About the Cover
The New York State Holstein Show did not disappoint as one of the strongest shows in the country. Judge Callum McKinven excitedly gave a high five to Adam Liddle as he named Liddleholme Resur Lu-ET Grand Champion of the show. Roll-N-View Jacoby Emery-ET was named Intermediate and Grand Champion of the Junior show and was in the capable hands of Caitlin Bennett. See all the results starting on page 16.
From the Editor With the camera to my face in the middle of the ring, they announced the winner of the 150,000-pound class at the New York State Holstein show, Liddleholme Resur Lu-ET. The crowd let out a whoop and a holler and applause grew as one of New York’s favorite cows had made it back to the show ring and confirmed her spot in the champion drive. I quickly walked back to my computer as my throat began to tighten after witnessing a crowd of Holstein enthusiasts express their appreciation for one of their hometown heros. MELISSA HART When the cows came back out for Senior Champion, Lu was pulled out and stood as pretty as a picture while Callum McKinven deliberated his decision. Like a magnet, he was drawn to Lu and when he tapped her as Senior Champion, I knew he would probably take her all the way to Grand-- and he did. A cow with a following is a sentimental rush. Add in her beautiful ring presence and her timeless charm and you’ve got a cow with a faithful fan base. We know she won’t last forever and in the coming years, her age begin to show, but in the eyes of dairymen from the registered purist to the commercial realist, Ole Lu will continue to be known for her balance, style and undeniable quality. The moment Judge McKinven made her his Grand Champion, all was right in the world in Greenwich, New York. And in the present culture, we needed that. I have no idea where Lu will be in the coming weeks, but on August 9th, she as the queen of the day and will continue to hold her place in the court of New York’s finest bred and owned. Complete results from the state show can be found beginning on page 16, along with the county shows from around the state. And don’t miss out on Looking Back with Barrie on page 8! Looking Back With Barrie DREAMSTREET CLASSIFICATION AND THE COLOMBIA EXPORT DEAL Barrie Potter of Syracuse enjoys reminiscing about his early years in the Registered Holstein business, influential cows, and those charismatic icons who kept the business colorful.
It was classification time at Dreamstreet, and at a normal operation this would be one stop at one farm. But Dreamstreet was different. There were roughly 1,000 head to get ready at 24 different farms, which required a team of fitters and one boss named Buddy. Buddy Flemming had hired the usual suspects: Potter, Cooner, Scott Turner, Jerry Young, Mark Crandall and Martha Seifert. “We would start clipping a good two weeks before classification and get one herd done in a day. I was the greenest one of the bunch,” Barrie remarked. “Of course, the Coach Lamp Inn was our home away from home.” Buddy liked to keep tabs on the clipping crew and would call the herd manager at each farm and see if the crew had arrived yet. When Cooner got wind of this, they started getting to the farm at 5 a.m. “Buddy would call the farm manager and ask, ‘Those guys show up yet?’ And when the farm manager said ‘Yes, they got here at 5 a.m.,’ Buddy was always surprised.” It took two classifiers to knock out the farms. They would score two herds in the morning and two in the afternoon. “We would wash four herds the day before, so when they scored they would look their best,” Barrie said. The last farm to score was always the Bond farm because that had the best set of cows. “After classification, Maggie Murphy would show up and we would spend a couple of days picturing all the new excellent cows. We would go to two or three spots to picture and bring the nearby cows to that spot.” Buddy liked this crew and wanted to keep them around for the summer, so he would hire them to do vacation milking for the employees who wanted some time off. “One of the guys came up to Cooner and said, ‘So, you guys are the vacation milkers?’ And Cooner gave him one of his business cards that said clipping and hoof trimming on it. Then he asked the guy: ‘Does that card say anything about vacation milking?’”

