Columbia man killed in N. Stratford accident

NORTH STRATFORD -- Daniel Ward, 18, of Columbia, was killed in a motor vehicle accident on Route 3 in North Stratford on June 8. According to a state police report, the accident was reported at approximately 1:13 p.m. by a 911 caller. Responding agencies discovered that a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt had been traveling northbound on Route 3 and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle then rolled over several times, causing Ward to be ejected. He received traumatic type injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, the report said. No other occupants were in the vehicle. Responding agencies included the Stratford Hollow FIre Department, Groveton Ambulance, Stratford Police Department, Northumberland Police Department, Colebrook Police Department, NH Department of Transportation, NH Medical Examiners Office, and the New Hampshire State Police. The initial investigation suggests that the cause of the accident was excessive speed, but remains under further investigation by Tr. Christopher Ladd of Troop-F in Twin Mountain.

CONCORD — Lawmakers are still crafting the state budget, but regardless of what the final numbers come out to there will likely be little money to begin building the Conway bypass. “There are a lot of different numbers out there, most of which cut us,” said Bill Boynton, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation. The department listed the bypass, which would route traffic along Route 16 around the villages on Conway and North Conway, among the projects that would likely have to be cut from the state’s 10-year plan if the department was cut as legislators were proposing earlier his spring. The list wasn’t set in stone, but the department said it would focus on maintaining existing infrastructure over building new proj-

ects. The Conway project is slated to be built in three sections, only the first of which, the southern section, is scheduled begin in the next decade. The DOT 10-year plan has the southern portion of the Conway bypass scheduled for 2015. It would route traffic around Conway Village to Redstone, take five years to build and cost $66 million. Money has not been set aside for the project. Now, as the state budget gets close to finalization, the cuts the DOT warned about earlier this year look like they may become a reality. “There’s been no talk anywhere of additional revenue,” Boynton said. The House and Senate have differing numbers for the department, but they are both more see BYPASS page 8

Community forum on impact of state budget today BERLIN -- The Androscoggin Valley Community Providers (AVCP) will host a community forum on Fri., June 17, at 10: a.m. to discuss what impact the currently proposed New Hampshire House and Senate budgets will have on Coos County residents and the potential rise in property taxes to cover financial deficits. AVCP invites the Coos County delegation, human service agencies, town and city representatives, community board members and all concerned citizens to attend this open forum to plan and discuss the future of Coos County. The event will be held at St. Barnabas Church, 2 High Street (corner of Main and High Streets). For further information please contact Rev. Fran Gardner-Smith at 752-3504.

Thanks to many local businessmen, BHS senior welding student, Brice Corrigan and teacher Oscar Carrier will be attending the Skills USA National Conference that is being held in Kansas City Missouri. Local businessmen have contributed monies to help with expenses for the trip such as airfare and lodging. In order to participate in the National Conference Corrigan had to be a state champ in the welding category. He will be participating in five different projects as well as a written exam. This is the fourth year Berlin High School has sent someone to the national conference. Last year BHS placed 10th out of 50 states. A fight over Frank’s fallen tree

AMSTERDAM (NY Times) — From the window in the attic of her family’s hiding place in Amsterdam, Anne Frank could see the crown of an old chestnut tree growing in a neighbor’s garden. For two years, it was her only contact with nature. The tree is gone now, having fallen during a storm in August, but its memory lives on — not in the diary but in a nasty dispute over its remains. Board members of the Support Anne Frank Tree foundation, the group responsible for the tree, are incensed with the contractor they hired to build a metal brace meant to extend the sick tree’s life. They accuse him of botching the job and killing the tree, and then stealing the tree’s remains and leaving them to rot instead of distributing them to the Jewish museums and other institutions around the world that would like to have them. Perhaps inevitably, given the context and the hard feelings the matter has stirred, they have also accused him of acting like a Nazi. The tree, which was more than 150 years old and suffering from a fungal infection, was supposed to be felled several years ago. But a group of neighbors and arborists protested the city’s decision. “This tree was a monument of hope,” said Helga Fassbinder, a member of the foundation board and a retired university professor whose house overlooked the tree.

