Two companies looking at purchasing Isaacson Steel BY BARBARA TETREAULT THE BERLIN DAILY SUN

BERLIN – Two companies are interested in purchasing the assets of the Isaacson Steel companies, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June. Isaacson President Arnie Hanson said the companies are looking at both the warehouse operation (Isaacson Steel) and the fabrication shop (Isaacson Structural Steel). He said the companies are looking at running the businesses in Berlin and retaining a

large majority of existing employees. “Right now it looks good,” said Hanson, in an e-mail correspondence. “While the companies are not Berlin companies, both are interested in leaving the businesses in Berlin to operate as they have in the past.” Hanson did not release the names of the interested parties but said he hopes to have an agreement filed with the bankruptcy court by the end of the year. Hanson confirmed that Isaacson Chief Financial Officer Steve Griffin resigned from the Isaacson

companies last Friday but had no comment on the resignation. Hanson said he does not expect to be involved with the companies if they are sold. He said his sole focus right now is to save as many of the 140 jobs as possible. “Our employees are the best I’ve had the privilege to work with and they deserve to keep their jobs,” he said. Isaacson Structural Steel is currently involved in construction of the 26-story Liberty Mutual buildsee ISAACSON page 22

Team honored for work prosecuting Mehdi Gabayzadeh BY BARBARA TETREAULT THE BERLIN DAILY SUN

BERLIN-GORHAM – The team that investigated and successfully prosecuted American Tissue CEO Mehdi Gabayzadeh has been recognized by the U.S. Attorney General for its work on the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney General James Miskiewicz and FBI Special Agents Charles Butruch and

Angela Jett were among 163 members of the Department of Justice honored at an awards ceremony held this month in Washington, D.C. by Attorney General Eric Holder and Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys Director H. Marshall Jarrett. Miskiewicz, Butruch, and Jett received the director’s award “for superior performance by a litigative team for their determined and successful investiga-

tion and prosecution of defendant Mehdi Gabayzadeh…” A release issued by the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, called the case one of the department’s most significant corporate fraud cases. In 2005, the then 60-year old Gabayzadeh was convicted of eight charges including bank and secusee HONORED page 5

CONWAY — Soldiers and their families were given a special holiday treat when they held their Christmas party in North Conway last Saturday. Playing a key role in the party was Army Staff Sgt. Derrick Mead, 33, a Mount Washington Valley native and a 1997 graduate of Kennett High, and son of Mary and Ralph Mead of Duprey Road in North Conway. Formerly an Army-trained sniper and instructor, with three tours of duty in Iraq, the 11-year Army veteran for the past five months has been a recruiter based in Berlin with fellow Staff Sgt. Patrick Sens. That post allows him to live back home near his parents with his wife — 1995 Kennett High graduate Sara (Brace) Mead — and their four daughters. They are renovating one of their parents’ Duprey Road homes, according to Mead. He was asked by a fellow recruiter from Man-

U.S. asks journals to cut flu study facts

(NY Times) For the first time ever, a government advisory board is asking scientific journals not to publish details of biomedical experiments, for fear that the information could be used by terrorists to create deadly viruses. In the experiments, conducted in the United States and the Netherlands, scientists created a highly transmissible form of a deadly flu virus that does not normally spread from person to person. It was an ominous step, because easy transmission can lead the virus to spread all over the world. The work was done in ferrets, which are considered a good model for predicting what flu viruses will do in people. The virus, A(H5N1), causes bird flu, which rarely infects people but has an extraordinarily high death rate when it does. Since the virus was first detected in 1997, about 600 people have contracted it, and more than half have died. Scientists have watched the virus, worrying that if it developed the ability to spread easily from person to person, it could create one of the deadliest pandemics ever. A government advisory panel, the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, overseen by the National Institutes of Health, has asked two journals, Science and Nature, to keep certain details out of reports that they intend to publish on the research.

Central bank loans ease Euro credit strain, for now

PARIS (NY Times) — After more than a year of frustrating and mostly fruitless summit meetings of European political leaders, the European Central Bank appears to have found a more promising way to ease the euro zone crisis: give money to banks at bargain-basement rates. The E.C.B., making an offer too good for Europe’s banks to refuse, reported Wednesday that it had doled out almost half a trillion euros in low-cost three-year loans to

keep credit flowing at a time when European banks are finding it all but impossible to finance their operations through normal market channels. The lending reduces the “risk of a Lehman-type situation, where banks go into the new year facing a wave of refinancing and are unable to access the market, said Jacques Cailloux, the chief euro zone economist at Royal Bank of Scotland. But it is probably only a temporary solu-

tion. By acting essentially as a lender of last resort to the European financial system, the E.C.B. managed mainly to buy time for Europe to work out its longer-range problems of excessive debts, lagging economic competitiveness and limited fiscal unity. The E.C.B. allocated 489.2 billion euros, or $639 billion, to 523 institutions, well above the roughly 300 billion euros estimate of analysts polled by Reuters and Bloomberg News.

