From the Editor With my first New York Holstein Convention under my belt, I can say confidently that New York breeders are an amazing group of folks who have an iron will and an insatiable passion for the Black and White cow. With a history teeming with influential cow families that crafted the modern example of the profitable Holstein cow, New York continues to stamp their brand on Registered Holsteins MELISSA HART from coast to coast. From corporate partnerships and diversified operations, to traditional farms, New York has proven to be a place where different breeding philosophies and ingenuity coalesce behind breeders who refuse to give up. As I listened to the awards that were presented at the convention on January 31st, I was struck by the loyalty and respect among the breeders. People were not only honored for their accomplishments but also for their tenacity for their livelihood. As I headed back west from Syracuse, I left with a confidence in a group of folks who love cows and respect each other. Thank you for welcoming me and my husband and making us feel at home. Now it’s time to jump into spring and while you enjoy this combined issue of February and March in celebration of the All-New York Red and White contest and award winners, we are planning on a blockbuster April issue! Not only will it be in the mail at the beginning of April, it will be handed out at the Spring Carousel. The ad deadline is March 16th! I hope you enjoy the awards, photos and our Red and White feature in this issue! And if you have any comments, questions or critiques, contact me! Let’s Talk!

Happy New Year and New Decade! Our Club Banquet and Annual Meeting were held Jan. 4th at Joe and Darleen Meehan’s home. There were 36 attending this important meeting. Thank you to Joe and Darleen for hosting. Beef was excellent, and there were many dishes to share. Kate Helgerson served her Mom’s special potatoes. Jason did an excellent job running the meeting with the distraction of the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs going into overtime. Sadly they lost! Long-Term Member Awards were presented. Don Coleman at 55 years, and Steph and Chris George with 35. Marv Covert reached 50 yrs. and was present to accept and share a few words on his farm operation. Reports were given. Tom Harkenrider updated us on State Activities. We are all experiencing the effects of declining membership and the decreased value of our cows. Sales were discussed and at present cannot be counted on for revenue. Many options for other income sources were discussed. The bylaws were amended to have the Board meet less frequently. Election of officers took place. Jason Gerber remains President. Bethany King continues as Vice President. Laverne Warner is Treasurer. Tom Harkenrider is again serving as State Director. Brett Williamson was reelected Director, and Amanda Lewis will replace Todd Galton. Joe Meehan, Rachel Smith and Dan Hoppough remain. Darleen will continue as secretary along with Jess Houghtaling as Jr. Advisor. Congratulations to Jason and Betsy Gerber on the birth of twin boys born at the end of November. A big thank you to Kate Helgerson and Al for transporting the Jack Lamphiers to the meeting. It was good to see Jerry Smith there too. It is with mixed feelings that I write my final “News.” It is time to pass the lead strap to Betsy Gerber who is a more active member. After Mike’s retiring, I find I must follow. He was so kind and supportive to me during the years as was Jason Pullis. There are no friends like the Holstein Friends. I took this job on about 15 years ago when Andy Merry was President. At that time it seemed we were not getting anything printed. I like to think I have done it for Agnes Kane as she believed it was a privilege and should be utilized. I guess I did it for me too as I enjoyed writing, which may be unusual for a nurse. Anyways it has been my pleasure, and I hope to see you at the shows. HAPPY HEARTS and start drinking whole milk again. We have! 8 - NYN February-March 2020

The O-H-M Holstein Club held their annual meeting at the American Legion Hall, Richfield Springs on Saturday evening, December 7, 2019. Club President Susan Menendez welcomed over 60 members and guests present including the long-term members that were honored. State Club director, Deb Quackenbush presented each long term member with their certificates including Larry Ainslie, Ainsbrook Farm, 60 years; Wayne Conard, Ridgedale Farm & Susan Mower, Maypar Farm both 50 years; and Tom VanAlstine, Van Acres for 40 years. Paul VanDenburgh, the club’s treasurer gave a detailed financial report. He also summarized the 50/50 raffle which the club did in 2019 instead of their annual sale to raise funds to sponsor their annual show. Further discussion and a decision on the future of a sale in 2020 will take place during the sale committee meeting in the early spring. Show chairman, Doug Wolfe reported on the 2019 show held at the Fonda Fairgrounds in mid-July. Doug has secured the Fonda Fairgrounds for Thursday & Friday, July 23rd & 24th for the 2020 show. The show will be on Friday July 24th starting with Junior Showmanship classes. Further details to be decided at the show committee meeting in March. Jessica Hula/Fredericks, Junior advisor, reported on all of the past year’s junior activities and accomplishments. This past fall the group took an overnight camping trip to the Tri-County area. Junior members were currently working on getting ready for the NYS Jr. Convention with regular dairy bowl practice sessions; working on filling out DJM forms and completing their club’s scrapbook and folding display. The Junior Club will once again be organizing the club’s Spring Banquet set for Saturday evening, April 4th at Francesca’s Banquet Hall, Ilion. The following were elected as officers and chairpersons for 2020: Susan Menendez, President; Ben Byma, Vice President; Ginny Wolfe, News Reporter; Jessica Hula/Fredericks, Jr. Advisor; Dan Menendez & Brad Ainslie, Sale Chairmen; Doug Wolfe, Show Chairman. Also serving on the board of directors are Brad Osborne, Brad Ainslie, Cyrus Conard, Judy Littrell, Stacy Collins, and Chris Hoefele. Plans have been made for a Spring Barn Meeting at Sky-Mac Farm home of Roger and Tammy Smith and family of East Springfield on the afternoon of March 21st from 1-3 o’clock. The Smith’s relocated back to the Otsego County area from their farm in Delaware County two years ago. They now farm on the East Lake Road just a few miles south of US Route 20 in East

