Aesop’s fable shows the way for decision on Tar Heel RBs
T
he classic tale of the tortoise and the hare has never been more pertinent than it is now. The fable, which dates back to the fifth century B.C., can be difficult to relate to. And so in order to make a connection, I have changed it to add a more modern flair. For the character known as the hare, we will use Shaun Draughn, and for the tortoise, Ryan Houston. The story begins when the hare and tortoise, or Draughn and Houston if you are following along, decide to race. Draughn is, of course, the favorite. His record speaks for itself and his experience is unrivaled. But Houston’s philosophy of slow and steady has never failed him before. Soon all the spectators gather, eagerly anticipating the race, and then it commences. As expected, Draughn takes

a big lead right from the start. He speeds around the bends and obstacles with ease. Houston goes through them. But Draughn builds such a large lead during the race that he decides to slow down, unsuspecting of a Houston come back. But Houston does catch up and crosses the finish line just before Draughn, even with Draughn’s late push. The fable ends like most fables do, with a moral — slow and steady wins the race. And so the question is, will slow and steady win at UNC? North Carolina’s running game
has recently looked like a kid learning to ride a bicycle. They just can’t get anything started. Draughn has run hard but only has 274 yards on 74 carries to show for it. That’s an average of 3.7 yards per carry. Houston has carried the ball only 34 times for 159 yards. Many of those carries have been on third-down situations where the defense knows Houston will be running the ball, but he is still averaging 4.7 yards per carry. He’s just a better fit with UNC’s O-line. And who’s to say a bigger, less flashy running back can’t be an every down guy? Just look at Brandon Jacobs, running back for the New York Giants. Jacobs isn’t known for his speed, but he gets the job done with brute size and strength. Statistics don’t lie. It’s time to give slow and steady a shot. Contact Mark Thompson at markdt@email.unc.edu.

Tar Heel players bit by the Twitter-bug By Anna Kim
Assistant SportSaturday Editor
If brevity is the soul of wit, a handful of players have proved themselves masters of the craft. A number of North Carolina players have recruited the services of Twitter, a social networking tool that allows users to post status updates in 140 characters or less. “Not everybody on this team has a chance to tell their story,” said Kevin Best, deputy director for athletic communications. “This is a way for them to get their personality out there, to have a voice.” The team has never proved to lack voice or personality on the field. And in less than 140 characters, UNC boasts some off of it. A cursory scan of the team’s tweets showcase a variety of sayings, sentiments and nonsense. Tweets range from the everyday, such as the following posted by defensive end Aleric Mullins: “God was on our side this morning was able to walk out my first accident by his blessing.” Also available are cornerback Kendric Burney’s thoughts on football: “sum1 gon ask me KB do you have faith in ur QB? I look at the
man and said child please TJ is the quarterback and we stand by him ENOUGH said.” And of course, the transient thoughts of Marvin Austin: “Misssssssss merry mat, mat, mat all dressed in black, black wit silver button, buttons all down her back back back….” While almost a fifth of the UNC depth chart graces Twitter, the charge is led in large part by the North Carolina defense. Proving himself both a veteran on the field and on cutting edge technology, defensive end E.J. Wilson delved into the world of Twitter this summer. While he also holds the record for UNC defensive ends for squats at 670 lbs., he is quickly gaining recognition as the team’s most prolific tweeter. He is also the team’s most enthusiastic recruiter. “Nah, I don’t think its embarrassing,” he said. “I’m trying to get everybody on the bandwagon.” Defensive tackle Cam Thomas was the first to succumb to Wilson and Austin’s dual pressure. He identified Wilson and Serena Williams as his favorite to follow. “Everybody says that a lot of interesting stuff happens to me,”
Wilson said. “I’m a very random person. And now I know how random I really am.” Mullins discovered a different perk on Twitter. A potential job. “One day I had a 9 o’clock class, and I tweeted, ‘Man, I don’t feel like going to class.’ This one guy tweeted me and said, Google is hiring people to work from home. You don’t have to go to class at all. That’s networking.” Social media has permeated the world of sports, initiating its share of controversy and conversation. In September, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach became the first NCAA football coach to ban Twitter from his program. But North Carolina football administrators have maintained that tweeting is not out of bounds. “There is no official team policy on Twitter,” Best said. “But we have talked to them at length about social media. “We caution them that this is free for the public and the media to use.” While Wilson admitted he has never tweeted during gametime, fans should remain wary — and

