North Country business leaders Gorham man to serve six months for peeping buy Balsams Grand Resort Bob Hookway, Union Leader DIXVILLE NOTCH - Balsams View, LLC, a partnership of New Hampshire North Country business leaders, Daniel Dagesse and Daniel Herbert, Jr., has purchased the Balsams Grand Resort and Hotel from the Tillotson Corporation for $2.3 million. Hebert and Dagesse have been interested in preserving the landmark hotel for more than a year, and made a new offer in recent weeks that met Tillotson’s criteria. “We care deeply about restoring the Balsams
Grand Resort Hotel to its full glory as a worldclass destination resort and seeing it thrive for decades to come,” said Daniel Hebert. “We want to provide a stable operation that we can all be proud of.” It is anticipated that extensive renovations to the Balsams will take approximately 18 months. Hebert said the first step is to winterize the hotel and decommission the biomass plant. Architects and engineers will then evaluate the property and formulate a renovation see BALSAMS page 9
Forest Society to conserve bulk of Balsams land BY MELISSA GRIMA THE BERLIN DAILY SUN
DIXVILLE NOTCH — The Dec. 6 sale of the Balsams Resort in Dixville Notch, brought with it not only new owners for the resort, but a new plan to conserve the bulk of the land owned by the resort. The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (SPNHF) announced yesterday that they have signed a purchase and sales agreement, to protect 5,800 acres of the Balsams’ approximately 7,000 acres through
the use of conservation easements. According to Jack Savage, VP for Communications/ Outreach at the SPNHF, the agreement was signed with the Tillotson Corporation after they conveyed the property with conservation restrictions to businessmen Dan Dagesse and Dan Hebert. In order to complete the transaction, however, Savage said the SPNHF will need to raise the cost of the purchase of the easements, which came in at $850,000. see CONSERVE page 9

GORHAM -- A Gorham man accused of peeping pleaded guilty to multiple misdemeanor counts in First Circuit Court last week and will spend six months in jail as a result. Jordan Carrier, 23, of Evans Street, was found guilty of three counts of violation of privacy for viewing a woman on Crestwood Drive through her bedroom window without her knowledge in Sept., Oct., and Nov. 2009. For those charges he
was sentenced to concurrent terms of six months in jail and one year of probation. A conviction on a fourth charge for violation of privacy during Dec. 2009, carried a consecutive sentence of one year in jail, suspended for four years and an additional year of probation. The probation will include a sex offender treatment program. Three charges of violations of privacy against Carrier for incidents in subsequent months were dropped, and six additional charges were placed on see PEEPING page 8
State seeking to expand Jericho ATV park, build connector trail BY BARBARA TETREAULT BERLIN – The state Bureau of Trails is negotiating to purchase an additional 1,500 acres of land for Jericho Mountain State Park and at the same time is working on an ATV connector trail that would run from the park to Pittsburg.
“We would have the ability to get all the way from Berlin to Pittsburg,” Trails Bureau head Chris Gamache said. In a briefing before the city council Monday night and in a follow-up interview, Gamache said the bureau is negotiating with Dillon Investments LLC see JERICHO page 7

Is sleeping on the subway worthwhile?
NEW YORK (NY Times) — A ride on a New York subway can be a sensory overload: sometimes musicians perform for change; conductors plead to those who hold open train doors to relent; and passengers, often in unimaginably close proximity, subject one another to all sorts of sights, sounds, smells and touches, preferably inadvertent. Amid all of that, some New Yorkers nevertheless manage to fall asleep. So are these naps really worth the trouble? Dr. Carl Bazil, director of the Epilepsy and Sleep Division at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, offered to try to find out. Dr. Bazil, who has studied sleep patterns for 20 years, says there are five stages of sleep, with Stage 1 being the least restorative. To reach Stage 1 sleep, riders must be able slow down their eye movements. To get even more productive Stage 2 sleep, riders must relax their muscles and stop moving their eyes entirely. As Dr. Bazil watched the riders sitting across from him, the nappers’ eyelids fluttered when train doors opened. The riders also seemed to clench their messenger bags and backpacks with death grips. “I suspect all you get is Stage 1 sleep; it’s not going to be restorative,” he said. “It’s kind of wasted sleep.”

