YOUR GUIDE TO FALL CAREER SERVICES By Andy Thomason Staff writer

With seniors worrying about the slumping national economy and a double-digit N.C. unemployment rate, this year’s Fall Career Expo is providing another cause for concern. On Sept. 17, the number of employers at the Career Expo will be down about 30 or 40 percent from last year, said Jeff Sackaroff, associate director of University Career Services. But the annual Career Expo, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Smith Center, will still offer students and employers opportunities to make connections. Some seniors said they are concerned about this year’s decrease in employers. “I’m nervous and I don’t really know if there are a whole lot of options,” said senior Salem Gregory, a psychology and Spanish double major. Sackaroff said about 75 employers have signed up to attend this year’s event. Last year, about 130 employers attended. In addition to the struggling economy, Sackaroff said he attributes the decrease to the beleaguered investment-banking industry, which has traditionally had a large recruiting presence at the University. “Unfortunately, a bunch of those banks don’t exist anymore,” he said.

Attracting more students Sackaroff said he prefers not to focus on the lack of employers. Instead, he said the focus for Career Services has always been on attracting more student interest for the Career Expo. “Our challenge has always been getting the students to come, even in the good years,” he said. Sackaroff said he expects between 800 and 1,000 students to attend this year’s event, a disappointing number considering the size of the student body. “I don’t think students appreciate the value of this type of event and how rare these are to have this many employers in one building,” he said. Sackaroff said attendance has been sparse in the past due to students’ misconceptions of the types of employers present. “Sometimes students make the miscalculation that it’s just for business students when nothing could be further from the truth,” he said. “The majority of our employers aren’t interested in any particular major per se. They just want students that have skills.”

Use social networking sites to polish your online profile By tarini parti

assistant state and national editor

Social networking Web sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are becoming increasingly useful not only in staying connected with friends, but also in promoting job skills and exploring career options. Gary Allan Miller, University Career Services assistant director, said students should figure out which medium works best for them and establish an online presence, which could help them in securing a job in the future. Miller said about 80 percent of hiring managers are using social mediums to screen job applicants. At a time when jobs are difficult to find, students

should do their best to take advantage of socialnetworking Web sites, he said. He has been trying to educate students through a workshop titled “Personal branding, new media and you career,” and through 12-minute instructional videos he posts on his Twitter account, Miller said. “The aim is to help them find a platform that makes sense for them,” he said. Miller added that it’s possible none of these three mediums work for a student. “It all depends on the student’s interest. If you’re in a visual career, maybe you need to be on YouTube,” he said. “Students have to explore the range of possibilities that are out there.”

It is hard to use Facebook strictly for professional use, Miller said. Hiring managers rarely check the Web site to look for applicants’ job skills, but they do check profiles and pictures to know more about the applicant. Pictures that show underage drinking and other inappropriate behavior could be damaging to one’s chances of getting a job. “If they find nothing, they find nothing, but if they find something, why not make it a positive thing?” he asked.

Miller said most students are suspicious of using Twitter professionally. “They think of it as a Facebook update, which it’s not, and then they see the celebrity junk and don’t think it’s professional,” he said. Miller said students can market their job skills in a quick and easy way using Twitter. He said he has been doing the same thing in promoting UCS by tweeting tips for students and developing a base of 400 followers, most of which are UNC students.

Miller said that LinkedIn is probably the best for marketing and exploring careers and that students need to find the Web site’s “hidden gems.” Students can find career-related groups, discuss issues and search for jobs and internships. “Usually people set up a profile and that’s all they do. There’s a whole section of useful groups that people miss,” he said. “No matter how nichey your career path, you can find a group connected to do that.”

TV program highlights people who follow their dreams By Ross Maloney Staff Writer

PBS’s “Roadtrip Nation” will make a pit stop at UNC-Chapel Hill on Friday, Oct. 16. The show, beginning its sixth season, is including UNC-CH on its fall tour along with other East Coast universities. The premise of the series is to inspire college-age students to pursue their passions and talents. “As a generation, we need to need to get back to focusing on individuality. Self-construction rather than mass production,” the show’s online manifesto proclaims. Central also is the notion of weeding out what they refer to as “the noise.”