Springfield. Congratulations are in order for the three junior members from our club, Cassie Menendez, Laura Littrell & Bryce Windecker that are members of the 2019 Cobleskill College Dairy Cattle Judging Team that won every 2-year college judging contest this past fall. They will be traveling to compete in the International Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in Europe. We wish them the best. Congratulations also to Cassie Menendez for being named NY State DJM for 2020.

Obituary  H. ELIZABETH HART January 18, 2020

H. Elizabeth Hart, 88, of Ingalls Corners Road, Perryville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 18, while surrounded by her loving family. Elizabeth was born on August 16, 1931 in Munnsville, the daughter of Daniel and Genevieve Beeman. She was a graduate of Chittenango Central School, and then dedicated her life to raising a family with her husband Gene on the hill at MikRob Farm. Her family was her pride and joy. She took particular pleasure in her grand-, great-grand-, and great-great- grandchildren. She loved tending her flower gardens, bird watching, and baking her famous apple pie and banana bread, but most important to Liz was her love for Jesus. Her living faith had a profound impact on countless people, starting with her family and extending to friends, neighbors, and even strangers. She was a woman known by her love, hugs and prayers. If you were hugged by Nani, you knew it. Surviving are her daughters Susan Jamieson, Shelli Daignault, and son Robb (Sabra) Hart; 7 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Eugene; son Michael; son-in-law David Jamieson; sisters Gloria, Beverly, Jackie, Judy, and Patty; brother Daniel; and birth mother Edith Peo. A Memorial Service will be held 10:00 am Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the Crossroads Community Church, 1751 Fyler Rd. North Chittenango, Rev. Mick Keville officiating. Calling hours will be 4-7 pm Friday, January 24, 2020 at the G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, 702 Legion Drive, Chittenango. Executive Manager’s

Report

Conventions, Carousel preparations, calls, and cows have been consuming my time these past few weeks. We had a wonKELLY REYNOLDS derful 2 conventions and you can see full reports on those throughout the magazine. A huge hit at our Junior convention besides the heated competitions was the silent auction. Youth could receive tickets for competing in contests, lending a helping hand, playing games at activity night and more. They then used these tickets to “buy” donated items that ranged from a pair of clippers to mini flashlights. Thank you to everyone who supports Junior convention, from sponsors, to volunteers, parents, and junior advisors. If you ever need a reminder of your “WHY” please stop into Junior convention next year. To see a hotel full of juniors excited about the dairy community and the future of the Holstein industry is a great way to refresh and recharge.

As we head into the end of February and March Carousel preparations are well underway. You can find the full Schedule on Page 5 of the News along with a little information about the judges for the shows. We are excited for another world class event with some of the best cattle in North America. Entry information is online at www.nyspringdairycarousel.fairentry.com. You can find a link to this website and more Carousel information on www.nyholsteinevents.com. The first week of February I had the opportunity to complete Holstein Foundation’s Young Dairy Leaders Institute training. I would highly recommend this 3 phase program for any young adult involved in the dairy community. From sharing our dairy story, to media training, agricultural policy, and leadership this program covers a wide spectrum of opportunities and challenges we face as a dairy industry. It is a humbling experience to be surrounded by peers that are involved in different aspects of the industry, from Animal Science professors, to directors of research at prominent AI companies, to milk inspectors, journalists and more! You can learn so much from not only the speakers but the other attendees as well. The final speaker at YDLI was a motivational speaker, Ty Bennett. The premise of his speech was investing in people and in turn people investing in you. This made me think about New York Holstein. How are we investing in our members? If I’m being honest I don’t think we’re doing a great job of it at the moment. But I also think we need to know what our members want. We can’t move forward as a business or an association if we don’t know what the members want from their membership and from their organization. Junior programs are important, sales are important, county shows are important, the New York News is important, Spring Dairy Carousel is important. But what are we missing? How can we do better? We will not change and grow if we don’t know what you want, so I urge you to call me or call an executive committee member and let them know what you want. Behind the scenes grumbling won’t get anything accomplished. I am looking forward to a great spring and New York Spring Dairy Carousel, make plans to join us in Syracuse! Best, Kelly

