For most college students, spring break consists of long nights, endless partying, drinking massive amounts of alcohol and not remembering what you did the night before. If that doesn’t sound like an ideal break to you, there are other options. Spring break alternatives can be about giving back to your community, helping others and making a difference. There are many options for students to choose from, ranging from building homes with Habitat For Humanity, conserving the environment with EarthWatch, teaching in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe or Latin America, to providing health care for low-income communities. As a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, volunteers can help build homes either locally or globally by joining the Global Village volunteer program. Volunteers can choose to work on house construction, renovation or disaster relief. Although the cost of an international trip is pricey ($1,200), volunteers can fundraise to pay for the cost of the trip, which includes meals, accommodations, transportation and

medical and emergency evacuation. “Going on a Global Village trip ... changes your perception and makes you look at the world from someone else’s view point,” said David Minich, Habitat for Humanity’s director of volunteer engagement. If conserving the environment is more your thing, EarthWatch has a variety of opportunities for their volunteers to participate. Volunteers can either help in combating environmental issues or protecting animals from extinction. Some options available to students include: helping the cheetah in a race against extinction in Namibia, saving the cultural treasures of a Roman villa, following bottle nose dolphins in Mediterranean waters to combat the main threats to their ecosystem and protecting endangered sea turtles in Mexico. EarthWatch offers college group expeditions and a reduced student rate. Cross Cultural Solutions is a volunteer program that is more community oriented. It offers trips to Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Ghana, Russia and Peru, among others. Volunteers can choose to care for children, people with disabilities or assist teachers of special education with their students. For those interested in healthcare, volunteers can

help at small health clinics and understaffed hospitals serving low-income communities. Volunteers can also work with underserved communities by helping at-risk teens and woman striving to earn income for their families. I-to-i is a one-stop shop that allows students to explore their volunteering options and find a perfect match. Volunteer opportunities range from volunteering with wildlife, building, community development and teaching English in Africa, Nepal, India, Thailand or Cambodia. I-to-i has student friendly prices starting at $275. “For college students looking to do more than sleep in late, the volunteer vacation can help them learn about their careers and themselves,” said Lee Ann Johnson, i-to-i managing director. For students who would rather not spend money and volunteer locally, there are a variety of ways to get involved and explore their options. There are various Web sites, like Volunteercenter.org, that allow you to search projects by region, area of interest and the length of time you want to volunteer. It also offers a list of ongoing projects and agencies for you to choose from. Another helpful Web site is Volunteermatch.org, which makes it “eas-

ier for good people and good causes to connect.” The Volunteer and Service Center on campus also offers a volunteering opportunity during spring break which is the Cesar Chavez Day field cleaning. In partnership with the Volunteer Center of Orange County and Second Harvest Food Bank, this event brings volunteers together along with elementary school children to pick crops in a field in Irvine. All fruits and vegetables gathered go to people in need, said Amy

Mattern, coordinator the Volunteer and Service Center. This event fills up fast, so volunteers are encouraged to sign up ahead of time. If you’re finally tired of the typical spring break – drink, party, sleep, repeat – do something more rewarding with your time off and help those in need. You’ll make lasting memories and you won’t have to worry about embarrassing pictures of being passed out with Sharpie drawings scribbled all over your face surfacing on Facebook.

Spring break is finally here. Most students like to get as far away from campus as possible, but this can be a financial dilemma. While most of us cannot afford to go to Europe, California is home to some destinations that are sure to please anyone. Students vacationing locally can: camp, fish, snowboard, ski, tan at the beaches, travel big cities or small towns, go to amusement parks, shop, surf, relax or seek out an adventure of their own. All of these simple activities are within 100 miles of Cal State Fullerton. If students are looking for a more upscale spring break with a lot less nudity than other destinations or are just looking to relax, then take a closer look at Palm Springs. About 75 miles east of Orange