“‘The noise’ is friends, family members and society that act as pressures to conform to a certain set path,” said Lauren Ho, the show’s national events director. Ho is one of the eight roadies who will be coming to North Carolina. She said the main mission of the tour is to provide outreach, inspire and mobilize America’s college youth. “Face-to-face interactions with our target audience (college-aged students) is our greatest reach to encourage students to check out our Web site, apply for road trips and help us spread the word,” Ho said. This recruiting aspect of the tour is the main way Roadtrip Nation gets new roadies and more campuses involved.

In its previous five seasons, Roadtrip Nation has covered all four corners of the United States and has extended itself internationally to six continents — in countries such as Uganda, Australia, New Zealand and England — through its Independent Roadtrip Grant Program. The roadies themselves share certain similarities, though the selection process varies each year. All roadies are early- to mid-20s and are often alumni from previous seasons. The fall roadies are from The University of California at Davis, The University of California at Irvine, Montana State University, Northland College, Miami University (Ohio), and

The University of Georgia. They have majored in communication, journalism, English, studio art, economics and marketing, among others. Four roadies will be coming to UNC. More information — along with pictures, videos and the rest of the manifesto — is available at the show’s Web site, www.roadtripnation.com. Courtesy of PBS

UCS programs build skills Choosing your career is a process By Amanda Ruehlen and alana prettitore Staff Writers

University Career Services offers a variety of programs that allow students to develop professional skills. Career Peers and a certification program give students skills to take ownership of their career searches.

Career Peers UCS is aiming to better serve the student body’s needs by forming an umbrella program over two existing ones — the Student Advisory Board and the Student Ambassadors. The program, called Career Peers, works to bring in students to promote and help UCS. Student Ambassadors program coordinator Amanda Williams said that while she’s unsure of how the combination will work, it can only make them stronger. The programs will continue to operate separately, only now they will have a joint recruitment and training process. Williams said combining the programs will increase student involvement, reach out to students and build personal career development skills while making both groups feel more like a part of UCS. The Student Ambassadors help promote UCS services, while the

Advisory Board provides student input into career services. The 17 ambassadors talk about career services in residence halls and help at events such as career fairs registering students to get e-mails about upcoming UCS programs. The 16 student advisers discuss concerns with UCS regarding career development and job searches. This year, the advisers are working to redesign the Web site and to address the needs of international students. Both programs have representatives from a variety of majors, ages and backgrounds. Student Advisory Board Chairman Corey Harris said the program plays a crucial role. “Without SAB, UCS will gradually lose its relevance with prospective employers, which in turn will leave the student body with fewer job opportunities,” Harris said. Advisory board coordinator Jacquie Gist said she has noticed that UCS has students’ attention now more than ever, highlighting the need for Career Peers. “They are able to help us reach the student body and help us particularly in these tough economic times when career issues are challenging,” she said. The application process for Career Peers starts in the spring.

Certificate Students can plunge into their careers and enhance their resumes by earning a Certificate in Career Development with UCS. The program helps students with career planning and offers networking and training opportunities. In its third year, the program has already implemented student suggestions, now letting students earn their certificates in one year instead of two and complete new modules. “ The CDC program really serves to prepare students for life after Carolina, and it is really designed to give them a leg up,” said Sue Harbour, assistant director for career exploration at Career Services. Last year, 350 students enrolled in the program, but only 26 received certificates, Harbour said. This year, UCS added features to improve continuity and retention. So far, 75 students have enrolled. Jeff Sackaroff, associate director of UCS, said the certificate curriculum also caters to students from all majors and backgrounds. When students graduate, particularly in a time of limited jobs and increased competition, Harbour said they can feel more at ease. “Going through a program like this shows your dedication to your career development,” she said.