Syria reported to kill 100 Successor in North Korea on eve of visit by observers moves to consolidate power CAIRO (NY Times) — Syrian rights activists and opposition groups said on Wednesday that forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad had killed more than 100 defecting soldiers, civilians and antigovernment activists over the last three days in northwestern Syria. If confirmed, the killings would constitute one of the worst spasms of violence in the ninemonth-old uprising. Word of the killings, which the activists and opposition groups said had taken place near the city of Idlib near the Turkish border, was

reported a day before observers from the Arab League are to visit Syria for the first time to monitor pledges by Assad’s government to withdraw its troops from besieged areas. Some activists said Assad’s forces had intensified a campaign of deadly violence and intimidation partly because the impending arrival of Arab League monitors may prevent such action in coming days. “I fear the security forces may be trying to crush this thing before the monitors get in, said Murhaf Jouejati, a member of the Syrian National Council, an opposition group.

SEOUL, South Korea (NY Times) — The leadership of North Korea moved swiftly on Wednesday to portray Kim Jong-un, thrust into the international spotlight after the death of his father, as the country’s unchallenged ruler. With the military’s allegiance a central question to the new leader’s success in consolidating power, North Korean television showed senior military leaders saluting the young Kim on Wednesday as he received mourners at the Kumsusan mausoleum, where his father lay in state inside a glass case for public viewing. State television repeatedly broadcast images of senior military leaders pledging their fealty to the son. In South Korea, the National Intelligence Service reported to the National Assembly that shortly after Kim’s death was announced on Monday, North Korean troops canceled their field training and returned to their barracks on high alert, according to lawmakers who attended the agency’s closeddoor briefing.

An icy, slow commute for Judge blasts Salem sex offender southern N.H. Wednesday BY JAMES A. KIMBLE THE UNION LEADER

BY PAT GROSSMITH THE UNION LEADER

WOODSTOCK — Both sides of Interstate 93 were reopened between exits 32 and 34 after several accidents Wednesday afternoon, but significant delays were still being reported. Three rollover accidents were reported on the southbound and northbound sides of the road. Freezing rain has caused numerous accident including a major collision involving three tractor-trailer trucks on the high-rise bridge between Maine and New Hampshire, Steven McCausland, spokesman for the Maine agency, said. While Portsmouth police said I-95 was shut down at one point, New Hampshire state officials with the Traffic Management Center said that did not happen. Nicholas King, NH TMC operator, said earlier in the morning that traffic is jammed because of prior crashes on I-95 - which have since been cleared and “residual traffic” clogged the road. No state highway was shut down today, he said, although traffic was backed up at various points, including near the I-93 tollbooths in Hooksett and at the Maine border. Portsmouth Police Lt. Mark New-

port, however, said in about a two hour span, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., up to 50 cars slid off or were involved in crashed on icy I-95. Several tractortrailers jackknifed, he said. By 9:45 a.m., traffic was moving once again. Hampton Falls on I-95 North was the site of a major crash early in the commute involving two tractor-trailers and another vehicle and there were other crashes along the major highway. Dozens of fender-benders and rollovers happened across the state Wednesday morning from the Seacoast to Gilford, starting about 6:30 a.m. Motor vehicle crashes continued to pile up on icy highways throughout southern New Hampshire as the commute continued. A stretch of Interstate 93 South, near exit 6, was shut down just before 7 a.m. because of a crash, according to the state DOT Traffic Management Center. And traffic came to a standstill in both directions on I-93 near the Hooksett tolls because of the slick highway and crashes. State highway crews began salting and sanding the roads about 4 a.m. when a wintry mix of snow and icy rain moved in but as motorists headed out to work about 6:30 a.m., 911 calls began rolling in for rollovers and fender-benders from across the southern part of the state along Route 101, I-95, I-293 and I 93, to name a few.

Romney bus tour begins in N.H. NEWPORT — Presidential candidate Mitt Romney kicked off a threeday bus tour in New Hampshire on Wednesday. The former Massachusetts governor has been on the offensive lately, and told rival Newt Gingrich if he doesn’t like the criticism now, just wait. “If you can’t stand the relatively modest heat in the kitchen right now, wait until Obama’s hell’s kitchen shows up,” he said. In Newport on Wednesday, one woman questioned whether Romney was conservative enough. “I think if you look at my record in Massachusetts, you’ll be convinced that I’m a conservative businessman

who had the chance of helping turn the state around,” he said. On board what his campaign calls the “Earn It” bus tour, News 9 had the chance to sit down with Romney in between stops. “We are strong by coming together, and job creators have to be encouraged not demonized. I know the Democratic playbook. They’ve already put it out there. They want to kill Mitt Romney,” he said. Romney refused to engage on the impasse in Congress involving the payroll tax. “I’m not going to get into the sausagemaking process in Washington,” he said. —Courtesy of WMUR

