DELAY OF GAME
After 644 days of misery, Lions get a taste of sweet relief
T
om Izzo may have finally gotten what he wanted. Michigan State didn’t win the national championship hosted in Detroit, but its residents will finally get to experience some of the anticipated relief that would have come if Michigan State had won the big dance. Of course, I’m talking about the Detroit Lions’ win against the Washington Redskins last Sunday that snapped a 19-game losing streak and marked the franchise’s first win since December 23, 2007. It was the second longest losing streak in NFL history, and it’s finally over. Call it karma, call it a fluke, but residents of the Motor City call it sweet relief. In the stretch of 644 Lion-less win days, a lot has developed in our country, including the election of a new president and seven major government bailouts. The government bailed out multiple banks and the three big auto manufacturers in Detroit — General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. And so, in light of this slew of government activity, it is only appropriate that the nation’s capital handed out yet another generous favor. On Sunday, Detroit became the beneficiary of another bailout —this one from the graciously bad play-calling of Redskins’ coach Jim Zorn. Zorn has been on the hot seat with the Redskins from the beginning of the season, and he did all but get himself fired in the loss to the Lions. And after the game Zorn and his Redskins were more dejected than Taylor Swift — and for good reason. What’s worse? To lose 19 straight games — or to be the guys that lost to the team who dropped 19 straight games? No stretch of the imagination could envision the reaction from the 40,896 fans in Ford Field — the lowest attendance number in the last 20 years. It was like watching an airline pilot emerge from his cockpit to celebrate a successful takeoff with his flight attendants.
Mark Thompson The MT Brain
The scene in the stands afterward was one of extreme jubilation — and yet it was over a feat that the New England Patriots accomplished 18 times in a row two seasons ago. The players acknowledged the standing ovation like an Olympic medal ceremony, standing at the 50-yard line and blowing kisses to each of the admiring faces in the crowd — a far cry from last season’s fans who covered their faces with brown paper bags. After the game, the Ford family was hugging everyone within a Mustang’s radius. That’s how much it meant to them, and that’s how much it meant to the city. Lion’s owner William Clay Ford would be later quoted as saying, “We not only got the monkey off our back, we got King Kong off our back.” But what did Sunday’s win actually do for Detroit? Imagine flunking every weekly quiz in a class only to ace one at the end. The Detroit Lions are still failing. Imagine falling out of a building and breaking every bone in your body except your pelvis, allowing you to sit through the pain. After all, the Detroit Lions are still hurting for wins. But imagine being one of those fans who sat through every blowout loss last season and lost the muscle control to smile. For them, this game was everything. So what did the win do for the Lions? Well, for starters, they have a one-game win streak. That’s better than half the rest of the NFL can say. Contact Mark Thompson at markdt@email.unc.edu
DTH PICKS OF THE WEEK
The DTH SportSaturday staff and one celebrity compete to pick the winners of the biggest ACC and national college football games each week. The DTH Picks of the Week makes its triumphant return today after a two-week hiatus, and so far, no one has separated himself or herself too far from the pack. Senior writer Mike Ehrlich took sole possession of first place with a 7-1 mark last week, but SportSaturday Assistant Editor Anna Kim appears ready to pounce should Ehrlich slip after a 6-2 week of her own. SportsSaturday Editor David Reynolds still occupies the bottom of the standings, but Reynolds said he’s poised to climb back into contention. This week’s celebrity picker is David Bevevino, Student Body Vice President. He will look to outpick close colleague and last week’s celebrity, Student Body President Jasmin Jones. Last Week Record to date
David Reynolds 6-2 10-6 (.625)
Mark Thompson 6-2 11-5(.688)
Jones finished with an impressive 7-1 record, setting a high bar for her political ally. This week’s matchups feature a couple interconference matchups between BCS schools, with Oklahoma at Miami, the most notable game on the slate. The rest of the games are conference matchups in the SEC, ACC and Pac-10 that should give some insight into which teams belong among the elite. Let the games begin.