P

op quiz: What are the most important skills that employers look for when recruiting new hires for jobs and internships? Organizational? Problem-solving? Teamwork? All good guesses, but research shows that the most crucial quality employers look for in new hires is actually communication skills. This is important information for the many students who utilize University Career Services programs and services to help translate academic experiences into viable skill sets on their resumes. It may surprise some to know that the overwhelming majority of employers who recruit UNC students tend to focus less on major and more on the transferable skills that the candidate has to offer. Employers are looking for bright, motivated, competent graduates who have demonstrated success in and out of the classroom. This is why experiences such as internships, leadership positions, volunteer experiences and studying abroad can all have significant impact on your career aspirations. I work with 16 different liberal arts majors, and the most common comment I hear from students is that they don’t know what they want to do after they graduate.

Show work today, have samples tomorrow By Katy Doll Arts Editor

Taking your work from the studio or the stage to the rest of the world can be daunting. But by making moves now, students will have a leg-up after graduation. Laura Ritchie, a senior studio art major with an emphasis in art history, was having just such a thought last year. “It got to be my junior year and I realized I wasn’t really involved in the arts at all,” she said. So she went to the Ackland Art Museum and the Carrboro ArtsCenter and asked if they needed volunteers. “With the ArtsCenter, I started as a volunteer and gradually took on more responsibilities,” Ritchie said. This summer she took on some of the gallery coordinator responsibilities and was offered the position this fall. These opportunities are avail-

able, but students need to make moves to establish them now. Emily Strader, the arts and parttime job specialist at University Career Services, said the important task is building a resume by getting experience now. Students should participate in as many performances or exhibits as possible, she said. Internships are another option, as experience in the field adds to a student’s skill set. Artists do not always know how to promote their work and real-world experience can teach this, said Robert Kintz, student services official for the department of art. “School is the time and place for developing technique and for understanding how to make your ideas come alive in your art,” Kintz stated in an e-mail. “But great ideas and wonderful technique are less valuable if you do not know what to do with them

after graduation.” Laura Lane, UCS assistant director, echoed a similar sentiment. “All students try to get good grades, but it’s really these complementary experiences that are going to shape the resume,” she said. Many internships are unpaid and in a distant city, requiring students to pay for housing and food. Strader said students might need to work part-time jobs during the year to financially handle an unpaid internship. Finding a way to think outside the box and make cross-industry connections is important, she said. “Every industry right now during these tough economic times is looking for ways to be creative,” she said. “With the arts, we’re used to being creative, so this won’t be anything new for artists.”

Time Off: The Advisor

Time Off: The Graduate

Jacquie Gist is a career counselor with University Career Services.

Julie Turkewitz is a 2008 UNC graduate who spent a year living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She worked as a Spanish programs coordinator at a language institute. She is now living in her hometown, Bethesda, Md.

What are the most common reasons you hear for taking time off? Many don’t know yet what they want to do or want to have an adventure while they are free of obligations. Some want to add to their “marketable experience.” Others want to make a lasting contribution to the community and the world. Sometimes students are just burnt out because they’ve been in school since they were five and they’ve worked or interned almost every summer of their college years.

What are the most common things for people to do? Most students choose an organized program, such as Teach for America. However, some find employment on their own doing things as unusual as working on a dude ranch, teaching at a school in the Palestinian territories or working as a ranger in a national park. Many people are looking to do a career, even if it’s short-term, that they love. UCS considers this its job — to help people discover career options they love. Sometimes people look at time off as a chance to explore nontraditional career areas.

What is your advice for students considering taking time off? Start thinking about your options very early and research them well. Sit down with a counselor and talk about what your long-term plans are and how your options fit in with those plans. There’s a good chance your parents are going to go, “You’re what?” The more you’ve thought things through, the better your experience will be and the more your friends and family will support you.

What prompted you to do this? After studying abroad in Spain my junior year, I knew I wanted to live abroad again. A friend who had lived abroad for five years really encouraged the idea, and once I saw how things were going in the journalism industry, I knew this was the ideal time to do it. I didn’t really look for jobs, but when I was offered one, my immediate reaction was “I don’t want to do this.” What was your goal? I intended to go down to Argentina for six months, find a job and dedicate myself to learning Spanish. I had no real grand scheme. My goal was to get outside my box — I wanted something exciting and different. I wanted to enrich myself through personal journalism. I was always writing and photographing, but I didn’t think I could tell people what was going on in the world unless I knew what was going on.

