provided by the 10-day moving average. The S&P 500 remained slightly lower and the Nasdaq gained, with consumer staples the best performing and telecommunications the worst among the S&P's 10 major industry groups. Although prices did manage to temporarily break through this level, the bulls were unable to maintain such lofty prices and by the settle they had drifted back below. Additional resistance is noted around $15.400 per cwt (about $340 per ton) provided by the 20-day moving average. This is also a key point of focus as many traders

see a crossing above of this indicator as a bullish signal and indicates that the market has moved into technically positive territory. Color Your Life! Rainbow Rice Nov 05, 2013

For a low-cost, easy, and fun activity for children, try making colored rice. This is a great project because the kids can help make it and then they can play with the finished product, too. Colored rice can be a stimulating source of entertainment perfect for sensory play. The colors are customizable, allowing children to choose their favorite colors or choose a holiday theme to mix and mingle. Young children enjoy the noise it makes when it’s poured, and focusing on individual grains helps children develop fine motor skills. Pour several pounds of the colored rice into a wagon or plastic storage bin (the ones designed to fit under the bed work well) and set the kids up with shovels, rakes, and buckets for a less messy “sandbox.” The recipe works for any quantity of rice; adjust for your needs.Put the rice in a plastic bag that seals. You will need one bag for every color or scent you want to use. Add a few drops of food coloring or liquid water colors and a tiny bit of water to each bag. You should only add enough water to help distribute the color; there should not be any visible water left once the rice has been colored. (You can use rubbing alcohol for this, too – just make sure it won’t overpower the scent if you’re using any.) Now shake the bag around to make sure each piece gets coated. You can let the rice dry in the open bags (the easier but slower method) or spread them out on baking sheets to dry (the faster but messier method). The rice will probably dry in 4-6 hours. This recipe is adaptable. In addition to food coloring and water colors, try the following twists: 

 

Add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil for an aromatherapy indulgence that helps cold congestion. You can add green food coloring to keep with the theme. Try other essential oils like peppermint (invigorating), lavender (calming), or cinnamon. Kids still get the healing effects of the oils while playing with it, and they don’t even realize it’s good for them, too. Instead of food coloring, use fluorescent or glow-in-the-dark paint and instead of water, use rubbing alcohol. The fluorescent paint will glow under black light. Go seasonal! Just add some holiday spices when you add the color. For fall, try apple pie spice scented green rice, pumpkin pie spice scented orange rice, coffee extract or cocoa powder scented brown rice, cranberry oil scented red rice, and clove spice scented yellow rice. You can use Kool-Aid packets or powdered frosting flavoring to achieve some trickier flavors. For summer, how about red or green rice with watermelon Kool-Aid, yellow rice with lemonade Kool-Aid, or pink rice with

cotton candy frosting powder? Just add the powdered flavoring when you add the color, and be prepared to use two packets of Kool-Aid if you’re coloring a large amount of rice. To make it even more educational, provide children with colored vinegar to add to the already colored rice so they can create new colors: blue vinegar added to yellow rice makes green, yellow vinegar added to red rice makes orange, and red vinegar added to blue rice makes purple, and so on. You can find other uses for the rice, too. Consider layering or mixing it in a clear vase or candleholder for a splash of color that is easily adaptable to the season and event. The scented rice also makes a great aromatherapy pouch when placed in scrap nylon or mesh material. For aching muscles, try putting the rice in a cloth pouch (you can use scrap material and hand stitch the edges) and microwaving it briefly or freezing it for a warm or cold compress. It also makes a soothing eye mask! Tags: rainbow rice, rainbows, rainbow food, colorful food
