For Davis, struggles all too familiar

istory repeats itself. There, I said it. I know it’s cliché, but doesn’t the fact that the phrase is abused more than Cubs fans enhance its credibility? It’s just true. For example, in 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg and plunged to the depths of the ocean after being declared “unsinkable.” Four years later, her sister-ship, the Britannic, with a multitude of improved safety features, hit a German mine and sank as well. And if that’s not enough to convince you, take a look at Butch Davis’ third season at UNC. The Tar Heels are now 4-2, but the team’s best win was against unranked East Carolina (4-3). When Davis coached at the University of Miami, he got off to a great start. In two seasons, he had gone a combined 17-6 while nursing the school’s program back to health from the NCAA rules violations it had accumulated before Davis was there. But in 1997, his third season, the Hurricanes went 5-6. It was their worst season since 1979. And here’s the kicker. Are you
But if this is you, then I also have good news for you. In the three following years that Davis coached at Miami, he never had a team that won fewer than nine games in a season. Big plays eluding Tar Heels By David Reynolds SportSaturday Editor
North Carolina’s 42-12 blowout win against Georgia Southern almost two weeks ago served as a pacifier for most of what ailed its offense. UNC’s ground game got back on track with four rushing touchdowns, T.J. Yates was efficient in the short passing game and the Tar Heels lit up the scoreboard for 42 points. But for all that offensive success, North Carolina still couldn’t get going what it did regularly a season ago: complete passes deep down the field. “I just feel like on those shots where we have guys running downfield, we just have to hit them,” wide receiver Greg Little said. “We can’t overthrow them, guys can’t drop the ball. We have to capitalize on opportunities.” Twice against the Eagles, Little was overthrown by Yates. The junior signal-caller also misfired on other opportunities to Dwight Jones and Erik Highsmith. Yates said those misses were the result of forcing the ball downfield and simply misfiring. “Sometimes you don’t hit it in the game, and sometimes you do,” Yates said. That’s not to say UNC hasn’t found any success this season when throwing it long. Jheranie Boyd reeled in a 59yarder against East Carolina, and Highsmith nabbed a 40-yard bomb against Georgia Tech. But the frequency with which these passes have been completed has simply paled in comparison to 2008. Then, UNC’s offense produced plenty of balls down the field, largely due to Hakeem Nicks’ and Brandon Tate’s playmaking abilities.
DTH File/ANdrew Dye
T.J. Yates and the UNC offense has struggled to complete deep passes this season after the departures of Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate. Without those two and Brooks Foster, North Carolina’s average yards per reception has dropped from 14.2 last season to 10.3. The decreased yards per completion allows defenses to stay more concentrated in the box, clogging up space on running plays and underneath passing routes. “Definitely just kind of practice throwing the ball downfield,” Yates said during UNC’s bye week. “That’s one thing we’re going to have to work on.” Little said that increased success in completing these types of passes will take a “total team effort.” The most pivotal role rests with UNC’s offensive line, which needs to provide enough protection for Yates to set his feet and for the receiver to get downfield.
Getting Yates that protection has been easier said than done. Often, Yates is hurried or pressured before he’s ready to throw, forcing him to dump the ball off short. UNC’s linemen have allowed 14 sacks this season. And while all that blocking is going on, the receiver must get separation from his defender with a great route. Finally, the quarterback must place the ball where that wideout can make a play on it, and the receiver has to snare it. Little said he is confident UNC’s big-play offense will re-emerge because he’s already seen what he and fellow offensive teammates can do. “We’ve done it in practice,” Little said. “We’ve just got to translate it on gameday.”