BRENTWOOD — A Salem man was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in state prison Tuesday for sexually assaulting a young boy, capping what a judge described as one of the most disturbing cases he can remember. Judge Kenneth McHugh said the pattern of ongoing abuse the boy suffered at the hands of David Pyles was one of the worst he has seen during his 35 years on the bench. McHugh said he was especially disturbed by the interview Pyles, 39, gave to Salem police in January 2010. “It’s burned into my memory. The disinterest, the arrogance, the failure to take responsibility; it’s so shocking I can’t verbalize how angry I was when I heard it for the first time,” McHugh said of Pyles’ police interview. “I could go on for hours. This is just one of the worst crimes I’ve ever seen.” Pyles abused the boy repeatedly from 2007 to 2009, but claimed to Salem police that the youth was the aggressor. The boy was 12 to 14 years old when the abuse occurred. A jury swiftly convicted Pyles on Oct. 25 of three counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault after deliberating for only 20 minutes. Assistant County Attorney Lisa Cirulli argued that Pyles should spend 40 to 100 years behind bars under New Hampshire’s enhanced penalties for sexual offenders.

Defense lawyer Maria Peppas argued that the law was only designed for repeat offenders convicted of three separate offenses. McHugh decided to craft his own sentence, saying Pyles will have to wait more than two decades before he can take the state’s sexual offender program — usually a last step for inmates before they can apply for parole. “I don’t even want him placed in the sexual offender program until he does 25 years,” McHugh said. “He will have some time to spend outside the walls if he finally admits his complete responsibility for all these acts.” The judge also inquired at length about the boy and said he hoped the youth could pick up the pieces of his life and move on. Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten, who attended Tuesday’s hearing, said he was pleased that Pyles will spend decades behind bars. “It was an extremely difficult and trying case for everyone involved, including the detectives who worked the case,” Patten said. Rockingham County Attorney James Reams said afterward that he decided to argue for an enhanced penalty because of phone calls Pyles made from the jail following his conviction. Pyles maintained the boy was lying. “It was clear (Pyles) didn’t accept any responsibility for this,” Reams said. “We’re glad there will be a long time before he has an opportunity to ruin another life.”

House panel passes redistricting plan CONCORD — A special New Hampshire House panel has passed a plan to redraw House districts. The House Special Committee on Redistricting met Tuesday and voted 12-5 on the proposed districts. The House will take up its recommendations early next year. Plans to redraw congressional, Execu-

tive Council and county commissioner districts will be considered at a later time. Critics complained at a hearing last week and on Tuesday that the proposed House districts linked some city wards with towns. Districts are adjusted every 10 years after the census. —Courtesy of WMUR

The People Of Berlin Never Gave Up After months of unnecessary delays and uncertainty, Berlin Prison will finally open. And that’s good news for jobs in the North Country. Berlin Prison itself will add more than 300 jobs and provide a $40 million annual economic boost to the region. Berlin began its campaign for the prison in 2001. By 2007 construction had begun and in 2010 the prison was completed. However, for more than a year, a protracted budget fight in Congress left the prison fully complete but lacking the funds to open. But the people of Berlin never gave up. I have been to Berlin several times as this process unfolded, speaking with residents, touring the prison and meeting with Mayor Grenier and city officials. Since 2008, Berlin residents, businesses, non-profits and state agencies have pooled resources to form a partnership, the Northern New Hampshire Talent Team, to help the region best take full advantage of the economic benefits of this prison. This innovative approach is becoming a national model and exemplifies what is possible when the private and public sec-

tors work together. With the prison now beginning operations, the Talent Team will be busier than ever as it helps local businesses become suppliers to the prison, creates welcome packages for prison employees moving to Berlin, and supports North Country residents applying for new jobs. The prison is just one of several positive developments in Berlin recently. The Burgess BioPower Plant is under construction and promises 40 new jobs at the plant, 200 jobs in timber harvesting and trucking, and up to 400 jobs during the construction phase. The Gorham Paper Mill—thanks to the cooperative efforts of mill workers, state officials, and community leaders—has new owners who are committed to seeing it grow. In the next few months, Berlin residents will be able to submit applications to become correctional officers, healthcare workers, and maintenance workers at the prison. These will be dependable jobs that pay a sustainable wage. Different positions will require different qualifications, and veterans are strongly encouraged see BERLIN page 5

Once upon a Berlin Time Berlin 1964

1964 III

Hello fellow Berlinites. In a rematch of the year 1962, Democrat Laurier Lamontagne and Republican Edward Schuette went head to head in Berlin’s race for mayor. The winner in 1962 was Schuette and he had a repeat performance in March of 1964. During the beginning of April 1964, three Berlin priests said their first masses. The Reverend Norman Beaudoin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beaudoin of 125 Shepard Street, celebrated his first mass at St. Joseph church on Sunday, April 5. Beaudoin attended St. Joseph grammar school. Father Rene Gagnon celebrated his first mass on April 5, also at St. Joseph Church. He also attended St. Joseph School and then Notre Dame High School. The third priest was Father Donald Jefferey, who said his first mass on April 5, at St. Anne’s Church. He was a student of St. Regis Academy and Notre Dame High School. The churches in Berlin were certainly busy on this Sunday in April 1964. The picture that accompanies this story shows the three priests left to right: Father Beaudoin, Father Gagnon and Father Jefferey. The first weekend in April of 1964 also brought tragedy for two Massachusetts men hiking in the Presidential Range. These two ice climbers lost their lives in an avalanche that roared down the central gully of Huntington Ravine. These men were the 37th and 38th victims of this range and the 26th and 27th fatalities to perish from other than natural causes within one mile of the summit of Mt. Washington. The two young climbers were found buried deep in the snow, entombed about five feet below the surface. Ranger Goodrich said that the two men got up to a large ice formation in the gully of Huntington and began to rappel down on ropes. He figured that this may have triggered the avalanche that took the lives of these men. The scientific search used 44 men armed with 12 foot long aluminum probes. An area was marked out and the men with the probes moved across in a line, pushing their poles into the snow, until they would hit bottom. Another group dug ditches across the vicin-