Gingrich’s senior campaign staff resigns

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– WORLD/NATION–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

(NY Times) — Newt Gingrich’s campaign manager and a half-dozen senior advisers resigned on Thursday, two aides said, dealing a significant setback to his bid for the Republican presidential nomination and severely complicating his hopes for a political comeback. Mr. Gingrich’s campaign manager, Rob Johnson, his longtime spokesman, Rick Tyler, and advisers in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina stepped down together

after a period of deep internal disagreements about the direction of the campaign. Mr. Gingrich, a former House speaker who has been fighting to regain his political footing after a rough campaign roll-out last month, had been absent from the campaign trail for about two weeks on what aides had described as a long-planned vacation. He made his return on Wednesday in New Hampshire, a day before the resignations were announced.

In a statement on his Facebook page Thursday afternoon, Mr. Gingrich said he would not abandon his presidential campaign. He said that his next public appearance would be this week in California at an event sponsored by the Republican Jewish Coalition. “I am committed to running the substantive, solutions-oriented campaign I set out to run earlier this spring,” Mr. Gingrich wrote. “The campaign begins anew Sunday in Los Angeles.”

Anticipating crackdown, Vast wildfire in Arizona more Syrians flee to Turkey threatens electrical grid KARBEYAZ, Turkey (NY Times) — Hundreds more Syrians fled into Turkey on Thursday, anticipating a widening crackdown against pro-democracy demonstrators in the country’s northwest, which has become the newest center of weeks of protests against the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The influx of people across their border have prompted Turkish authorities to set up three camps for the refugees, while they reassured frightened Syrians that

they would keep the border open and called once again on the Syrian government to allow peaceful demonstrations and to carry out reforms. More than 2,500 Syrians had now crossed into Turkey since the unrest began there in March, the Turkish foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, said Thursday. Fearing a new wave of violence, more than 1,050 Syrians had crossed over since Wednesday, Turkey’s semiofficial Anatolian News Agency reported.

SPRINGERVILLE, Ariz. (NY Times) — A vast wildfire continued to surge unchecked across eastern Arizona on Thursday, prompting thousands more people to flee their homes. The fire jumped past firefighters’ containment lines on Wednesday to reach the edges of residential areas, and more evacuation orders were issued. Springerville, with about 2,000 residents, was the largest town to be emptied so far. The fire is also threatening key electrical transmission lines that, if severed, could affect electricity to hundreds of thousands of customers in the region. Mike Duvall, New Mexico’s secretary for homeland security and emergency management, was in the town of Reserve near the Arizona border, where Gov. Susana Martinez had marshaled 145 members of the National Guard to assist firefighting efforts.

Thank you for all your help and caring To the editor: Hi everyone, I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to everyone who stood by my son (Robert Michael AndersonChapman) - “Buddy” and our family during this past week. I want to thank you for all of your prayers and also those of you who went out of your way to lend a hand from both near and far, in so many ways when it was needed the most. Some of you may not be aware my son was in a very severe motorcycle accident and was airlifted to Dart-

mouth on Saturday of Memorial weekend. He spent several days in intensive care, etc. He is doing better now, however, he will have a long healing period. I don’t want to get into details of his injuries but he has many. I just wanted you all to know how much you all mean to us and how much your prayers, etc., helped. He will bounce back with help from everyone. He has a hard head like his mom. Thank You: We love you all! Sherry L. Anderson Berlin

Thanks for supporting CBA bike-a-thon To the editor: We would like to express our sincere thanks to our community for supporting Community Bible Academy in the Amy Howry Memorial Bike-A-Thon. We especially want to thank our students for their dedication and hard work in riding for their sponsors despite the rain. We were overwhelmed with support from local businesses and would like to express this appreciation by listing each one of them: Route 12V, Gorham Hardware, Tractor Supply, Sherwin Williams, North Country Dental, NAPA, Greetings Jewelers, Colorworks, Androscoggin Surgical Association, Coos County Chiropractic, Coos Eye Care, The Beauty Room, Sears, Jackson’s General, Maureen’s, Aubuchon’s, Sylvia Charest, Air Gas, Town & Country, Gills Flowers, Pizza Hut, Gorham House Florist, Subway, White

The donations given by these businesses were huge in making our day a success. We encourage our area families to shop local and support businesses that give back to our community in so many ways. We would also like to thank the CBA school family for the tremendous support you continue to give in so many ways that allows private Christian education to continue in the Berlin-Gorham area. Enjoying The Day