Defensive tackle Cam Thomas joined Twitter at the behest of E.J. Wilson and Marvin Austin. He sends his tweets from Triplefattgoose. on the lookout . “I was joking that I was going to give one the equipment managers my phone and give live updates throughout the game,” he said. Wilson said that the tool has offered the players a means of connecting with fans. It also helped eliminate preconceived notions
about athletes. “Fans get to see me not just as a football player, but a person,” he said. “Out of the uniform. Outside of the field. We have a life. “We have feelings. We worry about the same things like they do.” Enough said.

Little earns veteran title with solid start David Reynolds SportSaturday Editor
Coming into the 2009 season, Greg Little’s title of North Carolina’s “veteran” receiver was tenuous at best. Little had all of 24 career catches and 255 career receiving
yards coming into his junior year, not exactly close to the more than 1,200 yards Hakeem Nicks gained for the Tar Heels last season. But Little’s lived up to the preseason billing. He’s already doubled that career catch total through only five

games, and he’s gained 222 receiving to cement himself as the leader of a receiving corps bursting at the seams with youth. “He leads by example when the ball is in his hands,” receivers coach Charlie Williams said. “That’s the way he leads. He doesn’t have to say a lot or say anything.” And while that production so far doesn’t put him in the same class as Nicks, his consistency has drawn plenty of praise from his coaches, including coach Butch Davis. Davis singled out Little as one of the bright spots in the Tar Heels’ 16-3 loss to Virginia, saying that the junior’s dependability was something from which UNC’s young receivers could learn. Little had eight catches against the Cavaliers to bring his season total to 25, and he has recorded at least two catches in every game this season. And watching him make all those catches has rubbed off on some of his teammates. “When one guy catches the ball, then that makes the other guy want to catch the ball and have his opportunity to run with it,” Williams said. Even though he’s leading UNC in receptions, he’s poised to do even more. In the Virginia game, he was demonstrably frustrated, pumping his arms across his chest sev-
“He would actually walk with me out of the huddle and tell me what we were running.” Jheranie boyd, Wide Receiver eral times when T.J. Yates couldn’t find him or one of his teammates on third downs. “He’s definitely pissed off about it, but he’s just stays on it,” Erik Highsmith said. “All the receivers, he tells us to just keep working, keep catching balls.” But Little’s game-day performances isn’t the only way he’s helped out with the development of North Carolina’s new playmakers. Receiver Jheranie Boyd said Little was instrumental in streamlining his transition from high school to the collegiate level. “For the first three weeks of training camp, he would actually walk with me out of the huddle and tell me what we were running just to get used to it,” Boyd said. Of course, Little is still far from a finished product in his first full season as a receiver. Williams said he still needs to work on blocking downfield and battling for position with cornerbacks and safeties for 50-50 balls.

Junior Greg Little was the sole veteran receiver on the squad at season’s start, and he has lived up to the expectations as a leader.
Those skills — along with remaining upbeat when he isn’t involved with every play. “The thing we talk about all the time is being patient,” Williams said. “He just needs to be patient and let the game come to him instead of thinking he has to do something special. He just has to run his routes and catch the ball when it comes his way.”