ity, hoping to uncover some type of evidence pointing to the hikers. By mid afternoon on Monday, April 6, they eventually found the bodies of the two climbers. Their names were John J. Griffin, 39, of Assinippi, Massachusetts, and Hugo Stadtmeuller of Cambridge. It was certainly a sad ending to a day of climbing in the Presidential Range. Unfortunately, accidents similar to this day still take place today (2011). Mayor Edward Schuette began his second term in the end of March on a note of optimism. His inaugural address contained confidence about the growth of industry and the development of recreational facilities in this city. His hopefulness must have been a bit shattered by the closing of the Bermico Mill, which took place the following week. This mill closed its doors forever on April 3, 1964. Shipping of finished pipes and fittings continued for several weeks, until inventories were exhausted. Once the mill closed, 50 more men were displaced and they either went into other parts of the Brown Company or became unemployed. In all, three hundred men were displaced. It was during the years 1963-1964 that the mills of the Brown Company started to have problems and were being shut down. To this day, the Cascade Mill (Gorham Paper and Tissue) is the only one left, but it also shut down for almost a year, before being bought. It now seems to be operating at a profit. By the beginning of May 1964, registration at Notre Dame High School showed that enrollment would be up by 21 percent in 1964-1965. School authorities claimed that there were many factors for this enrollment increase and not the least important being the closure of St. Patrick’s parochial high school in June. A certain number of transfer students from the public school system was also a reason. It was called “tuition versus taxes”. Parents realized that the relatively small tuition fee was a saving compared to higher taxes that they would be forced to pay, should Notre Dame close its doors. This was what school see 1964 III page 5

the offices of the government. An industrial park in the Dead River basin along Jericho Road A new senior high school at the end of Madison Avenue. A controlled access highway running from Glen Avenue to Route 110 in Jericho. This would parallel the Grand Trunk railway tracks, with a connecting loop to Upper Main Street. These were the highlights of this report and even though there was no timetable, the cover of this information stated that this would be a 20 year program. The readers can now compare what was supposed to take place. Sadly, no one predicted the downfall of the paper industry in Berlin, which certainly must have had an effect. I would like to wish all of my readers a very “Merry Christmas” and a “Happy New Year”. In 2012, I will begin my 13th year writing the stories of “Once upon a Berlin Time” for the “Berlin Daily Sun”. My first story of 2012 will be number 640. Thanks to the hard work of our mayor and city council, Berlin is breathing new life and we shall certainly notice this as the year 2012 moves along. I will continue with the year 1964 in my next story. Questions or comments email poof@ ne.rr.com. Also, join the many fans of “Once upon a Berlin Time” on Facebook and guess at the weekly local mystery picture.

can grow and create jobs in the years to come. I want to thank the New Hampshire Departments of Resources and Economic Development, the New Hampshire Employment Security, and the White Mountains Community College. And of course, thank you to Mayor Grenier and all the city officials and community leaders who continue to fight for jobs for Berlin. Of course, we still have much to do. But I am committed to continuing to work with the region on long-term economic growth so that Berlin’s children can stay in the North Country knowing there are career paths for them and for their own children.

Appeals, Second Circuit voted unanimously to uphold Gabayzadeh’s conviction. Gabayzadeh had challenged his conviction on various grounds including ineffective trial counsel, unfair evidentiary rulings and insufficient evidence to support the transportation of stolen property conviction. He also argued his sentence was unreasonable. The court rejected all the issues raised or ruled any mistakes made did not effect the outcome of the trial.