Ponder poised to shred stingy secondary By David Reynolds SportSaturday Editor
C. Ponder HEIGHT: 6’2” WEIGHT: 217 RS JUNIOR QUARTERBACK
Florida State’s football program may be in turmoil after its lousy 2-4 start, but don’t blame QB Christian Ponder. The junior signal-caller just might be the only reason the Seminoles aren’t in even more trouble. Ponder has broken through in his second full season behind center, throwing for 1,781 yards and nine touchdowns. His 297 passing yards per game are good enough to lead the ACC, and ranks 11th best in the entire Football Bowl Subdivision. Ponder also leads the conference in total offense with 317 total yards per game. That number is better than his nearest competitor in the league (Wake Forest’s Riley Skinner) by more than 25 yards. In addition to his gaudy yardage totals, he’s put up a 67.7 completion percentage, which is an sizable improvement over his 55.7 completion percentage of a season ago. Another threat Ponder poses is the ability to be elusive in the pocket and avoid pressure from defensive linemen. While his scrambling ability hasn’t always translated to big chunks of rushing yardage — Ponder only has
123 rushing yards — opposing defenders know what that extra time to find a receiver can do to a secondary. “He’s a very good quarterback. He’s able to use his feet to get out of trouble,” UNC safety Deunta Williams said. “The one thing I like the most is when people are pressuring him, he scrambles, but he scrambles with his eyes down the field.” But while those statistics are impressive, it’s Ponder’s ball security that vaulted him to the next level as a quarterback. The Colleyville, Texas, native has thrown just one interception this season, way down from his 13 picks a season ago. And he arrives in Chapel Hill this Thursday on a roll. Ponder had the best game of his college career in his last start against Georgia Tech, when he passed for five touchdowns and 359 yards. On the strength of completing 26 of his 36 passes, he led Florida State to 44 points, but the Seminoles’ defense didn’t provide him with any help. The Yellow Jackets scored 49 points to turn his prolific performance into a forgettable footnote. That’s been the story of the year for Ponder and FSU, and largely why his contributions have been overlooked
on the national stage. While Florida State’s offense has been one of the ACC’s most consistent performers, its defense constantly forgets to show up to games. The Seminoles are dead last in total defense, and Ponder and the offense have not quite been good enough so far this season to overcome that liability. Ponder may have a little more trouble picking apart a secondary than usual, however, when he meets a UNC defense that is the stingiest in the conference. The Tar Heels have allowed just 125 passing yards per game, and stringing the ball past the arms of Deunta Williams, Kendric Burney and Co. will be no easy task. But don’t make the mistake of thinking Ponder won’t make a few dents in those impressive defensive numbers for UNC. His worst passing output of the season was 195 yards against BYU, and he has thrown for more than 300 yards in three of FSU’s six games. “You’ve got to stay on your coverage until the whistle blows and pretty much a little bit after that,” cornerback Kendric Burney said. “We know he’s going to be the best quarterback we’ve faced all year, and probably the best since I’ve been here.”

Historic night a meeting of strengths, weaknesses By Mark Thompson
SportSaturday Assistant editor
TV/Radio: TV coverage will be on ESPN. Radio coverage will be provided by WCHL 1360 AM and WRDU 106.1. It’s Thursday Night Football in Chapel Hill. For one night, ESPN will set its base camp at Kenan Stadium, and the nation will gather around its televisions to watch the Tar Heels take on the Seminoles of Florida State. The stadium will be loud, the lights will be bright, and Big and Rich will be there to sing the famous Thursday Night Football song. OK, so that last part isn’t true, but the rest is. T he matchup be tween Nor th Carolina and Florida State features two struggling teams with two different problems. UNC has the ACC’s best scoring defense, while simultaneously having the league’s worst offense. Against Virginia, the Tar Heel offense could only muster three points while the defense struggled to keep North Carolina in contention. In a nail-biter against Connecticut, the defense bailed out the offense with four quarters of tenacious defense.
Florida State’s problems are the exact opposite. Its total defense is last in the ACC, while it has the league’s best offense. Seminoles quarterback Christian Ponder threw for five touchdowns and 359 yards against Georgia Tech, but FSU still fell to the Yellow Jackets when its defense allowed 49 points. North Carolina’s most recent opponent was Georgia Southern, a team it was able to beat handily. But Florida State will prove to be much more of a challenge for UNC’s offense, and whether or not the Tar Heel offense can overcome that challenge could be the difference. Ponder has had an outstanding year, but UNC’s defense should hold well and forfeit a manageable amount of points if history is any indication. North Carolina has given up only one touchdown through the air. Whatever transpires, it is an intriguing matchup — the league’s worst offense against the worst defense, and the best offense against the best defense. The old cliche is that defense wins championships. But UNC’s defense isn’t impregnable. In order to get the win, the Tar Heels’ offense must produce.
predictions for TODAY’S game Florida State vs. North Carolina (2-4)
Kenan Stadium, 8 p.m.
(4-2)
HEAD TO HEAD UNC offense vs. FSU D
This is the key stat — in FSU’s last two games, the Seminoles’ defense has one sack and no interceptions. UNC’s running backs should move the ball pretty well, and North Carolina’s offensive line should give T.J. Yates enough time to make passes. Edge: UNC
FSU offense vs. Here we have a match up of the ACC’s best offense and defense. Even with UNC D
UNC’s defensive strength, this should be a shootout. UNC’s defense will slow down FSU marginally, but it will still give up some big plays. Edge: FSU
Special Teams
Intangibles
North Carolina has a better punt returner (Da’Norris Searcy), punter (Grant Schallock) and kicker (Casey Barth), and neither team has a game-changing kick returner. Also, FSU’s kicker, Dustin Hopkins, has missed four extra points. Seriously, Florida State? Edge: UNC A buildup of explosive energy surrounds this historic game. On paper UNC should win, but FSU head coach Bobby Bowden has been under scrutiny, and his players will put everything on the line to defend him. Edge: FSU.