The DTH Picks of the Week returns after a week of what can only be characterized as an embarrassing bludgeoning. Whether the pickers fell victim to the unpredictability of the college football gods or simply their own incompetence, none of the seven esteemed pickers of the week finished over .500. Out of the dregs, beat writer and defending Picks of the Week champion Mike Ehrlich has strengthened his hold on the first place standings at 17-7. This week, Picks of the Week found it fitting to bring in one of the most prestigious pickers of all time — former Last Week Record to date

Brown refining speed with a little patience By David Reynolds SportSaturday Editor
To call Zach Brown “quick” would be an understatement. When the sophomore linebacker ran a blazing 4.28 40-yard dash time this summer, the word appropriate for his speed bumped to “breakneck” at the very least. “I just couldn’t believe he ran it. He looked like he was moving, but I just couldn’t believe it,” Bruce Carter said. “Guys were yelling, and some guys didn’t believe him so they made him run two or three more times after that.” And let it be noted that on those successive sprints demanded by teammates, Carter said he consistently turned a time right around that same 4.28. But in order to succeed as a linebacker, he’s learning to go against his instincts on the field and — gasp — slow down, at least for a second or two. Having straight-line speed is different than knowing what to do with it. 2009 marks Brown’s first year as a starter, and he’s been learning through doing. Linebackers coach Art Kaufman said he’s been working with Brown on perfecting the details of the position — where to line up, proper technique and decision-making after the ball is snapped. Of those, the most important concept Brown’s learning is developing patience so he won’t run himself out of the play. “I think that’s the hardest thing
for a linebacker to do — to take the time and find out where to fit,” Kaufman said. “He’s going to have to get better at taking on blockers, but that’s something that comes with time.” So far, Kaufman’s been pleased with Brown’s progress in these areas, but he expects the linebacker to make a jump in his play after getting some rest during next weekend’s bye week. And playing linebacker isn’t the only thing Brown does fast. According to Carter, Brown also has a mouth so quick that he sometimes talks too fast for comprehension — often to his teammates’ amusement. “When he gets too excited you can’t really understand what he’s saying — his words kind of connect,” Carter said. “Everybody picks on him about it, saying he needs to slow down. It seems like he’s speaking a different language.” As Brown progresses, Kaufman said going through the defensive reads will become natural for him, and that’s when the speed can become even more advantageous. Instead of finding himself on the edge of the play, Brown will be right at the center. “You’ve got the speed, that is a big asset. His big thing is he has strength to go along with it,” Kaufman said. “If he can get all those other things to go along with the speed, it gives him tremendous potential.”

Chapple’s play crucial for Eagles’ upset bid By Anna Kim
assistant SportSaturday Editor
L. Chapple HEIGHT: 6’1” WEIGHT: 200 SOPHOMORE QUARTERBACK
Quarterback Lee Chapple will look to sustain his own success and bolster Georgia Southern’s season in his team’s matchup against North Carolina. With Chapple at the helm, the Eagles have garnered a 3-2 record in the Football Championship Subdivision’s Southern Conference. They will also seek to capitalize off the momentum from one of the best passing performances in the football program’s history. In a 26-21 win at Wofford, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound quarterback displayed both his size and a capable arm. The sophomore completed his first 17 pass attempts, tying for the secondlongest streak in Southern Conference history. He finished the game completing 25-of-28 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown without committing a turnover. Chapple ranks fifth in the FCS for pass completions but a mere 68th in total offense. Contention is unlikely and a victory even less so, but he will look to continue making history as he travels to Chapel Hill to face the lone Division I team on the team’s schedule.
The last time Georgia Southern beat an FBS opponent came in 2004, when the Eagles handed Florida International a loss away from home. With Chapple at the reigns, the Eagles received one first-place vote and was picked to finish fifth in a preseason poll by the Southern Conference head coaches. Chapple arrives armed with experience as a second-year starter, after a year of redshirting his freshman year. During the 2008 season, the quarterback led Georgia Southern to an impressive 17-10 win at No. 14 Furman, passing for 323 yards and securing the fourth-highest yardage total in program history. He also completed 39-of-56 passes and threw for two touchdowns. Chapple has only continued to improve in his sophomore campaign, adding 124 completions in 184 attempts to round out a 67.4 completion percentage. He has also found a capable receiver in Jamere Valentine, who needed only five games to earn him a spot in the GSU season Top 10 leaders. With four touchdown receptions, Valentine moved into a tie for ninth among the annual leaders. Despite relative inexperience at the position, the sophomore exhib-
ited maturity at the position during a close 29-26 victory against Albany earlier this season. The quarterback went 12-for-12 in the fourth quarter and led a gamewinning drive that was concluded with a field goal. He finished the game 30-for-43 for 259 yards and two touchdowns. With six touchdowns and 991 yards on the season, Chapple has already surpassed his 2008 statistics in both passing yardage and touchdowns in five games this season. However the quarterback will face a tough North Carolina pass defense, which ranks an impressive fourth in the NCAA. In five games, the defense has allowed 79 completions in 134 attempts, which yields a 59 completion percentage. Aside from quarterbacking responsibilities, Chapple shares another similarity with North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates. T he sophomore gre w up in Alpharetta Ga., just 19 miles away from Marietta Ga., the hometown of Yates. And though odds appear stacked against the young quarterback, Chapple will seek to come away with another similarity with UNC’s quarterback — a win in Chapel Hill.