What is your advice for students considering taking time off? Do it. Take risks. Don’t be afraid to get outside your box. Don’t be afraid to be uncomfortable. Don’t be afraid to be alone. Don’t be afraid to get to know yourself better and get to know the world better. I initially had some friends from UNC there with me, but we eventually split up. That’s when I met some of the people who had the greatest impact on me. Loneliness propels you into having new experiences. Interviews by State and National Editor Ariel Zirulnick

So you’re thinking about going to graduate school ... UCS will host a panel series for students considering law, business or medical school at UNC. Below is some information about the admissions process for each.

4 p.m. Oct. 13, 239B Hanes Hall Representatives of UNC’s School of Medicine admissions department said the school seeks applicants whose personal goals mirror its own. The school requires applicants to submit MCAT scores and recommendation letters and undergo an interview process. The school typically receives about 4,000 applications for 160 spots. The applications are submitted to the American Medical College Application Service. Additional application materials are sent to those who qualify for an interview. Admissions deadlines include an Aug. 1 early decision deadline and a Nov. 15 deadline for regular applications. The admissions office seeks potential applicants who have not only shown good test scores, but also perseverance in overcoming adversity in their lives and a commitment to medicine in North Carolina. Dr. Robert Bashford, dean of admissions, said the school looks for applicants

4 p.m. Oct. 20, 239B Hanes Hall The Kenan-Flagler Business School admissions department says it is focused on an applicant’s real-world experience. Applicants must have a minimum of two years working experience, but most applicants have an average of five. They are also required to submit GMAT scores, six essays and two recommendations, and they must have an interview. The admissions process consists of four rounds. The first, the early action deadline on Oct. 23, allows applicants to know their decision by Dec. 14. This process is non-binding, but the deposit is $2,500, rather than the normal $1,000. The remaining three deadlines are Dec. 4, Jan. 8 and March 19. Sherry Wallace, director of admissions for the MBA program, said applicants don’t have to have a business degree or business-related work experience. She said that the admissions department looks for applicants with leadership and academic excellence but that success in the real world is equally important.

4 p.m. Oct. 27, 239B Hanes Hall Each year 3,000 applicants apply for 250 spots in the UNC School of Law. The application process consists of various requirements as well as personal qualities the school looks for in applicants. The school requires applicants to provide LSAT scores, a personal statement, a resume and two to three letters of recommendation. The application fee is $70, but Peace Corps and Teach For America students and applicants with financial hardship can apply to have the fee waived. The admissions office begins taking applications Oct. 1. The deadline is March 1. Applicants will be informed of the school’s decision by May 1. Jennifer Kott, director of admissions for the law school, said the admissions department is looking for gifted, wellrounded students who are involved in their communities. She explained that the best way to demonstrate personal qualities is through the personal statement. The three- to five-

The school does accept out-of-state applications, but typically only 20 applicants are taken each year. The economy hasn’t affected the number of applications, but the number of declinations — accepted students declining to attend the school — has declined. Bashford credited this to the lower admission price of the UNC medical school relative to others.

Kenan-Flagler Business School New to the application process is the reduction of interviews to invitation-only. Wallace said it helps avoid using time and energy to interview unqualified applicants. Also new is the addition of student-read essays. Current second-year MBA students read one of the required essays, which adds a fresh perspective, Wallace said. She said budget cuts haven’t affected admissions staff or recruiting, but there has been a decline in applications in the past year. Even so, the school enrolled their largest class this past year.

UNC School of Law page personal statement asks applicants to series of questions that show an applicant’s qualities and his or her goals during their time in the law school and after.. “It’s not just about the numbers” Kott explained. Kott said that despite the current economic downturn, applications to the law school have not dropped. But the admissions department has re-evaluated recruiting events, determining which would be best to reach out to potential applicants. - By Carter McCall, staff writer DTH ONLINE: Check out a video with tips on how to prepare for career fairs.