From The NYHA President Jason Pullis

Hello New York Holstein friends. On February 1st, I became the newest member to serve as your President and I am excited to help lead our organization through its 100th year. I am looking forward to facing the challenges ahead and connecting with our members at shows, sales and industry events, as well as on their farm or mine. For those of you that don’t know me, I am a 37 year member of New York Holstein and am a partner at Roedale Farm in Richfield Springs. My wife Holly and I have two sons, Maxwell (12) and Owen (11) and together we also operate Hollywood Enterprises, a small company dedicated to raising and marketing fresh Thanksgiving turkeys. I like black coffee, chocolate chip cookies and can often be found sitting up to all hours of the night finishing the latest John Grisham novel. I am not a big fan of vegetables, driving in heavy traffic and people who always use the word “ME” in a sentence instead of “I”. While at the Convention in Syracuse, many of our members heard the announcement that our Executive Manager, Kelly Reynolds, will be leaving the organization later this spring. Since coming on board in the fall of 2016, Kelly has worked hard with members to keep New York Holstein exciting and relevant. The Executive Committee has been working closely with our Strategic Planning Committee to formulate ideas and a plan of what we want our next Executive Manager’s position to look like. We expect to have a job description completed by early March and will proceed from there. Just like the seasons in the yearly calendar, change is constantly among us and New York Holstein is no different. It is no secret that we have struggled financially in recent times and we are currently faced with a budget deficit for this year’s operations. We are extremely fortunate to have been blessed with a healthy reserve fund but your Executive Committee is not content to sit back and let that fix our problems. As a TEAM, we need to push to find new members and bring delinquent members back to the association. As a TEAM, we need to all support this magazine and its Editor so that it can continue to not only spread the word about the quality of Registered Holsteins in New York, but also contribute to the bottom line in a positive manner. As a TEAM, we all need to support New York Holstein sponsored sales. Every sale needs consignors, bidders and buyers. If you can’t be one, can you be one of the others? And lastly, as a TEAM, we all need to support our youth on the local and state level. They are the future! Is our financial situation something to be concerned about? It is. Do I think that balancing the budget and returning to a positive cash flow is possible in the not too distant future? I do. We will do it. As a TEAM. I welcome your input by phone, email or text at any tine. As a rule, I don’t carry my phone while milking, but it is generally with me all other times. If you don’t get me, leave a message and I will return your call. Thanks for reading. Cell: 315-794-6737 Email: jasonpullis@gmail.com

2020 Active Master Breeder Presented by Patsy Gifford

This year’s recipients of our New York Holstein Association Active Master Breeder award is brothers John & David Marshman of Marshman Farms, home of Tiger Lily Holsteins. A little history: I’ve known the Marshman family for more than 50 years. For many years, the long tie stall barn right beside the road full of big special Registered Holsteins with their tails all tied up to stay clean was a Chenango County landmark and often a gathering place for Holstein breeders. The first New York Holstein Convention I ever attended was in 1983 when their father Bob was elected President. John and David grew up and decided to stay in Oxford and make the farm their livelihood with father Bob and Uncle Dan. Looking toward a future that would ultimately include two more households and other deciding factors, the brothers bought the farm in 1991 and the herd moved into a new freestall. The herd has been on the move ever since. They built the new free stall but have always utilized existing facilities. Each year, they seem to add a new building or other improvement, but in their time, at their pace, and within their budget. I would bet a lot that they have never made a management decision based on keeping up with the neighbors or anybody else. Today, I dare say everyone in this room knows John Marshman pretty well. He’s been a corner stone of New York Holstein for many years and his low key, levelheaded guidance as Finance Chair for more than ten years have benefitted us again and again. I can’t remember John ever missing a meeting in all his years of involvement. He serves on various dairy related committees and currently sits on the Holstein USA Board of Directors. I think it’s also safe to say that not everyone in this room knows David. He is the stay-close-to-home partner that can most all the time be found somewhere on the farm or in the shop. John and David’s different personalities complement each other, and their successful partnership is built on respect for each other’s talents and strengths. Their individual responsibilities and strengths have grown through the years as the herd grew in size and diversity. But, as on any family farm, the lines often blur, and each is ready and willing to help the other. Decisions and farm management are a joint venture one hundred percent, all the time. Marshman Farms milks 450 cows that are all Holstein USA identified averaging 28,000 and farm 1000 acres. There’s another 400-500 head of young stock. While they do not classify the entire herd at one time, so they don’t have a BAA, they do score regularly, and the herd is home to many very good and excellent cows. A walk 14 - NYN February-March 2020