In addition to catching passes from T.J. Yates, the speedy White is the ace of North Carolina’s special teams and serves as a ballcarrier in the offense’s new Wildcat formation. Quinn overpowers life’s obstacles, ACC blockers Emerges as force for UNC defense By Anna Kim
Assistant SportSaturday Editor
As far as coach Butch Davis can see, Robert Quinn doesn’t have any discernible gear but his first. “The first thing you know about Robert Quinn is that he goes a hundred miles an hour on every snap,” Davis said. In reality, the figure might be closer to 18.14 mph. Quinn first opened eyes with his ascent from third-string defensive end to starter. Jaws dropped when he broke Julius Peppers’ record in the 40-yard dash for defensive ends — clocking in at 4.51 seconds. But where he’s really captured attention is when players didn’t expect see him at all. “We’ll be watching film and be like, Rob, dag, you stole my tackle,” E.J. Wilson said. “He’ll be running from the other side and be right there when you think you’re about to make a tackle.” Quinn, a sophomore, has emerged as one of the key pieces in UNC’s highly touted defense. After four games, Quinn ranks fourth in the ACC for sacks and second for tackles for loss. “He has that unique speed and size,” said defensive line coach John Blake. “Sometimes God makes us with a lot of gifts. He’s taking advantage of those gifts.” But his God-given gifts aren’t what continue to push Quinn in his first gear. It’s what was taken away. “I almost lost football,” he said. “Now I have the opportunity to go play, and I’m trying to make the best of it.” In 2007, Quinn received emergency brain surgery for a tumor. Despite worries he might not live, Quinn survived. And despite cautions that he might not ever play football again, he starts. “In the back of our mind, we’re like, ‘Wow, this guy is coming out here and working hard,’” Wilson said. “This guy almost lost his life. Not only football. His life.” “It’s a lot bigger than what’s going on between the sidelines. He’s coming out and playing everyday, why can’t we do the same?” Quinn said he hasn’t been surprised by his own speed— just where he has ended up. “My freshman year I was third string,” Quinn said. “All of sudden
I was starting. It was unbelievable. I’m doing the most I can with it.” In three games, Quinn’s already proved to do just that. In UNC’s win against the East Carolina, Quinn delivered two sacks for a loss of 17 yards. And in a near loss to Connecticut, Quinn’s rush to the quarterback resulted in a holding call, the subsequent safety and a UNC victory. All that remains to be seen is if Quinn can reach his goal of 13 sacks on the season. But despite all his successes, Quinn admitted his surgery never escapes his consciousness. “It’s a tumor in my head,” he said. “I’m always thinking about it.” But he’s proved to be moving forward, and in record time at that. “I don’t want to regret anything. I just try to go full speed.”

Sewell survives shuffle, starting QB again By Mark Thompson
Assistant SportSaturday Assistant
J. SEWELL HEIGHT: 6’3” WEIGHT: 225 SENIOR QUARTERBACK
At the beginning of the season, Virginia coach Al Groh didn’t know which quarterback to choose. In one corner, there was Marc Verica, the junior who started last season and led Virginia to a victory against North Carolina in Charlottesville. In the other, there was senior Jameel Sewell, the starter from the 2006 and 2007 seasons. But after last week’s close loss to Southern Mississippi, Groh can rest easy with his decision. Sewell, who was named the starter after week one, established himself as the team’s leader in the Cavaliers’ third game, throwing for 312 yards, two touchdowns and only one interception. He threw four interceptions in his previous two games. Against SMU, Sewell also rushed 23 times for 23 yards and two touchdowns. His performance led to Virginia’s best offensive output of the season with 34 total points. The Cavaliers scored only 14 points in their first two games. “You watched the plays he made against Southern Miss where everybody was covered, and he would just tuck the ball away,” coach Butch Davis said. “He would always kept drives alive.