WASHINGTON (NY Times) — Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday overruled the Food and Drug Administration’s decision that emergency contraceptives be sold freely over the counter, including to teenagers 16 years old and younger. The pill, called Plan B OneStep, has been available without a prescription to women
17 and older, but those 16 and younger have needed a prescription — and still will because of Sebelius’s decision. In some states, pharmacists can write the prescription on the spot for teenagers. But the restrictions have meant the pills were only dispensed from behind the counter — making them more difficult for everyone to get. The pill, if taken after unprotected sex,
halves the risk of a pregnancy. Under the law, Sebelius has the authority to overrule the agency, but no health secretary has ever done so, according to an FDA spokeswoman. Her decision on an emotional issue that touches on parental involvement in birth control for teens is likely to have powerful political reverberations in a presidential election season.
Blagojevich sentenced to 14 years in prison CHICAGO (NY Times) — Rod R. Blagojevich, the former governor of Illinois, was sentenced on Wednesday to 14 years in federal prison for 18 felony corruption convictions, including trying to sell or trade the Senate seat that President Obama left behind when he moved to the White House. The sentence, which fell just short of what prosecutors had asked for, came about an hour after Blagojevich apologized in court to residents of his state, to the judge in his case and to his family. “I have nobody to blame but myself for my stupidity and actions, words, things that I did,
that I thought I could do,” he said, standing at a courtroom lectern and facing the judge. Blagojevich’s crimes carried maximum sentences that could have stretched into hundreds of years behind bars, but federal prosecutors had argued that he deserved at least 15 to 20 years in prison. Blagojevich’s lawyers were seeking far less, saying simply that they were advocating for “the lowest sentence possible.” Blagojevich, a Democrat who won two terms as governor before being impeached and removed from office, will become Illinois’s fourth governor in recent memory to go to prison.

FUTABA, Japan (NY Times) — Futaba is a modern-day ghost town — not a boomtown gone bust, not even entirely a victim of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that leveled other parts of Japan’s northeast coast. Its traditional wooden homes have begun to sag and collapse since they were abandoned in March by residents fleeing the nuclear plant on the edge of town that began spiraling toward disaster. Roofs possibly damaged by the earth’s shaking have let rain seep in, starting the rot that is eating at the houses from the inside. The roadway arch at the entrance to the empty town almost seems a taunt. It reads: “Nuclear energy: a correct understanding brings a prosperous lifestyle.” Those who fled Futaba are among the nearly 90,000 people evacuated from a 12-mile zone around the Fukushima Daiichi plant and another area to the northwest contaminated when a plume from the plant scattered radioactive cesium and iodine.

N.H. agrees to repay $35m in Medicaid payments CONCORD — New Hampshire will return $35 million in Medicaid payments for failure to comply with Medicaid requirements in 2004. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office released a repayment schedule on Tuesday, calling for quarterly payments in excess of $4 million each year over the next two fiscal years. The funds were used in 2004 to help 26 hospitals in the state offset costs of treating their most vulnerable
patients. The funds went to hospitals that serve a disproportionate share of low income or uninsured patients. The state appealed a federal ruling that it must repay the funds and recently lost a motion for reconsideration of the adverse ruling. The money will be repaid to the federal health department’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. CMS disqualified the $35 million in 2009. —Courtesy of WMUR

Senior Meals road toll snowed out To the editor: Senior Meals/Meals-onWheels would like to thank those who helped out during our annual road toll on Wednesday, November 23. This year’s event will go down in history as the “Blizzard Road Toll” because of the storm that came along on one day amidst our warm winter that created mayhem during an important fundraiser for Meals-on-Wheels! Our dedicated volunteers raised about half the amount we have raised in years past and as discouraging as it is, we understand the tough times around us! It will just make Senior Meals work harder to be sure that our elderly population is getting the nutrition they need to age healthy and independently. Our programs for senior citizens are funded in many
ways and it is a great example of community coming together to take care of our elder members. We want to be sure to express our thanks to you all. Pay to throw unfair to those who do recycle To the editor: I read with interest, a letter to the editor, dated Friday, Dec. 2 regarding recycling. I’m wondering if all of our Berlin businesses recycles at the present time? If the answer is yes, then fabulous! If the answer is no, then what are the reasons for those choices? personally recycle, as does everyone in this building. It’s always been the correct thing to do, not only for myself, but many other Berlinites. If each one of our businesses are not presently required to recycle, then shouldn’t they also be required to do so? I am aware that many folks in our humble community have chosen not to recycle. I propose that every
one of our businesses be required to recycle, and place it outside for pick up, as are the rest of this precious community. I recognize that this would cause much work; that we need our businesses, etc. However, I believe that by requiring businesses to recycle also, that would go a very long way to substantially decreasing the amount of tonnage sent to our landfill. Having lived in Berlin for over 60 years, the “pay to throw” proposal would be unfair to the many many landlords whose tenants, and themselves have been faithful to recycle. Jackie Reardon Berlin