County, Palm Springs has been working hard to clean up its image and attract tourists for the last 10 years. Thongs are illegal, as well as billboards. These days, Palm Springs prides itself on catering to golfers, retirees and the young Hollywood elite. You’re less likely to find a wet Tshirt contest and more likely to find a world-class golf course or tennis court. There is never a wrong time to explore the streets of San Francisco. Most people know San Francisco for the amazing array of sights and sounds. San Francisco rests on a series of hills, giving the city a distinct look and feel but also a level of difficulty when trying to park or even walk. Having a car is not essential while visiting because of the proximity of most popular attractions – in fact, it’s recommended you don’t bring one since it often takes hours to

find a parking spot, or you might be forced to pay a lot of money to park somewhere in the city. The most popular attractions in San Francisco are Chinatown, the Mission district, the Castro district, SoMa (south of Market Street), Financial District, Haight-Ashbury, Nob Hill, North Beach, Fisherman’s Warf, Alcatraz, Richmond, the Marina, Downtown and the Tenderloin. There are likely a few left off this list, but these are the main districts to be aware of when traveling. If these locations are a little too busy, there are numerous cafes, bookstores, record shops, concerts, sporting events and parks to see. San Francisco is a place for all ages and interests because of its hip vibe and relaxed atmosphere. Can’t afford the train, gas or plane ticket to San Francisco? Then why not consider going to Los Angeles? LA is not a one-stop destination like many other maneuverable cities.

The attractions that you will be most interested in are spread out over miles; those who don’t have a car will be greatly disappointed. The system of highways and freeways to get to these destinations are so confusing and congested with traffic you may want to skip on the car and stay in just one place in the city. Keep in mind that it’s important to decide where you want to go before you actually make your trip. To aid your decision-making process, let me just tell you about the beaches that are well known and worth checking out. Venice Beach is everything you’ve seen in the movies and more: a smorgasbord of people, performers, musicians, prostitutes, drug dealers, fitness freaks and everything in between. Years ago, Venice Beach was named “Playland of the Pacific” and it still lives up to this title. This beach is beautiful and clean despite being in the heart of LA. Scared of Venice Beach? Then consider hanging out at Santa Monica beach. The beach is packed in the spring but if tanning is not what you want to do then try the

3rd Street Promenade. Just walking distance from the shore is a pedestrian mall with shopping, bars, cafes, stores and movie theaters. You can also check out the Santa Monica pier, the oldest “pleasure pier” on the West Coast; it’s packed with carnival attractions and fresh seafood. Most beaches in LA are sparsely populated and largely polluted. If you want to see beautiful people and things to do then next on the list is Malibu. The men and women of “Baywatch” made LA beaches famous and Malibu is definitely a typical Southern California beach with all the perks. The city is spread out and so are the attractions, so the nightlife will be a task to find. It is hard to walk anywhere, so forget about bar hopping. Hot nightclubs are located all over the city and the same goes for the swanky bars, but maybe you’ll see one of the Osbornes or another semi-celebrity. Remember that spring break is a time for students and faculty to relax, not a time to blow next semester’s tuition on a crazy adventure.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing in the trees and everyone is getting ready for a week of ingesting enough alcohol to power a Prius. Instead of relying on that always cheap and effective Natty light solution to get your buzz on, here is a list of the best seasonal beers for spring break. So go ahead, indulge yourself a little with one of these classy brews. Who knows? You might skip your usual “morning after” visit to the porcelain god. Best beer for an afternoon tailgating session at Angel stadium: Try a nice crisp, citrusy Hefeweizen to go along with that jumbo hot dog. Our favorite pick was Blue

Moon, a classy alternative to the other beers available at Angel stadium. If you’re going to spend $9 on a beer, it had better taste like gold. Or go with the always-classic Corona Light with a slice of lime, which at 109 calories is a healthier alternative to that extra order of nachos. Best beer for a day at the beach: Although you might have to hide the beers in your cooler once you walk out onto the sand, our favorite summertime beer pick was Pete’s Wicked Strawberry Blonde, a pale blonde lager with a sweet strawberry flavor that makes your mouth water with its fresh, clean taste. Any specialty fruit beer would do the trick here, along with a nice snack of freshly-cut pineapple, watermelon or kiwi to ac-