He ran a couple quarterback draws on purpose for touchdowns. He’s a handful.” Sewell is Virginia’s clear first option on offense. He has 44 more rushing attempts than any Virginia running backs, and he boasts three rushing touchdowns on the year in addition to being the team’s quarterback. Sewell currently is ranked sixth in the ACC in total offense. Although Sewell didn’t start last year, he is no stranger to the starting position. As a redshirt freshman, Sewell took over the starting quarterback position in the fourth week. He earned honorable mention freshman All-American honors and led the team to a 4-5 record in those last nine games. Sewell started off his sophomore campaign with a poor performance against Wyoming, but it wasn’t a precursor of what was to come. Virginia finished the season with nine wins, many of which were late game situations that Sewell helped lead. Virginia, or the Cardiac Cavaliers as they were known that year, trailed 16-10 against Wake Forest with about six minutes to go. In about four minutes, Sewell exectued a drive that moved the ball from their 44-yard line for the go-ahead
points. Sewell completed a 10-yard pass to Maurice Covington on fourthand-2 from the Demon Deacons’ 24 to keep the drive going which culminated with a touchdown. But Sewell’s year ended on a sour note at the Gator Bowl, where the Cavaliers took on Texas Tech and its No. 1 passing offense in the country. Virginia led the game early on, but Sewell suffered a knee injury early in the fourth quarter while Virginia was leading 21-14. Sewell returned for Virginia’s last drive, but he couldn’t engineer another late game drive with the scored tied 28-28. The Red Raiders eventually won on a last second field goal. That bowl game was the last time Sewell saw the field for an entire season. The next year, he lost his duties as the starting quarterback due to academic suspension. But after winning a training camp battle with Verica, he has regained his place behind center for the Cavaliers for his senior season. The Cavaliers will lean on him heavily Saturday to continue to create offense with his feet. Those improvisations already have Davis worried. “Sewell at quarterback is very athletic, he moves in the pocket well, he throws on the run very well and he can extend plays,” Davis said.

Cavaliers look to turn around historic streak By Anna Kim
Assistant SportSaturday Assistant
TV/Radio: TV coverage will be on Raycom. Radio coverage will be provided by WCHL 1360 AM, WRDU 106.1. When it comes to the Cavaliers, history has been unkind to the Tar Heels. Most recently, UNC suffered a 16-13 overtime loss in Charlottesville after leading 10-3 with 2:18 remaining in regulation. It marked North Carolina’s 14th straight loss at Scott Stadium and its ninth loss in its last eleven matchups against the Cavaliers. But unfortunately for UVa., the present remains cruel. Virginia (0-3) is one of six teams still seeking its first win of the season, and it is the only winless team in the ACC. A loss against UNC would contribute to an eight-game skid, which is UVa’s longest since the Cavaliers dropped the final three games of the 1981 season under Dick Bestwick, then the first five games of the George Welsh era. Coach Al Groh’s job security appears to remain under harsh scrutiny unless the Cavaliers can turn around its fortunes. UVa. opened its season with a 26-14 loss against FCS opponent William and
Mary — its first loss to a lower-division team in 23 years. During the game, Jameel Sewell, Marc Verica and Vic Hall all spent time in the pocket during a bevy of quarterback substitutions implemented throughout the game. Sewell became a starter in the team’s subsequent losses against then-No. 16 TCU and Southern Mississippi. In three games, Sewell has completed 41 of 81 attempts for 512 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. As an offense, the Cavaliers rank last in the conference in scoring offense, rushing offense and total offense. After the losses of the three of the team’s primary receivers — Maurice Covington, Cary Koch and Kevin Ogletree— the Cavaliers have struggled to solidify its receiving corps. All four receivers on the depth chart are underclassmen, and five Cavalier freshman have recorded catches. Last season, Groh’s team rebounded from its misfortunes to go undefeated in the month of October, including its last minute victory over the Tar Heels. North Carolina will look to rebound from its own disappointing 24-7 loss against Georgia Tech, and prevent history from repeating itself.

