A Message from Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles

Dear friends,

Welcome to the 61st Annual Kentucky National Dairy Show and Sale. Every year, buyers and sellers come here to show, exchange, and promote leading cattle genetics in the country.

America’s dairy industry has experienced some challenging years. From a decrease in the number of dairy farms , to supply chain issues, and inflation, dairy farmers have had to rely on their own resiliency.

Despite the challenges, the dairy industry has remained a strong agricultural product. The domestic demand for dairy has been good, with an increase in per capita consumption of all products. Gross sales of products continue to increase year to year, while export demand has also been strong for dairy categories, with skim and whey exports showing the most growth. The industry may still face some unknowns, but dairy producers are a flexible group, able to adjust to market fluctuations.

That strength and resiliency shows up in our youth, too. We are thrilled to continue to see an increase in the number of 4-H and FFA dairy show exhibitors over the years.

In support of this enduring industry, we are excited once again to be able to gather for the National Dairy Show and Sale. This event provides a unique opportunity to celebrate what is best about the dairy industry, made up of some of the hardest working people in agriculture.

Please know the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) is playing a central role in the execution of this event and we are here to help. Our Office of State Veterinarian is checking the health papers of every animal that enters the grounds and KDA’s Office of Show and Fairs, led by Chris Caudill, helps conduct the shows and sales.

We encourage you, while in the area, to visit any of the dozens of restaurants that help make Louisville a well-known destination for local cuisine and bourbon tourism. Be on the lookout for the Kentucky Proud symbol on menus and products throughout the area to know that they are sourced from Kentucky farms and agribusinesses.

We expect another successful sale this year that will continue to solidify this Kentucky event as a leading showcase of prime dairy cattle. If we can do anything to make your attendance more comfortable or successful, please ask me or my staff. Again, welcome, and best wishes.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ryan F. Quarles Commissioner of Agriculture Commonwealth of Kentucky