Best beer for a barbeque cookoff with friends: Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale is a perfect outdoor beer to share with friends while waiting for those burgers and shish kababs to finish grilling. Fill up a cooler with these amber-colored beauties, or try a stiffer lager like Samuel Adam’s Noble Pilsner, which is brewed with all five noble hops for a great companion to that ear of corn on the cob. Best beer for a game of beer pong: If you’re challenging some friends to a game of beer pong, step it up a notch with an 18-pack of Bud Light Lime. Although this lager still falls into the category of cheap brew at around $20 a case, the light lime flavor added to the clear carbonation makes for a surprising twist, and may help you sink that last ball into the other team’s awaiting cup. Best beer for a sure-fire hangover: The winner is a tie between the two worst-offending American lagers: Bud Light and Coors Light. The problem with these watered-down beverages is that it takes about six or seven of these suckers to even know that you’re drinking beer. And by that time, you’re already drunk, so you might as well keep ingesting the empty calories. If you’re trying to make a fool out of yourself in front of that cute girl at your friend’s party, or wind up passed out on a couch with writing all over your face, then Bud Light or Coors Light is the way to go.

One week of freedom. One week of waking up at two in the afternoon. One week of no obligatory brain usage. This is spring break. What better way to celebrate a week of leisure than with parties? Lots and lots of parties. Invite all of your friends and make room on your couch because this list of themes will make any guest want to stick around for more. Beer Olympics To start off Spring Break with a bang, go all out with the Beer Olympics. Gather up as many competitors as you can to section off into teams. Create team names, shirts and chants as you face off in games like flip cup, beirut (beer pong), quarters and power hour. Don’t get too competitive though; remember there’s always tomorrow night. Recommended featured beverage: Bud Light; the cheaper the better because you will need a lot of it. Ugly Pants Party Take an adventure through your parents’ old wardrobes and don’t be afraid of what you see. Do your ugly pants justice with an MC Hammer dance competition and a break dancing showdown. This theme has no limits except those of your imagination, and as long as the pants are ugly, they are welcome! Recommended featured beverage: Punch in the Pants. 1 ounce lime flavored Rum 1 ounce orange flavored Rum 3 ounces orange soda 1 splash of triple sec Blend ingredients with ice and serve in a highball glass. It doesn’t have to be real but it’s got to be on once you walk through the door. Keep your costumes interesting with ideas like Bill Nye, the Internet or Beavis and Butthead. I went to New Orleans … there was a big party… One of us got separated… Someone had taken her to a back alley and stabbed her and left her there to die. We ended up finding her and had her taken to the hospital… She ended up being fine.

I had planned my trip, booked a flight … I missed my flight because I woke up too late, so I didn’t get to go.

Campus resources availability Spring break is finally here and students can finally get a break from instructors, assignments and homework. However, what about the students who take their spring break vacation as an opportunity to catch up on school work? For them, finding resources can be difficult and why waste a drive if you can avoid it? With Caesar Chavez day Wednesday, March 24 and a furlough day Friday, March 26, students will only have three days to utilize the school’s resources for research or reading. • All of the following computer labs will be closed during the spring break holiday: Computer Science Open Lab Mainframe Computer Lounge McCarthy Commons Modern Language Media Center Opportunity Center Open Lab • Food Services: All on-campus food services will be closed, including the Titian Student Union, although vending machines and ATMs can still be accessed. • The Academic Advisement Center will maintain regular hours, but because of the holiday on Wednesday and Friday’s furlough day, they will be open only three days this week: Monday: 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Thursday: 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. • The Pollak Library will be open for students to use resources, check out books and use the only computer lab. Spring is a time of rebirth, a time to start fresh and a time to put away the big heavy coats that have been everyone’s main line of defense against the brutal weather of the last few weeks – at least in Southern California, that is. It’s time to shed dark winter clothes and bring out the fun pieces of clothing that make a statement in the bright spring months ahead. Play with splashes of color. That is said with a word of caution – don’t over do it. Just because it’s spring doesn’t mean “go crazy with all kinds of colors at once.” In the end, it’s a very hard look to pull off. Black is a great way to contrast color and make it pop. Black makes color stand out, but shouldn’t be used all the time. Color isn’t something to fear, but to use. Ladies, an outfit worth trying this season might include a cute tunic dress with some gladiator flats and a long-chained or strapped purse. Whether the tunic dress is simple or designed with funky and playful patterns is a choice depending on personal style, but remember, keep it short and show off your legs. Also, play with some color and don’t just stick with darks. After all, it is spring time. Instead of trying to bring back last spring’s gladiator sandals, find a more simplistic style of gladiator flats with less straps and buckles. To compliment the outfit, wear a dark purse that has a long strap or chain. The contrast of the dark cloth or leather of the purse will make the bright tunic stand out that much more. For the brave and confident, forgo the gladiators in favor of some Native American inspired ankle boots. Another outfit ladies might want to try is the combination of a white v-neck and skinny jeans with a leather or utility jacket. This outfit is more simplistic and not that hard to pull off. The trick here lies in how one styles the outfit. Instead of getting a regular white v-neck, go for the oversized look. An oversized white v-neck draped on the body will look great in contrast to the skinny denim worn. The skinny denim shouldn’t be a light color, but a dark pair – preferably black.

