Pennsylvania Holstein Profiles The Pennsylvania Holstein Association 839 Benner Pike - State College, PA 16801 Name ____________________________________________________________________
What a Spring it has been! Your Association, like each of you, has had to make many decisions, more quickly than we would have liked to. Our biggest decision was to postpone hosting the 2020 National Holstein Convention. This decision was made in consultation with staff at Holstein USA, along with staff at the Lancaster Marriott and members of our planning committee. Our final decision really came down to the health and wellbeing of those who would attend the convention. Also, the fact that so much work and planning has gone into hosting the convention, we want people from across the country to be able to come and enjoy our Pennsylvania hospitality. Pennsylvania Holstein will be hosting the 2021 National Holstein Convention, June 19-24, 2021 at the Lancaster Marriott & Convention Center, mark your calendars and plan to join with us in June 2021. We will continue “Leading the Holstein Vision”. Pennsylvania Holstein and our local associations have many of our usual activities planned for the summer including picnics, county shows, fairs and regional shows. With the current situation of closures and slow re-openings etc., please watch our social media: Facebook – Pa Holstein Association or website: www.paholsteins.com for changes and updates to our current printed schedule of events. The 2021 PA Holstein State Convention hosted by our friends in Southeast PA will be a combined Junior and Adult Convention weekend, mark

your calendars for February 5-7, 2021. Plan to be at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Reading, PA to join in the fun and educational opportunities a combined convention program will offer. As Pennsylvania Holstein moves forward, changes will be happening within the Association. The leadership has been studying and working to meet those challenges. There will be changes in how we staff the Association, our membership dues structure and PA Junior Holstein membership dues. We will continue to actively seek input from members, through our state committee structure, the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. We need to be positive about our industry and the many opportunities that are available to those who want to remain involved and active. We need to work together, not just when good things happen, but when we face those tough and exhaustive times. We can continue as a member service organization as long as you, the membership supports your leaders in their efforts to develop programs and activities that will help us all improve our home operations and the industry as a whole. By working together now, we can look for opportunities in the future. As I look to retire from the Associa-

tion on September 30, 2020, I want to thank the membership for the opportunities my career and positions with Pennsylvania Holstein Association has afforded me. I have met many dignitaries, government officials and agricultural leaders from across the United States and the world. The most enjoyment for me though, has been visiting with members and dairy farmers, at your farms, at shows, at sales and at county Association functions. You all have been so gracious and welcoming. Everyone has always been willing to visit and share ideas, picnic baskets, snacks and hearing what your families have been doing. I have had the pleasure to work with 19 outstanding Presidents and Executive Committees, who have always had the membership first in their decision making. I have also worked with a most dedicated staff over the years, who have all been friends. We have shared many opportunities and experiences, thanks to: Bill Nichol, Steve Wilson, Jeff Harding, Bill Allen and David Lentz for guiding and putting up with me. Also there have been quite a few ladies that have kept us all straight in the office, but I want to thank Tracy Wellar and Leslie Peters, who have been with us since the 1990’s, I appreciate all they have done to make us look good! As we move into our next phase of life, the Raney family THANKS YOU, for 36 years of friendship and memories. We wish you all the very best as you continue to supply the world with the best genetics and most nutritious dairy foods from the Holstein cow!

