News Detail… Oryza Overnight Recap - Chicago Rough Rice Futures Seen a Tick Lower Overnight May 06, 2014
Chicago rough rice futures for Jul delivery are currently paused 0.5 cents per cwt (about $0.11 per ton) higher overnight at $15.520 per cwt (about $342 per ton) as of 8:00am Chicago time. The other grains are seen lower this morning ahead of floor trading in Chicago: soybeans are currently seen about 1.1% lower, wheat was paused about 0.4% lower, and corn is noted about 0.9% lower. U.S. stock index futures declined slightly on Tuesday, as Wall Street considered first-quarter earnings and trade data for March. Stock futures offered muted reaction after the government reported the U.S. trade deficit for March came in at $40.38 billion, from $41.87 billion in February. Wall Street closed higher by around 0.2% on Monday, after ISM data showed service sector activity grew at the fastest pace in eight months in April. This provided a positive lead to Asian and European markets on Tuesday. However, downward pressure came in Europe from the continued violence in Ukraine. Fighting continues around the country's eastern border and this is expected to continue to drive safe-haven assets like gold higher. U.S. stock index futures are currently trading about 0.2% lower, gold is currently trading about 0.1% lower, crude oil is seen trading slightly higher, and the U.S. dollar is currently trading about 0.5% lower at 8:00am Chicago time.

Buyers Eye Cheaper New Crop Prices May 06, 2014
The U.S. cash market was lifeless today, especially for old crop rice, as those with rice left to sell continue to hold out for higher prices as stocks tighten. However, most analysts insist that demand will be limited until new crop is available as it is considerably cheaper than buying old crop.As of today, old crop offers could still be found around $15.80 per cwt fob farm (about $348 per ton) for nearby shipment however most farmers have not shown any interest in selling at those levels. Old crop bids from larger mills increased slightly today to around $15.30 per cwt (about $337 per ton) for May delivery while bids for exporters were unchanged near $15.50 per cwt (about $342 per ton), for the same delivery period, however both are not getting any traction. As for new crop, offers could be found as low as $13.66 per cwt fob farm (about $301 per ton) for September through October delivery while bids were seen closer to $13.25 per cwt fob farm (about $292 per ton) depending on the location of the rice and how quickly the seller could ship. Locals Worry Food Expo in Milan Neglects Italy's Own Rice Industry May 06, 2014
With just a little less than a year before the grand opening of Expo 2015 in Milan, the much anticipated event is causing quite a buzz. Dating back to 1851 this universal exposition serves to showcase some of man’s greatest achievements over the course of time. Structured around a theme chosen by the host country, the focus of this year’s expo is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. A motif chosen to highlight the importance of food both culturally and globally and man’s underlying contribution to it. For the first time in the event’s history, pavilion communities will be organized in clusters unified by a common food rather than by geographical area. This kind of organization will cater to the theme’s effort to provide more education on nutrition. As one of the most significant foods in the international market, rice will also have a place in the expo next year; the countries included in its cluster will be: Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. Cambodia and Myanmar both enjoy duty-free rice import status with the EU, making them competitors to Italy, the continent's largest rice producer. However, the exclusion of Italy from the rice cluster has warranted discussions within Italy’s agricultural sector. Holding the title for the largest producer of rice in the European Union (EU), the country fears that visitors of the expo will leave unaware of Milan’s contribution to Europe’s rice cultivating area due to its lack of placement in the event. Another objection stems from the inclusion of countries in the cluster that have

increased their imports into the EU by enough to begin driving out business from local, Italian farmers. The validity of this objection stems from Italy being the host of the event. Crimea Looses Entire Rice Crop from Water Shortage May 06, 2014
Crimea, which usually produces 85,000-120,000 tons of rice, has lost the entire crop on account of water shortages, according to Russian media. Neighboring Krasnodar Territory produces about one million tons annually and thus should be able to supply Crimea with rice, according to the report. Tags: Crimea rice production, water shortage

Oryza Afternoon Recap - Chicago Rough Rice Futures Continue to Edge Higher as Suppliers' Price Ideas Remain Lofty May 06, 2014
Chicago rough rice futures for Jul delivery settled 4 cents per cwt (about $1 per ton) higher at $15.555 per cwt (about $343 per ton). Rough rice futures closed higher once again today as traders acted on bullish signals triggered yesterday with the markets confirmation of underlying support noted in the $15.470 to $15.500 per cwt (about $341 to $342 per ton) area. Today’s follow-through buying was enough to push prices within 0.5 cents per cwt (about $0.11 per ton) of nearby resistance at $15.600 per cwt (about $344 per ton), which is noted as the upper boundary of a multi-week sideways trading range. Market participants will keep a keen eye on this level and it will likely limit the market's upward potential barring any surprising fundamental news. A failure at this level again tomorrow will provide further confirmation of the current trading range and could be the catalyst for a pull-back in coming sessions. The other grains finished the day mixed as soy remains under pressure while corn and wheat continue to surge; soybeans closed about 0.3% lower at $14.5950 per bushel; wheat finished about 1.4% higher at $7.3900 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 1.9% higher at $5.1750 per bushel.