Notre Dame close its doors. This was what school administrator Reverend Maurice W. Richer reiterated to the local media. The upcoming school year (1965) showed that 397 students were registered from grade 9 to grade 12.That number included 147 boys and 250 girls. These students came from the Catholic parishes in Berlin, Cascade and Gorham. Even though students received a great education at Notre Dame, the price of operating this facility kept going up and the enrollment kept going down. By 1972, this school closed its doors forever. Notre Dame opened for business on September 9, 1941 and graduated its first class in June of 1943. For thirty-one years, many Berlin students received their secondary education on top of School Street. It will be forty years this coming June (2012) since it closed its doors. Finally, Berlin’s long range master plan was unveiled in May of 1964. Here were some of the recommendations prepared by Hans Klunder and Associates, under the direction of the Berlin Planning Board: Berlin was going to have a major facelifting of its business district. I believe that some downtown fires played a role in this issue. Next, there would be a civic center built south of Exchange Street, to house

People looking for more information on jobs at the prison or throughout the North Country should visit the City of Berlin’s website: http://www.berlinnh. gov/ While the prison alone won’t solve the North Country’s economic problems, it’s an important step in the right direction. I am pleased that Congress has finally resolved this issue in a way that will help get people back to work in the region. I will continue to urge Congress to create jobs by investing in infrastructure: roads, bridges, and railways. This will generate construction jobs in the short term and help our businesses operate efficiently so they rities fraud and conspiracy in a $300

million fraud case. More than 700 people where laid off in the Androscoggin Valley when American Tissue went bankrupt and the local paper mills closed. Upon his conviction, Gabayzadeh was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which he is serving at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fort Dix, N.J. Earlier this year, the U.S. Court of

Rt 12v

Route 12v has many gift ideas for everyone in the family. Wives love to get into a nice warm vehicle so get them a remote starter and maybe even seat warmers. Seat warmers can be installed into any seat whether it’s leather or cloth. Husbands love to accessorize they’re vehicles so maybe a nice, chrome tube step for the truck lovers or chrome accents for the car owners. And for the kids, (if they are old enough to drive) we have cd players with usb input to accommodate iPods. Just plug in your

iPod into the usb input and it will charge the iPod and you control all music through the radio’s controls. We also have radios with built-in Parrot bluetooth so you can talk on the phone while keeping your eyes on the road. And if you want a family gift, maybe a flipdown DVD player to keep the kids nice and quiet on long trips. No more “are we there yet??” Now you’ll get “awe, are we already there???” Come down to Route 12v and see the many gift ideas we have for you. We have gift cards!

Middle Earth

Main Street’s love child/bad boy is now forty years old or more (it was the 60s, who remembers?) Way back then, we carried bell-bottoms, beads, tie-dyed shirts, incense, posters, waterbeds and unmentionables, the public was unsure if we were a cultural threat or simply amusing. We’ve aged, yet remain unmoderated, unpredictable and unrepentant in our bold selection of gifts. The list is long. Good thins are: Silver, jewelry, home

decor, candles and oils, fairies, gargoyles and dragons, ethnic, stained glass, tapestries, art prints, men stuff and lingerie, women’s home companions and unmentionables! Unusual varied gifts to please a nun to a pole dancer, a stoner to a banker! In short, we’re a fun shop with a flavor of a country store on acid. And the public seems to like it! 752-7400 Happy Holidays to all!

HOLIDAY BUYERS GUIDE

Once Upon a Berlin Time Paul “Poof” Tardiff has been writing history articles for the Berlin Daily Sun since August of 1999. His stories entitled “Once upon a Berlin Time” have become a weekly favorite for many Berlin citizens past and present. From the days in the mid 1820’s when the first pioneers came, up to the days of modern logging, the city of Berlin has developed a rich history. The Androscoggin River, which was used for the delivery of the products to our local mills, played a major role in Berlin’s growth and it helped generate stories that should never be forgotten.

Three books have been written and compiled by Mr. Tardiff, so that the memory of this city and its citizens, along with their early way of life can live on. Each one of these books would make a great holiday gift and keepsake for the lovers of the “City that Trees Built”. Enjoy Berlin’s legends, sports, events and historical characters of the past by purchasing one of these books or all three volumes. They may be purchased locally at Greetings Jewelers, Moffet House, Brown Company House, Savoir Flair and the Wonderland Bookstore.

Suzanne’s Partnership For Health

I want to take this time to say Thank-you everyone for a wonderful year. Merry Christmas and have a safe and fun holiday. This year I also had the opportunity to take in a couple of trainings, which has made a big difference in some clients already. One in particular is Wrapped Up in Fascia The TMJ Connection, the techniques has made a big difference in releasing tension in the cranium, neck and jaw muscles. It has helped release neck/jaw pain from TMJ, has helped release the tight head/jaw tension, which has made a big difference in reducing snoring. and insomnia. Some felt a deeper almost instant relaxation after the technique. A massage helps release built up tension that becomes stored in the muscles, which later starts aching. A Gift of Health with a gift certificate will give, that special someone or hard to buy for person, the opportunity to experience the ability in releasing their tension and aches. Gift Certificates are as much individualized to the giver as to the receiver, as a person giving a gift certificate, the options are to either specify

a dollar amount or specify the massage time. My practice is an in home professional site: I also go out in the community providing chair/ table Spa massage parties, a fun way of getting together. Find out, make your appointment with Suzanne’s Partnership for Health (603) 7524409. I’d also like to remind everyone, Touch for Health class Series, will resume in January. The trainings is Certified to give CE hours for LMT’s and Nurses, and Acupuncture’s, Randy Tilden is the Certified Instructor. A tip, I recognized another way to visualize the importance of the water connection to the body. “Each fiber of the living matrix (fascia), both outside and inside cells and nuclei, is surrounded by an organized layer of water that can serve as a separate channel of communication and energy flow. While electrons flow through the fibers (electricity), protons flow through the water layer.” (information taken from my training book) o again, to have the body work properly is important to be hydrated, call Suzanne Tilden LMT (603)752-4409.