Hello fellow Berlinites. I would like to touch on the history of Berlin that took place fortyseven years ago. For some of us, it seems like just yesterday, but in reality we are talking almost one half of a century in the past. Berlin’s new and first city manager, Stanley Judkins, listed all of the accomplishments that took place in this city during his first year. They ranged from expansion of Berlin’s communication system to centralized purchasing and machine accounting. Now, in 1964, more ideas were going to be presented to the city council. One of these was a central communications center for both police and fire. This would include telephone, radio and fire alarm control. While costs were going up all over the country, Judkins wanted to hold the line in Berlin, as long as he could. A great story of human interest made the headlines of the local paper in January of 1964. It was about a man named Napoleon Blanchette. To his family, he was known as “Pepere”, but a more fitting name might have been “Mother”. The reason for this was because the 74 year-old widower kept house for his four grandchildren whose mother had passed away just before Christmas 1962 and whose father was blind. Mr. Blanchette was a plumber by trade in Berlin for many years, retiring at 65 years of age. Now, he was taking on his new job of being a caretaker with all the vim and vigor of the father in “My three sons” TV series. He moved into his son’s house in Montpelier, Vermont, soon after his daughter-in-law passed away and started playing his role as ‘Mr. Mom”. Blanchette said that it was a busy job, as it started at 5:30 a.m. when he would begin preparation for his son Napoleon, Jr., and 12 year old granddaughter Gloria. He then began his second round of breakfast at 7 a.m. for grandchildren Raymond 11, Denise 10 and Pauline 7. After the youngsters were off to school, “Pepere” went about a full schedule of doing dishes, laundry, cleaning the house, cooking the next meal and even mending clothes. The rest of the family did not sit idly by, while Napoleon did his duties. They all had
responsibilities to take on. Saturday was the big cleaning day of the week. This is when Gloria would do the groceries and Denise would help. Despite all of the work, the family still knew how to have fun and this was with music. Napoleon, Jr., played the organ, Gloria played piano and the rest sang. “Pepere” Blanchette was a native of Berlin and most of his relatives lived here. I am sure that some still do and can recall the elderly “Mr. Mom” vividly. He must have been quite a man. In January of 1964, the stage was set for the mayoral race here in Berlin. There would be three candidates trying for this city’s top post. They were Republican Mayor Edward Schuette, who was just completing his first term. Next, was Democrat Laurier Lamontagne, who was upset by Schuette in his bid for a third term. Finally, Democrat Earl Gage was also in the field. He had been the guiding light for the previously victorious Democrats. Finally, the big news during the middle of January 1964 was the announcement that the Bermico (Berlin Mills Company) Mill in this city would close down permanently on April 1, 1964. The Brown Company had decided to concentrate its entire Bermico fibre pipe manufacturing at its newer plants in Oregon, Alabama and New Jersey. This company’s vice president said that they tried everything to make this local mill profitable. This included crew curtailments, job consolidations and other economic moves. The figures for 1963 showed that this mill continued to show substantial losses throughout the year. By 1964, there were only 50 men employed at the Bermico Mill and this plant usually reduced production during the winter months. At its peak in 1954, Bermico operations employed more than 300 men. The closing of this Brown Company mill came almost a year after the closing of the Burgess Sulphite Mill. This pulp plant went down in March of 1963. The revealing of the closing of Berlin’s Bermico operations was made by company officials and union local 75 on Wednesday, January 15, 1964. see 1964 page 5