The writing prompt for this past Saturday was simple enough: Write a list of the 10 things you enjoyed most about today. Challenges such as this one are among my favorites; so, sitting at the desk in our motel room in Nashua this past Saturday evening, I began making some notes. (Feel free to make your own list of what you most enjoyed about the day. Don’t be bound by a number. If you list is more than ten, fine. If it is less, that’s fine, too. Mine is only seven.) My list begins with the simple act of waking up on the right side of the grass. It certainly beats the alternative. Any day that I open my eyes, swing my legs out of bed, stand up and walk to the bathroom is a good day in my book. Simple actions, perhaps, but ones that seem to me to be always a cause for celebration. Just being able to do them beats the alternative. Taking in the view from our house in Milan is one of the joys of any day. Standing this morning on the knoll on which our house sits and looking out across the Androscoggin River, past the farm that lies just on the other side of the river, and on to the dawn-bedecked mountain range beyond reminds me of the vista that must have inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write “America, the Beautiful.” Our vista hardly compares with the one from Pike’s Peak, I don’t suppose. But it stirs the same emotions. My wife and I are driving down to Natick, Massachusetts, today, for I have a voice coaching session with my teacher and friend, Susie Kuzma. Our first stop, however, will be at the Water Wheel Breakfast and Gift House, in Jefferson. For my money, the best ham and cheese omelets in the world are made there, and stopping there for breakfast makes for one of the joys of any day. Until one gets to Concord, the drive from Jefferson, over Route 115, to Twin Mountain, through Twin Mountain to Franconia Notch, through the Notch and down the upper part of Interstate 93 is one of the most scenic drives New Hampshire has to offer, I think. Green, symbol of freshness, rebirth and renewal, is my most favorite color, and on this vibrant Saturday morning, Nature seems to have used an

especially generous paintbrush. Driving down 93, it is easy to forget that I am on an Interstate highway. It seems more like a leisurely walk through a lovingly and carefully tended arboretum. Let others zoom-zoom-zoom on by me, I am content to stay in the right-hand lane and allow myself time to absorb the everchanging vistas through which we are passing. The blue sky above – at least, what I can see of it through the windows of our car – is, at first, almost cloudless. There are only a few wisps of white to be seen, although one of the larger ones looks for all the world like some fantastically made insect. As we near Concord, though, the clouds become more numerous, as if a giant box of cotton has exploded and populated the blue sky with cotton candy. I am now at Susie’s house in Natick. The next hour will be pure joy. Her living room, dominated by a six-foot long Steinway baby grand, serves as her studio. We move quickly through the vocal warm-ups and get down to the business of deciding what I will sing for her program in August. We try out two operatic arias that I haven’t sung in years. But, astoundingly, it is as if I had never stopped. The years seem to fall away, and the voice sounds as if it had never aged. Yes, these are the arias I will sing. Beautifully crafted soaring melodies and words. Pure joy! Back in Nashua, we check into our motel. An hour or so later, we are at the Tokyo Japanese Steak House, our favorite place to dine. I order my usual: Number 11, The Mikado, a combination of chicken and steak, and, of course, the house fried rice, a specialty. Barrie has ordered a Blue Hawaii, and I have ordered a Planter’s Punch. We touch glasses in recognition of our 48th wedding anniversary, and settle back to watch the chef work his magic with the flying fork and spatula, as he prepares our meal right in front of us. So, there’s my list. Seven in number. Today, Wednesday, the day I am writing this has started off well, too. Maybe I’ll try doing another list tonight. How about you? Duke’s comeback concert to benefit local teens

BERLIN -- Music lovers of all ages will be lining up at the gates of the Northern Forest Heritage Park at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, to witness the “come-back” of a local favorite. That’s right. The boys are back in town! “Duke” is a group of local musicians who have taken a break from the local music scene for the past two years so that they could enjoy more personal time and concentrate on their families. When they were playing locally, fans and followers usually filled all available seats, creating a standing-roomonly crowd. Numerous Facebook entries confirm the fact that there is still a large following for this talented group of musicians. Their contemporary-rock style and wellwritten, original tunes appeal to young and old alike. All proceeds from the upcoming concert will go to benefit the Berlin Teen Center, a Tri-County CAP program that is struggling to continue to serve area youth despite budget cuts. When asked why the members of Duke decided that their “come-back” concert would be a fundraiser, Cliff Scott, bass-player and vocalist for the band, was happy to share their story. “We saw a flyer that some teenagers had posted downtown. It asked for help, funds and suggestions to help save the Berlin