through the herd shows years of careful breeding with its correct type and will to milk. So many family farms have disappeared in the time frame of John and David’s ownership of Marshman Farms. John & David benefitted from the excellent management of the five generations before them, learned from their own achievements and mistakes, as well as what they saw on other farms, listened, were consistent and attentive to every detail, while never taking their eyes off the bottom line or the budget. They constantly and conservatively looked to the future to weigh what would spell success today and in the future. This makes Marshman Farms a family farm that’s still going strong and getting stronger. When John and Sheila introduced me to their daughter Lily when she was just a few weeks old, I admired her bright red hair. John remarked that maybe it was time to get some Red and Whites. And so began the Tiger Lily Red and White story. At the ET Sale in Rochester, Marshmans bought the September Storm pick of flush consigned by Kings Ransom. The resulting calves were tested for red and the red carrier moved to Oxford. The “L” family that was developed from that pick has become internationally well-known and lucrative. Holstein International has showcased the cow family and recognized their impact on the breed. While maintaining correct type, breeding for red, high genomics, and polled were a focus. Tiger Lily Ladd P was an early red genomic polled bull who sired elite individuals worldwide. Female members of the family, including Ladd P’s litter mate Lana, have become prolific brood cows, bull mothers, and show winners. Another “L” family, the Planet Limbos, has recently produced 18 offspring with GTPI over 2800 with one female also scoring 163 gRZG making her heavily contracted to Germany. About 10 years ago, fairly early in the genomic era, John had a flush from Lulu, another Ladd P littermate, that would work well for the Harvest Sale. We needed headliners. He told me that if one tested over 2000 GTPI and was polled we could have her. I remember the phone call when John said, “we got her Patsy.” He didn’t back pedal and suggest she would better fit a more elite

sale. Always good for his word, she came to Cornell. Not only was the calf solid red, polled, and very high red and white genomics, she was pretty as a picture and a showoff with her ears always up looking around. The price we had in mind was healthy, but not extravagant. I was taking bids but kept half an eye on John sitting up in the bleachers in right field. We sailed by our hopedfor price and with each bid, John’s smile just got bigger and bigger. We stopped so Horace and Rama could each give a speech, Ken Riehl was on the phone encouraging partners, and the gavel fell at $30,000. An all-time high for the Harvest Sale at the time. That’s one example of Tiger Lily cattle in New York Holstein sales. Every single NYHA sale offered Tiger Lily cattle. Some sold better than others, but Marshmans have never failed to support our sales as both sellers and buyers. They support local, state, and national sales regularly with blacks and reds. They are longtime supporters of the Delaware County Sale with multiple animals. I once asked John if he was disappointed in the prices of ones who didn’t bring top dollar. His reply was that they purposely send a variety of animals so there is a choice for a variety of buyers. Not everyone can afford or wants a full pedigreed calf that’s a high-end show ring contender. Marshmans recognize this and offer to the total market, not just aiming for the high end. Animals are always available privately and the success stories are many, whether they purchased a show calf, bred heifer, young milk cows, or even a young bull who didn’t quite make it to a bull stud. Marshmans have shown for many, many years. They know what that “other” end of the line feels like, but always supported their shows and often were the work horses behind the scenes making sure manure was hauled away and all those details that many exhibitors take for granted were taken care of. In the last few years, with the purchase of the Sweetie cow, with partner Ron Hembury, and careful breeding, Marshman Farms has become very familiar with blue and purple ribbons and breeder and exhibitor banners. They are now a fixture at state and national shows along with their local shows. Nieces and nephews, along with Lily, have learned the challenges, satisfaction of a job well done, lessons learned, and the friendships made in the show ring. Learning from the Marshman family, their sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic, stick-toit-ness when an animal refuses to cooperate, set a great example for fellow exhibitors young and old. This year, after a great show season, Lily has two Junior All American Red and White nominations with her Jr. 2 and fall yearling. Both are also Bred & Owned. Another member of her up and coming “Ridley Family” is owned with Alan and Jo Merrill and is Nominated All American Red & White Winter Yearling. I asked Dave Rama if he had any input on this presentation. He has worked closely with John for many years and this is his reply. “Every time I think about John Marshman, I think of honesty, integrity, humility, perseverance, determination. He has always stayed the