Berlin Rec. Dept. offers incentive for people to register for programs by deadline BERLIN -- As an encouragement for the community to join Berlin Recreation programs by deadline posted, the Berlin Recreation Department has introduced an “incentive raffle.” Each season, people who register with full payment for a program by the deadline advertised will be automatically entered to win an AnV Chamber of Commerce gift certificate (value - $25.00). This raffle is in effect immediately starting with the winter season of Berlin Recreation programs. For example, anyone who registered for the second and third grade coed basketball program by Nov. 30 is already a possible winner! The high cost of shipping Bermico’s products from Berlin was a major factor in this mill’s shut down. This is why the city of Berlin had been screaming for better highways for many years and it seems like it could never be accomplished, even to this day. One of the major moves after Harold Fair became president in the mid 1950s, was to begin a program of establishing Bermico mills in various parts of the United States. The first was in Oregon to serve the West Coast. Later, the plants in Alabama and New Jersey were built to serve the South and midEast Coast. So, Berlin’s Bermico Mill was doomed. The Bermico operation in Berlin had a long career. It began during World War I with the production of powder containers for six-inch guns. After the war, this mill was idle for a short period, but in the mid 1920’s went into the production of drainage pipes for coal mines. Then, electrical conduit came on the scene in the late 1920’s and this signaled the beginning of a booming business. The Brown Company now became a leader in the field of fiber pipe with its

Near the end of World War II, sewer pipe was added to the Bermico line to fill the gap caused by the shortage of iron. Perforated pipe was developed for land drainage and for distribution of industrial and residential wastes into leaching fields. One of the Brown Company’s greatest achievements was the perfection of the fiber pipe, by their great research and development department here in Berlin. Bermico production reached its peak during the mid 1950s, when more than 300 people were employed in making pipe and fittings at the Berlin plant in 1954. Brown Company began its nationwide expansion of Bermico plants in 1956, with the purchase of the newly completed mill in Corvallis, Oregon. It then built a mill in Birmingham, Alabama in 1960 and Mt. The National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) announced that Roberta O. Balon, MS, RD, LD, Androscoggin Valley Hospital Director of Clinical Nutrition Services, has renewed the Certified Diabetes Educator® (CDE®) status by successfully completing the continuing education renewal option process. Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be eligible for certification. Achieving the CDE® credential demonstrates to people with diabetes and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for people with diabetes. Currently, there are over 17,000 diabetes educators who hold NCBDE certification.
This group of students from the Gorham Community Learning Center delivered the Christmas tree chain to Sears. Pictured with the children are Sears employees Eric Gagne and Brian Lariviere. Community partnerships take many different forms, but most of the time the participants in these collaborative efforts have to do with adults working together. In a unique partnership the children of the Gorham Community Learning Center helped the employees at Sears in Gorham decorate their Christmas tree. Through this win-win collaborative effort the children worked on developing important small muscle coordination while Sears benefited from receiving the gift of the paper Christmas chain. In addition to this Sears offered the children a coloring contest and provided prizes to two winners, which will be drawn on Christmas Day. The Learning Center challenges other business owners to think of creative ways to teach young children how to give back to their community.