Teen Center. When this band was formed back in 2006, we were all 18 to 20 years old and our rehearsal space was the church hall at St. Barnabas; the same space that the Teen Center now occupies. The people of St. Barnabas gave us a place to rehearse when we had no other. We spent many hours there each week and we want to see it continue to serve local teenagers. I think the Teen Center is a great place for kids to go after school to interact with each other outside the school setting. Even though our music isn’t geared strictly to the younger generation, we enjoy playing concerts outdoors and at other venues where teenagers are able to attend. We’ve worked hard to become the band that we are today and we hope to be positive role models for these kids.” Duke band members include Cliff Scott, Brad Wallace, Ryan Larochelle, Andrew Larochelle and new addition, David Dean. Come on down to the Northern Forest Heritage Park on the 19th and bring some friends. There will be vendors selling hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, ice cream, popcorn and other good things. Admission is $5 per person and gates open at 5 p.m. Music will begin at 5:30 with special guest, Tim Dion, opening for Duke. Don’t miss this fun night of music in the great outdoors.

Berlin Station clarifies Laidlaw connection PORTSMOUTH, NH –In light of the U.S. SEC order halting trading of Laidlaw Energy Group’s microcap or penny stock, Berlin Station has issued a clarification of Laidlaw’s involvement with the proposed Berlin biomass plant. It reads as follows: “Berlin Station, an affiliate of NewCo Energy, the owner and developer of the Berlin Biopower project, has clarified Laidlaw Energy Group’s involvement with the proposed biomass power plant. Berlin Station spokesperson Richard Cyr said, ìLaidlaw Energy Group, through its affiliate Laidlaw Biopower, LLC (ìLaidlawî), was the developer of the Berlin Biopower project from its inception in late 2006 through the unanimous approval by the Site Evaluation Committee in September 2010. In September 2010,

Laidlaw and Newco Energy, LLC, reached an agreement whereby Laidlaw sold its equity interest to Newco in consideration for a cash payment at that time and a subsequent payment upon the completion of the construction loan closing. Accordingly, Laidlaw Energy Group has no current equity ownership interest in the Berlin Biopower project. Newco Energy, LLC formed Berlin Station to advance the financing of the Berlin BioPower project and is working to secure the project’s final approvals.” The Securities and Exchange Commission temporarily halted trading in 17 microcap stock because of concerns over the adequacy and accuracy of publicly available information about the companies which trade in the over-the-counter market.

than $100 million below the department’s request. The DOT is already working on contingency plans for its operations, Boynton said. Starting July 1, the DOT is going to stop mowing and tree trimming to preserve maintenance funds for the winter season. “We’re anticipating a tough two years,” he said. And it may get tougher. The DOT could lose nearly a third of the money it gets from the federal government for capital projects — $40 million — although that funding is also up in the air. If that happens, Boynton said,

“that’s kind of a double-whammy.” Boynton didn’t know if the DOT will release a final list of cut projects after the budget is finalized, but if there is a new list it “probably it won’t look a lot different than the one that’s already out there,” he said. “We’re going to prioritize, no question,” he said, reiterating the department’s commitment to established infrastructure. The DOT will have another chance to discuss the future again in the fall, however, when the 10-year plan is revisited, which is done every two years. “The process continues,” Boynton said.