By Holiday Mathis some kind of reward or celebration at the end of the cycle. It doesn’t have to be big to be significant. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You’ll be processing some negative thoughts. Greet obstinate, unhelpful ideas like old friends. Thank them for visiting, and then send them on their way. You don’t have to believe everything you think. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’ll be like a successful salesperson working the room. What you’re selling might be difficult to name correctly; it’s never what you think it is. More people will buy today than did all of last week. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You communicate in a kind of emotional shorthand with the ones you love. Celebrate the ease that comes with this tie. You’ve been through the good and the bad, and you’re still united in friendship. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Those who behave in heartless ways baffle you, but you give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they just don’t know the happiness they will find by leading with their heart. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Everything happens in stages. The action stage is coming. For now, you’re still contemplating how you might make a change and mentally perusing your options. TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Dec. 22). It’s a year of tough choices. You’ll shine as a decisive, sincere and devoted individual. Community involvement helps you establish a new niche. Actions that help your work will also be quite pleasurable, and vice versa. February is lucky for finance. March will end a hot pursuit with a satisfying outcome. Aries and Gemini people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 6, 30, 1, 24 and 18.

Get Fuzzy

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You are always capable of dreaming up the kind of zesty plan that makes your eyes widen and your pulse quicken. This is one of the things loved ones count on from you. You’ll be a leader in fun today. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You have to be able to measure what you’re doing -- not because it matters to you so much, but because it will help you when you’re talking about it to others. People will only understand what is concrete and quantifiable. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You have a way with words, and you’ll use it to get into an elite situation or out of a tricky one. You align yourself with the people who are in the place you want to be. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You may be a bit tired because the recent high level of activity is taking its toll. You’ll get a second wind this afternoon, though, that comes out of your total commitment to make something happen. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Every waking moment, you’ll be scanning your environment for people and resources that fit into your goals and make them easier to attain. Sometimes you won’t even be conscious of the fact that you are doing this. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Your schedule will be filled with things you feel you must do, not things you really love to do. Make a plan to remedy this situation by the weekend before someone else makes plans that worsen the situation. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You decide what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it. What will really make the action complete is

ABUSED MAN URGED TO GET HELP AND STOP SUFFERING IN SILENCE

DEAR ABBY: On Oct. 19 you printed a letter from “Bruised and Abused,” a man who is dating a woman who becomes physically violent when they argue. I know this is a touchy subject. I have heard from authorities that about half of domestic violence occurs when a woman throws the first blow. Most women believe, as the abusive girlfriend said, that her attack on him isn’t violence because she’s a woman and he is a man. As difficult as it may be, we need to talk about the role women play in the domestic violence cycle as well as the responsibilities of men. I’m saving the letter from “Bruised” to remind me. -- DONALD, A CALIFORNIA DENTIST DEAR DONALD: Since I printed that letter I have heard from readers telling me my answer didn’t go far enough. (I advised him to end the relationship.) Among those who wrote to me were doctors, members of law enforcement and mental health specialists -- as well as former victims. My newspaper readers comment: DEAR ABBY: Because we are bigger and stronger does not mean we don’t get abused. I was abused by my former wife and an ex-girlfriend before I recognized it for what it was and got myself the help I needed. Nobody else was there for me. If she is hitting him, he needs to call the police. If he has marks on him, SHE will go to jail. Men are too often ashamed to call the police because men think it reflects on their manhood. However, they need to put that shame aside and get the help they need. -- JOE IN MISSOURI DEAR ABBY: I’m a retired cop. “Bruised” asked you if what his girlfriend is doing is domestic abuse. Your reply did not mention that his girlfriend hitting him IS domestic abuse. It doesn’t matter if the abuser is male or female, nor the size of the victim. “Bruised” should call the cops and report this before she goads him into a response that gets him arrested. The courts can mandate the therapy she apparently needs. -- RUSS IN

HELENA, MONT. DEAR ABBY: I was a victim. People asked me why I didn’t fight back. I wasn’t raised to hit women. In the end, my wife put me in the hospital twice and left me blind in my left eye. She spent nine months in jail for everything that happened. Violence is violence regardless of who is throwing the punches. Tell that man he needs to get out now! God forbid he ends up dead. -- BATTERED IN ARIZONA DEAR ABBY: It doesn’t matter if he is a boy and she is a girl, or that he is bigger and stronger. Women do abuse men. It’s a crime that too often goes unreported. He should contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800) 799-7233 or SAFE (Stop Abuse for Everyone) at www.safe4all.org. -CLAUDIA, Ph.D., LONG BEACH, CALIF. DEAR ABBY: I agree with you that the man needs to leave “Carmen.” But something he wrote in his letter concerns me. He said, “I don’t want to end the relationship, but I think it’s the only way I can make her see things from my perspective.” This indicates to me that he thinks he can “teach her a lesson” by breaking up with her, and that this would stop her behavior. That would be a huge misconception on his part. Carmen’s behavior isn’t something that can be modified through a breakup. It is something that will require intense counseling to correct, if it can be corrected at all. The boyfriend needs to end things for good -- and run like the wind! -- BRUCE IN HOUSTON DEAR ABBY: Domestic abuse isn’t just male-on-female. It is very often female-on-male, and partner-on-partner in homosexual relationships. “Bruised and Abused” needs to notify the police, get a restraining order and stay away. -- STUDENT NURSE IN CHAPEL HILL