for two parcels of land totaling 1,500 acres. The original 7,200 acres of the park were also purchased from Dillon. One parcel, about 1,300 acres, is in the northern section of the park. Most of the parcel is within Berlin but a small section is in Milan. Gamache said the parcel is the preferred location for the 200-site campground planned for the park. The bureau has just issued a request for proposals from developers interested in building and operating the campground under a 20-year lease from the state. Gamache said the campground would require about 400 acres. Dillon had plans to do a residential subdivision on the property and received subdivision approval from the Berlin planning board in 2009 for Phase I, which called for 47 lots ranging from 11 to 22 acres. Dillon has now decided instead to sell the land to the state for the park. The other parcel is about 224 acres in the southeast corner of the park that has existing trails on it already. Gamache said the bureau has a verbal agreement with Dillon and the parties have agreed on an appraised price, which he declined to release because there are still some details to be worked out. Gamache said funding to cover the acquisition would come from ATV registration fees. He said he hopes to have the deal finalized and before the Governor and Executive Council for approval this winter. The acquisition would bring the total acreage of the park to about 8,700 acres. Gamache said the bureau has not yet determined how many miles of trail the purchase would add to the planned 140-mile trail network. Gamache said he envisions Jericho Mountain State Park as the hub for ATV activity in the state and the bureau is working on a connector trail that would allow ATV riders to travel from the park all the way to Pittsburg. After a year of work and discussions with private landowners, the bureau has mapped out a route largely using existing trails. The trail would travel on the ATV trail through Berlin to connect to trails in Success and then to Cambridge and Errol and from there to Colebrook and ultimately Pittsburg. There is a half-mile section of the proposed trail that crosses the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge in Errol. Because ATVs are not allowed on the refuge, Gamache said discussions are underway to exchange a piece of land with the refuge for that approximately 100 to 200 acre parcel near the Thirteen Mile Woods. Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge Manager Paul Casey yesterday said he recognizes the importance of the connector trail to the region
and is willing to try to find a way to accommodate the bureau and ATV advocates. He said the recently completed comprehensive conservation plan for the refuge, which was developed with public input, does not allow ATV use on the refuge. “It would be very difficult to get an ATV trail through the refuge,” he said. But Casey said he would be open to a land swap as long as the land offered in return was of high wildlife value. He said there are several parcels that would fit that description. “I think there are options out there,” he said. Casey said the next step is to pull together a meeting with representatives of the town of Errol, the county commission, the ATV clubs, Errol Town Forest, the refuge, and the bureau to work out the details. Gamache said the bureau also needs legislation passed to develop an ATV trail on the Connecticut Lakes Headwater tract in Pittsburg. Currently, ATV trails on state property are required to follow environmental standards that include both a course and fine criteria filter. Gamache said a waiver process was put in place for the Jericho Mountain State Park and the bureau is looking for that flexibility on the Headwaters tract. Earlier this fall, Gamache said he attended a convention in Minneapolis and did a breakout session on the ATV trail system at Jericho Mountain State Park and plans for the connector trail. Mayor Paul Grenier thanked Gamache and the bureau for its work developing the ATV park and connector trail. Grenier said he believes the ATV industry is a segment of the tourism market that Coos County can successfully attract. Earlier in the meeting, the council approved Gamache’s request to use city sidewalks on a section of both Coos and Hutchins Street for its snowmobile trail. Gamache explained that Babcock and Wilcox, the general contractor on the Burgess BioPower biomass plant, are not able to allow use of the mill site for OHRV use while construction is underway because of insurance issues. He said that has forced the bureau to come to the city for permission to use city sidewalks to maintain the trail, which is part of Corridor 12 connecting trail systems in Gorham and Success. “It’s pretty much all we’ve been left with for the next two years,” Gamache said. Grenier said Cate Street Capital officials have assured him that access will be restored once construction of the biomass plant is completed. In fact, he noted the trail is required under the stipulations reached between the developer and city.

Jay Blais, 30, of Berlin, failed to appear on Dec. 2, to answer a charge of possession a controlled drug. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest by Judge James Carroll and bail was set at $500 cash. Kristy Laflamme, 38, of Berlin, failed to appear to answer a charge of conduct after an accident. A bench warrant was issued for her arrest. Bail was set at $500 cash. A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of Jillian Paradis, 29, of Berlin, after she failed to appear for a Dec. 2 hearing. She is charged with driving after revocation or suspension. Bail was set at $500 cash. Stephen Rich, 41, of Berlin, was found guilty of criminal mischief and sentenced to 12 months in jail with all but 90 days suspended. The suspended sentence is conditioned on two years of good behavior, and entrance into a 28 day residential treatment program. Rich was given credit for 90 days of pre-trial confinement and ordered to pay restitution of $50. A charge of criminal trespass against Rich was dropped. Eric Rodger, 35, of Berlin, was found guilty of obstructing government administration and breach of bail. He was sentenced to concurrent terms of six months in jail, with all but 30 days suspended, on the conditions of good behavior for two years. He was also ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and comply with recommended follow-up. A charge of criminal trespass against Rodger was dropped. Crystal Howland, 30, of Berlin, was found guilty of theft from a building. She was sentenced to one year of probation and 30 days in jail. The jail term was suspended for one year on the condition of good behavior. She was also ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and comply with recommended follow-up. A second charge of theft from a building against Howland was dropped. A charge of simple assault against Zoila Molina, 18, of Berlin, was placed on file without finding for one year on the condition of good behavior.
Carol Downing, 44, of Campton, was found guilty of possession of drugs. She was fined $500. Arthur Goodwin, 61, of Berlin, was fined $100 for operating without a valid license. A charge that Goodwin was operating an unregistered vehicle was dropped.Nicole Guinard, 28, of Berlin, was found guilty of willful concealment. She was fined $100. Justin Aikens, 20, of Berlin, was found guilty of driving after revocation or suspension. He was fined $500. A charge of speeding against Michael Dube, 47, of Dummer, was placed on file without finding for one year on the condition of good behavior. A charge of theft from a store against Jessica Waninger, 25, of Gorham, was placed on file without finding for one year on the condition of good behavior. She was also ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and comply with recommended follow-up. Jonathan Salvatore, 26, of Berlin, was found guilty of driving after revocation or suspension. He was fined $250. A charge of driving an un-inspected vehicle was dropped. A felony charge of conspiracy to deliver articles to prisoners against Christopher Kelly, 34, of Laconia, was dropped. Raquez Holmes, 41, of East Taunton, Mass., was fined $77.50 for speeding. DJ Salyer Trucking of Bow, was fined $416.71 for exceeding gross weight. Two misdemeanor charges of receiving stolen property against Timothy McGuire, 42, of Rutland, Vt., were dropped. A charge of driving after revocation or suspension against McGuire was also dropped. He previously entered no plea and waived probable cause on felony charges of receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled drug, and drug/narcotic violations. A charge of willful concealment against Catherine Drouin, 36, of Milan, was placed on file without finding for one year on the condition of good behavior. She was also ordered to continue counseling and complete 40 hours of community service. She was also ordered not to enter Walmart unless accompanied by another adult.