Another type of bottoms worth exploring are “jeggings,” a combo of jeans and leggings. They’re super cute and made with a great material that feels like designer denim. To tie the outfit together, throw on a fitted dark leather jacket or a fitted utility jacket. The most recent fashion weeks showcased a variety of utility jackets on the runway in mostly ready-to-wear shows. This outfit can be dressed up by simply throwing on a pair of heels – not stilettos, but rather pumps – for a night out on the town. Or if wearing this outfit to school, throw on a pair of black or dark gray boots that have a big metal buckle on the side. The last outfit I’ll recommend to the ladies is a crewneck with a floral skirt and a denim jacket. The crewneck should be dark and oversized, preferably one that hangs off the shoulder. Be warned, cute and flattering floral skirts are hard to come by, especially the suggested highwaisted style that would compliment this outfit to its fullest extent. First pick out the skirt, and style the rest of the outfit around it. It will be ten times easier to find the crewneck that matches the skirt instead of visa versa. Finally, put on a destroyed light-denim jacket and style the sleeves accordingly. For men it’s a little different. Most men are inept when it comes to picking outfits, let alone styling them. Here’s one tip that will make life easier: Always remember to start from the ground up. Start with the shoes. Shoes are easy to work with, especially when a guy can wear the same shoes for an entire year without anyone really noticing. Let’s start out with a simple outfit. When styled properly, this outfit is comfortable, but looks puttogether. Remember, start with the shoes. The best pair of slip-ons to go with this outfit are dark earth-toned ones. Next, grab a pair of dark slim jeans and cuff them up once or twice. Layering is key in spring fashion, plus it’s always more fun, and looks so much better than just wearing one shirt. To finalize this look put on a white button-up and throw a destroyed solid sweatshirt, preferably a light colored one, over

it. Now for a few style pointers: Just like the upturned cuffs of the slim denim, do the same with the sleeves of the sweatshirt to expose the longsleeved button up just a little. Also, pull the bottom of the white buttonup out of the sweatshirt just a little to once again expose the shirt. This will add contrast to the outfit. The next outfit is a little more complicated than the first, but once again will take little effort. Start with a black pair of slip-on shoes. The bottoms take a little more guts, and require someone who is comfortable with making a statement and, to be quite blunt, their sexuality. Metrosexuality isn’t a bad thing. Find a pair of fitted boot cut or slim destroyed denim. The denim should be a lighter color with tons of holes and bleach stains. Next, throw on a dark colored solid polo. This is a preppy look that is always welcomed with arms wide open around springtime. Although, one word of advice with this outfit: Do NOT pop the collar on the polo – that was so spring 2004. The last outfit is the most complicated and should be reserved for dates, or dressier birthday dinners for friends – don’t wear it to school. Start with a pair of dark slip-ons, either dark blue or dark gray, but not black. The bottoms should be a pair of fitted khaki woven pants. Put on a dark leather belt – brown would look best – that has a small metal buckle. The final touch to the outfit is a long-sleeved button-up denim shirt. Yes, a denim shirt. The shirt should be a dark color – either blue or gray – and most importantly, fitted. Try to find a shirt with buttons that contrast the material used in making the shirt. Styling pointers for this outfit includes making sure the shirt is tucked in and skip buttoning the top two buttons. Don’t forget, living in sunny Southern California means one thing: throwing on a pair of goldrimmed aviators with dark lenses adds the perfect touch to any of the above outfits. Always remember the most important rule of fashion: Be true, be comfortable and don’t be afraid to express feelings through outfits and styling.