Defense controls blazing speed with technique By Mark Thompson
Assistant SportSaturday Editor
North Carolina’s defensive makeup is full of fast, quick, powerful players — and they aren’t afraid to say it. “We’re looking for very explosive guys — guys with great quickness and power,” defensive coordinator
Everett Withers said. There may be no better incarnation of that speed and power than sophomore linebacker Zach Brown. Brown ran a 4.28 40-yard dash earlier this year, impressive for a 6-foot-2, 220-pound frame. But Brown isn’t the only player on the defense with remarkable

athleticism and speed for his position. Linebacker Quan Sturdivant has clocked a 4.43 40-yard dash, and defensive end Robert Quinn ran a 4.51, which broke Julius Peppers’ record for a D-lineman. “On the defensive line, speed is good because when you get off and you want to pass rush, you want to beat the offensive lineman to a point,” senior defensive end E.J. Wilson said. “Offensive lineman are taught to take two steps back so they can set to block you, but if you can get into that comfort zone before those two steps then that will be important.” Speed can enhance any player because it allows him to flow to the point of attack on the field faster. But even with a plethora of fast defensive players, Withers knows that having speed is only as good as the mind that controls it. “It doesn’t matter physically if they can’t do it mentally,” he said. “With having great speed and great quickness, you have to have the ability to learn and do the things that you can do to play the defense that you are in.” Withers referred to the Georgia Tech game as an example of the team’s mental breakdown. The Tar Heels gave up 317 rushing yards against Georgia Tech, a stat that wouldn’t have been affected by an ounce more of speed.
dth file/Andrew Dye
LB Quan Sturdivant and the UNC defense are one of the fastest units in the country. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 1 in the ACC yardage allowed. “That’s the equalizer in big ball games,” Withers said. “It doesn’t usually come down to speed and quickness. It comes down to fundamentals and technique.” But UNC’s technique hasn’t been too bad. Their attention to detail is one of the reasons they have the ACC’s top-ranked defense. “Technique will help you out a lot,” cornerback Kendric Burney said. “It will make up for a lot of speed.”
Whether the players have topend speed or not, many of them have game speed. It may be how fast they can get to the ball or how fast they can turn and change directions. Those kinds of instincts are often products of game knowledge, Withers said. “If we’re playing fast, and we’re playing fast at 11 positions, it means we know what to do,” he said.