Houser’s Happenings - Jim Houser
PA Holstein President Dear Pennsylvania Holstein Members,
It’s that time of year again, as most of you are or have been planting and maintaining your crops. I would like to introduce myself as Jim Houser of Spring Mills, Pennsylvania, President elect of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. I have been actively involved in this Association for 30 years, as I maintain a 70 cow milking facility with my wife, children, sisters, and nephew. I am always looking to teach others about cows anytime I have an opportunity, and try to encourage real milk and dairy products as much as I can. While the Corona Virus has been affecting our industry, we have still been very busy. With the addition of our new executive committee members, Patricia Kitchen and John Wetmore, we have had regular virtual meetings discussing the trying times we are experiencing. In March we unfortunately had to cancel our State Holstein Spring Show along with the Holstein farm clean up day, and the Know What You Buy heifer sale, while counties have been canceling their annual banquets. Pennsylvania will now be hosting the National Holstein Convention in 2021 after having to cancel it for this summer, and we thank Ohio for willing to work with us in order to make this change. I was happy to be invited to the Mifflin County Holstein Banquet early this year and see all of the accomplishments their adults and juniors have been achieving. After successful junior and adult state conventions, I would like to thank the Central Region and all of the committees, staff, volunteers, and sponsors who helped to achieve this success. Congratulations to everyone who put in hard work to win awards. I have watched my children
put in countless hours of studying and paperwork, and myself and peers the same, I know that conventions are lots of hard work. To hopefully boost attendance and supply new experiences, the junior and adult convention will be merged next year, taking place February 5th through 7th in Reading, Pennsylvania. As many of you have heard, Ken Raney, executive director of Pennsylvania Holstein, will be retiring this year after 37 years of service and hard work for our Association and our members. I would like to thank Ken for everything he has accomplished throughout his years, and wish him a happy retirement. Saying this, I am accepting applications to fill his positions. With all of our staff being so heavily involved in Junior activities throughout the years, it is becoming apparent that we must implicate Junior membership fees to help pay for the time and effort we put towards them. A $20 fee each year will be required in order to show at any state shows, compete at a state convention, or do any other state Holstein activities. Additionally, we are changing the membership schedule of the adults. Thank you to everyone who has agreed to be a chair or member of a committee this year, your commitment to our association is greatly appreciated. If anyone is interested in becoming a committee member, I encourage you to reach out to me or any executive committee members, as every voice is welcome. My goal for the Pennsylvania Holstein Association is to have it grow, help the current financial situation we are facing, and have it be here for generations to come. At a young age, my parents, Jay and Mary Houser, encouraged me and gave me a true passion for the Holstein cow, and I could not be more appreciative of them to get me involved in such a wonderful industry. Due to the passion they instilled inside me, I am the first second-generation President of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, following in my father’s footsteps. I am aware of the tragedies farmers are facing in these uncertain times, and my prayers are going to each and every one of you, however I know that we can get through these times together.
CELEBRATING ALL THINGS DAIRY This June Dairy Month, we toast our state’s essential dairy farmers. Together, let’s raise a glass of milk to all who are providing wholesome and enjoyable products to everyone, all year long.

No Surprise, Whole Milk is on the Rise
When consumers make their choice at the grocery store — where many types and fat levels of milk are available — more are choosing whole milk, a six-year trend. Whole milk has been making a comeback for the past six years, now representing 40 percent Increased of milk sales, as more consumers enjoy the more satisfying taste of full-fat dairy products. In fact, whole milk and 2% (Reduced Fat) milk combined account Shelf Space = for nearly 77 percent of milk sales. By comparison, Nonfat (Skim) and Increased Sales 1% (Lowfat) milk account for only 23 percent of milk sales. One of American Dairy Association North East’s retail programs involves working with dairy case managers to increase shelf space for real dairy. More space makes room for growing segments like whole, lactose-free and value-added milks, as well as whole-milk yogurt offerings, while helping retailers reduce lost sales from out-of-stock items.
Checkoff-funded Dairy Fat Research Proving Health Benefits National Dairy Council (NDC), a part of the dairy farmer-funded checkoff, has been the leader in funding and encouraging others to fund research on the importance of milkfat in the diet. Since 2002, they have conducted 64 studies on the value of dairy fat. Emerging evidence suggests a dietary approach that includes fuller fat dairy foods can fit within healthy eating patterns. One result of the NDC research on dairy fat is dairy checkoff partner McDonald’s switch to using real butter instead of margarine in 2015. The chain now uses an additional 700 million pounds of milk per year.

