The Triangle

The Triangle is an art school at the confluence of the Los Angeles River and the Arroyo Seco River in Los Angeles, California. The confluence is one of the most congested junctions within the city; comprised of 6 different network systems, the atmosphere within is highly urban. At this point, a school is inserted to create a culture more concentrated than the other sprawling neighborhoods of the city. Three distinct facades individually respond to the context, each side housing program that benefits from its surroundings. A large courtyard creates a communal space embedded within nature and reintroduces greenery to the site. The architectural concept is centered on art that learns from the unique context, educates the residing students, converses with the neighboring infrastructure, and alters the buildings appearance in conjunction with the ever-changing nature of the city.

Open Gym

A new type of recreation center focuses on whole body workouts to train and build strength. Positioned in the booming Power and Light District of Kansas City, the center pulls people in from the immediate surroundings by raising itself up from the ground and engaging the sidewalk. The raised form glows in order to attract gym-goers from the interstate, and is low in profile to contrast the surrounding context. Inside, pools and rock climbing walls are sunk below street level to create a public entry mezzanine overhead. Above that, multi-purpose studios and equipment spaces overlook the programmatic elements below. The project pulls its many spaces together through section based sight lines and light that penetrates the upper form to illuminate the entire structure.

Mobile Memorial

The Mobile Memorial transcends the static nature of its typology by traveling between the location of traumatic events and offering space for people to grieve. An architecture that leads many lives, the memorial goes through a life cycle on each site where it is born, occupied, stripped down, and then sent away, its lasting memory preserved in a grove of trees. The form mimics an ancient hypostyle hall, with an expansive interior space softly illuminated from the outside. In this instance, the site is the scene of a school shooting at MarysvillePilchuch High School outside of Seattle, WA.

Sacred Formation

If the creation of architecture is the assembly of disparate parts, what informs how these pieces go together? At the level of site, the process responds to macro moves like cosmological alignments and topographical features. Contextual forces shape what was or can be, and give meaning to form developed through guerrilla process. At the micro scale, individual spaces respond to those larger forces and are detailed through the act of delineation. In the end the architecture is a product of time and space.

Off-The-Shelf Chair

The Off-The-Shelf Chair focuses on the craft of simple componentry. Easily accessible lumber is used to keep costs down, and Mid-Century Scandinavian furniture inspires the details of the design. The chair is broken down into four elements: the back, seat, and two connected profiles that join the legs and back supports. Outer edges of the profiles are rounded to soften the appearance, and the plywood back curves around your body. This first prototype was finished with a satin varnish and is currently being used as an office chair.

Olson Kundig Internship

I had the opportunity to intern at Olson Kundig from June to December 2015. During those six months, I worked on many different projects types including renovations, new construction and installations. My work was focused on computer modeling/drafting, rendering, physical modeling, and preparation of content for team meetings. I also participated in non-traditional tasks within the firm, such as a photoshoot, designing a pop-up park for Park(ing) Day, and helping construct an exhibit for the Seattle Art Fair. In addition to the assigned projects and tasks, the intern program emphasizes exploration with weekly field trips, presentations, and various design-related activities.