TEAM C & P Details were not the forte of Team Cooner and Potter. When it came to moving cows from one farm to another or retrieving heifers from the heifer growers and placing them at the right farm, the books didn’t always balance. Barrie explained, “Dennis Lucas from Montana usually took care of moving cattle from one farm to another, but he went on vacation and Cooner and I had to do it. We had a list of cattle that we moved and then we turned the sheets into the office. “When Dennis got back from vacation, he said he had cattle he was still trying to locate because the sheets were filled out incorrectly.”
CATTLE TO COLOMBIA Dreamstreet, Ruann and Pinehurst all had cattle that were being exported to Colombia. Buddy called Barrie at 8 o’clock one night and said he had to go to the Newburgh airport (now New York Stewart International Airport) to take care of the export cattle. “I had just finished a long day working on the farms and didn’t have the chance to change clothes, so with the truck loaded with a milker pump and

some supplies that we needed to take care of 40 head of cattle, I got in and drove to Newburgh,” Barrie recalled. They arrived at midnight, took care of the cattle and got a room at a nearby motel. Returning to their motel the next day, they found someone else in their room. Buddy was fuming when he approached the front desk clerk and spotted his suitcase behind the counter. “The desk clerk called around and found a motel with a vacancy and, on the way out to the truck, Buddy threw the room key in the trash can and said, ‘It’ll be a cold day in Hell when I return that room key to them,’” Barrie said. Duncan Bellinger was in charge of the Colombia export deal. “Peter Coyne was working for Ruann at the time and he came with those cattle, and when the Dreamstreet cattle arrived, Cooner came too and brought some clean clothes for me. “We treated these cattle like they were our show string. We rinsed them down twice a day because it was really hot. By the time they boarded the plane for Colombia, they were in show shape and looked great.” After a few days off and a trip back home, Barrie went back to Dreamstreet and made ready to move into the Delaware County show and then on to the New York State Fair. At the Delaware County show, two herds took up one tent. Stalled head-to-head, Dreamstreet was on one side and Tyrbach Farm was on the other. George Morgan, the original owner of Dreamstreet, now owned Tyrbach and, according to Barrie, “It was an all-out war between the two farms. There was a lot of expensive cows and a whole lot of smack talk.” According to the show report submitted by Mrs. Herb Hait: Judge John Sullivan, LeRoy, NY, found that the competition was strong as 234 head of quality registered Holsteins paraded before him. Dreamstreet Holsteins, Walton, showed the Grand & Reserve Grand entries. Grayview Croquet Convincer, a wellbalanced individual with a beautiful udder, became the overall Champion of the day, with Cedar Crag Elevation Sungold named in the Reserve slot. The Shelton Merrett Memorial production trophy also went to Dreamstreet Holsteins to a cow named Schruppdale Astro Hoppie. Premier Breeder for the year was Dairysmith Farm, Franklin, the Donald Smith Family. Tyrbach Farm, Walton, NY, the George Morgan Holstein herd, received the Premier Exhibitor laurels. Best Udder of the show also went to Tyrbach Holsteins. Bedford Farms, Jefferson, exhibited the best animal bred by senior exhibitor with Relay Elevation Mermaid Mary. Incidentally, Cedar Crag Elevation Sungold was the winner of the dry 3- & 4-year-old class. She

freshened again and she would try to anchor the New York State Fair string.