Pennsylvania Junior Holstein “PAL” of the Year The “PAL” Award is to recognize an adult leader, parent or friend who is always there for the youth program. The “PAL” Award is designed to thank an individual for their leadership, influence, and help in developing an outstanding youth program. Nominations for the award come from Junior Holstein members and the final selection of the winner is done by the Junior Executive Committee. This year’s recipient of the “PAL” award is Jennifer Boop, Millmont, PA. Jennifer has been involved with the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association since her days as a Junior member from Perry County. She was a two-time National Dairy Bowl winner, served as Secretary of the Junior Association and competed in numerous contests during her junior years. Jen graduated from Penn State with a degree in Ag Sciences. She was very involved in the Penn State Dairy Science Club, Alpha Zeta and was an Ag Advocate while at Penn State. Jen and her husband Doug Boop began to farm with Doug’s family in Millmont, PA. They now farm under the Heart & Soul prefix, milking 40 cows, raise chickens and serve as a satellite for Trans-Ova Genetics. Jennifer has served on the Pennsylvania Holstein Youth Committee, and has also chaired the committee. Mt-Glen Farms A special day...3 new EX-94 cows!
Mt-Glen Levi Fran (EX-94 3E)
Ben & Regina Jackson
Mt-Glen Adolph Jonah (EX-94) 5 generations of homebred cows
We are the Jackson family, located in the shadows of Mt. Pisgah in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Our breeding program focuses on balanced type with eye appeal, performance, transmitting ability, and longevity. When you can accomplish all of those things, it is amazing what the lifetime productivity of a cow can be. We want our cows and bulls to have these qualities, be easy to work with, and look good doing it. I was very fortunate to have been raised in a family dedicated to the Holstein breed. Growing up in Bradford County gave me many opportunities to serve our Holstein industry at an early age. My Holstein career continued at the state level where I served as Director, on the Executive Committee, and as President. Because of the advice and encouragement of many friends and family I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Holstein USA National Director, Region 2. I would be honored to serve our membership at a high level and I ask for your support. Respectfully, Dean Jackson

Pennsylvania Holstein Awards Hall of Fame Frank Connelly
Hall of Fame Paul Welk
The Pennsylvania Holstein Association welcomed Frank Connelly of Pennsylvania Furnace, Centre County into its Hall of Fame on Saturday, March 7, 2020 in Williamsport, PA. Frank was born in June 1944. He began helping on his family’s dairy farm, Fairbrook Farms with his parents and three siblings. He enjoyed the cow-side of farming at an early age and was eager to enroll in 4-H where he showed mainly Guernsey’s. He had the opportunity to show the Grand Champion at Harrisburg and then took his cow to Waterloo, Iowa for the National Cattle Congress. In 1976, Frank, better known to most as “Bud or Uncle Bud” entered into a partnership with his brothers Richard and Ronald. This began as a 100 cow Registered Holstein Farm and continued until the herd dispersed in 2010. Frank and Ron continue to crop farm today. Frank still cares for a few heifers at the farm. In the 1980’s, Fairbrook Farms owned Terra-View Rotate Princess EX-90. She had numerous embryos exported and many of her descendants entered A.I. Another homebred favorite was Fairbrook-Farm Elevation Venus who was Grand Champion at the very competitive Grange Fair National, a name Frank affectionately gave to his home fairgrounds and the show ring there that fueled his love for the tanbark. Fairbrook Farms also exhibited at the Central PA Championship Show and All-American Dairy Show. Some of Bud’s favorite show ring memories include a partnership with Paul Neer and Delmar and Larry Zimmerman on Walnut-Hills Logic Cathy, EX-95. Frank has also owned in partnership a number of All-American winners and nominees. Chris and Jen Hill have this to say about Frank “We always shared the same vision and appreciated Franks knowledge and eye to pick out a good one. His friendship and character are second to none!”
Paul Welk, Strasburg, Lancaster County, was inducted into the Pennsylvania Holstein Hall of Fame on Saturday, March 7, 2020. He grew up on his family farm and took part in the daily chores of the farm. He graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 1962. He married his wife Beverly on October 11, 1964. They are the proud parents of three children, Mark, Kelly and Matt. Paul was a herdsman for Lloyd Wolf of Little Britain, PA, for 12 years. As herdsman, he was allowed to keep 3-4 cows of his own. Under his management, the farm was named the top herd in Lancaster County for butterfat in 1967. The herd also won DHIA top herd award in 1969. When the Welk’s stared on their own in 1975 they bought a herd of cows and equipment and rented the farm where they now reside. Of the 70 head that were purchased at that time, only 9 were registered. Paul comments “We kept going to sales and buying a few registered animals as we could afford them. We sold two groups of 15 grades, and replaced them with registered animals.” 20 EX cows and over 100 VG cows bear “Welk-Crest” prefix. Welk-View Valiant Tiffany-EX-90, owned with Maurice Welk, was the third highest selling animal at $22,000 at the 1984 All-American Sale in Harrisburg, PA. She was the dam of Welk-View Jason Taffy, who sold at the All-American Sale in 1986 for $10,600. Paul and Matt Welk bought and developed Kristelle Skybuck DaphneEt - EX 94. She was the dam of WelkCrest Dundee Dezi-ET, Jr. All-American and Reserve All-American winter calf in 2010. Paul and his family always enjoyed competing at the Solanco Fair in Quarryville. There, they had Grand Champion Holstein honors six times and Premier Exhibitor and Breeder a number of times at the Lancaster