course no matter what. He is one of NYHA’s most active members and sale participants. And a great family man with a heart of gold. Exemplary in every way.” Rama only knows John. All the same can be said for David. John and David Marshman, day in and day out, are both a true example of all the things Rama said. They are leaders in their community, as well as the Registered Holstein community and dairy industry. They own and efficiently manage a high producing herd made even better by high quality crops and care. A tribute to their labor management skill is that the young herdsman, Earl Meade, who joined Bob and Dan 45 years ago in the tie stall barn, is still working part time for John and David today. Master Breeder is much more than just good cows. John and David Marshman, together, have a partnership that encompasses all the great qualities that are necessary to achieve the success in so many areas of our industry that we all respect and admire. Please join me as we congratulate and honor them as this year’s New York Holstein Association Active Master Breeder.

2020 Retired Master Breeder Presented by Brad Cates It is both an honor and a pleasure to present this year’s Retired Master Breeder Award to Tom Murray. I’ve always felt the best way to define a master breeder is by the life he and his cattle have provided for his family. Tom and Nancy have three children who have all actively worked and supported the family farm. All three are graduates of Cornell. Dan is in the agricultural banking business, Blane is a partner on the farm, and Kendra is in the financial business in Manhattan. Before I go any further, and I think Tom would agree, without his wife, Nancy, his list of accomplishments would be significantly less. I think it’s a well-known fact, they were made for each other. For those of you who don’t know Tom, he is well known for being a hard worker, a businessman, a risk taker, and an excellent breeder of dairy cattle. Tom always demands perfection in everything he does and holds others to the same standards. He has always been fearless in the pursuit of his dreams and has a strong passion for his work. It all started in 1991, Tom and Nancy borrowed money and bought a farm in Waterloo, NY. At that point in time, Tom purchased a select group of animals from proven cow families from breeders who he admired. The highlight of his purchases was a young Cleitus daughter that was in a sale that, against the advice of his banker, and more importantly, Nancy, Tom spent $30,000 of the NYN February-March 2020 - 15

From left: Nancy, Tom and Blane Murray of Muranda Holsteins

money ear-marked for animals to fill the barn, on one cow. With the majority of the money spent, Tom filled the remainder of the barn with grades, and a group of registered heifers that he bought from Co-Vale. That was the beginning of Muranda Holsteins. When I delivered our heifers, I couldn’t help but notice the area was heavy clay, crops looked tough, and the buildings needed major repairs. I thought to myself, they were in for a long road ahead. Within a short time, with a tremendous amount of hard work by Tom and Nancy, the barn was renovated, flowerpots were filled and there was a well-earned Dairy of Distinction sign on the front yard. They turned their home and farm into a show place, and no matter what day of the week you went there, it was immaculate. During that period of time, the herd was developing at a rapid rate, the grade cows were used as recipients, and within a few years, Muranda Oscar Lucinda, a daughter of that $30,000 cow that everybody advised Tom not to buy, produced a world record of 67,914 pounds of milk in one year, on twice a day milking, a record that stood for 13 years and has only been beaten once since then. Who would ever have thought a world record milk cow would be bred and developed here in such a short time? From 1993 to 2008 Tom had animals that topped many New York and national sales. For all of us who know Tom, the best compliment he ever received, was a second-time buyer. In 2003, the Murrays had the Mark of Muranda milking herd dispersal. It was the highest herd sale in the nation that year. Tom was ahead of his time. He appreciated a cow with smaller stature than what the breed was looking for at that point in time, with the strength and will to milk, and that was trouble free. I thought Tom might incorporate more size into the herd, when daughter Kendra became interested in showing, but I have to tell you, Tom found a way to breed that numbers calf with the style to bring that little girl a blue ribbon from local to state levels. Staying true to Tom’s breeding philosophy, he sold many embryos and cattle in the US and international markets, bred bulls that were in the top five for milk in the 16 - NYN February-March 2020