A DISCOVERY ON THE WAY TO MARTHA’S VINEYARD Another excursion with cattle took Barrie to a place he had never been, and has never been again since - Martha’s Vineyard. Seaside Dairy on Martha’s Vineyard had purchased about 60 head in the Dreamstreet Summer Dream Sale. They wanted to process their own milk and sell ice cream. So, at midnight, Buddy and his gang loaded up two straight trucks and a gooseneck and drove to Woodshole on Cape Cod to get on the passenger ferry. “But just before we loaded the trucks, Buddy asked if anyone wanted to have a beer. So, we did. One of the truckers was a young guy and was instructed by his boss, ‘Whatever you do, don’t tick Buddy off.’” When Buddy offered him a beer, he took it. Then when Buddy asked if he wanted a second beer, he said yes. “Buddy looked at him and said, ‘Oh no you won’t; this is serious business and these are expensive cattle.’” Barrie added, “They guy admitted later that he didn’t want the first beer, but he knew he wasn’t supposed to tick Buddy off, so he took it.” This trip to Martha’s Vineyard was also when he found out a little-known fact about Buddy: “He was awful nervous about getting on that boat and so that’s when I found out Buddy couldn’t swim.” They got the cattle settled in at Seaside Dairy and didn’t waste any time getting back to Walton. Barrie noted they had taken a cooler with them to Martha’s Vineyard and purchased some fresh lobster. “When we got back to the Coach Lamp, the cook fixed them for us - and we enjoyed a great dinner.” Next time: The New York State Fair and Madison

Executive Manager’s
Report
And just like that another summer has come and gone. It seems like I blinked and August was gone. Despite it going so quickly it certainly
was a busy month. We started the month by moving the office from our previous space in Ithaca. We are officially moved into our new space in Freeville and are slowly getting things together. A huge thank you to Stacie Sherman for all of the time and effort spent packing and unpacking thingsthis move would not have been possible without her! Just a note for all- we are using a PO Box instead of having mail delivered directly to the new office. The physical address of the new space is 2085 Dryden Road in Freeville, but mail should be sent to PO Box 10, Dryden NY 13053. Directly after our move I headed to the Washington County Fairgrounds in Greenwich NY to kick off the 2021 New York Holstein State Show. For the second year in a row the quality of cattle exhibited was tremendous. Callum McKinven placed 297 cattle over the two-day show. Thank you to everyone who supported the show, whether it be by attending one of the show days or by exhibiting cattle. I truly enjoy being part of putting on a show that allows for family, friends, and fellow farmers to come together over a few days, making memories that will last forever. We were able to give out $7,500 in champion checks and almost $4,000 in cash prizes thanks to our generous sponsors. Thank you to the staff from the Washington County Fairgrounds and to all of those that volunteered their time to make the show possible. A special thank you to Jason Lloyd, Deb, Maci and Camryn Crothers, Barb Hanselman, Jason Pullis, Beth Keene, Ruth McCuin, Kate Gulley, Rick Welsh, Stacie Sherman and our National Holstein rep, Kennedy Crothers. Congratulations to all of those that were able to host a county show this summer and to those that exhibited. I was fortunate enough to get to several shows this summer and will be making it a goal to get to more next summer. Just a reminder, if you haven’t sent in your official placings from your show, please do. You can mail them to the office or email them to me. All-NY and the R&W All-NY forms are posted in this issue. The deadline for both is November 15, 2021. Winners will be announced at the 2022 convention. Speaking of convention, junior advisors and juniors, please start thinking about convention contests. It is 10 - NYN September 2021
How is it September already? Summer shows are over and school is here. Where did our summer go? I hope everyone had an amazing summer, including good times spent with friends and family, full of fun and laughter. To wrap up this summer, come join the New York Holstein Association Caitlyn VanDeusen at Ridgedale Farm in Sharon Springs on September 11th for the Summer Picnic. It will be a great time for everyone to come together. Along with the end of summer, an important thing to think about is convention. I know that convention seems a long way off, but it is just a few months away. Make sure to get a head start and don’t wait till the last minute to prepare for contests like dairy bowl or speeches, and make sure to get those DJM books started! Good luck to everyone as the school year and fall sports start. Hope to see you all at the Summer Picnic!

never too early to start practicing. DJM books will be due before you know it so start thinking about those as well! I hope to see you all at the “end of summer” picnic at Ridgedale- the Conard family has a great day planned for all and we will be doing the raffle calf drawing there. I hope you all have a bountiful Fall crop season and good luck to those showing at any of the Fall shows- I hope to see some of you there!