In addition to the show ring, Frank has served as both a Centre/Clinton County Board member and as a State Director of PA Holstein. He continues to serve in the Centre/Clinton Holstein Association. He is an avid supporter of the AllAmerican toasted cheese sandwich stand each year by donating cases of cheese. He donates hay for various county and state sales and is always willing to lend a hand at these sales. Frank has served as a ringman at the Grange Fair for almost as long as anyone can remember. Bud is a member of the Fairbrook United Methodist Church where he has served as Chairman of the Trustees and has also helped with the Church’s food stand at Ag Progress Days. He also enjoys snowmobiling, Corvettes and collecting guns. In June of 2018 at the age of 73, Bud married Barb Diebler. They enjoy traveling together and going to antique auctions. He buys guns and Barb buys antiques. Congratulations to Frank Connelly, Pennsylvania Holstein Association 2020 Hall of Fame Award winner.

County Holstein Show. In the Lancaster County Holstein Association, Paul served as Treasurer of the Association in the 1970’s. The family hosted the Lancaster Holstein Field Day in 1985. He was Sale Committee member for Lancaster County Club Sale and served as a Show Committee member. Also, Paul was a member of the DHIA Board of Directors. Paul worked for Powl’s Feed Service as a Feed Salesman starting in 1990 where he dedicated over 29 years to nutrition work for the dairy industry. He particularly enjoyed serving farms in Pennsylvania helping them with develop sound feeding programs. He retired from nutrition work in 2019. Currently, Paul and Beverly enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren and live in a home they built on a second farm they had purchased. Congratulations to Paul Welk, Pennsylvania Holstein Association 2020 Hall of Fame Award winner.
Wes Baxter was a Holstein breeder from Fredonia, Mercer County. He and his wife Ruth bred Wesholme Holsteins from the 1950s through the early 1970s. Wes was an early merchandiser of registered Holsteins, having 4 sales of his own besides holding farm sales for other dairymen in the Western PA and Eastern Ohio. Wes would manage these sales for the small breeders in the area. His wife Ruth would help him gathering pedigrees, assembling catalogs and do the advertising. It was a family affair and everyone contributed to the cause. According to the book Cows, Farms & Families - 100 Years of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, Wes Baxter had his first dispersal in 1959. It was the highest complete dispersal in the state, averaging $584 on 25 head. Eight years later, in November 1967, after establishing a second herd from animals Wes had selected, he had another dispersal that averaged $963 on 63 head. According to Horace Backus in Seed Stock, this sale was high for the year in Pennsylvania and the 3rd high sale in the U.S. for the year. Wesholme Martha Pontiac 2E90 topped the sale at $7,600 and was purchased by Allen Dairy Farms. Martha Pontiac was the 4th place 3-year-old (in a class of 29) 1967 Eastern National Show and was also