Driver in fatal accident identified WHITEFIELD — State Police have released the identity of a man who died in a truck accident in Whitefield on Tuesday morning. The driver was identified as Keith A. Butts, 52, of Gadsden, Tenn. Butts was driving the tractor trailer loaded with steel beams headed for Canaan, Vt., early Tuesday morning when the vehicle failed to negotiate the intersection of Routes 3 and 116 in Whitefield. Route 116 was icy at

the time, though State Police have not said definitively whether road conditions were the cause of the accident. Butts’ truck traveled straight through the three-way intersection, through a parking lot and over an embankment. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy to determine the cause of death was scheduled for Wednesday by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Concord.

in Boston. Hanson said that project will consume all of the company’s shop time until the first week of March 2012. He said the company has some smaller projects it has been awarded or is hoping to get awarded that will provide work after the Liberty Mutual job is finished. In addition, he said Isaacson is still negotiating to get the steel contract for the Burgess BioPower biomass plant in Berlin. A $2.25 million loan from pro-

ceeds from the New Market Tax Credits for the Burgess BioPower project has been made available to Isaacson Structural Steel through the N.H. Business Finance Authority. Hanson said some of that funding has been used to operate the company but part is still available for operations. Use of the money is subject to BFA approval. Isaacson is one the region’s largest employers and has been listed among the top 100 private companies in the state.

chester to help arrange the holiday Christmas party last Sunday, which gave him less than a week to prepare Saturday afternoon. They were to spend the earlier part of the day snow tubing just up the street at Cranmore Mountain Resort, and needed a place to gather afterward. Sgt. Mead to the rescue Being the local guy, Mead was asked to find a venue for the party, which led him to call his old friend, Vito Marcello, of Vito Marcello’s Italian Bistro of North Conway Village. “I asked Vito, whom I’ve known for a long time, if we could use his restaurant for a potluck kind of gathering. He said absolutely — but then he said, ‘But this is what we’re going to do. We’re going to have pizza for the kids, and pasta, pasta salads and desserts.’ I said, ‘Vito, we’ve got over 100 people coming to this thing!’ But he wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

Soldiers and their families began showing up at 1 p.m. Saturday. They were greeted by Vito, his mother Angela and sister Toni Petell, as well as by their staff, all of whom had come in early to cater the holiday feast, which lasted until 3 p.m. An Army Santa was among the guests. He gave out gifts, which included stocking stuffers for the children. “Unbeknownst to us,” said Mead, who has known the Marcello family since they first opened Bellini’s in North Conway on Seavey Street in 1988, “Vito had had his staff go out and buy stockings which they filled with chocolates and Matchbox cars and the like.” The feast was much appreciated, according to Mead. “The food was unbelievable. I went up three times for just for the servings of the Broccoli Chicken Alfredo. They had cakes and cookies, and individual jello cups, which the kids loved. We can’t thank the Marcello family and their

staff enough,” said Mead. The soldiers presented the Marcello family with special awards of recognition during the party in addition to recognizing the company’s soldiers. “Our company commander Capt. Andrew Masone gave Vito and his family a special citation,” said Mead, who said the soldiers were truly moved by the Marcello family and staff’s generosity. “They would never ask for publicity,” said Mead,“but I know what he does for police and firefighters and the military. I just think that as a soldier, coming back to this area, it’s awesome to know that people are patriots and they’re still out there. They care, and they want to do something nice for soldiers.” “Everyone said that bar none it was the best Christmas party that any had ever been to in years,” added Mead, who said that Vito Marcello often sent him care packages of his sauces when

he was stationed in Georgia. On Netflix Mead was a sniper all three of his tours of duty in Iraq in 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and in 2005 and 2007-’08. He most recently was an instructor for the U.S. Army’s sniper school in Fort Benning, Ga. He was featured in the video, “Modern Sniper,” on Netflix. Asked how he felt about the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq after 11 years this past week, Mead said, “No comment. I’m a soldier.” TheMarcello family’s restaurant business began in 1927 in Cranston, R.I. It grew into a number of locations in southern New England “famous for authentic Italian ‘more than you can eat’ meals,” according to the restaurant’s website. The family recently moved its operations from Willow Common on Route 16, the site now occupied by Smoke and Water, back to its original Seavey Street location.