“We have wanted to see this land conserved for a long time,” Savage said. “We’ve had it in mind for about a decade.” Among the 5,800 acres to be preserved is the Table Rock outlook, which offers a view across Coos County to Maine, Vermont and Canada, 30 miles of recreational trails — including a section of the Cohos Trail — wildlife habitat, extensive water resources including Mud Pond, healthy stands of sugar maple and areas of likely old growth forest, according to the SPNHF. Not included in the conservation effort is the ski area, golf course and land immediately surrounding the hotel. Savage explained that the group has a window of time to raise the funds and close on the agreement for the conservation rights. If they are successful, he said, the easements will exist on the land in perpetuity, preventing and commercial development including electricity transmission lines. The land in question had recently been looked at for a possible easement to allow the controversial proposed Northern Pass Transmission line to pass BALSAMS from page one

Hebert noted the Balsams’ last renovations occurred more than forty years ago, and much work needs to be done. “The resort is an extremely complex property and we want to take the proper steps to thoroughly assess what needs to be done. Once we determine necessary renovations, we will unveil our vision for the new Balsams Grand Resort, which will, once again, become a gem of New Hampshire’s North Country.” Hebert added, “We are committed to preserving the jobs of Balsams employees and the overall economic benefits that the hotel provides the North Country and the State. We recognize closing the hotel over an extended period for renovations will be difficult for employees, but it is absolutely necessary to ensure the resort’s long-term viability.” Hebert said Balsams View is committed to employing numerous North Country contractors and workers on