United States, with over thirty of them going into studs, was a PBR winner for eleven years, has bred over ninety excellent cows, all the way up to 95 points. The herd stats were always at the top for Seneca County year after year. Upon completion of college, Blane returned home to take over the management of the dairy. Carrying on the family tradition, last year under the Murray breeding program, Blane bred a calf that was first place spring calf at a national show. The apple didn’t fall too far from the tree! With full confidence in Blane, Tom was free to expand his new endeavor, Muranda Cheese. Today Muranda Cheese produces over seventeen types of cheeses that have been recognized for their superior quality. Just a little update on the cheese business, during the summer and fall months the farm hosts between 200 – 300 people daily, and on the weekends when they have live entertainment and food, it’s closer to 500 – 600 people per day. I can’t think of anyone who would be better ambassadors for our great product! They also book special events throughout the spring, summer and fall. That farm that once was in need of much repair, is now featured on the Finger Lakes Wine Trail map, and if you haven’t been there, I would highly recommend the experience! If Dick Brooks of Paclamar Farms, one of the greatest breeding establishments in the world, where Tom worked after school, were here today, he would be very proud of Tom. The industry is lucky to have Tom and the influence he has had on genetics world-wide, because in a world where anybody can be anything, he could have followed a different path, and been just as successful. Congratulations to Tom and Nancy Murray.

2020 Outstanding Young Breeder

The 2020 Outstanding Young Breeder award went to Andy, Mackenzie and Tyler Reynolds of Reyncrest. A full feature on this sibling team will be in the April issue.

2020 Friend of New York Holstein Association Presented by Janice Barret Thirty years ago, after several bountiful years of merchandising income, the NYHA board of directors decided to establish a scholarship fund in order to begin the tradition of offering deserving, agri-career focused junior members help with college costs. NYHA reserves provided some seed money to get started, but the goal was to build an interest-bearing investment fund to perpetually fund the program. Generosity built the fund: • Breeders donated sale consignments, embryos and proceeds from cattle sales • Memorials were gifted to the fund • AI companies donated semen to be auctioned, Trans Ova donated IVF services • Check off donations continue to come in with memberships each year • Quilts, antiques, red wagons, toys and furniture have been auctioned • A silent auction was held at Convention for many years • In 2019, a basket raffle fundraiser was launched at Spring Carousel Annual accrued interest and fundraising have allowed multiple scholarships to be awarded each year. Over the years, 150 scholarships have been awarded, now totaling over $150,000. What a great success story! And there is probably not a person in this room who has not contributed to the fund in some way, shape or form – so give yourselves a round of applause for the part you’ve played in this successful program! However, as special as all of you are, tonight we are honoring one very special person who has worked tirelessly on this program almost from the start. Nancy Wright has been involved with building and strengthening every part of this program, from helping perfect the application and judging process, to serving on the selection committee, to keeping complete and accurate notes and records, to fundraising. It was Nancy and Betty Emerling who first suggested the Scholarship Silent Auction, launched it, and executed it for every one of the many years it was held at state convention. Nancy solicited and collected donated items, she and Betty organized the display and bid sheets, clerked it, collected money, sent thank you notes and coordinated delivery of items. It was a tremendous undertaking! Jackie Bennett, who is the current chair of the scholarship committee and incidentally, one of the

Janice Barret and Nancy Wright

early recipients of a scholarship, says for as long as she has been involved, if there was ever anything going on with the scholarship program, Nancy Wright was there doing it. Nancy retired from the scholarship committee last year, after many, many years of service. Nobody knows exactly how many years she served, but it is safe to say she was perhaps the longest serving member and, without a doubt and hardest working. Nancy: you have made such a difference – not only in the success of the NY Junior Holstein Scholarship Program, but in the lives of all the young people who have benefitted from it. Please join me in recognizing Nancy Wright as a Friend of New York Holstein Association.

Thank You! I would like to thank everyone involved with making me a Friend of New York Holstein at the convention banquet. I am very humbled by this award and feel that I should share this with my dear friend, Betty Emerling. We worked together for years to grow the Scholarship Fund. At the banquet, I thanked the many people who supported our fund raising over those years. But, I neglected to mention my biggest supporter, Dick. He loaded and unloaded auction items, acted as a “Price is Right” model for banquet auction items and was especially my sounding board when things would get a little crazy. I am still in awe of being added to this prestigious list. Thank you all again! Fondly, Nancy Wright NYN February-March 2020 - 17