From The NYHA President By Jason Pullis
September, already. The summer has come and gone, and our county fairs and shows are about over. We always say, “Where does the time go?” but the fact is, there are still 168 hours in a week, just as there have always been. Time refuses to stand still - and the summer of 2021 was no exception. Here at New York Holstein, we have had a busy summer too. Chelsea has been up the road and down the road attending numerous county shows throughout New York. In early August she and Stacy moved our home office from the old digs on Hanshaw Road in Ithaca to a new, smaller space right on Route 13 just outside Dryden. You might ask why we would go through the hassle of moving fewer than 10 miles? With less staff using the space, we came to the conclusion that we needed less of it. With a smaller space comes a smaller rental cost, thus benefitting our bottom line. I haven’t been to our new office yet, but the pictures I have seen show a bright, open space with lots of natural sunlight and a feel that looks “homey.” Just a few days after orchestrating the office move, it was time for the second annual New York Summer Holstein Show in Greenwich. Probably the best word I can come up with to describe the show is “WOW.” If you were in the barns, at ringside or watching on the internet at home, you were probably amazed by the quality of cattle that New Yorkers brought out to the ring, class after class. As I was checking animals into the ring throughout the show, all I could wonder was how on Earth Judge Callum McKinven could sort them out. There was good after good, from the top to the bottom. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors for bringing their best to the show and for getting them to the ring in fine form! Fall shows including the Big E, Eastern National in Harrisburg and World Dairy Expo are right around the corner. If the show in Greenwich was any indication of how things will go this fall, New York exhibitors should be in fine form for the shows ahead. Best of luck to all exhibitors going forward. Shortly after the completion of the heifer show in Greenwich, I was walking around visiting with exhibitors when I received a text from good friend Deb Quackenbush. It occurred to me that she hadn’t been at the show that day, even though she had planned on attending. The text simply said: “We lost Pete today.” The Pete she was referring to was Peter DeBlock, a cousin of hers and another good friend of mine. At 78 years of age, his health wasn’t in tip-top shape, so his passing didn’t totally surprise me; however, there is a difference between not being surprised and still being
saddened by the loss of a friend. Pete was an ardent Holstein enthusiast and supporter. He lived in Fonda but was a lifelong member of the USO Holstein Club. He was a member of the Cornell Dairy Judging team while in college, spent a number of years serving his country in the U.S. Army and was a longtime member of the sales management team at the Backus organization. I first met Pete while in high school and, when I became Editor of the News in 2003, he became a regular caller and we visited almost weekly. He assisted me in writing tribute stories in the magazine for Dr. George Trimberger and Charles Backus after their deaths. Over time I began to look forward to those calls (usually on Mondays). Some weeks we would talk longer than others. Some days there was a deadline approaching or I was on the road, but that just made for more conversation the next time. He knew a lot of people and had a lot of time on his hands, so he was usually full of good stories about Holstein doings from today and yesteryear. As I changed jobs and eventually returned home to the farm, the conversations continued, sometimes not nearly as often as we would have liked. Pete loved the Holstein breed and always enjoyed dreaming about having an endless supply of funds and putting together the next great herd. The enthusiasm was always there - and that was something that I always admired about him. Life and its circumstances hadn’t always been kind to Pete, but he always made the best of it and never complained. Right up to our last conversation sometime in July, he was always looking forward to that next great opportunity to be in the Registered Holstein business. Many times during our conversations, he would insist he wanted me to speak at his funeral. He always said if I didn’t have anything to say, just get up and tell the audience when the next advertising deadline for the News was and call it good. I did attend his funeral with the intention of honoring his wishes, but the service was quite brief and the pastor never asked if anyone else wanted to share anything. One thing that the pastor did talk about was the fact that Pete would undoubtedly be free from his health burdens and be looking for all of the great cows as soon as he got to Heaven. Enjoy the show, my old friend - for you have earned your place at the ringside. And for those of you wondering, the advertising deadline for the October issue of the News will be September 10. Call Melissa today, and tell her that Jason and Pete sent you. NYN September 2021 - 11