Struggling UNC o≠ense looks to remedy its ills By David Reynolds SportSaturday Editor
TV/Radio: TV coverage will be provided by ESPN360.com. Radio coverage will be broadcast by WCHL 1360 AM, WRDU 106.1. A visit from another Football Championship Subdivision team should be just what the doctor ordered for a North Carolina offense that’s ailing, both mentally and physically. Injuries early in the season knocked out two starters from an offensive line that already lacked depth. T.J. Yates’ security blanket in the passing game, tight end Zack Pianalto, also remains absent from the offensive huddle with a bum foot. Furthermore, the Tar Heels are dealing with the fallout from a pair of offensive showings they’d rather forget. UNC’s offense failed to gain 200 yards in its last two games against Georgia Tech and Virginia, and it put a total of just 10 points on the scoreboard in those contests. In its game against the Cavaliers, North Carolina failed to move the ball into the red zone even once. That all should change against a Georgia Southern team that should be overmatched from the opening snap.
Coach Butch Davis talked of simplifying his team’s offense in order to get it back on track, and it won’t get any more simple for UNC than the worst defense remaining on its schedule. Yates, who has been hounded relentlessly with pressure, should be able to stand in the pocket an extra second or two against the Eagles, giving him time to get in a rhythm with his young receivers and look farther downfield. Running backs Shaun Draughn and Ryan Houston should also benefit from the Tar Heels’ physical advantage. UNC’s ground game has had problems finding running lanes, but they should find some more space and bigger holes. One area North Carolina has had no problems with has been the play of its defense. The veteran unit ranks No. 8 nationally in total defense, allowing just more than 251 yards per game. Georgia Southern Lee Chapple has thrown for 991 yards and six touchdowns on the season, but he’s also tossed six interceptions. Deunta Williams and the secondary should force a few turnovers to put UNC’s offense in good field position. Yates and Co. should be able to convert those opportunities blow off some frustration with a couple touchdowns.

Intangibles
UNC’s offense has taken it on the chin in recent weeks, turning in consecutive mediocre performances against a pair of ACC foes. But North Carolina’s size and collection of athletes will be too much for the Eagles, even if it is struggling at the moment. Edge: UNC North Carolina boasts the nation’s No. 8 defense in terms of total yardage, and nothing about Georgia Southern’s offense should scare them too much. Look for another lockdown performance from the Tar Heels. Edge: UNC Casey Barth was successful in his only field goal attempt last week, and Da’Norris Searcy and Johnny White are both threats to take a punt or kickoff to the house anytime they touch the ball. Players on UNC’s special teams might start for Ga. Southern. Edge: UNC Ga. Southern arrives in Kenan Stadium with nothing to lose — no one expects a close game. UNC, meanwhile, has a tremendous amount of pressure on it to rebound on offense and stop a losing streak. Edge: GSU.