Seeing Red and White Friedels enjoy success with homebred cows By Danielle Nauman NEW BERLIN, N.Y. - Del-FrieAcres is owned by Daniel and Marsha Friedel of New Berlin, N.Y. They milk 85 head of registered Holsteins with two of Marsha’s children, Anna (17) and Joseph (15) Thomsen. Marsha and her children joined the operation in 2012. They crop approximately 250 acres, most of which are rented, to raise feed for their herd. Their herd has a 106.7% BAA and produces an average of 21,000 pounds of milk per cow. The family provides all of the labor on the farm. Daniel does the majority of the morning chores, while Anna handles night milkings and Joseph mixes feed and helps with other farm chores. Marsha, who used to do the majority of the milking, has been sidelined due to a genetic heart disease called ARVD. In addition to their family, Daniel’s father Douglas and his brother Jim help with crops and whenever else extra help is needed. Advancing the genetics of their herd is a priority for the Friedels. They focus on breeding for type and place emphasis on long-lived cows with great udders. Within their herd, they prioritize the use of Red and White genetics. Current service sires in the herd include Luck-E Aristocrat-Red, Mr

Anna and Joseph share the work on the farm and each have their responsibilities. 22 - NYN February-March 2020

D Apple Diamondback, Riverdown Unstoppable and Morningview Radio. Bulls that have worked well for them in the past include Addiction, California, Advent, Sanchez and Hvezda. The Friedels have been working on developing several favorite cow families that fuel their passion for competing in the showring at local, state and national levels. “Although the children are getting older and before we know it, will be aging out of showing, our grandchildren have started showing now,” Marsha said, continuing to look to the future with excitement. A highlight of the 2019 show season were the accomplishments of Del-Frie-Acres AD Ruthy-Red EX-91. Ruthy capped off the year with a Red and White Junior AllAmerican nomination for Joseph, in the senior three-year-old class after being named the Reserve Grand Champion at the New York State Fair Red and White Show. Ruthy also garnered top honors in the junior division and a high honorable mention designation in the open division of the All-New York Red and White Young Cow category. Showring success is not a new phenomenon for Ruthy. As a winter calf she placed fifth in the 2016 International Red and White Show, and took top junior honors before being named Reserve Junior Champion in the Junior Show. “Ruthy is an Addiction out of a Hvezda daughter of a cow that Dan purchased from the Howard farm years ago,” Marsha said. “I chose her sire, so Ruthy is truly a family creation. We had high hopes for her, right from the start. Watching her grow into a beautiful, productive cow has been a wonderful experience.” Ruthy is establishing herself as a brood cow with a Jordy daughter due in March and a Diamondback daughter they have great hopes for. They have plans to flush Ruthy to Unstoppable this year.

As a winter calf Del-Frie-Acres AD Ruthy placed fifth in the 2016 International Red and White Show, and took top junior honors before being named Reserve Junior Champion in the Junior Show.

Another family the Friedels have had success with goes back to Ikenotch Moon-Red EX-90, an Advent from an EX-90 Jordan purchased at a local auction. She has an EX-90 Damartini AttitudeRed daughter, Ikenotch MorganRed. Del-Frie–Acres CA Merry VG-88 is an EK-STJ California-Red daughter who has been successful at local shows for Anna. The Friedels are all long-time members of both New York and national breed associations, and are all active in their local FFA and 4-H. “We are the true definition of a family farm,” Marsha said. “We all have to work hard to enjoy rewards in the end.”

All-New York and Junior All-New York Red & White Awards The second annual All-NY Red & White Contest recognized show winning Red & White Holsteins from last year’s show seasons. The competitions in both the Junior and Open divisions were strong with many individuals competing at the highest level of shows last fall. There were several champions from National level shows represented in the contest as well! Judges Jason Lloyd, Pat Lundy, and Ken McEvoy placed the contest. The winners in all four divisions, calf, yearling, young cow, and mature cow were unanimous between the three judges. The All-NY Calf, HS-Hotstuff N’ Spicy-Red was purchased as an embryo in the New York Holstein Harvest Sale. Both winners in the cow division, Underground Beccas BlairRed and Oakfield ABS Candy-Red call Oakfield

Corners Dairy home. In the Junior contest winners that excelled at the New York State Fair and beyond. Many of our Junior entries were also bred and owned, a great tribute to their young breeding programs. The award winners were recognized at the 2020 Convention in Syracuse, adding to the All-NY Breakfast that took place. Tiger-Lily Holsteins generously sponsored the contest along with the New York Holstein News. This extra recognition for Red & Whites in New York will hopefully continue long into the future. Thank you to all of the applicants and congratulations to all of the winners! See the award winners on the following pages.