New survey underscores need for more services, funding for victims of domestic violence BERLIN – RESPONSE to Sexual and Domestic Violence recently welcomed new data that supports the need for funding and services for victims of violence against women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its first National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), which describes the great prevalence of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence. According to the survey of more than 16,500 adults, on average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States. In the 12 months prior to the survey, more than 7 million women were the victims of physical violence by an intimate partner. One in four women and one in seven men reported severe physical violence perpetrated by an intimate partner. This includes a range of physical violence from a slap to a longer term pattern of abuse. The data also states that women are four times more likely than men to be beaten; six times more likely to be slammed against something; and nine times more likely to be strangled or suffocated. Seventy-two percent of women and 18 percent of men reported being frightened by the violence. “We have been providing services to both male and female victims since 1979,” said Donna Cummings, director of RESPONSE. “We’ve seen an amazing increase in the number of victims and survivors reaching out for support. In just this year alone, we have seen over 25 percent more individuals contact our program. Despite

the cuts in funding, we are continuing to provide support services and crisis intervention 24 hours a day.” Over one million women reported being raped in the 12 months prior to the survey. Nearly 92 percent of the female victims of rape were assaulted by an intimate partner or acquaintance. Nearly one in five women and one in 71 men reported having been raped at some point in their lifetime. The report emphasizes the importance of prevention efforts. Approximately 80 percent of female victims experienced their first rape before the age of 25 and nearly half experienced the first rape before age 18. Almost a third (28 percent) of men experienced their first rape when they were ten years of age or younger. The report’s release supports the federal government’s efforts to address intimate partner violence, sexual assault and stalking including the recently introduced Senate bill to reauthorize the landmark Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). VAWA is the cornerstone of the federal government’s response to these crimes, authorizing critical funding and support to agencies serving survivors and to the criminal justice system. Victim advocates across the country are urging Congress to swiftly reauthorize the legislation. “We are proud to have Senator Shaheen as a co-sponsor of this legislation,” said Cummings. “We hope that other members of the delegation will join her in signing on once VAWA reaches the House.” RESPONSE is a program of Coos County Family Health Services.

Members of the Gorham Walmart administrative staff arrived at the Edward Fenn Elementary School recently with duel surprises. The store selected EFS as the Elementary School of the area, awarding classroom teachers with $100 gift cards to purchase needed items for their classrooms. Walmart also responded to letters written by fourth grade students, Sidney Leclerc and Olivia Halle with a gift of several new sleds. The girls wrote to Walmart with a request for the new sleds for outdoor winter activity on the school’s beloved sliding hill. The attached photo shows Sidney Leclerc and Olivia Halle with Walmart representatives.

BY JEAN LEBLANC THE BERLIN DAILY SUN

LEBANON- The Raiders of Lebanon showed why they were state runner-ups in 2010-11, scoring six goals in the first period and rolling to a 7-0 victory over the Berlin/Gorham girls’ hockey team last Saturday. Lebanon peppered starting goal tender Jessica Gray with seventeen shots in the first period alone. Goals were scored at :55 by Aubrie Majeruk, 4:10 by Karlie Swenson, 7:03 by Amelia Gage, 9:40 by Chrissy Drake, 11:57 Brittney Shones, and at 12:55 by Kyra Hebert. Berlin eighth grade goal tender Chelsea Caron came on to spell Gray and picked up three more saves in the first period. There was just one goal at 14:15 of the second period and that came off the stick of Hebert to make the final score 7-0.

The Berlin goal tending duo of Gray and Caron had eleven and fourteen saves respectively. Lebanon’s Erica Moffit had six saves for the game. “They were fast and played good positional hockey,” said Berlin coach Gary Boucher. “They are a good team and it was great to see that our girls never stopped skating. Lebanon is a good team to use as a model. Our girls need to raise their level of play to the same level as Lebanon. It is definitely a good goal to shoot for.” The Berlin/Gorham girls will host the Hanover Marauders on Tuesday afternoon at the Notre Dame Arena. BHS 0 0 0-0 LHS 6 1 0-7 Scoring-Lebanon: Majeruk, Swenson, Gage, Drake, Shones, and Hebert 2, B/G none. Saves: Gray 11, Caron 14, Moffit 6.

New ATV Club forms in North Country COLEBROOK -- A new All-Terrain Vehicle Club has been formed in the Colebrook, Stewartstown, Columbia area of Coos County. Craig Washburn of Colebrook was elected the first President. The club is named “Metallak ATV Club”. It is named after a Native American of the area. He was the last survivor of a band of Native Americans known as the Androscoggin. The band, part of the Abenaki nation, inhabited the upper Androscoggin and Magalloway rivers along the northern border of

New Hampshire and Maine. Blinded by accidents in his later years, Metallak died in 1853 at the reputed age of 120 in Stewarstown. The name was chosen from 41 publicly submitted suggestions. The winner received a $100 gift certificate, compliments of First Run Home Entertainment, of Colebrook. The winner has asked to remain anonymous but has given the gift back to the club for further use to increase membership. There will be a club meeting and membership drive in January.