key matchups
vs. Kendric Burney unc Cornerback
Jamere Valentine GSU Wide Receiver
Valentine leads Georgia Southern with 26 catches, 265 yards and four receiving touchdowns. The six-footone wide receiver weighs 200 pounds and serves as a sizable target and big blocker. Burney will need to be on his game to keep Valentine at bay.
Quan Sturdivant unc Linebacker
Adam Urbano GSU Running Back
Urbano splits carries with Darreion Robinson but has still managed to gain 282 yards. He averages over five yards per carry and has scored two touchdowns. But Urbano has yet to face a defensive front seven like UNC’s with Sturdivant in the middle.
Erik Highsmith unc Wide Receiver
Darrell Pasco GSU Cornerback
Erik Highsmith has worn departed receiver Brandon Tate’s No. 88 proud and stepped up to fill the void Tate left so far as a freshman. He leads the team with 290 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Highsmith also has two 100-yard receiving games.
DUKE
NC STATE
■ Kickoff time: 3:30 p.m. ■ After last week’s loss to Wake Forest, North Carolina State won’t be produc-
ing any “In-State Champions” shirts like they did last year. Duke lost a close contest to Virginia Tech and will be riding that level of play into Raleigh.
vs. #22 GA. TECH
FLORIDA STATE
■ Kickoff time: 3:30 p.m. ■ Georgia Tech has already lost to one team from Florida, and it wasn’t even
close. But Florida State isn’t Miami. After starting the season with high hopes, the Seminoles are 2-3 and staring down a possible losing season.
vs. #3 ALABAMA
#20 MISSISSIPPI
■ Kickoff time: 3:30 p.m. ■ This SEC headliner features Alabama, which has dominated en route to
a 5-0 record. Ole Miss is looking to climb back up the polls and prove it deserved the top-five ranking it held before losing to South Carolina.
vs. WISCONSIN
#9 Ohio State
■ Kickoff time: 3:30 p.m. ■ The Buckeyes are 4-1 and will be looking to badger Wisconsin for the win
in the Horseshoe. But the undefeated Badgers are rolling and could use a win over Ohio State to take full control in the Big Ten.
vs. #1 FLORIDA
#4 LSU
■ Kickoff time: 3:30 p.m. ■ Florida is coming off a much-needed bye week after quarterback Tim Tebow
suffered a concussion against Kentucky. LSU is coming off a last-second win against Georgia, but knocking off the defending champs will be even tougher.
vs. #13 OREGON
UCLA
■ Kickoff time: 3:30 p.m. ■ National Previews wouldn’t be complete without a trip out West. UCLA will
try to defend their home turf against No. 13 Oregon. But the way the Ducks are rolling, the only intrigue might be what uniform combination they wear.

the gap and leave little room to make a return — a testament to the sparse amount of yards they have allowed. In addition, the pair must still execute a solid tackle once they get downfield with their speed. “I just run until he puts his hand up,” Hemby said. “If he doesn’t put his hand up then I’m going to just get to him full steam.” The gunners typically reach the returner in close succession, and both Hemby and White admitted that they compete to get there first. White said that he is happy if Hemby gets the tackle, but that he always tries to reach the returner first. “We talk about it, even during the week we talk about it,” Hemby said. “Then, during warm-ups we will see each other, and we will try to have a race to see who can get down there the fastest.” Whoever it is, precedent suggests he’ll make another great play for UNC’s punt coverage.

North Carolina’s punt coverage squad has adopted the mind-set of “Beamer Ball.” The term refers to the style of play that Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech head coach, preaches about the importance of field position. And with UNC’s offense struggling as of late, it’s easy to see why field position has become so important. “That’s a big key in the game — winning the field position battle,” said Johnny White, a gunner on UNC’s special teams unit. “I think gunners have a lot of control and can help big time. It can set us up for a better opportunity on offense.” The special teams have proven to be one of the most consistent facets on the team. So far they have allowed a mere 3.45 yards per return, giving the defense plenty of cushion. That minuscule yards per return average is the 22nd lowest in the country, and a big reason why UNC has kept their previous two games close. “We’ve been relying on them to make some big plays for us and they’ve done it,” Allen Mogridge, UNC’s special teams coach said.
“They answered the bell.” Against Virginia, the Tar Heels held Chase Minnifield to 11 yards on three returns. UNC was in contention for much of the game and part of that can be attributed to not giving up big returns. White, a junior, shares the gunner responsibility with senior Jordan Hemby. Their job is to run downfield and tackle the opposing punt returner. “They’ve done a nice job out there,” Mogridge said. “They’re beating press coverage and getting down the field and making those returners make decisions, whether it be fair catch or whether it be get the ball secured and get stopped.” The gunners aim to get off the line of scrimmage and reach the returner while evading blockers — a skill that both players attribute to their speed. “I feel like I have a lot of speed, so I try to use that to my advantage,” Hemby said. “On the first one, I test him out to see how the special teams are going to react to me, but if he’s too slow I’m just going to run around him.” White and Hemby utilize a speed that has frequently marked them the fastest players on the team by teammates and coaches. That speed allows them to close