DEAR ABBY: After a bitter seven-year estrangement from his family, my husband received his grandfather’s eulogy in the mail. His father sent it with a note that read, “Here’s a copy of the eulogy I read at his funeral.” Abby, this was how his family notified him of his grandfather’s death -- two weeks after the fact. We had attempted several reconciliations with no success. A month later, my husband died at the age of 36 -- depressed and suffering from black lung disease. His family blames ME for his depression. Not a single relative of my husband’s attended his memorial service despite being given three weeks’ notice and my having mailed them formal invitations. My husband left a declaration in his will that his family should never know our child, whom they abandoned at 2 months old via a letter to us and my family. I feel I have been choking on their toxic behavior and venom. Do you have any advice as we move forward with our crosses after being abused by these narcissists for more than seven years? -- SAD AND BITTER WIDOW IN TENNESSEE DEAR SAD AND BITTER WIDOW: Yes. Put down those crosses and recognize that the anger and bitterness you feel will only poison yourself and your child. Obey your husband’s wishes and raise your child in a healthy emotional environment -- as far from your husband’s family as possible. Unless you do, the mistreatment to which you have been subjected will affect both your lives and you will waste what could be a happy future.
DEAR ABBY: I know some children who seem to be mature and are able to make logical decisions on a fairly regular basis. Still, making a decision under stress when one has not had a lot of experience can be difficult. Having said that, at what age do you think it is appropriate to leave a child alone at home? Sometimes it’s difficult to arrange for child care when kids are out of school. Do you have any guidelines as to what to look for that can help make this decision? -- BUSY WORKING PARENT IN KANSAS DEAR BUSY WORKING PARENT: I don’t think children should be left alone if there is any other alternative available -- after-school programs, YMCA, activities where they will have adult supervision. Too many things can go wrong, and you would never forgive yourself if one of them happened to your child. DEAR ABBY: How does one respond to a former co-worker/acquaintance who wants you to be a reference at your current workplace? My experience with him was not ideal. He was a good worker, but he became irritable when he was under stress and drowned everyone around him in negative energy. I don’t want to work with this individual again, but I prefer to be nonconfrontational. -- FORMER COLLEAGUE IN SUNNYVALE, CALIF. C O N WAY — Pitcher Jeff Locke, of the Pittsburgh Pirates, will hold his first ever meet and greet on Sunday, Dec. 18 with all proceeds going to the Friends of Conway Rec. Inc. and the Conway Parks and Recreation Department. Admission to the Meet and Greet is $10 to the first 100 people who pre-register for either of the two 90 minute sessions. Session I is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. while Session II runs from 10:30 to 12 noon. You must pre-register by Dec. 14 and tickets will be numbered based on the order you register. For those who pre-register you will receive an autographed 5X7 photograph of Locke pitching for the Pirates; you’ll also take part in a 30 minute question and answer session with The Redstone Rocket; and all children 16 and under, who are pre-registered by THE CONWAY DAILY SUN

Arnold said Old Town has the capacity to meet the increased demand as well as serve its other customers. Both plants are owned by Patriarch Partners and Arnold said CEO Lynn Tilton likes to see vertical integration within her companies. The company is already reaping the savings from converting its boiler from No.6 fuel oil to natural gas this fall. Arnold said next spring he expects the gas line from the Androscoggin Valley Regional Refuse Disposal District Mount Carberry landfill will be installed and the mill will also burn its methane gas. He said the methane gas will be a nice addition to the mill’s efforts to be environmentally friendly. Plant Manager Willis Blevins said the No. 9 towel machine is continuing to run steady and No. 4 is back up after a two-day shut down. Before the shutdown, he said No. 4 had run for 25 days. Tilton yesterday was the keynote speaker at the New Hampshire Advanced Manufacturing and High Technology Summit in Manchester. She spoke on “How to Save American Manufacturing”

Arnold said the Italian company, ABK Italia, manufactured the 100-ton per day machine. The estimated cost of the project is in the $35 million range. Bancroft Construction Company of South Paris, Maine has been hired to install the machine and Arnold said site and demolition work is underway. He said Gorham Paper and Tissue is not allowed to start construction until it obtains an air permit from the N.H. Department of Environmental Services. Arnold said DES officials have indicated they are confident the permit will be issued in mid-December. The mill also needs a building permit from the town of Gorham. The tissue machine will produce tissue paper, paper towels, and napkins but Arnold said the mill will focus on bath tissue sold on the private label market. He said the company is already talking to potential customers. Tissue production is not new to the Gorham mill. Arnold noted they use to produce tissue on the old No. 10 machine before it was removed. Arnold said the tissue machine will be a nice complement to the No. 9 towel machine, which produces towels for the away-from-home travel market. He said the towel market tends to be somewhat seasonal while tissue is designed for every day use. A variety of prod-

Writer’s Night Out Group debuts its first book Sat. Writer’s Night Out Group
BERLIN -- Fourteen members of the North Country Writers’ Night Out Group have contributed works to a book that will be available for sale at this Saturday’s Holiday Festival at Northern Forest Heritage Park. Called “Seasonal Selections from North Country Writers’ Night Out,” the attractive light blue-covered book contains 28 works of poetry and prose, and eight illustrations, seven by Susan Becker and one by Esther Leiper. Contributing authors are Cimbria Badenhausen, Dick Conway, Jonathan Dubey, Patricia Faucher, Clover Koopman, David Taylor Moore, Esther Leiper, Ron Roy, Susan Howard Solar, Ellen Torrey, Dawn Tupick, Lisa Wheeler, and S.