By Holiday Mathis SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Your number is eight because you are the eighth sign of the zodiac. When eight is placed on its side, it becomes the symbol for infinity. You’ll get a profound sense of the infinity of your own essence today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). A deal you recently made may prove to be more effort than it was worth. Though you may not want to do another deal like this in the future, you wish those involved only blue skies, bird songs and happiness. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Standards of beauty change with time, culture and location. Therefore, the world is not a dependable judge of your true attractiveness. Let your attractive quotient be self-determined. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You use various ingredients to turn out a good product. The ingredient you will deal with today is a little like salad dressing in that it is easy to dress a salad and nearly impossible to undress it. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You sense that it’s sometimes appropriate, even crucial, to give until it hurts. And though that’s true, it’s not always true. For instance, right now it’s best to give comfortably and let others contribute in the same spirit. TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (June 10). You’ll feel free. The wind fills your sail, and you go where your heart desires. A special relationship gains lovely momentum. In July, you earn extra money here and there, and the spare change adds up to a wonderful purchase. Take a professional leap in August. You’ll put a feather in your cap in November. Capricorn and Libra people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 30, 1, 24, 39 and 14.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Remember the thing you want that you cannot achieve alone. You will have the cooperation of your peers, especially if you are able to give them clear directions about what to do next. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You made a hasty decision in the past and will not repeat the mistake this time around. Go slow and think things through. Most importantly, if you don’t feel it completely, do nothing. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’ll be the center of the excitement. Because of your energetic, daring mood, you are prone to surprises. Your unpredictable behavior is what keeps people on their toes around you. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You may find that you are stuck, and no matter how hard you push, you cannot seem to get unstuck. The solution: Stop pushing. Give to others from this stuck place. Your generosity will free you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You like to go under the radar at times, taking a break from being constantly “on.” Besides, right now there’s a friend or partner who needs attention, and you don’t want to steal this person’s spotlight. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You honor your talent by keeping track of your work. Develop a system of management that makes it easy to access your ideas and finished products. Your current system may be adequate, but you deserve better. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). A friend asks for your time and does not want or need your money. But this person might not completely understand how valuable your time really is. Set some limits in your own mind, and then enjoy the hours you have together.

WOMAN’S HELPING HAND AT WORK COMES ACROSS AS INTERFERENCE

DEAR ABBY: It has recently come to my attention that at work I am considered “bossy.” It came as a shock to me. I’m hurt that my co-workers and department manager think of me this way. I know I come on strong sometimes when it comes to helping customers, but I view it as helping. When I suggest to co-workers that they keep their areas clean and orderly, it is perceived as bossy. I’m just trying to help them not get fired for slacking off. I’m older than some of my co-workers and my manager. I tried for the manager position, and was initially angry when someone else got it. But now I see she does a good job, and I respect her. It seems, however, that my actions have sent the wrong message. What can I do to mend fences? Or, should I just forget about it and look for something else? -- MISJUDGED IN ALBUQUERQUE DEAR MISJUDGED: No, you should apologize to anyone you might have offended. And, as well-intentioned as you are, in the future resist the urge to correct your fellow employees. Your job is to be part of a team, not a scolding schoolmarm. Sometimes it’s how you say something, not necessarily what was said, that’s the problem. DEAR ABBY: My daughter, “Alana,” has a 7-year-old son my husband and I have helped to raise while she got her life together and pursued her lucrative career. “Tristan” excels in school and is a great little man. The problem is, every time Alana gets a new boyfriend, she rushes to make the boyfriend Tristan’s “daddy.” The men my daughter chooses are crude, rude and, without fail, feel a need to “straighten out” Tristan. My grandson

does not need straightening out because he is polite, engaging and a good soul. The newest guy in Alana’s life, “Jeff,” told me point blank that if Alana doesn’t stop babying her son, Tristan will grow up to be a girl! This man is homophobic, sexist, racist and controlling. Alana claims she’s “in love” and fails to see the potential harm this guy could inflict on Tristan. We do not employ corporal punishment, but Jeff has already said (several times) he would “beat his butt”! What should we do? -- FEARFUL NANA IN GEORGIA DEAR NANA: Where is your daughter meeting these people? It appears her taste in men is atrocious, and she has serious self-esteem issues. You and your husband need to get across to her how harmful it is for her to repeatedly introduce men to her son as “daddies.” Parents should wait until they know their prospective mates well enough to be assured they won’t injure the child physically or psychologically. If Alana insists on marrying Jeff, offer to take Tristan to live with you. If that’s not acceptable, the next time Jeff says he’ll “beat Tristan’s butt” respond point blank that if he lays a hand on your grandson, you’ll report him to Child Protective Services. You could also point out to your daughter that now that she has her life together and a “lucrative career,” the last thing she would need is a scandal because she tolerated such a thing happening to her son. And while you’re at it, make it plain that trying to “toughen up” a 7-year-old the way this man is suggesting would not only be counterproductive, it could damage him in ways she can’t imagine.