Boyd slows down to discuss his mentor, mama’s boys
Wide receiver Jheranie Boyd is the successor to the No. 87 jersey previously worn by Brandon Tate. As a true freshman, Boyd has shown glimpses of Tate-like abilities as a deep threat, most notably his 59-yard touchdown reception against ECU. The 6-foot-2 Gastonia native caught up with Assistant SportSaturday editor Mark Thompson to chat about who really has the most swag, what he puts on his eye-black— and his mama.
Mark Thompson: What’s your favorite part about being at North Carolina?
Jheranie Boyd: Um, I would say probably everything: the people, going to class, meeting new people, you see a ton of girls, stuff like that.
MT: Have any of the wide receivers taken you under their wing as a mentor to you?
JB: I would say Johnny White. We talk every day. If I have any personal problems I come to him and talk to him, and when I’m on the field he

Injured Pianalto anxious to play By Anna Kim
Assistant SportSaturday Editor
The last image of Zack Pianalto in uniform captured him being wheeled away on a cart with his head down and arm raised. An initial diagnosis ranged from four weeks out to an entire season. But the tight end left his own prognosis on the field. “I’ll be back,” he said. Pianalto anticipates the forthcoming question about injuries — and laughs. The gator ride from endzone to locker room is by no means a wellbeaten path or a joking matter. But it is familiar. In the past four years, the junior has enjoyed one injury-free season. He has broken a collarbone, a left fibula, sprained an ankle and, most recently, dislocated his right foot. He has missed 10 games in two years, even more in the past four. But the most difficult, he said, has been his absence this season. “This is the first time I’ve seen him get down a little bit,” mother Sherri Pianalto said. “He’d worked so hard to get where he was.” Prior to the injury, Pianalto reemerged as a key passing option with seven receptions for 87 yards and one touchdown in UNC’s 12-10 win over Connecticut. After scoring the game-tying touchdown with 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter, Pianalto jumped into the air. When he came down, he landed awkwardly on a defender’s foot and crumbled to
the field. Doctors approached the junior to pop the dislocated foot back into place on the field. They needed to do it without anesthesia — so they did it without warning. Pianalto didn’t need one. “Right when I knew something was wrong, that’s what popped in my head,” he said. “Really, again? I have to do this again?” What does a slew of injuries mean to a superstitious player? As a junior at Springdale High School, Pianalto did his part to sustain an undefeated season by visiting bowling alleys every Thursday. The following year, Pianalto caught the ball in the end zone in Hoover, Ala., where he broke his collarbone and missed all but two games his senior season. Before every game at UNC, Pianalto listens to the Al Pacino speech from Any Given Sunday. His first career touchdown pass against Georgia Tech was followed by a fractured left fibula. So what does it all mean? He doesn’t know. But when an MRI confirmed a subtalar dislocation of his right foot this year, it told him the only thing that mattered. He’ll be back. “I’ve been on this side of the fence before,” he said. “But I get to finish the season.” Pianalto has set no definite timetable, but his mother said she hopes to see him on the field

Zack Pianalto has been one of T.J. Yates’ favorite targets, but injured himself against Connecticut during a touchdown celebration. against Florida State Oct. 22. “I pray that my injuries are behind me,” he said. “I’ve been through a lot. But you never know. There’s a plan for everyone, and I don’t know what mine is. ” Nearly a month ago, all he recalled was scoring a touchdown and turning to jog down the field. On Sunday, Pianalto finally got to take that run. “He knows what he wants,” Sherri said. “So even if he has to do it again, he will. He is going to do it, even if he has to start over.”