Intangibles
Last week, UNC’s offense struggled against a Georgia Tech defense not necessarily characterized as stingy, but UVa.’s total defense ranks among the lowest in the conference. Inexperience in Uva.’s defensive front gives North Carolina the edge. Edge: UNC UNC’s defense did not live up to expectations in the team’s loss, but it still boasts an experienced unit looking to return to normal at home. UVa.’s offense is a far cry from an elite unit, so there’s no question here. Edge: UNC Before the season, Groh stated there was no area with greater potential improvement than special teams. Then they allowed a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. In addition, miscues in the return game have victimized Uva. in all three of its losses. Edge: UNC Both teams are coming off tough losses and will want to rebound. But the Cavaliers are also looking to stop a historic losing streak, and a win on the road would certainly bolster Groh’s petition to keep his job. Edge: Uva.

Wearing a white Kansas City Royals flatbill cap backwards, with a shining silver sticker under the brim, Charles Brown paused to think about which word described him best. Safety Deunta Williams had tabbed him as “sharp.” Cornerback Kendric Burney referred to him as “crazy.” Coach Butch Davis settled on deeming him a “playmaker.” After a few seconds, Brown came to a decision. “I guess they all sound good. Crazy is good. Sharp is good. Playmaker is good,” Brown said. “I would describe myself as being explosive. That’s the only word that hasn’t been used.” Maybe four adjectives is enough for Brown, but not for observers of him and UNC’s defense. Plenty of words already have been written on the strength of the unit, a veteran group for which Brown has forced four turnovers. Brown has consistently put himself in the right place at the right time. He’s picked off a team-leading two passes and recovered two fumbles. He’s also recorded 23 tackles, trailing only Quan Sturdivant and Burney in that category. “He worked really, really hard on the fundamentals of playing corner,” Davis said. “Just focusing on the keys and then letting your God-given athletic ability put you in position to make some plays.” Brown has burst back into the lineup after injuries slowed him down in 2008. An ankle injury he sustained prior to UNC’s opener against McNeese State lingered for most of the season, and he missed the Tar Heels’ final two games of the regular season. Williams said Brown expressed

Don’t let me spoil this thing away,’” Williams said. Brown hasn’t disappointed on that promise so far. In addition to his impressive statistics, he’s been one of UNC’s more passionate players on the field, always saying a little something extra to an opponent. Burney said that he loves Brown’s intensity because it gets him and the rest of the defense fired up when it isn’t playing well. “I love football. I hate losing,” Brown said. “That kind of gets me fired up when our team’s not doing good enough I feel like that’s losing at the time, and I hate losing.” Brown’s also carries the coveted title of “Swag King” on the team, which he got from departed wide receiver Brandon Tate. He said Williams and defensive tackle
Marvin Austin have already tried to steal the nickname from him. To maintain a hold on his royal designation, he’s convinced his teammates to call him King Swag No. 1. “When you meet some rappers, you understand that the reason they can freestyle is that their mind is very sharp,” Williams said. “On the spur of the moment he’ll come up with a joke or some kind of crazy freestyle.” Whatever his nickname ends up being by the end of the season, Brown has earned the trust of his teammates with his play so far. Williams said he trusts Brown’s ball skills more, and he gives the cornerback more free reign to intercept balls rather than bat them away. As for Burney, he’s told Brown that he’s like a brother. “When I look to my left, and I see CB, I know I’m pretty much good.”