Searcy’s play a testament to grandmother’s life By Anna Kim
ing, he’s crazy.”
Family matters
Virginia Searcy is the reason for the No. 21 across Da’Norris Searcy’s back and a cross tattooed on his right arm. “She was a real inspiration to me,” Da’Norris said. “She always told me to never give up. Never let anyone turn you away. Just keep pushing.” Virginia Searcy was born in 1921, the inspiration for his number. She raised 15 children — one of whom was Da’Norris’ father. And until she passed away in 2001, she was also one of her grandson’s best friends. “That’s a bond that nobody can break,” his mother Tracy said. When his grandmother’s health began to falter, she moved in with the Searcys. There Da’Norris began his favorite childhood tradition. “We had our special date, our Monday date,” he said. “The only day of the week I could stay up. We watched Monday Night Football together.” When asked who he would most like to have dinner with, Searcy answered Walter Payton, God, Sean Taylor and his grandmother. “I feel like I put a little inspiration in his life, but his grandmother is really who influenced him,” his father, Donald, said. “My mom raised 15 kids by herself. He saw adversity. Sometimes they had to go without. He just admired the woman.” When Virginia died in 2001, Da’Norris was in eighth grade. “It was difficult coming home and not hearing her voice,” he said. So he acquired a tattoo to remind him of the woman who came to every one of his baseball games — but never saw him play the game they loved. “She couldn’t come to football games because it was too cold,” he said. “But I know she’s watching me now.”
‘Never give up’
D a ’ Mo n t a i s j u s t o n e o f Da’Norris’ three younger siblings. He talks to his big brother on the phone every day — and Da’Monta knows there is no question as to why he is calling. “Grades.” Da’Norris’ concern for his younger brother came as no surprise to his father. “I told him, ‘You might be the one to take this family on,’” Donald said. “He believes it in his heart.” Da’Norris credits a strong sense of familial obligation to his grand-

Da’Norris Searcy (21) has taken on a larger role in 2009 for UNC’s defense. He wears No. 21 to honor his grandmother, Virginia. football team.” At Towers High School, Searcy emerged as a standout at defensive back and running back. In eight games his senior year, he rushed for 1,607 yards and 16 touchdowns. When his team’s quarterback quit at halftime, Searcy suited up and threw for 199 yards and rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown. What can this kid not do, Searcy’s father was asked. His answer? Stop. He recalled his son’s reaction to a knee injury. “I kicked him out of the game for two weeks,” Donald said. “He cried. He fussed. Because if he ain’t play-
At UNC, crazy takes on a slightly different form for Searcy. “You know, we’ ll be chilling in the living room somewhere and he’ll go missing,” cornerback Kendric Burney said. “You’ll go look and realize that he done took all the sheets off the bed, all the pillow cases off the bed, he done threw pretty much everything on the floor.” But times at UNC were not always so upbeat for Searcy. Before this season, Searcy played primarily on special teams and as a reserve safety behind the departed second-team All-America Trimane Goddard. “Him being such a big superstar in high school, it was a big change,” his father said. “He would call me, feeling down. I’d say, ‘Look man. You can’t. There’s a plan in front of you.’” That’s when he remembered to never give up. Just keep pushing. In the last game of the season, he received his chance. Searcy started in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, recording a careerhigh 10 tackles and two sacks. This season, Searcy starts as a safety and the team’s leading punt returner. He ranks third in the ACC for punt return average. “I’m very excited,” Searcy said. “I’ve proven to the coaches I can do more. Coming into training camp, I wanted to get the coaches to trust me. Now they trust that I can do it.”
GO HEELS!
Gridiron beginnings Searcy might have grown up in Decatur, Ga., but he was raised on the football field. He spent his childhood glued to his father’s side, a former high school All-America and semi-professional football player. Except on one occasion. When Da’Norris was 3 years old, his father awoke in a panic. During his nap between his night shift and day practice, his toddler had escaped. “‘Norris? Norris?’ I was calling his name,” he said. “I looked across the street, and he was with the

mother, who also made sure all family members were accounted for at Christmas dinner. “She always told me, you act like a man and you’ll be treated like one,” he said. Before Searcy left Georgia, his father left him with one final piece of advice. “You’ve got to make a statement for yourself,” his father said. Da’Norris Searcy has already chosen that statement. That’s why he bears it on his jersey. It reminds him to never give up, to never let anyone turn him away. Just keep pushing.