Grand Champion Northwest PA District Show 1967. This family established a 7- generation branch of Excellents and another branch with 8 generations of Excellent, with one VG-89 exception. Wes was a gifted cowman who could walk into another breeder’s barn and knew what cow he wanted to buy to take home and breed great cows from. After each sale, he went to look at others’ cattle to find the foundation of his next herd. Wes served as director and club president of the Mercer County Holstein Club. He was also the General Chairman for the 1970 Pennsylvania Holstein Convention. He was a GEM evaluator for the Holstein Association for 3 years. He served on the Sire Selection Committee for WPABC, the A.I. stud that eventually merged to become Atlantic Breeders Cooperative. Sandy Bochy, Wes’ daughter, said her Dad loved his registered Holsteins. All cows had their tails washed in the mornings and only the dirty tails got washed at night. Cows were in show condition 7 days a week, 365 days a year, in case someone stopped in to see the herd. Her dad always wore his white shirt and small black bow tie with striped bib overalls. When his brother Arthur was inducted into the PA Holstein Hall of Fame in 1990, he said, “The one that really deserves to be in the Hall of Fame is my brother Wes. He was the real breeder.” A strong advocate and promoter of the registered Holstein, Wes Baxter exemplified the kind of dedication it takes to breed great cows. Wes died in June 1973 of cancer at the age of 52. Wes Baxter, the 2020 PA Holstein Association Pioneer Memorial Award Winner. May-June 2020 - PA PROFILES - 33

superior animals. Just ask any breeders involved over the past 50 years in the polled Holstein sector and they will tell you that progress using traditional breeding methods can be painfully slow. The technology currently exists of a simple-to-use gene editing tool that if used in IVF labs could effectively turn the Holstein into a polled breed in one generation. So why isn’t it being used?

he arrival of genomics – the ability to look at a cross-section of the billions of genes that make up the bovine genome and make a prediction of its genetic potential – has transformed livestock breeding. However, the ability to effectively manipulate genes by adding a desired gene or removing undesirable genes from exactly the right site among those billions is an even greater challenge. New gene editing tools now make that possible. In 2013, some successful trials took place using a new and relatively simple-to-use tool known as CRISPR/Cas9. It essentially used the immune system of bacteria and adapted or reprogrammed it to put a cut in the genome at exactly the place where the genetic modification was desired.

Dairy Farm Coverage SPECIAL FARM PACKAGE 10® If you own a dairy farm you run the risk that disasters, such as a fire, windstorm or other catastrophic events, will interrupt your income. During that time you still have salaries, mortgage payments, utilities and other expenses to pay. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF… A fire demolishes your milking barn or parlor and also destroys equipment that you were renting for use on the farm. You search, but are unable to find an alternative location to milk your cows so you are forced to immediately sell your herd. To make matters worse, at auction you receive substantially less than the fair market value of your herd prior to the fire. • Are you prepared to stay in business without regular income from your dairy operation coming in? • Could your finances absorb a loss from selling your livestock unexpectedly or at a loss? • Do you know how you would be able to replace machinery that you were renting or borrowing? Specifically designed with dairy farmers in mind, our Farming and Business Income Loss, Livestock Loss of Value and Borrowed or Rented Farm Machinery endorsements are designed to keep your farm in business as you rebuild from a covered loss. EXPERIENCE, VERSATILITY and CONVENIENCE! Our SFP 10® policy combines personal, farm and business property and liability coverages - all under one policy. This simplifies your insurance protection. Dairy farms vary in size and scope, from the largest dairies to the smallest family farms, all having very different needs. The SFP 10® policy provides the flexibility to create a customized farm insurance package tailored to your needs. This ensures you’re getting what you want and not paying extra for insurance you don’t want.
OUR ENDORSEMENTS INCLUDE: Loss of Farm Business Income – Designed to help keep your farm afloat during a recovery period, this endorsement pays for the loss of farming income while your property is being restored, covering expenses while you are getting your dairy fully operating again. Livestock Loss of Value – If you need to sell livestock due to the temporary interruption of your dairy operation, this endorsement allows American National to pay for the loss of market value. This unique and important coverage is not available from all carriers. Borrowed or Rented Farm Machinery – Ever rent or borrow machinery for a job on your dairy farm? In addition to providing coverage for your owned machinery, this endorsement will allow American National to cover farm machinery that you borrow or rent from others for use in your farming operation.