Wildcat offense wields weapon with QB Blue Coordinator anticipates production By David Reynolds SportSaturday Editor
When asked what he wanted to do more on the field, quarterback A.J. Blue gave an answer befitting of a freshman quarterback. “I definitely want to throw more,” Blue said. “But Coach Davis doesn’t want to put more on me than I can handle right now, so I guess he’s just taking it slow.” Talk about an understatement. The young signal-caller has appeared in all four of North Carolina’s games as a quarterback, but has thrown only a single pass — a 24-yard completion to Erik Highsmith. But to say all Blue does is hand the ball off would be misleading. He’s taken the reins of UNC’s version of the Wildcat offense, a trendy formation that has been sweeping through football at all levels since Darren McFadden and Felix Jones found success with it at Arkansas. Offensive coordinator John Shoop said he began toying with the idea of adding this package to
the offensive playbook when UNC started to recruit Blue a year and a half ago. With a logjam at the quarterback position, Shoop knew he would have to be creative to get the ball in Blue’s hands. “He can throw the ball, run the ball, catch the ball, do all kinds of things. He’s kind of a throwback athlete,” Shoop said. “I think the defensive coaches are fighting for him, too.” Still, UNC’s Wildcat experiment has only produced up-and-down results during its first trial. Blue has completed the aforementioned one pass and gained a modest 17 yards on nine carries, but Shoop said the package was instrumental in providing a spark during North Carolina’s wins against Connecticut and East Carolina. Shoop said he thinks the production from the Wildcat should improve once Blue begins to get more comfortable coming off the bench cold. Blue shared similar sentiments with Shoop. He said that finding
a rhythm when he only gets into the game for a couple plays is difficult, especially with the added pressure of reduced playing time if the offense makes a mistake. “I know that they’re looking for big plays out of it — that’s why we’re running it,” Blue said. “But if not, then we’re not going to run it again.” As for throwing the ball, Blue said Shoop and the rest of the offensive coaches are playing it close to the chest. He personally has “no clue” when he’ll be called on to throw the ball again, but added that he throws the ball regularly when the offense practices the Wildcat. Shoop simply unfurled a coy smile and declined to comment on when Blue would throw the ball again. But he did hint at a few tricks UNC has up its sleeves when discussing Blue’s potential. “I think A.J. Blue’s going to have more production throughout the season, whether it’s at quarterback, running back, receiver or different spots,” Shoop said. “He’s a weapon, and we want to use him.”

UNC special teams a work in progress By Mark Thompson
Assistant SportSaturday Editor
Most special teams units garner little attention throughout a season, but during the last few weeks, facets of UNC’s group have been under scrutiny. The questions started after the East Carolina game. Punter Grant Schallock averaged a meager 31.3 yards per punt, and kicker Casey Barth missed a 38-yard field goal — his second miss in two games. Since then, only one of those questions has been answered. “What we did was allow C.J. (Feagles) and Grant to compete with each other,” Allen Mogridge, UNC’s tight ends and special teams coach, said. “When you are in a situation where you have to compete every single day, that’s going to bring out the best in you.” Schallock did just that against Georgia Tech last week, averaging 47.2 yards per punt. “They pretty much put it out there saying, ‘Listen, it’s time to get it done, or we’re going to have someone else do it,’” Schallock said. But UNC’s other issue remains unsettled. Barth missed a 32yard field goal against the Yellow Jackets last week. Barth said he knew it was a missed opportunity that he should have capitalized on — a sentiment that head coach Butch Davis agreed with.
“That’s two times we’ve missed those chip-shot field goals,” Davis said. “We’ve got to make those. If it’s inside 42 yards, you’ve got to be 100 percent.” Barth’s older brother Connor, who used to kick for the Tar Heels before Casey, went through a slump his sophomore year and talked to Casey after the Georgia Tech game. “He told me to visualize the kicks, you know, even when you are in the shower before you go to bed, just to make your mind see you’ve done it before,” Barth said. “I guess I’ve gotten away from that a little this year.” UNC’s coaches have been working with both Schallock and Barth, and they said they are confident in both to finish the season strong. If there is one area of the special teams that Davis has been most happy with, it has been punt coverage, and, more specifically, the play of Johnny White and Jordan Hemby. The duo are the gunners on the special teams, and it their job to get downfield and tackle the punt returner — a job they have excelled at this season. Against Georgia Tech, which features the nation’s third best punt returner, UNC gave up just 5.0 yards per return. “That was a major, major goal,” Davis said of the punt coverage unit’s feat. “If there was any bright side that might have been it.”