New York’s Cows of the Century Contest Recognizing great cows from New York is not a hard task, as evidenced by the AllNew York Awards earned by the breeders in this issue and the last. The 2020 Cows of the Century Contest goes hand in hand with our 100th year celebrations. The Membership and Breed Promotion committee developed the contest as a way to highlight cows from the last 100 years that excelled in some way or another. High producing cows, prolific brood cows, show winners, barn favorites, there are no parameters for this contest only that the cow be either bred or owned in New York. Anyone can nominate a cow, you do not have to be the owner or the breeder of the animal. April 11th is the deadline to nominate a cow. After nominations close there will be an online voting system where voters can choose their favorite cow in the group. The top 10 winners will be announced this summer at the 2020 New York Holstein Picnic hosted by Ridgedale Farm in Sharon Springs, NY. The Cows of the Century contest is a great way to highlight the many exceptional Holsteins that have called New York home the past 100 years. To nominate a cow email, nycowsofthecentury@gmail.com or mail applications to Lynnette Wright, 138 Grove St. North Syracuse, NY 13212. Applications are on the website or one can be found in the January NYHN. The deadline to nominate a cow is April 11th.

Hello everyone! I was re-elected to the recording secretary position, which is either a really good thing or a really bad thing depending on how much you enjoyed reading my articles last year. I am super excited to be able to represent the Holstein Association for another year as Danielle Herrick well as get the chance to write to you all every month. Very little has changed since I introduced myself a year ago; my father still works as a herdsman, my mother is still a teacher, and my sister, Allison, is still at Cornell where she is finishing her senior year. While mentioning the word senior, I am currently a senior as well, though I still have not decided where I would like to go to college. As of right now I am deciding between Cornell and Ohio State to study agricultural sciences and eventually go to law school for agricultural law. My sister and I still have our own small herd of around 36 cows which get milked at the farm where my father works. I am currently a part of the JDL group for this year, which has been a wonderful experience so far. We can take a break from me for a second as I wanted to take the chance to congratulate all of the people who participated at state convention. It was great to see all of you not only showcasing your skills, but also watching you make new friends and mingle with each other. I believe that New York will be well represented at the National Convention in Pennsylvania. I would also like to thank those people who helped this convention run as smoothly as it did. Without the volunteer help from the parents and volunteers, convention would have been a mess. Also, a huge thanks goes out to Devin Kuhn and Kelly Reynolds for working hard with all the

volunteers to make the weekend so successful Show season is right around the corner, and even though it may not seem like it, the shows will be here before we know it. One of the big shows to start off the show season is the Carousel which will be taking place on April 8th-11th. I hope to see a lot of you there competing. I am really looking forward to this upcoming year, and I hope you guys are willing to keep reading my articles for another year. If you ever have any questions, just reach out to the JEC and we will be happy to help. Have a wonderful March everyone, and I will see you next month! Dear New York Holstein Association, I wish to extend my gratitude in being selected as one of this year’s NY Holstein Association scholarship recipients. I am honored that you have decided to invest in my education at SUNY Cobleskill where I am studying Agricultural Business. My plans are to complete my degree so I can continue to be an Agvocate within the dairy industry. With the backing of such strong Holstein enthusiasts I know I will be successful in my future endeavors. Sincerely, Tori Reese

Tri-County Holstein Club By Caitlyn VanDeusen Hello everyone! It seems like these past few months have been flying right by. Can you believe that we are celebrating our 100th anniversary of the New York Holstein Association? This year the Tri-County Club celebrated this important event at the New York Junior Holstein Convention. This year we had two DJM finalists; Wyatt Swatling and Caitlyn VanDeusen. Caitlyn’s DJM book was selected to go to Nationals. We also had several members do a speech at convention. In the junior prepared speaking competition Hannah King came in first place. In the intermediate division Zane Swatling came in first place as well. This year we had a novice, junior, and senior dairy bowl team. All members of the teams have to take a written exam, to see who they will play against during the actual competition. Caitlyn VanDeusen placed second and Zane Swatling came in third place for the written exam. In Dairy Jeopardy Jacob Moore came in first place in the novice division. Caitlyn VanDeusen had several cows win production awards while Adam King, Johnathon King, Lauren King, Nathaniel King, and Ryleigh Wadsworth won All-New York Awards. Several Tri-County members also ran for the Junior Executive Committee, and Adam King became the 2020 Activities Chair. Congratulations to those who competed at convention and made it so much fun!

NY Holstein at 100 and US Holstein looking at 150 soon, definitely deserves celebration and reflection. That bold B & W cow from 1900 is the ROCK-SOLID FOUNDATION for all the amazing achievements across World Ag today. Genetics, Genomics, Performance, Confirmation and Farm equipment technology all because of the juice from that old beast. Let’s keep rockin’ the Cradle of the Breed. Hail Holstein! And all the farmers who built her!
